[SP-F22-EVENT] <<Night About the Galactic Lake>> - Don't Be Koi

Recommended Posts

"Star-sucking fish fiends?  Seriously?"

"Don't underestimate them!  That's how they manage to sneak into yer dreams and take control!"  Twice-Baked Jake was the local lunatic, celebrated for his entertainment value and likewise ignored for everything else.  He was particularly popular during the Tanabata event for his outrageous fish tales and conspiracy theories about subliminal guppy machinations.  This year it was going to be koi, apparently.  Freyd was about to dismiss him when he recalled the remarkably prolific presence of koi during his arrival at the Tanabata festival earlier, including some unusually excessive rebellious behaviour from Persi.

"Out there!  Under the waves... they gather their strength and scheme to feed upon us as we would feed upon them and their kin.  BEWARE!!   Bwahahahah!"  Jake ran off screaming.

Freyd turned and stared at the perfectly still lake, lit by a modest armada of floating paper lanterns, wondering what might actually be lurking beneath the surface, when dozens of little orange fins started cresting the surface.  Dream feasting feeding frenzy...

A swarming throng of angry orange fins and flippers frothed along the shore, feigning fragility to lure in their victims, but Freyd knew better.  He saw through their insidious schemes to enslave and feed upon the hopes and dreams of the many players gathered for the festival.  Their prize would be denied, and there would be sushi aplenty as penance for their presumptions.

Wading into the shallow water along the shore, he tore into their seemingly endless numbers.  Most were too shocked by his apparent resistance to their soothing songs and gentle swaying motions to put up any initial resistance.  Some recovered more quickly and transformed to reveal their true, malevolent natures.  Some demonic influence had warped and twisted them into vile monstrosities eager to prey upon those who lowered their guard amidst the pastoral setting of the unusual floor, and their numbers were legion.  They had to be stopped.

Flayed bits of fish flew all over the beach and shallows, staining the water a strange and sickly purple.  As they fell, each fish burst into a field of gold stars, as if they had consumed the aspirations of the heavens and somehow sought to deny the fateful reunion of the festival by suckling the stars as they were reflected upon the still surface of the galactic lake.

'Huh.  So that's why they call it that,' Freyd thought to himself as he methodically mulched the surrounding koi, his sword art forming a whirlpool around him and drawing more of the vile creatures into reach.

"That's not exactly nice of you, is it freaky fish?"  Seriously, who designs monsters that literally such love and joy from the world?  He already knew the answer.  It had to be Cardinal.  The demented system AI had some perverse obsession with testing the psychological limits of Aincrad's player population.

More of the dream-sucking fiends frenzied as movement increased in the water and at the festival grounds.

"They gorge themselves faster as more people arrive," Freyd said aloud, realizing that swift victory was of the essence, and that his position could quickly become untenable.  Another wave were drawn into his growing maelstrom of aquatic doom, but he couldn't possibly keep this up long enough to slay them all.  Spotting more golden starbursts near the boats scattered throughout the lake, he surmised that the key might lay in the rail project he'd read about earlier.  Connect the mythical gods and the fish fail.  A bunch of kids were building it near the docks, where he'd been unceremoniously dumped into a pond thanks to Persi's mischief.    The rest of the players here were much better suited to completing the required crafts.  All he had to do was thin the koi's numbers long enough to keep them from interfering.  Returning the gold stars they had already stolen would also help.

He'd already drawn in most of the mutant koi in this part of the lake, but how many more might be lurking elsewhere?  Better to try and focus on their denser pockets for maximum effect.  "That means that I need to keep moving."

Increasing the speed of his rotation, the whirlpool rose into the air in a funnel.  The wet sandy bottom of the lake was exposed around him and ripples were spreading outward, disturbing the still waters.  He needed to end this quickly, lest the rest of the festival be disrupted by the very efforts intended to save it.  Once most of the mindkiller koi had been sucked up, Freyd leapt into the air and drove his heavenly sword into the ground, drawing the funnel down around him and smashing it into the ground, slaying most of the monsters in the process.  Only a few, stunned survivors lingered to mop up.

