[PP | FL 1] The First Lessons are Free... really?

Recommended Posts

The debut of a future tank was coming to light! Floor 1. Another beautiful day with fair weather. Temperature was amazing and it was time to go.  He was preparing himself for this quest that everyone recommended completing before adventuring into the deep dark recesses of the other floors. Ueno stood there in the light and stared at the alchemist’s residence. Black hair drifted from side to side as the wind blew its gentle breeze. Now then, show time to experience the life of a tank. He wasn’t up to par yet. He chose his weapon the way he did due to the fact he was going to start off small by smashing in some monsters and power level himself. It was the only way.

Footsteps crept up on the housing and his eyes locked onto the wooden door frame. He leaned in and knocked gently awaiting for the man to answer. This was quite exhilarating to him. He had been developing proper ways to get levels before doing any quest and sunk most of his skills in his first fighting ability. Here goes nothin.”

Vera stood at odd ends with this world. On one hand, she was content living her life in solitude, kicking back in this shit world that didn't seem to get better. It was a beautiful escape if she could block out the factor of death and live in blissful ignorance. Aincrad had shown her places she never thought to traverse, it was like she could finally live her life away from the constraints of reality, away from everyone she was tied down to or affiliated with. She could escape and reinvent life, she didn't mind if things stayed this way.

And on the other hand, she was poor as fuck.

Vera settled onto a crate under a store awning and scrolled through her HUD. Her stomach squeezed uncomfortably, she was growing hungry without much COL to feed herself. The woman had a knack for blowing her budget on useless shit, thus the situation and her current desperation. She sighed and facepalmed. "Really? H o w ?" How did she go broke so fast? Vera had no choice but to pick up her slack and do some errands for pocket change. She hated work, hated moving and being out in the bright ass sun, but she would get that ramen bowl if that was the last thing she did!

Vera pushed her lanky frame off the crate and set forth for the quest marker in town.

She arrived at what seemed like an alchemist's abode. The sooner she'd get this over with, the easier it would be on her. There was another figure waited. She propped her hip against the stone building and folded her arms, looking away. A moment later, she couldn't help but glance at the tall raven haired man. He turned around and their eyes met for a split second before she blanched, her golden eyes shooting up to his cursor. Yukio. She peered at him without a word, sizing him up to see if she was hallucinating because of her hunger or something.

Was it really that lil' shit in the flesh?

"You."

She pointed a finger at him, incredulous.

You? Did someone just refer to him as you? The door hadn’t opened yet but he heard rustling. His head turned slowly and there she was. She was a cute thing. Very cute. Except she had a personality like a squash. He lowered his glasses a bit and then pushed them back up his face. The fact that the game developers got your dimensions correctly is nothing short of a miracle, you midget.” He shook his head and waited staring at the door. He wasn’t going to interact more than he had to with her. Blackened orbs just kept staring at the door awaiting for it to swing open.

The door did open and he gave her the finger walking into the home. Shit. He thought. He knew that she was here for a reason and that reason was for their initial quest. Please don’t do this to me fate…He thought in his head as he felt her drill her eyes into the back of his head. He did not enjoy this at all. To spend his time in a death game.. with her was hell on earth.

The audacity of this man, it was him in the flesh alright.

Her eye twitched as she surveyed his appearance. He made it on a gaming magazine once and thought he was some big shot, it drove her up a wall to see the face behind that voice. She scoffed at the insult and stepped forward. Golden eyes bored holes at him as she balled her fists, her tiny, raging frame almost comical in comparison to the tall figure towering over her. "Listen here four eyes-" She didn't get the chance to finish when the old man opened the door. She whipped her head to the side, fiery locks flying over her shoulders.

The next thing he did had her seething as she scoffed. He was already heading off into the building and the old man ushered them in.

She didn't want to make the first impression of a brute. She lowered her balled fist and cleared her throat. "Hmph." Deep breaths, Vera. Deep breaths. Now was not the time to unleash her fury, she had better things to take care of and Yukio would not get the better of her. She stepped in and willed an amiable expression on the flip of a dime. She was skilled at switching like that, all thanks to her training as an actress. It was as if she were another person in front of the NPC, a sweet smile on her face.

For god sakes, she was doing the same quest at the same time. The odds couldn’t of been more in the favor of him having bad luck. If he was a betting man, he’d bet against himself. Figures it would have her in this game. The word four eyes just made him shake his head. Her demeanor was childish and it just struck a chord with him that this was actually happening.

