[PP | FL12] Lord of The Seas/Mud is the enemy

Recommended Posts

Wanna hear a dirty Joke? Johnny fell in the mud! Wanna hear a clean joke? Johnny took a bath! This was legitimately a dirty joke with the sheer amount of mud that he had seen outside the town. They weren’t kidding that it was muddy but he didn’t know the extent of it at all. He looked down at Pingu who had this look in her eyes that she wanted to slide on her belly onto the mud. “Don’t do it..” He glanced at his penguin.

He sent a message to Freyd and Haine to meet him here in this rainy area of the floor. It was strange. He hadn’t seen it rain here before but when he activated the quest, the rain just… sorta came and flooded the area. Of course, the theme was to kill something that could electrify you in a good few seconds. That thought  made him shiver slightly as he waited for the other two.

"More water?" Freyd asked, as he approached, a giant grin on his pasty-looking face.  "You want to see if electrocution will suit you better than combustion, is that it?"

The water fell around him, but most of it somehow seemed to avoid touching him.  Freyd actually felt more comfortable and at home in the more extreme environments.  The greater the intensity of heat, cold, or toxic plague, the happier he seemed to be.

"What are we after this time?"  His hands were casually stuffed in his pockets, an old and simple grey cloak draped over top of his leathers.  "Giant demonic octopus-thing?  Plastic water bottle elemental?  Maybe someone flushed a baby chia pet down the sewer and it mutated into some kind of vitriolic aquatic kudzu?"  The looks crossing Kil's face suggested that he wasn't even close.  Freyd was too obsessive and meticulous not to have scoured the quest description for every available detail.  "Is Haine not here yet?"

Haine peered at the marker on the map. She could remember that area, that rainy, muddy mess where she battled that dreaded sea noodle. It was a relatively easy foe but a cumbersome one to handle. She wasn't sure what Kil's agenda was, but she would be damned if she showed up unprepared. Haine slipped on her coat and pulled the hood over her head. Her cub wanted to be fancy too, apparently. He tugged a handkerchief and dropped it on Haine's lap. "Sweeeet. Feelin' purple today, bud?" She pat the empty spot on the bed and the cub clawed his way up. She tied the cloth around his neck and appraised it. "Fierce. Let's get a move on, now."

She arrived at the rendezvous point and was pelted by a  downpour of rain. "The fuck?" It wasn't sprinkling like last time, it was a fucking downpour. She pulled the hood over her eyes a little and cringed. What was up with the weather today? She spotted the two and ran under cover beside them. The cub frolicked around in a puddle of water.

"Eeeee. What's up with this place today?"

“Yeah. I have a electrifying personality so I wanted to be lit up like it as well.” Jokes aside, water was better than being in fire or heat for that matter. Now if lightning struck a tree, then he would be a little upset since he preferred to be unscathed majority of the time. He moved to the exit where the mud seemed to just go around the entrance instead of going into town. At least the place was protected enough that they could walk when the mud wasn’t moving as much. Then again, they’d waste a lot of time that way. He sighed slightly before walking back.

It’s the quest, Haine. I flagged it and the rain came despite it being a sunny day moments ago to overcast…to whatever this is He glanced over at Freyd. “But this time, you don’t have a lantern to throw unless you pull it out of your inventory. Then I’ll know the truth that you mean it”

"Hey!"  Freyd raised both arms with hands wide open in surrender.  "Who knows?  Maybe this time I'll accidentally knock Haine into your arms.  Worse things could happen, I'm sure!"

He called up his UI with quest notes on this particular field boss.  "This beast hit harder than anything I've ever faced before, but if we time our attacks right, it will never get the chance.  I doubt it will last a single round against the three of us, but it would still be prudent to stun it, if possible.  Kiluia has the best single stun attack among us, and should hit it first.  Haine and I can use our own if it becomes necessary.  I don't want either of you getting hurt... at least, if it can be avoided."  He gave Kiluia another apologetic look.

"Oh, and have you two picked a date yet?"  He had no idea what tradition they were intending to follow, and waited for details rather than assuming any.

