[PP-01] <<DHA:1>> A Measure of Friendship

Recommended Posts

As he wandered along with Katoka and Elora, working together to make their way through the Dragon Hunting series of quest, Freyd's mind somehow wandered to thoughts of Kiluia and Haine.  They had spoken of completing these quests together, but it had never happened.  Life got busy and each of them went their own ways.  He found himself missing their company, despite feeling somewhat like a third wheel on their adventures.

His face-planting curse during combats had also surfaced around that time.  Maybe fate was trying to give him a clue to leave the other two to their business.  Their romantic relationship, or whatever it was, had been crowding the space between them for some time.  It wasn't his business, so Freyd had done his best to avoid the topic.  Still..

Hey.  Haven't heard from you in a while, and Kil's been busy with stuff.  Finally got working on the dragon anthology series with some of the kids (Elora and Katoka).  Good bunch.  If you want to run the first couple of quests and catch up, let me know.

Been worried about you.

"No, no you may not have a bite."

Haine, through a mouthful of spicy noodles, was not amused. The polar bear resting faithfully at her feet stood up on his hind legs, scratching at her calf. She quirked a brow and looked down at the demanding creature. The fuzzball should know better than anyone that his master wasn't one to share food. One glance into those soft, sparkling eyes and she was done for. "Oh, piss off!" She set her chopsticks down on top of her bowl and frowned. Mishka was like a cat, never concerned until something yummy came around.

A chime disrupted her thoughts and the cub flinched, startled.

Freyd? Haine opened her HUD and scanned the message. It had been a while since they quested. She couldn't help but recall the imagery of him stumbling into monkey balls. Despite the horror of the situation then, she could only laugh now. A slight chortle escaped her lips as she swiped up to reply. She couldn't part from her food and decided on speech to text.

Hey Donkey Kong, How goes it? I'll get to your coords after lunch if you're free now and then we can discuss.

She dangled a spicy noodle for the cub anyways and watched with mild amusement as it scarfed it down. It took a minute for the spice to kick in and the familiar sneezed. "Seeee? I said no for your own good." She shook her head and pulled out a tray of water from her inventory to tend to the cub.

Setting a place and a time was easy.   Freyd hadn't been back to the Town of Beginnings in a while and entertained himself with a long overdue visit with Marv.  It was the name with which he had dubbed the gate guard he'd befriended when he first worked up the nerve to step beyond the City's safe zone.  The man hadn't changed a bit.  No, seriously, Marv barely ever shifted his stance, never spoke, never looked anywhere but dead ahead.  His programming only allowed him to yawn once every minute or so.  He was the very picture of dedication.  Freyd was well aware of the ridiculous nature of these conversation, but they amused him nonetheless, and gave him an opportunity to voice theories out loud - especially when new players would walk by and wonder what he was doing.  Some exchanged glances, thinking him a madman.  A rarer few were agog that they had overlooked or even mistreated the guards in the past.

Today's topic was romance.  Freyd didn't understand a lick of it.  Marv, he was certain, was a god among mob women, though his advice revolved entirely around remaining as stiff as possible for as long as possible.

"I'm not sure that's going to work in every situation, bud."  Freyd took another sip of his black coffee - another crucial part of the ritual.  Haine was due to arrive any minute and their hour-long chat had gone round in a unidirectional circle without making much headway.  "We might have to shelve this one for another time, Marv."

Floor one it was.

Haine chased her last bite with some cold juice. She about chugged it like water to counter the heat of those peppers. With a satisfied sigh, she slammed the cup down on the counter. "Gaaah, I'm stuffed." She ushered the waiter over and held up her glass. "Refill, please?" She fanned her face. "I think I'm dying." The NPC, short of words, turned to face her and accepted the glass. The man in casual garb bowed and walked off. She frowned. Most NPCs were had to talk to. They had a few programmed responses and expressions but beyond that... basically a brick wall. She had a blast messing around in her beginning days.

A glass of juice later and she was ready to face the day.

