A small rectangular room is lined with display cases around its perimeter. Behind the glass, finely crafted blades of various kinds rest on plush velveteen cushions, their smooth surfaces barely catching the warm glow of a lantern on the far side of the room. It's dark besides the fire, and a pair of purple eyes strain themselves to better examine their forms in the light. They glance between the display and the bright menu besides.

After a moment, the woman overlooking the swords removes a hand from her chin, and summons her blade to compare. The weaving of white around her fingers has little effect on the dimness of the room. When she touches her hilt, she pulls the thick of her weapon over and onto the top of the display case to rest it. A few hand motions later, and she pulls out its examination window.

She shouldn't even have checked.

As the team is talking by the counter, NIGHT steps away from the display cases and strides over to DAY. They're standing idle at a distance, wholly unmoved by the different players' efforts to try and make a bargain out of their deal, or come to an understanding with regards to the transaction. She mutters something unintelligible to the entity, to which the Gemini replies to in a similarly hushed voice, and when the two are certain no one else in the room is watching...

They both disappear.

The opening of the door is what catches Weaver's attention, and the indentations of footsteps on the mud is a dead give away to their proceedings. It is with silent steps that he follows them out of the shack and into the heart of the isle.

He comes to a stop when he hears several 'tink's in the distance. Weaver slides his back against a rock's surface and peers around it for comfort.

| A FOREST CLEARING

Skeletal miners. The kind that he'd usually have fought on the surface, ones with dirtied yellow helmets with their lights completely bashed out. They had gathered in a circular clearing with a large boulder at the center; amongst the alpine trees, the few ore-beholden rocks scattered by the underbrush were measly in their stakes for any gathering player worth their salt to spend time on.

So then... these were the materials their blacksmith was looking to find?

Weaver didn't hear the half of it -- that means NIGHT and DAY hadn't either. And just as he was tracing his memories, watching the corpses forge on with their work, they'd shuddered forth, halting their movements entirely.

The player held his breath. Did they see him?

Not at all. A pixelated rip of reality tore across the space behind the miners and a shadowed blur of darkness poured through it, a gentle shard of black and white in their hands.

A crackle of sparks and an insidious black wave, followed by a blinding white, especially in the Zero's dark. When he'd cracked open his eyes once again, he'd caught his last sight of the shadow amidst the crystalline dust.

Track shoes, reminiscent of their ship's own traveler's, its pink striking against its black. What pulled his attention away from realizing the player behind the aggression, however, was the definition of their blade. Sleek, thick, with an incriminating orange streak across its edge.

None of his known fellows had such a weapon.

With the miners at the clearing's entry completely wiped out, Weaver had half a mind to watch the show from a distance. There were a large handful of colliers more by the sides of the boulder, barely visible from his position behind the vegetation that stood between him and them. On the other hand, approaching now might scare whatever figure was behind this massacre away.

So he chose to keep to himself, darting into the bushes like a wildcat and stalking the apparition from a distance.

Rinse and repeat -- the jitters rippling in mid air, the flash of light, then dipping to black. Another sparkle and startle of white hit his eyes, fervent, as though trying to blind all foes around them (did they know the colliers didn't have eyes?) before the scene dimmed down again, luminescence fading away into the dark.

He had reason to believe it was his tailed party, after a couple of beats. Weaver should've guessed earlier that it was his fleeing targets, though the duo's(... combined...?) attacks hadn't looked the same as when he'd fought with them on the ship nor in the light house.

Then... was it an effect of the environment? The shopkeeper did mention how the location was specifically unique at some point. And that sword she carried didn't look like it seemed to pack a punch.

 

Like, it was super gaudy, see...

It seemed as though their quarry was never ending. Waves upon waves of undead miners digging themselves out from the dirt below in respawn (or was it in a queued order that they revealed themselves? Only Cardinal knows). While some of them had dispersed into the ether just as quickly as the glitching player did (okay, that had to be illegal, right? But the game hadn't banned them just yet, so--), others still found corporeal form the moment their health bar depleted and their skulls hit the rubble around them.

Weaver hesitated before stalking his way closer to the nearest corpse, examining the dead body over for any signs of system defiance.

It hadn't been the attacks or the gashes -- the light trickled away from these markings just fine, although they'd been coated with a dark residue that he wasn't keen on interacting with. The bones on the being he inspected reflected back a dull blue, light courtesy of his claw.

