Whelp. That was all he needed to hear. He made his way back to where he was. “Later.” He waved again and moved out of sight once more. He didn’t see any materials on his way to the next spot. She annoyed him pretty well. The only reason why he came back was because he didn’t want her death to haunt him.  He glanced from area to area looking for a material he didn’t see thus far.

His mind drifted slightly about her. What were the odds that she would be here to harass him like any other? This was indeed a cruel joke and he shouted. “Don’t go looking for herbs near trees, they have insects. “ He turned a corner of a tree an looked to see if there were anymore materials for him to collect.  He was determined to beat her since they kinda knew each other from before.

She frowned as he walked on off. As soon as he flicked that bug off her, he was all the way out there again and she was standing there, a little petrified at the notion of so many more... critters out there. She wanted him far away with his annoying ass, but then she was at her wits end without anybody to defend her from those pests. She eyeballed the tree she'd picked that herb from at his commentary. No bugs, what was he talking about?

Vera swallowed her pride and tailed him at a good distance. She would never admit that she needed a personal bug swatter. Her fiery locks were tangled from rolling in the dirt and the little freakout just a moment ago. There was nothing to be found anywhere. She cocked a brow. "Hey, genius!" Vera called from afar. "Y'sure you know what you're doing? This place is barren as hell."

How the hell can someone be cocky when she was behind him? He had double the amount of materials she had and needed one more to head back. Contemplating the situation, he moved toward another side of the area away from her. Her stupidity was starting to rub off on him. Her vulgar tongue tried to draw him into a trap and he wasn’t going to allow that to happen. “Don’t be an idiot. Did you graduate school? I’m ahead of you and here you are running your mouth. “ He shook his head.

He glanced around but found nothing. He needed to stay away from the brat incase she had more bad luck willing to float his way. His movements began to head toward a different region of the forest that contained the same plant life. She was going to be by herself and he wasn’t going to run to her aid if she started screaming for help.

She snorted. "Please, don't get cocky now." He was running off with his cursed long strides. It was pissing her the hell off, how did his legs even work? He didn't even try and he was gaining quite a distance over her. She didn't even get another word in and was left behind. What a jerk! She didn't need him around, she could take on a troop of goddamn bugs on her own. Screw him. She huffed and took off in the other direction. The path winded and she headed far away from where she needed to be.

Vera squinted at her HUD. Huh? Some sort of... bloom? She looked around to see nothing but twigs and useless leaves. She scrunched her nose in annoyance. Was she just dumb today? Vera let out an exasperated sigh. Nope, nope, she would be damned if it looked like she was following him. She'd just have to make do with this area over here.

By this time, he had made it to another area. He was happy not to hear her little barks and complaints. "Damn maniac." He uttered while looking for useful materials. This was not what he had expected on his first quest. He wanted to fight and raise his skills. It was unorthodox to be looking  for a random plant to make a potion. He listened  carefully to his surroundings since it had gotten quieter.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened. He sat down and stretched his arms up. He could just hang out here and hopefully something would spawn right here for him to collect. It was relaxing where he was. So why was he concerned about the girl? Stupid idiot. His face got red just thinking about the annoying brat. What is her problem anyway. Acting like a damn know it all when we all are new. He was a pissy person for sure.

Gods, this area she chose was barren. Vera frowned and threw her hands in the air. "Well shit." Guess it was time for a game plan after all. Maybe Yukio knew his shit after all... All the lady did was get more lost in this damned forest-meadow shit hole. As much as she hated it, she was walking out of the quest range and forced to choose the only direction left, right where Yukio had headed. "For fuck's sake." She'd just get this over with.

She twisted on her heels and made way through the forest floor, out into the wide open. She stopped for a moment to admire the beauty. The sky was a crystal clear blue, white puffy clouds floating on the horizon. Little blossoms decorated a bed of lush green, a good sign. "Ooh, blooms. So many," she thought aloud. It didn't help that they were all the same frickin' color in dozens of different variations. Was she really going to cherry pick them all to be safe? She sighed and leaned down. She made her best bet as she peered at the picture on her HUD.