"Yeah, clearly." Haine frowned and pulled the raincoat over her head to evade the rain. "This floor has bipolar weather, I'm actually not surprised." She shrugged and turned to face Freyd. "Freeeyd," she acknowledged, with a soft smile. "How long have you guys been chillin' here?" Let alone in this rain? She looked about and didn't see many other places with shelter from this nuisance. They must have been close to that quest location. She nodded along as the two discussed a game plan. It seemed an awful lot like the quest she had taken on before. A pop-up to party was sent to her and she skimmed it. "Oh, this lil' sucker?" She looked up, the cogs in her mind working.

"Angry, giant lightning snake, pretty much. Scale on its back is tough to penetrate." She all but winced as she recalled the time she tried to attack, her spear barely skimming the surface of the sea snake's scales. She was thrown off its back and winded for the rest of the battle. The topic derailed to the couple and Haine mused. "We haven't decided yet." She patted Kiluia's shoulder. "Sometime..." she trailed off, with a cryptic note. She gave Freyd the element of suspense, albeit she didn't know the answer herself.

This woman and her cryptic messages. He didn’t propose yet, kinda. He was ready to propose to her and was waiting patiently for the right time, but when was the right time? He looked at them with their questionable conversation before looking up at the sky and the erratic weather.  He looked back down at them and then to his penguin who was ready to roll into the mud and not regret doing so. “The date isn’t set in stone yet. I’m thinking maybe next month?” He antagonized her. Two could play this game.

Footsteps began toward the exit of the town and remarked on Freyd’s analysis. “If we do it right we can finish it off in one hit. Otherwise, if we don’t, ones going to bet a major shock to their system.” He looked at his friend and his beloved. Knowing that they could be struck hard caused him a little bit to be alarmed but he would shake it off and look at the mud. “The mud is going to play a big game changer if we all miss on him.

Following Kiluia into the field, Freyd already had his sword at the ready.  The tension between his companions was clear.  Technically, it was none of his business.  They both knew that they could speak to him, if they wished.  But maybe he could risk being the bad guy in order to help clear the air.

"Sooo... everything doesn't sound like it's all settled yet.  I'm not planning to open a can of worms - especially here - but just know that I'm pretty good at listening, if either of you need it."  It might be best to leave things at that.  The storm worsened the closer they got to the battlefield, sheets of water swept over the three of them relentlessly.  Freyd just seemed to ignore them, and the airborne waves acquiesced, bending around him.

"There.  Up ahead."  He pointed to a small rise in the low tides.  "Let's get this done."

Haine's eyes widened slightly at the quip. They weren't technically engaged yet. She recovered from that and played it off with a chuckle. "Mmm, somethin' like that then?" She turned her attention to the rain pelting down. She was grateful to have prepared for this floor's inclement tendencies. She tucked her strands under the edge of the coat. Her cub was dancing around in the rain, muddy water splashing onto his white coat. She scrunched her nose, the cub would get a good hosing down before he could even think to step into their home.

The bluenette shrugged at Freyd's commentary. "We'll figure it out in time. You'll get the memo!" She shot him a wink and turned her attention to the rising tides ahead. Their conversation was cut short by the crashing waves in the distance. The further in they got, the harder the wind blew and the stronger the rain poured. The mud squelched beneath her feet as she advanced. "Ew, let's get this over with." Her boots stuck to the soil as she moved, it was mushy and she was anxious that it would threatened to give. They'd reached shore at last, the waves crashing violently upon their arrival.

"Show yourself, sea noodle!"

Surely enough, a gargantuan sized sea dragon emerged. It swirled its limbs into a coil and lashed, a scatter of lightning touching the ground. Haine squeaked and evaded a bolt, a little too close for comfort. She waited for the serpent's head to come in range and drove the spear into its side.

The fact she called it a sea noodle made him crack up. Eyes of amber filled with tears from her terrible joke. He was the king of Dad jokes as he settled down. After she struck the wyvern with her spear, he launched himself into the air above Haine. Lightning struck a tree near by causing the sky to light up behind him. His fist was raised into the air and came crashing down upon the wyvern. His fist connected into the top cranium of the beast causing it to cave in.