Lo and behold, she arrived at the teleport gate. As per usual, the Town of Beginnings was swarming with players. She wandered around the entrance, scratching her head at the dot on her map. She was standing right over it on that map, but surely she wasn't standing over him. She glanced from side to side like a mad woman and spotted him hiding in the shade. Right next to him was a tall... terrifyingly tall guard, and Freyd was... talking to him? Haine approached the two and craned her head up at the NPC.

"I've never seen the guy move from this corner before."

"Hey Haine," Freyd replied casually.  He still wore the same outfit as the last time she'd seen him, complete with trademark dark cowl.  The latter was currently down around his shoulders, letting his mop of unruly, mousy brown hair waver gently in the breeze.  Something about his eyes seemed different, but she couldn't quite place a finger on it.

"This is Marv."  He pointed up to the guard, who still stoically ignore him.  The man was indeed titanic in build.  These NPCs were designed to convey the threat they posed to any hostile creature or PKer crazy enough to approach the City proper.  Freyd hadn't heard of any incidents in recent memory, but there were legends of spectacular chases and battles from the early days of the game.

"And no, he never moves - that I've seen - but it's nice to have a captive audience whenever you need to bounce ideas around."  Dismissing his cup and saucer with a casual gesture, he stopped leaning on the have stone battlements of the guard post and approached her.

"You look good, as always.  It seems like it's been a while.  What have you been up to?"

"Marv?" She put a finger to her chin and circled around the stone faced NPC. "He looks more like a Brutus." She waved in his face to test his patience. The guard simply cast her a downwards gaze,  grunted, and straightened his attention to nothing across the street. Her faithful cub, ever attached by her side, padded in front of her. The familiar sniffed at Freyd's shoes and then looked around in search of Percy. His voice rumbled in acknowledgement, whatever that sound is that a cub makes. Haine wouldn't know what to call that.

"I think she's looking for a buddy." Haine stayed close, just in case Mishka would try and butt into the other's personal space. She placed a hand on her hip and lingered off in thought. "Well lately, just grinding my way up there. It's getting rough in the middle. And you...-" The bluenette did a double take at Freyd's level above his cursor. "Jeez! How hard have you been grinding?" Her eyes widened. She admired that fire, grinding was brutal but she'd never witnessed such gain in little time. She preferred to go at turtle speed. "...How did you do it so fast?"

He couldn't help but chuckle at her comment about leveling.  Choosing to deflect the compliment.

"What are you talking about?  Kiluia was always faster at this sort of thing than I ever was.  There's another kid - Chase - who's recently attached himself to the guild as a consultant.  Actually, you two could be brother and sister, by the looks of your avatars at least.  He's skyrocketed up even faster than Kil did."  He just shrugged his shoulders at his own progress.  "My only trick is to keep things slowly and steadily moving along.  You know me - always plodding along, chasing some crazy mission or quest.  Like that Sundered Spire thing.  I'm still trying to piece a lot of that together."

As they spoke, a small tendril of tenebrous shadow twisted itself down the back of his left leg, circling it just above the boot then extending its nose outward toward Mishka.  A pair of brilliant and slotted azure eyes opened near the tip and gave the bear a playful lick on the nose.

"Why don't we walk and talk?  Elora and Katoka already have a bit of a head start on you.  We should try to wrap this up quickly so that you can join our hunt for the third dragon."

Kiluia is well... Kiluia. There was no way for Haine to describe his energy, his zeal to take hardships head on. She couldn't imagine losing almost all her hard work, having to build up from rock bottom. If she were in his shoes, she wouldn't be talking so big. She'd more than likely rage quit and spend the rest of her days stress eating with the fortune she piled up. Her mind wandered to ChaseR, she all but forgot about him and his insane growth. His aura was soft yet threatening simultaneously and she couldn't put a finger on it. "Yeah but still!" She cut in. "You all powered through that, takes some serious drive." She cleared her throat and gestured as she spoke.

Mishka, uninterested in these humans chit-chatting, searched around. A wispy shadow revealed itself as Percy and the cub's nub of a tail wiggled. He bopped the other with his moist snout and padded off, hoping the shadow would follow him out to play. He preferred kinder playmates, he was tired of that blubbery tyrant of penguin.

