[F13-SP] Rotten flesh apocalypse

Recommended Posts

The last zombie was quickly dispatched and the trio bolted for the remains of the once-elegant temple structure on the far side of the plaza.  It's appearance was similar to that of the central chapel in Angel's Point, but far less grand or intact.  More of the dead were coming, wandering aimlessly about.  The view reminded him of a lagoon full of sharks that could be sparked into frenzy at the slightest provocation.  They were far from safe, and needed to get away from here at the earliest opportunity.  Quip forced open the temple door before he could warn against it.  He and Dingo had no choice but to follow, just in case she triggered another fight inside.  Fortunately, it was nothing but an empty vestibule.

"That was foolish," he cautioned.  "There could have been another mob or ten behind these doors."  Quip just shrugged him off, but Dingo's eyes suggested that he agreed.

Quip started scrounging about the ruins, looking for anything that might meet her expectations.  Desperation might be a better description.  Freyd couldn't be sure what she and her brother had been told, but this place looked like it had long since been picked clean.

"I'm impressed that you both made it this far, but let's be clear: we're taking a quick look inside and then getting out of here.  If this place has a boss, it is very likely inside this chapel, and we are not equipped to fight it."  He took a breath before proceeding.  "I'm very sorry for your loss, but getting yourselves killed won't bring back your sister."  Dingo knew it.  Whatever grief continued to affect him seemed to be directed in equal measure between his loss and his other sibling's unwillingness or inability to cope.

"[Censored] you," Quip spat, as she dug through the rubble with her bare hands.

A pebble clanked off her helmet.  Freyd held another in his hand.  It ensured that he had their attention.

"If you want to die here, that's your business.  I'll go and you can take your chances.  But, if you want to sneak a peak inside, we can do so.  Pick a fight you can't win, and I will let you die.  Give me more guff, and you are on your own.  I don't need this."  It was harsh medicine, and she  was clearly struggling to choke down a half-dozen rebukes as tears welled in her eyes.

"He's giving us a chance, Quip.  We were lucky to get this far.  Let's take it."  He placed a gloved hand on the damaged pauldrons of his sister's armor.  "I can't lose you too."

She just looked down, unable or unwilling to make eye contact.  Freyd watched her, his face an unyielding mask.  If he wavered, she'd concoct some emotionally-driven retort.  He had to be cold and force her to use reason, otherwise, she might as well already be lost.

"Yeah.  Alright."  Her voice was barely more than a whisper.  "Let's take a look, and then get out of here."  Dingo managed a weak smile, then helped her get to her feet.

"What were you told?"  If there was any truth in it, they would need to use it to prepare.

"There is supposed to be a special painting inside this chapel: a triptych, or three panel image depicting life, death and rebirth.  Anyone who finds it can use it to restore a dead player to life."

"What about a guardian?"

"They didn't say."

"Did you ask?" Freyd pressed, not appreciating vague or unhelpful responses.

"No."  Quip's cold glare made it clear that she didn't care if Freyd didn't care.  He sighed and furrowed his brow, as if trying to clear a headache.

"Okay, did you get anything else that might be relevant, or of use?"

"The triptych was supposedly protected by four guardians, but they apparently only spawn after sunset."  Freyd quickly checked his UI clock.  They didn't have much time.

Freyd tossed the other stone in his hand, striking the worn, white marble upon which the triptych rested.  Apparently, that was enough.  Four ghostly images materialized around the central pedestal, they looked like ghostly versions of the angelic beings that might once have guarded such a place, but their visages twisted as they became solid.  Four wretched knights, dressed very much in the style of medieval templars, revealed themselves fully an instant later.

Their trap assumed that someone had foolishly touched the triptych, and so they were dumbfounded to find no one before them.  Freyd rolled his eyes towards the ceiling at the predictability, then launched a barrage of slashes and thrusts that caught them completely off guard.  The guardians stumbled back, all of them knocked to the ground by his unexpected attacks.

Behind him, Quip and Dingo just looked at each other, wondering just who Quaestor had sent to rescue them.

They recovered a bit faster than Freyd expected, especially with their bulky forms.  Two were swiftly dispatched, but a third managed to nick him with its rusted blade while he worked to fend off his last companion.  Quip - the stout warrior woman - looked like she was about to leap into the fray, but her slender brother held her shoulder, pleading her not to get herself killed.

"He's right," Freyd added.  "I'm fine and you won't be if you pull their aggro away.  You look like you're geared for tanking, but this isn't the place to try it."

The poor woman was clearly struggling against her instincts and a visible need to get her hands on the triptych as soon as possible.  The clock was ticking, Freyd realized.  Assuming this thing even did what they hoped, it looked like they were racing the clock against its eligibility.  That explained a lot.

A quick piercing thrust from Forgiven Disobedience was enough to end one of the two remaining guardians.  But the last just started cackling at him.  It was a bit unnerving, given the mob's predicament.