The few remaining mutant koi were quickly wiped out.

'Disgusting things,' Freyd thought to himself.  "We can't ever just have a simple outing, can we Persi?"  His shadowy familiar was having the time of her life, leaping from koi to koi, eviscerating them as she went.  As a being of pure shadow, Persi didn't share the qualms of the feline family about getting wet.  It reminded Freyd of just how unusual and special a creature she really was.

"Looks like this area is clear.  Let's get a boat and head over to the shallows on the far side of the docks.  Proximity may help these things feed.  It's a guess, but we might as well start there and keep putting a crimp in their plans."  Persi slithered, looking a more akin to an eel as she moved through the water.  Freyd did his best to follow and eventually had to move back to the beach to try and keep pace.

As Freyd approached the dock there seems to be a non-descript man seated by a rock, wearing a straw hat and clad in light clothes. “Fine night to be out on the water,” he comments, rising as players approach him. With a hand, he would gesture to one of the few available row boats, oars tucked to each vehicle’s side. “Feel free to take one. Just be sure to return them to me after you’re done. Oh, and watch out for the lanterns. Wouldn’t want to put all of them out now, would we?”

Freyd looked at the NPC incredulously.  Was he really so blind to the threat lurking literally just below the surface?!  Other festival patrons gave him a wide berth after his earlier escapades chasing Persi through the streets and the raucous mess they'd made in the process.  Several merchants were still giving him the stink eye as he ran past.  'Yeah, sure... fine... fine..."  Freyd waved the boat tender aside and clambered into one of the small vessels, grabbing a handful of oars as he went.

Rowing out to the next school of fiendish fish took longer than Freyd had wanted, but he kept getting yelled at for his wake as he paddled madly.  Glares from a few orange-tagged players was enough to get him to slow his pace.  Persi circled around him in the water, picking off any koi foolish enough to stray too close.  The water was getting a bit deeper here, which would make fighting more difficult.  The floating lanterns, and symbols hopes and dreams draped all over the bamboo trees around the festival grounds made it clear to him that he'd have to persevere.

Memories came flooding in of times spent with friends throughout Aincrad in the few short weeks since he had begun his mad adventures in this equally crazy world.  They calmed him, as he recalled quests with Yuki, Night, Elora, Kiluia, Haine, Raidou, Eruda, and so many others.  He could do this for them.  He had to.

Sword in hand, Freyd surveyed the mass of writing orange fish flesh flopping angrily in the water.  Persi corralled them, concentrating their numbers for maximum effect.  One high, twisting leap later, Forgiven Disobedience was slashing through the water, twisting like a corkscrew.

'Perhaps a blender might make a better comparison?' he thought.  The koi thrashed wildly.  How dare anyone interfere with their feast?!  They had waited so long for another chance to devour these sensations.  The heavy resistance of the water complicated his strikes.  It was simply too deep here for him to create the same type of maelstrom that had worked at their previous location.  Try as they might, the vile creatures could not penetrate his defenses and most of them had been caught off-guard by the sudden attack.  They were lazy, cowardly creatures, at heart, and their indirect manner of attack highlighted their fear of direct confrontation.  Too bad for them.

Determination fueled his frenzied onslaught, slaying countless dream-suckers before they could dash the festive celebrations nearby.  Those near enough to see the splashing must have thought him mad, or drowning, or both.  It seemed to be his lot to play the role of the fool.  That suited him fine, so long as he accomplished something in the process.  These insidious beasts needed to be purged from these waters and preferably from this floor altogether.  Persi cut off their escape, seeming to be everywhere at once.  Her long, shadowy presence like a dark barrier all around the floundering school.  A few tried to leap over her, only to be cut down by the white blade of death unimpeded by watery drag.