"Hmm, sure. Lead the way!" She trailed behind the cub and kept a watchful eye, lest he run off into the crowd. "Elora? Green haired lady, pointy ears at the festival right?" She tried her hardest to remember through foggy memory. She looked different in her festival attire, she didn't recognize her until she spoke. They'd gone on a quest or two as a group before. "She's adorable in a yukata," Haine gushed. All of Firm Anima's women, really. One glance at Kasumi and she was floored.

Freyd's laugh came from too deep in his chest to be just a casual response to her comments.  Haine had unexpectedly touched something with her comments about personal drive.  She couldn't know, of course, but that drive came at a price.  Freyd's personal toll had been growing for some time, and was gradually starting to wear.

"Elora? Green haired lady, pointy ears at the festival right?  She's adorable in a yukata."

"Yes," he replied pleasantly.  "She's the one.  You should tell her that when we meet up with them.  She's really appreciate it, coming from you.  Most of the ladies in the guild are envious of your appearance, those who concern themselves about such thing, at least."  Freyd was already picturing Elora's blush into the deep red range of the colour spectrum.  He hadn't even considered the impact of his words on Haine.  Surely she was aware of this already?

The dragon's hunting grounds were not far from the Town of Beginnings, and Freyd had already traveled there twice in as many days.  It didn't take them long to reach their destination.

"Pfft, sure." Haine waved her hand in dismissal. In the reality before, the woman had an eye for fashion, adorning herself with all the luxuries she afforded. It wasn't often that she could put down the sword and enjoy life's simplicity. Thrown into a world of grit and grime, she neglected her favorite pastimes, caught up in the grind. This seemingly infinite limbo was enough to mold her impressionable self. Tanabata was a breath of fresh air while it lasted. Seeing her comrades gathered without any agenda but to enjoy themselves - it was amazing.

"I'll just have to grab her for a quest one day, then!"

Idle chatter continued along the path to the dragon's hunting grounds. The city outskirts transitioned into lush plains, narrowing into a secluded path. She kept her guard relaxed. Nothing here would be of significant threat. A walk to warm her joints, if you will. A quick swipe at her HUD pinpointed a pulsing dot on the map, the location of the dragon's lair just a hair ahead of them. "Aww, poof. Already?" She sighed and materialized her spear. "Who gets dibs? Rock paper scissors?" She jested.

At Haine's jest, Freyd picked up a nearby stone about the size of a walnut, and tossed it into the air.  His dark blade manifested in his hand and he swung, slapping the rock he'd just tossed during its descent.   It sailed into some nearby trees where it produced a startled squawk and some rustling in the underbrush, followed suddenly by the emergence of a large angry reptile with a reddish bump on its head.  It charged toward Freyd, who simply stuck his weapon out towards it.  The blade hummed and whispered as it bent nearby shadows in towards itself, gathering power for his sword art.  The dragon was nearby upon him when Freyd switched his stance and sliced the dragon clean in half, like some sort of strange black matador.  Its form sprayed all over the area behind him, propelled by the beasts shattered momentum.  Many of the bits splattered all over Haine, covering her in disturbingly complimentary sparkles, many of them caught in her hair and reflecting the dazzling sunlight to give her an angelic quality.

"I've done this quest three times in the last week," he added softly, smiling.  "Besides... rock always wins."  A wry and playful wink followed.

"You'd better not let the other ladies see you like that.  Like I said.. jealous."

She anticipated with her hands on her hips. The other pelted a tree with a rock, rousing whatever was beyond these thickets out of its slumber. The ground beneath them shook, a telltale sign that the beast had awoken from its slumber. "Ooh, speak of the devil!" She hummed, in a sing-song tone. She stepped aside and surely enough, the dragon emerged from its lair. A dragon, emerald green, large in size yet posing no threat. Haine curled her bottom lip, moving to lean against a tree. "Not gonna lie, it's kinda cute-" her protest was cut short and she gaped. The man, with trained precision, sliced the pitiful foe into chunks. Less than a beat later, its synthetic remains materialized over her. A shower of crimson sparkles, like the thing was made of confetti. She outstretched a palm and captured a few.