"You think you have won?  This prize is worthless, fools, and soon you shall joint our ranks."  Turning, it smashed the triptych to pieces with its rusted blade.  Behind him, Freyd heard Dingo's gasp and Quip's wail of shattered desperation.  Their last hope was gone, and their sister forever lost with it.  Freyd's white blade surged unexpectedly as their outpouring of emotion, glowing so brilliantly that it seemed to turn back the decay and malaise that afflicted this once-holy place.  Choir song rang out as it arced downward to obliterate the last guardian.  When the last of its shining motes fell, the ruin reasserted themselves along with the gloom.  Turning his gaze to the siblings, all Freyd saw was utter misery.

Freyd took a moment to check the altar where the triptych had been, but there was nothing left.  It might as well have been an illusion.  Maybe it was.  There was something entirely appropriate about a such a deception being placed on this floor.  The entire place reeked of despair.  Sitting down on the white travertine steps of the dais, Freyd opted to give his two companions as much time as they needed.  They could always leave without touching the triptych if the respawn timer ran out.  He'd need to recover his energy anyway, if they hoped to fight their way past the diseased horde outside.  Quip and Dingo would need their wits about them, or everyone would end up dead.

"I'm so very sorry," was all he said, mostly because it seemed proper.  Freyd couldn't actually empathize with the magnitude of their loss, and wasn't about to insult them by pretending to do so.

The two 'kids' - they were probably the same age he was - simply held each other as their tears flowed.

"We can't stay here forever."  He'd held off saying it as long as he could, but night would fall if they waited much longer.  Remaining in Valehaven after dark was tantamount to suicide.  They needed to move.  Quip was in very bad shape.  Freyd was worried that she might be in the midst of a full meltdown, which wasn't something they could afford.  "Can you get her out of here if I clear a path?"

"Yes.  I... think so."  Dingo managed to get her arm over his shoulder and get her walking, but it was going to be slow.

"Okay.  We need to make this work."  He glanced at Quip again, but her eyes weren't seeing anything at the moment.  Her focus was inward only.  The triptych began to reform on the altar, serving as a warning that their time was up.

"Remember," Freyd repeated as firmly as he could.  "Right behind me."

They burst forth from the chapel doors, catching the shambling hordes off guard, making a bee line for the alley where they had first met.  The main roads would be too open and see them swarmed and overwhelmed in short order.  The rooftops were their best bet, but Freyd doubted that Quip had the presence of mind for that kind of travel at the moment.  The alleys carried the risk that they might get cornered.  The only option left to them was to go through the buildings themselves.

A flurry of dashed and strikes caught the first batch of zombies off guard.  Freyd slashed methodically.  His strategy relied on efficiency of action, and the margins for error were very slim.  "Keep moving!" he called back, hoping that Dingo was staying right behind him.  He didn't have the luxury of watching them constantly.  That part was on them to manage.

"We're here.  Don't worry."  Dingo replied.

The diseased fell in droves before Freyd's merciless advance.  The first pack was down before Quip and Dingo had even caught up to him.  He pressed forward to ensure that the alley was clear, waving the others on while watching the surrounding mobs for signs that their escape had been noticed.  So far, so good.  Quip was starting to shake off the shock.

"Can you climb," he asked her?  She nodded, her blonde ringlets slipping down into her face.

"Yes, I think so."  Steadying herself on Dingo's shoulder, Freyd gave her a boost to climb a series of stacked crated that could get her to high ground.  Dingo made ready to go next.

"Thanks.  We'd be dead now if it wasn't for you."  Dingo's eyes spoke to the extent of his sincerity.

"You might still be, even with my help," came Freyd's reply.  He motioned upwards with his eyes, reminding the boy that time was of the essence.

Once they were safely above and out of sight, Freyd told them to head for the main gate.  Meanwhile, he skirted the edges of the buildings at ground level.  If things went wrong, he could raise enough of a ruckus at ground level to give them a chance to recover.

Long shadows stretched across the broad avenues, once pristine and full of life.  Only fragments of faux long lost civilization still dotted them now, surrounded by shuffling, undead reminders of those who lingered beyond the end of days that never were.  Freyd might have pitied them, had they ever actually lived.  It was all backstory, of course, and relatively well executed, but ultimately just a veneer for angry mobs that would not hesitate to kill them all.  Strange how that had to be the part that remained 'real.'  Freyd made good time, keeping to the shadows and pausing as necessary to avoid detection.  The others were struggling with moving along the roofs.  Their wood frames were largely rotten and creaked heavily under their weight.

A sudden snap of wood, followed by a yelp of surprise, declared that things had gone wrong.  Quip crashed through the roof of the ruined home they were traversing, landing amidst a clatter of pots and pans.  It would have to be the kitchen, wouldn't it?

Every mob in the area would have heard that, and already be converging on her position.  Damn.

"Dingo!  Get her up.  I'll hold the rest off as long as I can."

The boy was already reaching down to help up his sister, but lacked the strength to pull her up on his own.

"Find something to prop and climb, then knock it back down behind you."

Moaning, shambling sounds were approaching from all sides.  This was not going to be pretty.

"Faster would be better!"  Standing under a stone arch and fragments of wall would limit the number that could approach at once.

What I wouldn't give for a tank right now.