"Keep it up!  I think we nearly have this bunch.  We've got this!"  Freyd reflected on how the mere thought of combat proficiency seemed a dream of his own, not so long ago.  Things were definitely changing.

This school was finished, but there were plenty more spread throughout the lake.  Climbing back into his borrowed boat, Freyd made his way farther from the crowd before he drew too much ire for his inexplicable actions.  The other players wouldn't understand, and he didn't have time to convince them.

Let them savor the moment.  That's the whole point of this.

Some, like himself, were meant to vigilant at the edges of the collective awareness.  It was one of the first times that Freyd felt proud to consider himself an outcaste.  A fringe warrior. Wasn't that the truth!

Persi had already found another group of feasting koi and was bus clustering them for impending doom.  "So be it," Freyd said to himself, accepting his role.  Let the others play and parlour.  He was more comfortable out here anyway.  Fringe Knight?  It had a slightly better and more official ring to it, but sounded too formal.  He'd think of something suitable eventually.

The carnage resumed mere moments later, amidst fierce and furious fin flapping and dumbfounded fish suddenly facing futures as fillets.  Freyd's methodical attacks might have been repetitive, but they were largely effective.  Cardinal's rules could be worked to your favour, if you followed the right formula.  He'd figured his out a while back and was feeling pretty fulfilled about forcefully felling his foes through its functions.  There always seemed to be a few who snuck past and had to be compelled back into the fold.  Persi was a dutiful sentinel and made sure that they didn't get far.

"I really hope this is having some effect.  if nothing else, it's collecting a bunch of gold tickets that we can feed back to those kids and help them get their rail-thingy done."  Freyd was getting soaked through to the bone, and starting to wonder if there was some secrete parameter in the event code that had been tweaked to ensure that he stayed wet for its entire duration.

One particularly fat koi with white blotches around both of his eyes was giving Freyd a hard time.  The rest fell to his blade in quick succession, but this one had evaded all of his original efforts.

"Persi, I think 'Blotchy' here has future fish-boss aspirations.  What say we teach him a valuable lesson?"  A pair of playful blue eyes darted past him in the water as the rest of the school fell prey to their trap.  Blotchy had somehow kept his wits about him during the massacre and was trying to make a break for deeper.  No joy.  A pair of slotted blue eyes intercepted him just as he thought he was clear, and clipped his tail, sending him into an upward spin with enough force to propel him out of the water.  He fell back into the water with an undignified slap, bobbing around dazed for a few moments, while Freyd and Persi closed in for the kill.

Blotchy had other plans.  The unusually large and wily koi flipped back out of the water, catching Freyd off guard and out of position, managing to nip him in the shoulder as he came back down.  This one had a sinister mien about him that Freyd instantly recognized and knew that they could not allow to escape.  There was something in its beady little blue eyes - a glimmer of recognition of the opportunity before it and its kin.  Freyd was fighting the tide when it came to culling their numbers, and all it needed to do was waste his time for as long as possible.

"No dice, big guy.  I'm going through you, and then all of the others if I have to.  You're all going down tonight."   He and Persi circled around the much smaller orange fish like a pair of hungry sharks waiting for their opportunity, tiring out their prey until they were ready to strike.

Their opportunity came moments later.  A quick feint by Persi compelled Blotchy to attempt his escape, only to fall prey to Freyd's waiting blade.

"Wolf pack tactics, Persi?  Not our usual style, but it seems to have worked."  He collected the gold stars still floating in the water around them and did a quick mental tally of their collection to date.  They hadn't even broken three hundred yet, and the kids needed over two thousand.  Wading back to the boat, Freyd flopped inside, laying under the stars while he caught his breath.

Part of him just wanted to sleep.  He'd been at this for ages, and it was just the beginning.  Hopefully, the other players were making some headway too.  Laying below the gunnels, the glow from the surrounding lanterns framed the starry sky beautifully.  He wanted to linger and just watch it, but he felt the Koi's droning influence tugging at his mind, attempting to lull him into slumber.  Jumping up, he slapped himself in the face to shake it off.  There was no time to waste.