Yup, that one.

The little rest rejuvenated his mind and soul. He casually stood up and dusted all of those dust particles off his body. Blackened eyes would look around the area and he found it under his feet. Damn straight! He snatched that material and began humming a happy tune. He walked back to town without another thought as he felt like he won. He passed her and gave her a slight wave. " Hey there loser. Looks like you aren't done! Well damn. Shucks. Sucks to suck." He was pretty  gleeful at the moment.

He advanced away and gave another wave to her. " Hope to never see you again." Well. Maybe if he managed to see her acting cute. Then maybe. He shook those devious  thoughts away. Shes an ass. A jerk. Someone who needs to realize not everyone worships her. Like him. He sighed happily. Time to go back to the town and work on the potion.

God, the mere sound of his voice was grating her ears. "Tch." She whipped around to see the culprit waving that herb around, a shit-eating grin on his face. She squinted and folded her arms over her chest. "Hmm, is that so?" She retorted. "I bet you do a lot of that." She was, in truth, salty about her defeat. He'd already won the first phase of this self proclaimed competition and was on to the next. She could only dream of finding what she needed, he had the upper hand in the sense of observance. She'd never win at this rate, and her stomach was killing her. On cue, it growled and squeezed in demand of sustenance. She bopped a fist against her abdomen to try and silence it.

Yukio was walking away already, she had to act fast. "Hollup, asswad. I have a proposal!" She hollered, her tiny frame paced up to him. She was winded, bent over with her palms on her knees as she panted. "The hell?" She straightened her posture and propped her hands on her hips. "The fuck you runnin' for?" Anyway. "So you clearly have a map of this floor or some shit. If you can assist... I'll um," She choked on her words and twiddled her thumbs. Her cheeks began to flush a little. Why was she asking him for help? Over her dead body.

"I'll spare you some cash. How's that sound...?" Vera sucked in her breath and looked up at him in anticipation. There was a hint of desperation in her look, a bit of discomfort due to lowering her pride down a peg. He had to say yes. If he declined, she'd be up schitt's creek and it would embarrass her even more.

Wow. A reference like that would be tucked in his head. "So… you are telling me.. You'll pay money for help?" He wasn't  strapped for cash, oh no, he was perfectly fine the way he was. The grin on his face was out of the fact she was actually asking for help. But what the hell was  with her stomach? Did she forget to eat or something? He was extremely  observant and she wasn't good at hiding things. A sigh escaped his lips as he ran his fingers through his HUD. Inventory opened and out popped a meat bun. He had managed to snag  a few before heading out.

"Here. Before I go deaf." He looked at her. Despite him calling her out, she was pretty.  Easy on the eyes. No wonder her guild was all over her. He crossed his arms. "I found my materials behind you near the water. They need to be hydrated." He stayed waiting  for her.

She frowned and gave him a skeptical look when she noticed that grin on his face. "...Yes?" He must have been relishing this, the mightier than thou Vera asking him for help. She had given him the wrong impression for sure now. Would there be any way to assert dominance after she practically implored for his help? She mentally facepalmed. Shit, shit, shit! She could have done this herself!  She visibly cringed as she searched his expression. She watched his every gesture, amber eyes trailing to his palms as he nursed a meat bun.

The aroma lingered to her and her mouth watered. She squinted at him. It was probably laced. She tapped her forearm and pondered. She didn't believe that Yukio had any ounce of kindness in his soul, or lack thereof. Her eyes roved over the steaming meat bun, her inhibitions taken over by a sudden wave of hunger. She all but snatched it from his palm without a thank you and ran off, as if he didn't exist. She headed right for the stream while her face was stuffed with half of the bun already. She hummed in satisfaction and continued munching by the river bank.

She noticed a herb swaying in the water, anchored down by a formidable root. She knelt down and plucked it from the earth, other hand preoccupied with the meat bun. She stood up and walked past him on the way to town without another word. If he wanted that money, he'd have to chase her down first.