The first wave to crash upon him was their smell.  Freyd nearly gagged at the nauseating stench that wafted ahead of the wall of rotting corpses closing around him.  Slashing and stabbing continuously, he turned the space before him into a killing field reminiscent of watching a wood chipper-shredder, except for undead flesh.  Digits, appendages, even entire limbs were sent flying in random directions all about him as the mindless creatures foolishly advanced into the death trap.  Their sheer persistence was their gravest threat.  If he messed up once, they would overwhelm him.

To the rear, Quip had managed to find her way back to high ground.  Dingo was yelling at Freyd to get clear, warning that more were coming into the area.  Yeah, sure kid.  I'll get right on that.  No problem at all.

"Keep moving, and carefully now.  I can't pull them off you while I'm occupied with this lot."

Freyd stuck to methodically cutting down his mindless opponents.  It wasn't stylish, and the stench was positively horrid, but it worked.  Hacking each zombie apart as it approached, he couldn't help but be thankful that you didn't actually have to do laundry in this world.  Thank goodness for small miracles.

If he could take down the last straggler before him, a gap would open that could allow him to make a break for the main gate.  If they were especially lucky, and the mobs there had a slower respawn timer than those at the triptych trap, they might simply walk out the front door.  He wasn't holding his breath - though that might have helped with the smell.  A quick hoof to its left leg threw it off balance and created the opening he'd wanted, but the damned thing practically bounced off whatever debris it had landed on and was back in his way an instant later.

"Stay down, will you?!"

The zombie thing didn't care for his demand, apparently, and swung a meaty paw-like thing that passed as its fist towards him.  Freyd dodged, but the sheer force of the blow shattered one of the support columns for the arch beneath which he had been fighting.  The whole structure came crashing down on top of them, raising a massive cloud of dust that clung to both of them due to the wetness of the floor's ever-present fog.  Spitting out the bits that had flown into his mouth, Freyd regained his footing and stance, re-analyzing his escape route and timing.  It didn't look good, nor could he spare a glance to ensure that Quip and Dingo were doing alright.

Wiping his face against an equally encrusted shirt sleeve, he imagined himself looking a bit like one of the Ghostbusters right after the marshmallow monster had blown up.  How the hell do I get myself into these messes?

"What did you do, Ray?"  His scolding seemed to have little impact on the zombie, which clearly didn't appreciate movie classics.  Philistine!

His aim held true as the launched a ball of moistened dust directly into the thing's face, caking its eyes and causing it to blubber and moan as it clawed out its own eyes.  Freyd just rolled his as he cut the monster down.  An extra thrust made sure that it was dead and dissipating into motes before he took off down the main thoroughfare, trying to catch up with his wards.  He found them a block down the road, back on the ground.

"Why aren't you staying to the roofs, like we agreed?" His voice was tense, but tempered by the possibility of a practical explanation.

"You mean those roofs?"  Dingo pointed behind him to where several buildings had completely collapsed, leaving a thirty foot gap to the outer wall and no means to scale them.

"Yeah, I suppose I did."  More Walking Dead wannabes were heading in their direction.  Now wasn't exactly the best time to pause and regroup.  "Make a break for the main gate.  Quip, keep them from clustering.  Dingo, your job is to watch and distract as required.  I'll mow down anything that stands in our way.  Go, now!"

They rushed forward, giving up all pretense of stealth and clever navigation.  This was a straight-out breakout, and they needed to hurry.  Their tactics allowed them to bypass the few stragglers wandering aimlessly between them and their goal, but Freyd knew that it only meant having them join the growing throng at their backs.  The diseased of Valehaven were onto them and more were heading towards them from all sides.

Quip flattened on with her shield, while her brother sliced the hamstrings of another that happened to be facing away from them.

"Keep moving" Freyd yelled back, worried that they were taking too much time.

"You could have picked a less direct route," Quip growled back at him.

"Oh good!  So nice to have you back with us."  Freyd taunted her, but was glad to see fire back in her eyes.  It might make all the difference right now.  He lopped the head off a stray walker as they pressed on, having nearly reached the portcullis.  That was when Dingo collapsed.  Freyd instantly spotted the injury on his leg.  Damn.

"Quip - new job.  Get him up and out of here.  I'll make a fighting withdrawal to buy you as much time as possible."  She looked confused at first, then saw her brother and realized what was happening.  Not even bothering to acknowledge his instruction, she slung her shield on her back and hauled the much slighter boy over her shoulders, the two of them focusing on making it to the gate.  Freyd counted the number of mobs closing in.

Not good.

"How the hell do I always manage to miss one of you?!  Honestly, it isn't even statistically possible at this point!"  Freyd wanted to shake his fist at the random number generator in the sky, but couldn't spare the time or effort at the moment.  There were too many, and he needed to buy as much time as possible.  More importantly, he expected another group to be lurking on the far side of the barricade, but he couldn't be in both places at once.

"Hug the left side of the barricade," he called out, "like you did when you entered."  He slashed at a couple more approaching zombies.  "There were...err.. a lot of them in front of the barricade last time.  If we're really lucky, we can avoid them."

Firstly, their luck hadn't been great so far.  Secondly, he knew full well that there were twenty of the rotting bastards there, which would be the end of them.  At least none had spawned on this side of the barricade this time.