Seconds later, the crystals  shattered and he stood there watching the two with a smile on his face. The sky cleared up soon after as the monster was defeated. It was strange that the people came out to cheer for them. The quest holder was among the cheering and he bowed slightly "Well that was easy. "

A small smile curled Freyd's lips beneath his cowl, gleaming in the damp air as the sun finally broke back through the clouded sky.  He stretched his arms out to his sides, as if he'd somehow performed some massive feat or labout.

"Yep!  That's how we like to do it in operations.  We setup the pieces, and then let the action roll.  Nicely done, chums!"  Some small part of his was saddened that he wouldn't get to play, but that hadn't really been the point of his presence.  They were here as friends, and for the safety of greater numbers.  The way his luck had been going recently, he'd probably have ended up swallowed and shat out twenty-thousand leagues below, or some such terrible fate.  Nope, this was just fine as an alternative conclusion to their hunt, as far as he considered.  And so the matter was as good as done.

"So, what do you think of the new recruits?  They seem to be progressing well.  Word is that you've been taking them out for runs.  That's great.  What are your impressions so far?"

The wyvern fell as soon  as it surfaced. Haine puffed out her chest in victory and marveled at the beauty of the scene. As hideous and terrifying as the creature was, it looked kinda majestic laying there. Its body slumped over, and then slowly, the gravity of the waves pulled it under. Haine flinched as all the townspeople came out of hiding. Where did they come from? She beamed in light of the praise. "Not a prob, not a prob." She waved her hand in dismissal and turned to the others.

The topic of the new recruits brought a smile to the woman's face. Firm Anima was growing exponentially through word of mouth, it was tough to keep up with all these new additions. She loved most of the newcomers, they were kind and in good relations with each other. "They've been lovely," Haine added. Her cub scratched at her leg, demanding attention. The bluenette shook her head and scooped the cub into her arms. "I like Hisa! She's cute." She mused about the others. "Ooh and Vie too." She trailed off in thought. "Katoka too!"

He thought about the new members of the guild. They were all new kids in his eyes, and he looked at Freyd. “The people I’ve met so far seem dependable. Need to get to know them better a bit more so I’ll have to quest more with them as a group and individually.” He stated. They were all good people but good people can only go so far. People could give up mid-way or they could not start up at all. His eyes looked around at the mud trying to find materials he could use for his items. It could be rare, but t was worth a shot. (Gathering Materials Failed)

“What about you? Anyone you think look promising?” He looked at Freyd for an answer this time. He wanted to hear his opinion on the matter. The walk would be long so small talk would be okay for the trio to get done.

"I took @Katoka, @Vie and @Ruler out to face the sand shark.  They did fine, but the real test was about their focus and ability to work as a team.  Katoka nearly had her head in the thing's mouth.  It shook her up a bit, but she didn't wilt or break.  My guess is that she's got more backbone than she even realizes.  Vie tends to be aloof and critical, but look who's talking.  I consider those traits to be assets.  She'll go far.  Ruler is a model knight, though her demeanor reminds me more of an NPC than a player."  Freyd grew pensive for a moment, but dismissed whatever was going through his head.  "I'm sure she just needs some time to loosen up and let down her guard.  Her discipline will carry her far."

"I should really arrange a staff meeting for O&I.  Kil, you led the outfit for a while.  What can you tell me about @Kasumi and @Setsuna?"  It would help to know who I'm dealing with in advance.  I've yet to meet either of them."

Haine listened to the two chit-chat and chimed in. "Hmm, I agree. Vie's a bit hard on herself... but if she directs her drive, she'll go far." She smiled as she thought of the redhead. She'd taken a liking to the lady by far, she was one of her favorite recruits for the reason that they clicked. Vie's introverted shell was chipped at thanks to Haine's persistence. "I haven't quested with the others yet, so I have yet to know."