What a bitch. Still stuck up with a stick up her...anyway. No thank you or anything. Seeing her walk off meant she had already eaten like a wildebeest. Uncouth as they come. Then she passed him. Must of taken his advice about where it was. It took him no time flat to catch up to her. It wasn't about the money. No. It was something else. " Yanno. When people get things, they say thank you. I guess your vocabulary is limited to cussing. So I guess you'll  be in my debt."

His longer strides allowed him to be quicker. If people found out she owed him, it would cost her a lot more than just money. Whatever. He stayed silent for the rest of the trip  back. He stepped up to the alchemists station immediately and went to work.

He knew what he was doing for the most part since  he had done this in various mmos before. After a second, the potion was complete. He handed it to the NPC. " Done."

She ignored his quips. She had everything she needed and she was satisfied, she had no use for him anymore and it was back to square one. She kept her distance and the walk back to town was a silent yet awkward one. She side eyed him every now and then, he was ignoring her after he got over her attitude. They arrived at the shop and that bubbly demeanor of hers switched on. She greeted Zakariah with a bright smile and stepped inside. The instructions for the potion were simple, she'd done this before in MMO's. She waved in dismissal whenever the man tried to help, it seemed to grate his nerves a little but he was still kind despite it all.

That was her downfall.

She messed up the proportions, the liquid turning a disturbing shade of black. She side eyed Yukio and his cyan blue vial, a perfect image of what was expected. Zakariah praised him and took the vial. She chewed her lip nervously and watched as the NPC took her vial. He shook his head and set it aside, preparing her a new batch to work on.

The self proclaimed holy queen failing?! Stop the presses. It was like a dream come true. He noticed her attitude change immediately from pissy to cheery faster than a damn dog in heat. He stared at her for a second. He really didn't like that side of her. "You should stick to being a bitch. It suits you more. The NPCs are programmed with a variety of answers but they don't  have their own personality." Though this game could be one hell of a break through.

"I like ya better that way anyway." He muttered as he sat in the wooden chair looking at her. From this view, he just watched her from behind. It was a nice view.  One he rarely actually took the time to look at. When she moved, his eyes averted away just like that. What was he doing here anyway? "You aren't letting the potions cook long enough." Why the hell was he helping  her?

Vera rolled her eyes at his distracting commentary, the bubbly guise dropping on a dime. "Look genius-" She could have sworn she caught him glancing at her derrière. She inwardly scoffed. Ah, of course, she pegged him to be the type with a one-track mind. She was caught off guard and ridiculing him internally, simultaneously. She looked away for a moment and jutted her hip out, feigning ignorance. She picked up the vial and threw a few ingredients in. She swirled a mixture of the component and moved her gaze to him. "Uh, actually no. I don't know who taught you that." She made a face and poured in the solution, stirring it together.

The NPC watched them with a neutral expression. He only responded to certain triggers and watched him passively, as if their bantering had never happened. "The key is-" She halted and her eyes widened as she sniffed something foul. No healing potion smelled like that. She whipped her head to the beaker and shrieked as the dark goop bubbled out the funnel. She leaned over it, panicking. Not even Zakariah was quick to save her from a stream of the matter splashing her face.

"Oh my god, eww!"

She shrieked and brought a hand up to her face, feeling the stinging disgrace of a "potion" on her forehead.

He crossed his legs and watched from behind. Was she modeling? Did she know he was watching her? Interesting. A smile crossed his face as he just watched her derriere region. It was probably one of her better qualities he had to think of. It was the next thing that slightly shocked him. Her scream took him out of his thought process before he noticed she had messed up again.

The smell  was horrible but he was far back enough that he wasn't  in much  danger with the smell. He looked at her and spoke. "Do you need help?" Of course, he flashed  her a smile. He was rather enjoying himself, not for her misery but he was taking the time to actually think about how she was attractive. A tilt of his head was given and he was actually infatuated. Damn. He was never  going to tell her that.