He didn’t say anything as the NPC began talking to him about the quest details. Seeing her change her personality like that seemed like schizophrenia to him. The ability to turn off and on that so called ability. When he had that ability, it as just to fake it to get out of confrontation. She did this for a damn living. He pressed both fingers up to the bridge of his nose to rub it slightly. This was going to be a long day.

When the details were done, he walked out immediately without saying another word. Being confined with her made death seem more befitting for him. Even better was that they had to look for the ingredients at the same picking site. Great. Might as well smash his face in and knock him out until next day so he could focus on doing it by himself. “Stay in your lane.” He spoke to her.

The quest was a simple one, she wouldn't have chose it otherwise. She nodded along to the old man's instruction, hands clasped behind her back. "No problem, Zakariah. I'll be off now." She waved and side eyed the young man walking out the door. How rude of him to not even say goodbye to the man. Not that she'd care, technically, he was an NPC and all of these things seemed to have amnesia. How did she know? Let's just say that she might have... taken her anger out on one. The next time around, that sod was oblivious as all hell. She was kinda glad the NPC man forgot, his restaurant was the one she'd be dining at tonight and she'd be damned if she couldn't feast on the best ramen in town.

She stepped out the door and eyed the quest marker, realization dawning upon her. "God damn it," she muttered, under her breath. She inhaled sharply and looked up at the sky. Was this a test from the gods or something? Divine intervention in the means of training her temper? She rolled his eyes as he spoked at her and once he looked away, she mocked him as she mouthed his words back.

"Cool, then stay in yours. I call dibs on the left side, capeesh'?" She noted how his long legs took longer strides with ease, leaving her far behind. It was all but comical as she sped past him just to stay a fraction above his leisure speed.

Annoyance level 9000. This had to be punishment for either not giving that man money or watching YouTube at work when he had completed his project for the next 3 months. Stay on the left? Really? "Except, I don't listen to you?" He remarked. There was nothing tying him to her other than the fact she had a cute figure and regrets already were made when he made that comment to the magazine that asked him about her. Of course, he couldn't say she was a limelight hog. No, he had to say she was cute to save face of the question.

His strides were longer than her speed walking. Why the hell were they even competing with each other. The more he thought about it, the more it seemed childish especially since she was around. "I realize you are compelled to act like you are a cut above the rest, but too bad. You are just like me."He made a heart with his hands and put them together for her, then suddenly stuck his middle fingers at her. "I don't  care what side you are on. Just finish the damn quest so we don't have to deal with each other."

She twitched. She was here trying to be civil about it and he just had to go there. She closed her eyes for a moment and made a gesture with her hand as if to contain her temper. To no avail. She whipped around and side stepped in front of him. "Oh yeah, rank two?" She made a peace with her fingers and propped her other hand on her hip. "Don't be salty now." Vera craned her head up to meet his gaze. His eyes are all but black, probably to mirror his soul or something. Rude, cocky shits were a dime a dozen to her, she'd been around these types of kids for half her life and the worst part was faking an amiable expression as they walked over her. No more. She could be an unapologetic bitch and nobody would hold her back this time.

She spun on her heels and clasped her hands behind her back. She pretended to be cool with the fact he'd just flipped her off, all while seething inside. She wasn't hurt one bit, just agitated she'd have to put up with his banter the whole way through. She had to one-up him, her pride couldn't handle it otherwise. "I don't make the rules." She shot him a greasy smile and took off ahead of him.

She gave him something to think about, she was certain of it. Their guilds were rivals in the game before, but hers prevailed more often than not. She had the illusion that it was all her doing, when in reality she'd been fortunate to snag some masterminds in the fray. The lowest blow to the other was when she'd stolen a few of his own to add to her shiny colleciton.

She wiggled her fingers in a sarcastic wave, leaving him far behind.

She was pure tragedy in his eyes. The thought of her trying to get under his skin. It seemed to work, however, as she ran ahead of him. They had already made it out the open gates and she turned to wave at him. But when she did, he had waved right back with a material in his hand. A slight grin crossed his face as the wave continued. What a joke. “Maybe you should actually open your eyes and pay attention instead of trying to be a dumbass 90 percent of the time. This isn’t a joke here… Moron.” He went to the other side of the area.

Avoidance was needed. She was going to cause him to get a rash and she was the only one who could do it. Her pompous attitude, egocentric megalomaniac, and her grinding voice were all too much for him. He would pity her boyfriend in reality. Or was it a paid escort. Who knew… or really who cared? He continued his merry gathering without her. Of course, it didn’t’ stop her from following him either.