She chuckled at Freyd's remark and flipped her hair over her shoulder.

"Fair enough."

The sparkles faded away and her quest marker updated. A strange looking stone popped up in her inventory, a pebble for keepsakes? She quirked a brow and examined the item in her panel. A key item. "So, this was a total snooze fest." She looked up at the other. "Keep me company for the second one, will you?" She pushed off the bark with her palms and dusted them. Off in the distance, the pudgy cub was convincing Perci for a game of hide and seek. He was half as nimble as the shadow, slamming into trees as gravity failed to keep him anchored.

"So, this was a total snooze fest." She looked up at the other. "Keep me company for the second one, will you?"

"Yeah, most of the chain appears to be like this, unfortunately." He nodded to Persi to run off and play with the cub.  She darted off into the woods, sleek and agile, yet playfully allowing the clumsier bear to nip at her, giving him a fighting chance.  How does she know how to do that so easily?  My damned familiar can sense moods better than I do.

"I've been letting Katoka and Elora get some practice in.  That fight against the Sundered Spire gave them both a taste for real battle, but they need to refine their skill.  Speaking of which, you took quite the hit from Skalaugh at one point.  You had me worried."  It was a true statement, though Freyd might have left out the part that his caring for her wellbeing hadn't manifested until well after the battle.  In the moment, he had been entirely focused on defeating the beast by any means necessary.   He doubted, now, that those particular details would benefit either of them by being shared.

"Nice, niiice."

"Speaking of which, you took quite the hit from Skalaugh at one point."

Everything else went out the other ear.

The mere mention of that situation imbued her with a sudden drive. She cleared her throat. "Uhh yeah, I did not like that." Haine seldom put herself in situations that severe. She wasn't officially a front liner, in fact a little cowardly despite the front she put up. She could strut with confidence if there was an inkling that she had the upper hand. Tossed into a situation like that out of left field, she was unprepared and disoriented. Skalaugh had done a number on her with just a single swipe. Were it not for a man named Oscar, it could have very well hurt her worse. A moment like that brought forth the reality that she had much more room to grow, physically and mentally. She was visibly uncomfortable at the memory of that. If she could ever grow strong, she would have to take herself more seriously.

The question posed to herself, what was she aiming for with all this drive?

"Yeah," she shook her head, bringing herself back to reality. "Yeah, that was... isn't going to happen again." She combed back her bangs and narrowed her eyes. "I've never faced an enemy that great before. If I'm ever going to make it up there," she continued, "I'll have to make sure I won't half-die first."

"Don't count yourself short.  I would have been in even worse shape."  It was true.  Despite his steady climb up the player ranks, Freyd was still an infant in the third tier, by front liner standards.  He still hadn't met all that many of them, though at least he'd had the chance to see them in action during that battle.

"I was reckless and fortunate not to have fared worse than I did."  There was neither pride nor humility behind his statement.  As always, Freyd simply took things as they were.  "You're one of the strongest players I have ever met in this world, Haine, and you don't have a chip on your shoulder about it."  He nodded to reinforce his admiration.  "That definitely counts for something."

Freyd verified that his quest objectives had been achieved, then suggested that they might slowly walk back towards town.  Their familiars would follow, and could have their play time, so long as their pace didn't exceed a stroll.

Skalaugh could have done a devastating number on any one of those there, the foe was just that great. She had just been the one to take the brunt of the hit. Beyond that, she witnessed Freyd and his colossal number on that dragon. In a fit of rage, his power was terrifying, a side of his strength that she seldom saw on these easier quests they would take. She had no doubt he'd be even greater as time passed.

Freyd's words touched her, gave her reassurance that she was on the right track. "Thanks." She smiled softly. "I really needed the pep talk." She folded her arms and twisted on her heels, in the direction back to town. "But gee, did you see yourself fighting the thing? That was frickin' cool!" She gesticulated, at a lack of words to describe what she was trying to say. "How'd you get ahold of that beefy sword?"