She was irate as her fingers skimmed over the goop. It stuck to her like tar, impossible to get out of. She whipped around to face Yukio and lashed. "No, fuck off." She cringed and searched for a napkin or frickin' something to clean herself with. Zakariah was like a living vegetable, not even fazed by her freakout. "Get me a damn towel or somethin'!" She gestured at the NPC, who miraculously understood her. "Ugh." She snatched the wet wash cloth and wiped her face.

Vera had lost all semblance of that bubbly facade, a grinch in all ways. Zakariah cleaned off the counter and prepared another fresh set for her to work on. She exhaled sharply and got to work. Yet. Another. Goof up. She was unenthused by another black goopy vial. She made a point to stay at a distance lest she got assaulted by that beaker again. She was convinced now, this game was rigged and it made no sense how she failed three potions in a row.

Or was she that dumb?

Her snapping at him just made him grin even more. There was something about her he couldn’t figure out but she sure had this fiery attitude. This was different than the other girls that treated him like he was a godsend without a fight. He hated them. In fact, they were always set up by the company. He tapped his fingers on his chin and watched her struggle. Was it far to say that he was actually a brainy doctor in reality? But he watched her movements, especially the derriere area of hers. It was almost hypnotizing to him and she was actually moving it in a subtle way.

Down boy. He thought as he stood up and walked over to her. “Listen. You may not want my help but I’m not gonna sit here and just watch. Pour it at this line and the other one at this line. Churn the herbs and mix it slower.” Free advice. Really? The hell is wrong with him today? Perhaps it was because his payment was… watching her.

Vera was at her wits end. She was doing everything correctly to her knowledge, apparently pea brain to the extent of this game. She threw her hands in the air in defeat and rolled her eyes as Yukio approached the table. “What’d’ya want?” She groaned. He was actually trying to help and didn’t stand there bitching.

She didn’t need his help.

But she was tired of just standing here doing moot. It was more time spent with that pest. “Alright,” she started, with a smug look. “We’ll test this bullshit.” She had a feeling his advice would be moot. She followed his instructions to rub his lack of expertise in his face.

Wait, what?

She blanched as the potion brewed in harmony. The liquid transitioned into a soft cyan, a thin, viscous texture instead of that hideous tar she battled. The alchemist snatched the potion and applauded her. All while, her face flushed red and she refused to face Yukio. She was a sore loser until she followed his advice.

She snatched the package from the NPC and stormed out the door in a flurry of orange locks. She would race to that damned blacksmith before Yukio even had a chance to give her hell. Crisis averted! She was triumphant as she blended into a crowd, masked from his sight to her knowledge.

That was the funniest shit he had seen. He wasn’t even trying to make it that good but she followed directions quite well. She took off and he accepted his quest prize. He handed all the materials that he had spare and walked out. He was sure that the second quest would be here as well but none the less it was hilarious to him.  He simply walked in a different direction and opened up his HUD. He flicked open a message and a friend request was sent to her.

Quote

“Listen… We can be dicks to each other for the rest of our lives. But I’d rather not be a dick for the remainder of the game life I’m here. So, here’s my friend request. You can have it or deny it. I don’t care. Also, if your hungry, I know a good place. Hit me up.”

He didn’t realize that she was headed in the same direction as he was as he hit send. A slight grin crossed his face as he walked slower to watch her scurry off and for another derriere reason.

She was sure she’d lost him now, so far into the crowd. Little did she know, he was heading down the same path as her anyways. The package was a heavy nuisance so she opened her inventory to store it. Just as she clicked, a message and a friend request chimed in.

Huh?

Vera blinked incredulously at the message. What’s it to him? She debated for a while about how to reply or whether or not she would accept Yukio’s request. He was a royal pain in the ass, but how could she one-up her rival if she didn’t have a way of contacting him? She cleared her throat and hit accept. She left him a sweet note to remember her by.

“You’re*”

She shrugged and continued to book it for the blacksmith. He’d still be on the same path and she didn’t want to see him right after she accepted it. She reached the blacksmith and all but tossed the package at the man. “Here, now give me my shit please? I’m starving.” She accepted the Col with a giddy clap.

Ramen, here we go!