"Where to go next?  We have to keep moving, Persi.  Whatever happens, don't let me fall asleep."    He truly hoped she understood.

Another group of koi were gathered in a small inlet nearby, partially concealed near the mouth of a small creek.  A rocky spit overgrown with trees and grass made it difficult to spot them at first.  Fighting in shallower water was appealing, and his arms already felt like they were made of lead.  Rowing slowly, his vision blurred as he stared at the armada of floating lights before him.  Persi hopped into the boat, splashing water across his face in the process.  Freyd's eyes went wide and came back into focus.  They needed to wrap this up soon.  If the effects of the koi's influence was already this strong, they could already be in dire straights.

Their boat picked up speed and coasted up to the beach next to the overgrown spit.

Peering through the foliage, they could see that the inlet worked like a small lagoon at the mouth of the creek.  The creed itself spilled over a small waterfall, blocking any avenue for escape in that direction.  All that he and Persi needed to do was cut off the narrow gap to the lake and this batch would be trapped.  Persi could hold the gap while he waded into the rest.  A few quick looks and gestures communicated his intentions, but Persi already seemed to have worked out the same plan ahead of her master.  She vanished into the undergrowth, heading towards the end of the spit.  Freyd steadied himself on a large slab of granite protruding above the rest of the greenery, taking a moment to recover his energy.

"One more push,"  he told himself, trying to convince his muscles to obey.  They protested vigorously by refusing to move.  Will, alone, would have to carry him through this one.

Their plan worked perfectly.  Persi spread herself across the mouth of the lagoon like an ominous inky maw, her brilliant blue eyes terrifying the overly confident koi who had believed themselves safe in their little watery hideout.  Freyd waded in to them from the side, sword slashing viciously as he advanced relentlessly through their ranks.  The entire school was caught off guard and stunned by the swiftness of their assault.

"Give it up, and restore the stars that you've stolen!"  He was definitely delusional now, if he hadn't been before, but his bizarre fringer knight fantasy seemed to be giving him strength to press on.  That was enough.   Curb-stomping one fish into the rocks, he swiveled and speared another with his white sword, its blade gleaming in the moonlight also reflected on the water's surface now a purplish mass of carved fish flesh.  The sword holy light flared and added its blaze to the moonlight, spelling doom for these malevolent things.

The devastation concluded with a rising tide of holy light and fury as Forgiven Disobedience flared with ever greater intensity.  The choir of the heavens sang about them as white light destroyed the defilers of hopes and dreams in righteous retribution for their presumptions.  When it was over, Freyd collapsed to his knees in the shallow waters, his blade splashing into the water where he had just enough presence of mind left to dismiss it back to safe keeping.

His chest was heaving from the exertion and weariness, but his spirit was lifted by the prospect of what he and Persi had accomplished.  It was enough to help start to lift the pall under which he had struggled throughout this evening.  Watching the stars reflected in the steadying surface of the pool, he placed a gloved hand beneath one of them and watched as dozens more from the slain koi gathered in his grasp.

"Come on, Persi.  We have to go restore some lost hope."

Persi was sniffing at the small waterfall where the creek ran into the lagoon.  Freyd had long ago come to appreciate how she had quite the nose for treasure.  Searching the rock face below the running current, he found a small niche carved into the rock face.  Several stones fell loose as he tugged and cleared a larger opening, revealing a small chest concealed within.

"How do you always know!?"  He practically begged to know, marveling at her impressive talent.  She beamed her big blue eyes back at him, knowing how grateful he always was when she found one of these things.  The chest itself was a small wooden box - something akin that what a fisherman might have used for lure and tackle.  Faded paint on the exterior still showed traces of blue and green seahorses dancing across its surface.  The brass fittings were mostly rusted through, including a seized latch that had not likely been opened in many years.