That shit-eating grin was wiped off her face as soon as it surfaced. She turned around and staggered to a halt, a bright flush on her cheeks. No way... he'd one-upped her already? The bastard was swift, she underestimated his competence. She fumbled with herself to try at a comeback, she only looked pathetic as she stuttered. "W-W-"

She inhaled sharply as he inched closer to her. She eyeballed the material in his hand, it fit the bill and she did not want to admit that. The redhead cleared her throat. "That's just one, smartass." She jutted her chest out to assert a pitify display of dominance. Enough with his trifling jabs, she would get to work like she planned. The field opened up at the outskirts, a valley of things to pluck. She'd spotted a special bloom wedged under a rock and side eyed to see if he was aware. Hah. He had no clue this one was right under his nose, she'd be the one to claim it proudly before his grubby hands could get to em'.

She all but dove for the large boulder trapping the bloom. She struggled with the root and it was made of some foreign titan material - apparently. She grunted, pulling her tiny frame back to attempt to uproot it. "What. The. Fuck...-" She yelped as she fell back on her bum, the boulder collapsing over the mat. "No, no, no-"

She was so close!

Gods, she wouldn't hear the end of it.

The look on her face was absolute money for him. The fact that he was able to catch ahead of her made him grin from ear to ear. He was too busy paying attention to her that he sort of half assed looking for another one. It failed, of course, but the sweet little victory of him finding one before her made him still as ecstatic. “You should try to find it with your face closer to the ground. It’d probably be easier that way. “He mocked. Seeing her fail brought joy for some reason. It was only a material quest but to him this was priceless.

As far as he could remember, the game they played before she was a shit show of a leader. Always making certain things happen all because she had some flair and the ability to get players to come to her because she had status. Ugh. That irked his entire being as he moved away from her.

She was, in all ways, humiliated as she felt the mud beneath her. She cringed as she felt the soil between her fingers. She pushed herself off the ground and stumbled back as she almost lost footing again. God damn it. Another short joke and she would lose it. She whipped her head around, fiery locks flying wild with her. They'd been dissheveled from the wind. She flung the soil from her fingertips and tucked her hair behind her ears.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever."

She had nothing to say in return this time, cat got her tongue. She stomped ahead, head held high despite losing already. She could not let this jerk have the upper hand. In this world she was not competitive. She lounged around all day and couldn't give two fucks, without a motive to escape unlike most folks around. Yukio returning, however, it ignited the competitive streak she held dormant. She was so wrapped up in her own head that she failed to notice the material right beside her.

That failed material beside her was now his. He marched up and snatched that so fast. Four eyes huh? Least he could see the damn thing. “Well. Would you look at that…”He tucked it into his inventory before waking away from her to the sound or running water. “What was that again? Second?” He gave her the finger as he walked away. “You can be number one. Just like now.” He wasn’t laughing or snickering. His voice was cold and unmoving as he spoke to her. There was no sass that some people would hear. His tone was almost unnerving as they continued on with their little competition.

He ran fingers through his black hair and squatted down looking for more materials closer to the water side. Those alchemic herbs would need a source of water to grow on top of good sunlight. Meet Yukio. Gathering expert. Finding things was always something he was good at. Unlike a certain someone he knew.

Were the gods out to get her today or something? She mouthed back at him and once he'd turned his back, she returned the bird with an aggressive stomp of her foot. Oh no, lord help her tiny rage that was threatening to unleash full throttle. Nothing would save him from the karate chop she wanted to execute so badly. Not that she knew karate, but she damn could if he pissed her off enough. She was barely holding on as her eye twitched. She trailed behind him, boring holes into his back and muttering obscenities only she would hear.

He approached the stream to look, an idea that Vera had yet to consider. Clever. She took notes in her head and moved past him. She spotted a herb right under the steam of a bush and dove for it. She blew him a raspberry as she held it up, waving it in the air. "Kiss my ass. How's it going there with those two little daises you got?" She jutted her hip forward and kissed the herb. Come to mama. She stowed it away and kept moving.

She sure had some bark in her even after finally finding her first material. He shook his head slightly. A sore loser she was. “You know, some people actually have a little back up when they talk. You found one. I’m sure every kindergartener child is going to be terrified of an oompa Loompa finally finding something worthwhile.” He casted a gaze upon her. He realized there was nothing around here for him to find so he made his way inland a bit.