She turned her attention to her surroundings. It might have been strange to look for things worth while in the soil of all places, but she'd learned after a couple chance encounters that good things could be found in plain sight. She squinted at a particular patch of blooms and thought of Setsuna, she could use them to make some fabric dye. She picked some up and stored it away. As for anything useful, there was nothing to be found.

He thought about the entirety of the people met." I think Vie has a lot of determination. She has some big goals and is always ready to learn. Been through alot with her currently and shes got some will power." He stretched a bit. "Hisa did pretty well too since she took marital  arts. But I haven't met Katoka yet."

He glanced downward and found more mud. There was not much to look at with all this water and mud. No luck at all. A ligjt sigh was heard from the disappointment of the lack of materials they would find."Lets try not to kill them. The amount of new recruits shows that our guild is doing something right." He was fully aware of Freyd's jokes, but he was used to them. The others might not be too thrilled like a lantern setting him on fire or something to that extent.

Gathering  failed.

At least the miserable rain had stopped.  Freyd paused to take in the view of the surrounding landscape.  Floor twelve was a wide series of mud flats, marsh lands and denser swamps.  It had a certain beauty to it, though all of it seemed squished to a single storey height.  The trees could grow no taller due to lack of purchase for their roots, and houses lacked proper foundations, being propped up on piles.  This place seemed to prefer sprawl, compared to some of the more mountainous levels he had recently visited.  At least the constant presence of water here meant he was less likely to set poor Kiluia ablaze.  He still felt badly about that, but accidents were often an unavoidable part of battle.  Daily drills had helped him further refine his combat skills, but they were all still puppets to the random number generator.

Watching as his friends foraged the surrounding field, he smiled to himself, enjoying the simple pleasure of a stroll.  "Hey, Kiluia, did you use up to mats yet?"

Haine tuned off from the conversation and trained her attention on the shrubbery. There were useless berries that seemed... poisonous to the touch, mutated and hideous. She knelt down and peered at one, then glanced back at the picture on her HUD. "Oof, close one," she muttered. She would about freak if she picked these for snacking. The bluenette stood up and brushed her coat. The two were a good ways ahead with their long legs and long strides. Curse being short! "H-Hey, did you guys forget me?!" She paced forward, huffing. Once she'd finally caught up to the duo, she leaned forward, palms propped on her knees as she gasped for air.

Ever the same, she was easily distracted by her surroundings. She looked up and around to see that the sun broke through the gloomy clouds. As they inched closer to town, the sounds of the settlement grew louder. Medieval music filtered through the wetland outskirts, greeting them. She kinda missed the cheering, the NPC's had all but forgotten them now that their prompt was over with.

The mats were coming in at a good rate. The exchange rate he was doing with a variety of other people was working well in his department. He would look at the ground and spot something that would help him. A material that was missed by his beloved was snatched up into his hand. He looked over at Freyd and shook his head. “I’m still working on using them. I have a few items for sale but I’m still working on my cooking to be honest.” He looked at his beloved catching up and he snatched her hand up before seeing the town in the distance. “She is my taste tester so when she comes into the shop, I’m pretty sure the food is just a means for her to just eat sweets.” He grinned before looking at Freyd.

“How’s the merchant business? You doing well there?” He was hoping they were all doing okay an making progress in their respective fields.

"Business is starting to pick up, but I've barely had a chance to spend any time in the shop over the last few weeks.  I'm trying to take the O&I duties as seriously as I can, and have spent most of my time traveling between floors to make contacts and build an information network.  There's rumour of something sinister stirring in the shadows, but, really, when is there not?"

Stubbing his foot on something buried in the mud, Freyd bent down and pulled a large scale from the muck.  On its opalescent surface was a marking reminiscent of a red tower with a black sword laid over top of it, tip down.  He stared at it for a moment, pensively, flipping it over to examine the rear and scratching at the surface, running his gloved finger over the sword.

"I have to go," he said, abruptly.  "Thanks for the run, both of you.  I'll catch up soon."  He placed the scale into storage and vanished through the use of a teleport crystal before anything more could be said.