The duo of familiars led the way, play fighting. Persi was kind enough to give Mishka some semblance of victory, allowing him a nibble before she slithered away to taunt him. Haine's attention shifted to them. "These two are getting along well."

Holding Grief's Harbinger aloft, he watched as the soft white glow surrounding its void-like core danced and pulsed.  Nearly six feet long, it was said to have been forged in the likeness of the blade wielded by Repentence - the angelic mob and guardian of the Redemption quest.

"I found it on a grind thread.  Lucky drop, I guess.  My shop's been doing rather well, enabling me to get up to rank 5 mastery in my merchant skill.  It's still a rather fickle profession, as they all are, being dependent on the random number generator for goodies.  Still, it was a nice upgrade from the T1 blade I'd been using since I took on my first lessons quest."  Freyd chuckled at the memory, muttering something about 'bacon bits.'

"Feel free to drop by if you ever need anything identified.  You know I'll help you out as best I can.  I've also found oodles of sub-dungeons, if you ever want to tag along to get some of those done.  As to Skalaugh... I guess I was just making up for falling on my face again."  It was obvious that Freyd was dodging, which was telling because Freyd was never that obvious about anything.  His smile seemed to be fading but recovered as he watched their two 'kids' playing, agreeing with her assessment.

Haine whistled. "Neato. Spare me some of that luck!" she commented, glancing at the blade in all its glory. The group was nearing the town's entrance, it was about time for them to decide their next agendas. "Sure thing, I'll holler at you if I'm down." Come to think of it, she'd never been to his shop. "Where's your shop at, again?" She inquired. The mention of his shop brought something else to mind.

"Oh yeah, I'm considering a profession." She tapped her chin in thought. "I want to give back to guild, lend a hand somehow." The only option that piqued her interest was music, her favorite past time. She was a musically inclined soul, spent most of her life listening to music and piecing together her own tunes. The chances of her voice being heard here were higher than ever. She'd been so enveloped in the grind to consider other options.  "I have a recording studio, and well, I'd like to make use of it."

"Freyd Edges," he replied, when asked about the shop's location.  "It's in a monastery on the outskirts of Angel's Point.  Just look for Quip and Dingo, two players who help me look after the place, especially if I'm gallivanting with friends, slaying dragons, etc.  It's a nice place, if you disregard the fog miasma, which does a remarkably good job hiding the melting trees and shambling zombie hordes just outside the walls.  It's actually quite scenic"

Freyd listened attentively, dismissing the distraction of his sword, as she mentioned her desire to take up the performer profession.

"It would really suit you," he added, once she had finished.  "I hadn't realized that you hadn't picked up a trade yet.  If you had asked me which one I thought you had, it would definitely have been performer.  Did you just never get around to it?"  He shooed away his own question as irrelevant.  "Let me know when you set up shop.  I can guarantee you at least one steady customer.  I also offered free mats to starting crafters for the guild, a while back.  The offer still stands if you need it."

Holy shit.  I think we just had an actual normal conversation.  Haine likely wondered why he seemed so pleased with himself just for having a simple chat, like a normal human being.

"... Yeah, I'm gonna have to bring Kil for that one. Me and zombies do not get along." She cringed at the thought of creepy cavern floor. Creepy arachnids and flesh hungry undead were one of those rare things that left her in crippling fear, unable to move her blade. Her love was there to cover her butt so she wouldn't get herself killed. A monastery in the middle of all of that? Interesting.

She nodded along as Freyd spoke. "Thanks. I'll try my hand at some crafts and you'll be one of first my guinea pigs. How's that sound?" She shot the other a thumbs up and clasped her hands together. She could get that quest out of the way today, in fact. There was nothing stopping her here aside from her own procrastination. The day was young with the sun still bright, their conversation had fired her up for some hard work ahead.

They'd reached the teleport gate at last, Marv in his corner, ever faithful. She gave the broad framed man a nod of acknowledgement, to which he grunted. "Well, amigo," the bluenette started, turning to face Freyd. "It's been fun! I think I'm gonna get that profession right now. Dragon quest two will have to wait till later." She pivoted on her heels and waved over her shoulder.

"Till then!"
