[F21-SP] Route Zero: Act I <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

<<Nature's Treasure>>

[♪] | # this is totally an experimental thread.

While Floor 21 had been open for quite a fair amount of time, it was not a locale that had been fully explored by most players. Not by a long shot.

Down one of the tunnels, a long stretch that seemed to go on for eternity, was an opening to a large river station. Below everyone's feet was smooth concrete. A short distance ahead was pitch turbulence, an unrelenting rush of water that stretched from one end of the station to the other, bordered by well-cut edges of stone in most players' sights. At the far end of the river was a winding, scraggly wall, often partially obscured by fangs dipping from the ceiling; a sign of danger for what the recess contained, though to what still remained unseen. On one side, there was a small stand to offer players some perishables -- rations, food and water, some consumables with negligible buffs. The non-descript NPC looked like they'd seen better days; and they most likely would have, if they were a living person.

The scene would always be painted in monochrome, even when players showed up to its door step with Night Vision or a piece of glow stone lodged tight in their hands. Each party would always note the following three things at their arrival.

  1. They were still on the twenty-first floor.
  2. They were still within the confines of the area that held the Nature's Treasure buff.
  3. They were definitely still within a cave of some sort.

So, if it wasn't obvious enough, there was something odd about the recess. An out of place joke, some might say. Yet, the obscurity warranted a thorough investigation of sorts, so players brave and desperate and keen for adventures one and all stopped by the station for a visit.

Some never came back out the way they came from.

The atmosphere of the station was dark and gloomy. Claustrophobic even, but the river gave it life and noise in an alcove that shouldn't even exist. Sometimes there would be flickers of gold painted across the surroundings, when a hopeless light from a present source appeared, only to be quickly over taken by the darkness. Other times, the turbulent lapping of the rapids would be masked over by the apologies between the different players present, having bumped into one another.

Once, individual explorers would've set to sail down the river on their own makeshift transport. Now, it appeared that if one's information was right, or one was incredibly lucky, they might find a ferry of their own sailing down the out-of-place torrent.

And more likely than not, they would be generous enough to pick up wayward travelers hoping to explore the Zero.

| The Bumblebee

A small trawler rides the waves of the Zero with relative ease. Its pace is slow, the boat floating in the darkness, with only the faintest outlines of the cavern's stalactites keeping the vessel company on its never-ending journey. Currently, the river looks to be desolate, though it is occasional that one encounters a manned accompaniment. As of yet, none have been spotted out in the inky, withering void.

On its flybridge, a young man stands alert over the helm, the wind pressing his locks against an eye of his. Only a single hand rests upon the wheel; another is idle, with a black metal buckler set upon his arm. A limbal ring around his iris darts about the surface of the depths just as he notices a shift in the breeze -- a sixth sense on the river, if one would. He smiles, and his digits run over towards a small console to his side.

  • [             ]: They're here. It'll be a good one.

Behind him, a woman with waist-long locks and a fur-trimmed jacket leaps over the railings of the bridge, landing on the side of the deck. By her side is a black katana, adorned in black fabric to accentuate its diamonds of red, blue and gold. She gives the silver crown atop her head a flick of her fingers, making sure the accessory is in place before she rushes to the back of the boat.

From the opposite side, a man barges through an iron door and rushes to the same destination, a green metal battle-axe in hand.

Multiple fish creatures emerge from the waters where the captain can see them, the pack of which swarm the front of the ship. In their hands are a variety of barnacle-infested weapons and tools. They barely have the time to snarl their grievances before a slash of white cuts through the air around them.

Two figures trace the deck. One appears to be a smoky shadow in the ever-present dark, the only sign of her motion a faint glow from her sword. The other seems to act as her mirror, throwing themselves into the fray with a lance of pure light in hand. Where one would strike true, a sharp pierce into their target enemy, the other would swing their blade around, marking out a fading gash that was stitched together with crimson lines.

Drowned were the sounds of combat, falling mute to the depths below. The captain rests easy, knowing that his vessel was mostly safe in the clear of the waters before it, a notification appearing on the console that its anchor was to be deployed. He skirts over to the front of his platform's ledge, hopping over the rail as his partner once did, and lands with a gloved hand firmly meeting the floor. A wave of impact spreads from his feet.