His inspection yields nothing amiss with their general appearance. A slit here, a concussion there; chips in the structures of each creature lent their form much needed detail, though how Cardinal interpreted each and every pixel had always perplexed Weaver in his subconscious. Nevertheless, the player continues his examination, and it is only when he flips the body on its front that it starts to show signs of shattering into pieces.

It leaves only the traces of glowing ash behind. A faint circular outline on the ground beneath it, however, told Weaver a different story about its sudden disappearance. In between two sharp claws, he picks up the trinket; a round coin with its sides beveled with an odd symbol etched upon it on both sides.

Currency, but for whom?

He wishes to examine it, and in seconds the menu pulls up in his vision. But the dancing lights in the distance makes him shuffle backwards towards the underbrush first.

Weaver preferred not to be seen in that moment, if he could help it.

seiche feels the corner of his lip twitch. His arms retreat from the counter top, tucked nicely by his torso in a fold. The man's minute figure is only brightened by the aggressive burning of the fire in a steel lantern, kept at the corner of the shopkeeper's workspace.

  • [seiche]: So basically you just want us to play janitor for you. Even though you chose this isle to live on.

Ivory rolls her eyes and leans in towards the counter.

  • [Ivory Spring]: Hey, it's not every night that these skeletons knock at my door. They're just wanting some clean up once in a while, that's all. We mostly live here fine for the most part, okay?
  • [seiche]: C'mon. Are the obols seriously that worth it...?
  • [Ivory Spring]: Hey, to each his own. I think they are. You wouldn't believe what questionable things the gods come up with. It's my bit of entertainment when all that's left for players to do is sit tight and wait, y'know?

A scurry of footsteps from the back of the store, and out of the darkness appears K9. He wears a concerned expression, though his arms are completely bare.

  • [K9]: Hey, uh, seiche?
  • [seiche]: You finished picking out a temporary axe yet?
  • [K9]: Yeah-- about that. Everyone else in the store is gone.

seiche startles at the news. Meanwhile, K9 turns around towards the closest display, sweeping aside his friend's astonishment.

  • [K9]: I can pick any axe?
  • [Ivory Spring]: As long as you loan me the col for safekeeping. Just in case you, I don't know, haul it away somewhere or break it once again. The works.
  • [K9]: Okay. seiche, how much have you got...?

The player in darker garb replies not to his query, looking over the room in disbelief. His eyes land on the door to the shop being left wide open, before he grumbles and sighs, a hand meeting his face in great annoyance.

  • [seiche]: Just... pick something. I'll be right back...

| A FOREST CLEARING

[ITEM NAME]: Obol
[ITEM DESCRIPTION]: Currency of the underworld. Notably, one can trade this in with Charon for a trip across the River Styx.

What was this doing on the Zero? The player recognized the two other keywords in the description, putting the item's proper use aside for the moment -- together, it seems as though this coin should've been kept on the seventeenth floor. To find it on their own river, on the twenty first, however, was an oddity, but stranger things have occurred on route. Weaver had learned not to question these things anymore, but a part of him still felt the need to satiate his curiosity.

The man tucks it away, eyeing the site of action. Whilst he had taken his time looking over his find, signs of their impact had apparently shifted towards the back of the clearing, leaving the player free to explore the front portion of it without being found out.

In three strides he shuffles out the brush, giving the view before him a scan. When he's certain no figures were about to creep out the ground once more, he continues to follow the trail around the boulder, circling it in an anti-clockwise direction.

Weaver stops at the next quadrant. He crouches down close to the ground, noticing another miner left steady on the floor. While he takes a moment to wonder if he should withdraw the obol left in the corpse's mouth when he spots it, the man chooses to leave it in, concerning himself better with the ores it had chosen to harvest up until the moment it was interrupted and killed.

A simple look over the mound tells him nothing is amiss, save for the lack of efficiency that the colliers took to reap their findings, a variety of careless indentations around the metal a sign of their poor performance.

Whilst his weapon was not designed in a pick's fashion, Weaver still figures his wanton gathering could net the material much faster than his fallen foes' own pace. His metallic blue palm falls over the fragment left caked in hardened dirt. With a willful exertion and a flicker of blue, he feels the teeth of his claw dig into the side of the shard. A pop, and a chunk of ore comes loose with a quick yank.

The telling circular timer by the corner of the gathering node reassures him nothing is out of the ordinary. Likewise, the reveal of the rock in his hands informs him naught of the uniqueness of his spoils. Weaver feels his brows furrow, mind wandering in genuine perplexity. On the island for materials -- special ones, of what kind? He flings the ore over his shoulder and takes another guess. It is from a place of anger that he snags the coin from his long forgotten associate's jaw, and sends it off to the afterlife with a burst of sparkles.