“I find your attitude… lacking. You like to act like Miss Prissy when those cameras are rolling but quite vulgar when no one is around you save me of course. Everyone’s thinking of a way to get out of here and they don’t get a chance to look at you.” He looked at her with a grin on his face. “But you’ll be number two in my book.” He tilted his head as he waved goodbye to another area.

Vera, for all her life, had lived putting up facades to mask her true intentions and emotions. She was dynamic, she could bounce back just like that with a little improv - but something about Yukio had struck a sensitive nerve and she felt a little wounded. "I-I-" she choked out. She couldn't deny the second half of his little ramble, she was fake as fuck and didn't try to hide it around him. He knew just what to say to get her seething, a walking, talking wildcard in her scheme.

She couldn't even think of a decent quip as she scoffed instead. She made up for it with a bold stance, however her expression and her silence didn't match. "Wait a minute," she started. "I ain't fake! You're just-" she trailed off, looking up to conjure the words, "You're just..." All she could hear was Oompa Loompa over and over in her head, disrupting her train of thought. It's not her freaking fault she got the short genes in the fam. He was already so far off by then, he could hardly hear her.

She hung her head in defeat and looked at those damned blossoms. There was nothing here of use and she traveled the opposite direction, far away from the idiot. She would find her damned herbs somewhere else. Her plan backfired as she was utterly lost. "UuuHhh..." Where the hell was she? A hideous, oversized bug landed on her skin and she let out a blood curdling shriek. "EEEEEH! Get offa meee!" She swatted at her arm in a frenzy.

He leaned over and found another material herb that was identified for what was needed to be collected. Her words that she stuttered did her no favors as he hummed walking around. The materials were starting to get easier to find for him as he found her come back nonexistent. It was fun. But also embarrassing. If she knew he had looked her up on his phone back in the day to figure out how she was, it’ be embarrassing as all creation. She’d never find out.

Her yelling caused him to flinch. War Hammer was drawn out immediately and he came back looking to see what possibly could of attacked her. “. . .” A bug. It was a damn bug that she was screaming at. A sigh escaped his lips as he stared at her for a moment. He came back to save her but this was dumb. It was hardly noteworthy for him to come back.

Vera's absolute weakness was anything hideous, including bugs. She recoiled at the sight of them whenever they were around and froze like a clam. When one had landed on her, she about lost her shit screaming. It was some ridiculously oversized cockroach that loved to fly. "Seriously Aincrad?" She all but sobbed as she waved her arm around. She felt her soul leave her body as it clung to her. She didn't want to smack the thing and have guts all over her nice battle garb, yet simultaneously she was too scared to even touch it. She flailed along like she was on fire or something pressing was happening.

It was nothing.

Once Yukio approached, hammer ready and everything, she pointed her arm at him. "H-Help. It won't get offa meee." She had about ruined her tough impression now, but it was a giant cockroach. Giant. "It's so gross," she continued. This was yet another reason the hikkikomori hated the outdoors with a passion. There was so much vermin out here to get her, it had even manipulated her to ask her worst enemy for help.

Was this really happening? Was this a dream? Was the queen ACTUALLY asking for assistance? Oh, there was no way he was going to pass this up. He picked up the bug and shooed it away from her. He placed it on the ground but also it walked by a material. He picked it up and looked at her. Was she always this tiny? He hadn’t really paid attention but he leaned on his hammer watching her. “So. Bugs huh?” This would be embedded in his memories for the rest of his life.

The tough exterior had all but disappeared from her. This was her vulnerable part that he wanted to see. Not some stuck up princess who wanted to use her heels like a damn weapon. “You need a bodyguard? Since you know, we be in the woods and all. Another bug might make you its meal.” It was a smart ass comment but also sort of a serious question for her to choose yes or no from.

She was shaken and all but hyperventilating until he'd removed the horrifying insect from her forearm. "Th-" she bit her tongue to catch herself. Saying thanks to her worst enemy? Not on her watch. Vera was shaken and it was all but pitiful watching her move past it. "No, that was no ordinary bug," she corrected, with a jab of her finger to his armor clad chest. "That was a goddamn monster thing." She visibly shuddered at the image of it and turned with her back facing him.

"No...?" Her answer was almost hesitant as she trailed off. No, she didn't need anything from him! She looked to her right and spotted a stray herb. "Ohhh sweet motherlode." She dove for the herb and plucked it from the earth. She was giddy adding it to her inventory, this time without a quip as the bug fiasco had done a number on her.