More enemies board the trawler, barbs digging into the side of the ship -- firm enough to leave a mark, but the system quickly corrects the indentations, erasing the points of absolute pressure from reality. The man tussles his hair in a fashionable manner, a large blade forming by his side. He takes it by its grip as his eyes search the messy premises. A cluster of freshly burst fragments don't help the sorting of information in his head.

Nevertheless, he proceeds to scurry into action. The player -- err, NPC? pays him no mind when he scurries in their direction, catching a sahagin by the throat in a slide. His momentum carries the body overboard as he jousts the fish-man off his blade. Two heartbeats later, and the distinct sound of its submergence is all but heard by him and him alone.

Of course, the battle was far from over. His party seemed to have taken out four and more. And there were still so many left.

He cuts down another to his left with a swift swing, noticing the wisp at the back of his vision tear through another two with ease. And as the aggressive spear man between the two struck another with a powerful lunge, he chases after them, form highlighted by the accents of white on his cloak.

  • [             ]: On your right.

They don't reply. A sapphire smear in the void tell him that they'd looked, but just as quickly as their head had snapped to him did their eyes bounce away to another target, cutting his chosen fiend off without an exit. He runs the fish-man through, blade lodging in its gut, before he decks it in the face with a right hook, blasting it off to the side. It hits the ledge with a garbled burbling of squalor, before its health bar could wring its form, snuffing it out of life as its execution.

At least he had two under his belt.

He calls his blade back to his side before it slips off the side of the boat. By his feet, he sweeps away a grimy claw; a sahagin reaching out to clamber onto the deck. The loss of its digits from the deck meant it was losing its hold -- a followed stomp makes sure the creature falls. A third to his count, the man registered in his head, before glancing back to his left, checking that there weren't any more swarming this side of his space.

He only catches the slide of a green and orange coming from the hind of his ship. Another fish man bit the dust in a scatter of particles there.

A sweeping glance back over the main field behind him ticks him off that that the majority of things had been handled too easily by his new passengers. The duo seemed to be having a field day with their combined efforts; though, was it just him, or did the -- err, NPC -- seem to be having a major case of pin-point accuracy?

Perhaps it was an enhancement on their weapon? Lucky them; he hadn't even seen sight of it before. But maybe, now he had. The man left it to the clutter of his mind to brag about to his peers later on, and set his sights on his side of the ship instead.

Three more in coming, from where he could spot them. His sword flares to life with a bristling white fire as he raises it, and with a wave he batters one to a halt, a slice slung towards its face. Another shoots forth, with some delay, dropping the sahagin to be eaten by the waves. By now, he realizes, the other two would be running up to him shortly. The man steps back in preparation to dive bomb them, but a shoulder bumping into him informed him that he was out of bounds.

  • [NIGHT]: Sorry--

-- and just like that, the woman had already left his side, the fighter watching her back as she charges a fish man with a swipe, pelting off the floor with a push of her heels.

He nearly receives a stab in his side with a trident in his distraction. The NPC, somehow ever present, cuts off one of the advancing sahagin's charge with a lowered lance to their knees, knocking out their caps with a hardy push and sending it to struggle on the Bumblebee's barriers. They waste no time spiking the other with their weapon's point, at which the man finds himself reeling a fist backwards, finding himself face to face with the monstrosity. A punch breaks the organism apart.

  • [             ]: Nice work.

They flare another sweep towards the head of the one fish man they'd previously repelled, dispersing its form into shards once more. No words were further exchanged, but the entity spins the weapon in their hands and signals to him a farewell -- two fingers wave from their brow -- and in a dastardly show afterwards they backflip and scurry off towards their partner's side. A scatter of fragments from a dead sahagin by NIGHT's side acts as their welcome.

He's so used to having only three fighters on deck at most that he wonders where the rest of his combatants had gone the moment he spies no more forms clambering the side of his boat. A rush of footsteps from his left tell him that his battle-axe user has just finished with his pack, and a change in the wind's direction marks the completion of their current events.