The sounds of struggle die out in the distance, and for once they notice the dull thud of an object landing in the mud.

NIGHT carefully rounds the boulder, stepping away from the cloud of dust that had arisen in her calamity's wake. There is a moment of fear in her footsteps -- her energy pool's just about out, and if there was another enemy, then she'd begrudgingly have to leave it to her counterpart.

She eyes the corner of her sights, a faint grey daub in the mix of dull and blue hues nigh noticeable to NIGHT simply because she'd watch her doppel leap into the canopies from earlier. They seem to be distracted by the other presence in the clearing, and by their idle observation, the player proceeds with her investigation.

Footsteps. In her direction. Even as she kept her own paces quiet, she couldn't help but run into them after a short moment.

NIGHT raises a brow. The sword starts to fade from her hand in the same moment he glances in its direction. She contemplates briefly if she should admit the truth -- but what was she to expect as a response to 'I'm taking my system entity out for a walk because they'd seemed bored'?

  • [NIGHT]: I don't need to tell you that.
  • [Weaver]: Really?

Weaver scoffs, folding his arms defensively.

  • [Weaver]: So if I were here to tell you that the boat was about to leave, you'd rather follow your own objective?

A moment of silence, before NIGHT spoke up again.

  • [NIGHT]: Is the boat about to leave?
  • [Weaver]: No, idiot, the damn boat's not going anywhere on my account and seiche's generosity. Why'd you two sneak out the front?

  • [Weaver]: And leave you two stranded alone on the Zero if we'd left?
  • [NIGHT]: Are you offering yourself to be our tour guide or something? We're not kids -- we can figure our way out of here if we have to.

The moment NIGHT spots her energy bar refill in the corner of her vision, she rolls her eyes just as Weaver is about to interject another opinion. Her form crackles into obscurity, footsteps trailing towards the underbrush bordering the side of the clearing, reality seeming to ripple from the corner of Weaver's vision, directly up above.

He follows the tracks, reluctant. But when he raises his gaze to the skies, he finds nothing in the treetops.

Offbeat paths were only his thing whenever he became familiar with the area he was walking into. Weaver soon returns from the wilderness, following the winding snake of earth that parted from its circled clearing. Onwards seemed like his option to follow the woman, he figures. If he couldn't keep track of their footsteps, at least he could walk where guidance was offered to him, by Cardinal or by players past.

This time, the sounds of chiming bells is what draws his attention to the field ahead. He kicks up gravel underneath his boots, a sign of an environmental shift, and jogs as quietly as he could up ahead. A large stretch of emptiness lays before him, mining equipment scattered about. What remnants of an operation here were only validated by creeping undead working themselves past their bones, worn timed nodes that seemed to be exhausted of their materials, and--

The flash of light and the coughs of walking corpses tell him the interloper was present, too.

It was with hesitance that Marquis trudged down the steps leading towards the Bumblebee. seiche gestured over to the lone building in the distance, though he was ever doubtful in the first place that the smithy even needed pointing out. Between the eclipse of the cave and the dusty hues of the isle's coast, Psychopomp stood out like a sore thumb, if one knew where to craft out its outline in the shadows. The woman shot him a raised brow, pained at his fumbling, before speaking up about the most obvious factor about their visit.

  • [Marquis]: Has K9 fixed his blade yet...?
  • [seiche]: About that. We seem to be missing half the party somehow. I need you to watch over the store -- and the boat -- for me.
  • [Marquis]: Very funny. Why's K9 not on guard duty instead?

Marquis huffs, a trace of a smile growing on her face.

  • [Marquis]: Yeah... about that. I wouldn't push my luck.

Off the boardwalk of the dock, the duo make their way over the shoreline towards their destination. With a push of his arm, seiche throws open the smithy's door, to be greeted by one disappointed K9 wielding a standard battle axe and an idle Ivory Spring, who couldn't seem to care less about her patron's discontentment.

  • [seiche]: K9, we're leaving.
  • [K9]: I don't have enough col for this purchase...
  • [seiche]: Right, right. Money. Here.

The duo enter the store, seiche moving on ahead to drop a couch of col onto the counter. Marquis takes her parting towards the left, noticing the glint of the shop's display glass catch ambient light from the dirty windows.

seiche grabs hold of his companion's arm, pulling him away from the shop keep already counting her coins.

  • [seiche]: C'mon, they couldn't have gone far. If we hurry up, we should be able to catch up with them.
  • [K9]: Okaayy...
