Name: Charles Carpenter

Alias: Zenurik

Age: 28

History:

Charles was a firefighter, fulfilling a childhood dream growing up. He wanted to be like the heroes he always thought of firefighters as - diving into flames to save lives, quenching fires to stop destruction. And, of course, riding on the fire truck.

And for several years, that was exactly what Charles did - he was a successful fireman, and enjoyed hanging out with his friends in their downtime. But then tragedy struck, and reversed the course of his life forever. It began, as it always did, with a fire.

When they arrived at the house - it had to be a house, not a business place, not a restaurant, but someone's home - the fire was already burning steadily, licking up the walls and the roof. Thick curls of smoke rose from the gaps that were forming where heat caused wood or glass to shatter and break, and there was already a crowd forming to watch. It was something Charles and the other firefighters had seen time and again - a fire, watching someone's life be ruined, was a spectacle that bystanders had a hard time pulling themselves away from.

There was a family outside - a son, a father, and a mother. Charles barely registered them as he and the others worked to hook up to a fire hydrant and run their hose lines, jogging in their heavy gear as they moved. But his attention was drawn when the mother's head whipped around, frantic, back and forth - and then she let out an anguished scream that tore at his very soul.

"My baby! Emily!" She lurched, staggering towards the fire, tears streaming down her soot-stained face, and it was only her husband's arms wrapping around her that prevented her from plunging back into the flames. Charles and the others froze for a moment as the situation registered - there was still someone inside the burning house.

The next moments were a blur. The team scrambled, trying to figure out what to do - until Charles heaved the hose to one of the others, who caught it with a startled expression. Then he was gone, tearing into the house as fast as he could move. He remembered finding her, a small, blonde haired girl who was crying as she huddled in a closet, clutching a stuffed elephant. He remembered scooping her into his arms and barreling back through the house - and he remembered hearing a terrible crack sounding above him.

When he woke up, he was in the hospital, with cards from his friends on a table next to him. And another, important card - from a young girl, wishing the man who tossed her from the firey house, would wake up. When someone came by next, after the doctors - it was his captain. And his captain broke news that Charles had not noticed, in his drugged, injured state.

What had cracked above him that night was one of the support beams for the roof. Charles had reacted in a moment, flinging the girl forward, to safety - as the beam came down on top of him. It struck his head, knocking him out, then tore his oxygen tank from his back on the way down before it landed on his legs. Both femurs were shattered, and by the time the fire was quelled enough for him to be pulled out, he had suffered severe burns even through his gear.

He had saved the girl's life and all it cost was his career. His captain was solemn as he told Charles that he wouldn't be able to do more than an office job, now.

"But - she's OK? The girl isn't hurt?"  SHe hadn’t been, and when he learned that the firefighter relaxed - he’d trade his job for a child’s life happily.

----

Time passed, and slowly his body healed. As much as it could, at least - his legs were still badly scarred, with significant nerve damage. He slowly got used to moving around with the wheelchair, adjusting himself to a more passive lifestyle than he had enjoyed before. His friends and former coworkers tried to cheer him up, but as time passed and confirmation came that he wouldn’t be walking again, his mood fell more and more, spiralling into a black depression.

More and more he shut himself away from his friends as the new reality of his life set in. Insurance, pension, kept him going without having to work - which left him less reason to go out and interact with others, letting him isolate himself even more. He hadn’t had a steady girlfriend before this happened; and as days turned to weeks, to months, he pushed everyone he could away, spiraling into a dark state.

His friends succeeded in one thing though - they kept him going to therapy, even when he saw no point to it. The damage to his legs had him crippled, and he lived with a constant reminder he would never be who he once was. The only bright spot in his mood was when the little girl he saved called or sent him a letter - the reminders of what his legs had saved kept him going.

Until one day, his therapist approached him with a unique opportunity. There was a belief that, since the nerves in his spine hadn't been damaged, that something like a Full-Dive apparatus would let him walk again, albeit in a virtual world. Like a man dying of thirst in a desert, he clung to that hope as soon as it was laid before him. Seized by a drive like he hadn't had in months, Charles flew through the application processes, made a character - and when the day came, he logged in - and stood on his own two feet again.

Virtues:

Determined:

Zenurik is a strong-willed man, who can decide on a course and let's little dissuade him. Once his loyalty is gained it will be hard to lose, as will his friendship. He will do all he can to see things through to the end, throwing himself into his tasks whole-heartedly to see them accomplished. It's hard for him to hold back and gauge when less effort would work just as well, though.

Kind:

Zen tends to put other people's well being ahead of his own - if he finds someone who needs help, unless he has a strong reason not to he will do what he can to help them. He also does not approve of bullying or derogatory acts and words. He has a soft spot for children, and will try to entertain and amuse them if he has spare time.

Honest Man:

Zenurik has a strong dislike of falsehoods and slippery words - he's straightforward and plain spoken. He knows not to be overly blunt or crude in his actions, as he isn't a cruel man by nature, but be careful when asking him a question because he will either not answer, or answer directly. He understands the need sometimes for white lies to keep from hurting others, but he tends to prefer the route of silence instead.

Flaws:

Stubborn:

It takes a strong argument to dissuade Zenurik of something he has decided on. Sometimes even strong evidence will be disregarded if it goes against what he believes. Worse - he tends to be quiet about his beliefs, so it can be hard to even know when he has chosen poorly about something and needs to be corrected, and will often dissemble and try to divert attention from him.

Self-Sacrificing:

Zenurik has a history of trying too hard to help others, even at a cost to himself. He has a hard time of saying 'no' to others, even when he knows intellectually that he really should. This has led to him being somewhat gullible, as he tries to help even bad apples. He also has a tendency to forgive those who have hurt him, hoping that they have become better.

Emotional Short-fuse:

While he is recovering, Zenurik was not in the best of mental states when he joined the Game - and it suddenly becoming a Death Game did not help things at all. He has found himself to be prone to bouts of depression or almost unthinking rage at times, especially when confronted with reminders of his state in the real world. His mental state before hand can have an influence on whether he will break down or lash out, and when he does become angry it is difficult for him to discern friend from foe - and he may lash out, physically or verbally, at those around him.