  • [             ]: Everything okay on your end?
  • [             ]: Easily. I barely had to do any work.

The two men glance over at the duo -- now growing trio of women as they mop up the last of the fish men. The lass with a crown joins them in extinguishing the stragglers, whilst NIGHT handles the majority of the pack with a wide cut, turning two of their marks into dust. His friend turns to him, pole of his cleaver on now resting on his shoulder.

  • [             ]: You slacker!

  • [             ]: Call me that when the ship stops moving entirely...

The captain squats before taking a leap -- one jump, and he hops back up to the fly bridge, hand reaching out to the rail to guide him safely onto his two feet. His companion watches with a whistle as he shifts over to the controls, hand against the black of his monitor to beckon the Bumblebee to move again. It would take some time, but they would get through. If anything, the delay let the group down below finish their clean up before the boat started sailing proper.

As DAY takes out the last sahagin, tossing the monster overboard, NIGHT takes a moment's breather with a summon of her map. The jingle of bells calls for the attention of the other woman on board as she sheathes her katana, a tilt of her head barely made apparent in the dark.

  • [             ]: How can you see things down here...?

  • [NIGHT]: The interface lights up. It's always visible.
  • [             ]: Is that the case?

She pulls up her own menu, hoping to test the other player's theory. Sure enough, it rings true.

  • [NIGHT]: ...? Wait...

Nothing appears to show on NIGHT's page, and yet a single golden mark in the black seems to stand out to her. A finger hovers over it, and the system takes over, completing the map's identification for her. The signature stamp of approval appears on the bottom right corner of the paper, to which she rolls up the scroll uneasily.

  • [             ]: Strange, isn't it?

The axe-user struts over, grin invisible in the low light.

  • [             ]: You three are new to the Zero, aren't you? How're things on the outside -- doing good?
  • [NIGHT]: You... call it the outside, now?
  • [             ]: Well, what else would I call it? There's not really an easy definition for within the route and out of it, I imagine.

  • [             ]: They're on Floor 25 now. Think it might be a while until we see a floor advancement. Are you K9?
  • [K9]: Yeah. Then I'm guessing you're Marquis? I couldn't tell between the new arrivals. Three new women at once, and I only ever heard one name from seiche! Can you believe the man?
  • [Marquis]: I'd never picked up names either. It's nice to meet you two. Player and NPC escort, right?

DAY treks over at the group's notice of the duo.

  • [DAY]: I'm not an escort.
  • [Marquis]: Eh? Optional party member then?

NIGHT closes her menu, having sorted her inventory for the time being.

  • [NIGHT]: No. Just pretend like they're not there. Their name's DAY, by the way. DAY and NIGHT.
  • [K9]: What~ A unique NPC made just for you? Where'd you get them from? Even I haven't seen something as specific as this.

Something shifts in the shadows. Marquis finds herself on alert.

Out from the depths spring another set of enemies; worse looking than the sahagin this time. A small, round body of white with barely a face on it, each of the creatures came equipped only with a set of muscular legs and a frosty aura beneath their feet. seiche swears under his breath from on high.

He watches the trails of white bounce up from the abyss and land on his front deck with a splatter of river water. The puddles nearly turn to ice with their steps.

  • [seiche]: Someone get Weaver from the hold!
  • [K9]: On it!

The axe wielder signals a wave to the party of women before disappearing into the cabin. Marquis looks panicked, but takes action by heading to the back of the boat. NIGHT watches her run off, before pulling her blade from her inventory just as DAY summons their own shield and axe.

More combat for the party, it seems.

The player releases a breath as she charges into battle, the telling glow of a sword art shimmering down the length of her blade, almost mirroring each ningen's skin. A slash each and they shatter like glass, the indication of NIGHT's gathered loot stacking at the side of her interface in a chunky block. With a few splashes, it was obvious that more were starting to pounce from the river once again. Her enemies had no real way to fight back, she observes, and yet they still come face them aboard their own territory.

Why?

She dispatches a few more before she gets her answer. In the interim, NIGHT spies DAY cutting down a few of the strawmen with ease, practicing letting go of their weapon for the time being in favour of dismantling their opponents with their shield. seiche's tactics being taken in stride, perhaps, though the player wasn't too confident in her guess. She'd barely managed to catch the man fight during the previous skirmish.

When the trawler's cabin door opens, it is Weaver who steps out first in slow movements. His grunt is guttural, scowl seeping further with disgust as he takes a look around the black. The scatter of white was starting to become overwhelming.

He paces forward, against the rail, leaving space by the door for K9 to flee the ship's interior. K9 races to the front, as Weaver turns to look upwards. Even in the dark, he's able to make out his captain's faint silhouette.

  • [Weaver]: You call me out for this...?
  • [seiche]: Have you happened to notice the boat moving? Yes, I called you out for this. Now would you help us push them through?

His growl is faint, but seiche takes it as an affirmative nonetheless. The boat technically belonged to Weaver, after all. If it was even in any condition to need repairs, seiche wouldn't have any hold over it.

NIGHT's focus on the ever evasive scoundrels makes her question their movements with every swing she takes attempting to cut them off. Mostly, she was concerned with what these things were and why they were present at all. The sahagin she might've understood. With weapons in hand, it was likely they would maul them since they posed a threat.

These? What were they going to do, run the ship ragged with vanishing trail marks?

It was the kick to her face that snapped her out of making light of her opponents. The dull lights whirled around her vision, the woman grasping for something to latch onto in her eyes, and a hand reaching out for support as she stumbled backwards. The familiar thickness and comfort of her companion's robe was what she found, and for a moment, her movements were on pause, registering the unlikeliness of such a coincidence.

She mouthed her thanks in the dark before letting go.

In the back, it is more than obvious how much effort Marquis has to put into her strategy and playstyle to fend off the horde of Ningen alone. Even as she rounds the enemies in the center of the small space, they bump against her much too often, each shove of the walking pebble chipping of points after points of precious health. She grits her teeth as she takes a step back from the crowd, blade sliding back into her sheathe. Weaver intrudes on her space just as her weapon sparks to life with a vicious radiant gold.

Four dashes and a horizontal arc cut at each turn. Round the corners of a circle, she'd shove the masses together, some of her enemies finding themselves with lesser health; critical points stricken.

The approaching player found enough time to prepare his sword art for the fight. Lowering his form, one knee bending behind him, the system would take full control over his actions once he'd boosted off the deck.

A chain strike. One sweeping turn, a powerful kick from the airborne man depletes what was left in most of the present creatures' chambers, whilst the other Ningen found themselves still occupied by Marquis' presence. She carries them around the man in a loop, watching his full arm gauntlet flicker with a ghastly blue by its claws. Her best attempt at lashing out at her pursuers was a simple draw of her katana -- the system would've started on Iai had she not practiced her alternatives otherwise in her training before. A cloudy puff from her swift movements, and one of the Ningen suddenly finds itself stuck mid-movement, ice forming by its feet.

Pleasantly enough for the players, it wasn't shards of its own making. It struggles and flails in a desperate attempt to keep moving, but even its underwater leg day couldn't help it now.

Faintly, an ode to the Ningens' passings begins to play on the other side of the ship.

Sensing weakness from a detractor, Weaver lunges at the frozen target with a single punch, dismantling its form through. Then, in a swift motion, he grabs hold of one of the racing enemies, tearing it from its party. The kicks and squeaky warbles of distress moves none of the players, though it does lower the man's health value just a tad. He reaches out to shatter its squishable face with a vice-grip of his claw.

His health replenishes just as the creature folds onto the floor and breaks apart into data fragments.

Marquis finishes off the last of their pack, and skids to a halt once the Ningen shatters into dust. A quick scan of their side of the ship informs her that their objective had been met. She nods to Weaver with an unseen smile.

  • [Marquis]: Thanks for the help! It was starting to look messy for me.
  • [Weaver]: Don't thank me. Tell seiche to hurry up and get us somewhere already.
