[SP|F22] Searching for Something

Recommended Posts

It had been a fair while, but finally, everything was ready. Chase had prepared himself for this, and he knew all too well that his time was nigh. After a bit of research, he found out that the best floor he could head to in order to get himself some good loot and try to find the optimal weapon was the twenty second, just like Freyd had said. Monsters here appeared to be weaker, and if anything, there were plentiful of places to look for them in, as well. There was the forest, the lake, and everything was so wide and filled with monsters that seemed menacing just a few days ago. But now he wasn't the same as when he went to the Tanabata festival.

Now he was much stronger, backed up by the strength of this new coat and all the advice that NIGHT had given him. The items that he'd worked for and all the moves he had learned by now. It was time to put them to use and cut through any monster he found, in order to find it. He knew it had to be here, it was just a matter of finding it or failing. "And I won't fail. Especially with Blizz by my side.", he reassured himself and looked onto his shoulder where his pangolin stood, starting to make his way towards the forest with various types of monsters- beasts, astral type, reptiles, the list went on.

And like so, his search began. He started walking right into the forest to see what appeared like enraged deer, left and right. He kept out of their line of sight, trying to sneak by to get deeper into the forest. Avoiding confrontation like so was starting to get hard though. The monsters were taking notice no matter how close or far away he was and tried to cut him off, until eventually, they did. Stags, by the looks of it, and plenty of them too. It was a group of four, like most monster groups tended to travel.

"I can see there's little ways to go around them now... Fuck.", he noted mentally and began to slide his sword out of its sheathe, looking at the blade and reflecting on all the memories he'd made with it. How many battles he'd carved his way through with this unique blade that resembled Blizz' power oh so much, the enemies he'd frozen down with it, his accomplishment back against Terra Firma and his truly spectacular scaling of the cliff.

Not that any of those memories would just be trashed away as soon as he found it, if he even did however. He quickly put the blade he trusted so much after these plentiful adventures to work, slashing left and right. Three of his enemies he striked, and two he froze. The others, he continued to mercilessly attack- one of the previously frozen stags was even taken out before they could break free of their ice prison. It went to show the true, raw strength of his monstrous weapon.

He continued to hack and slash at them, missing only one of the four that he'd frozen with his previous attack. If anything, he was quite surprised that it managed to get a hit in for itself too, lowering Chase's health barely, but putting up more of a fight than the rest. Then again, it was a matter of luck- the thing was completely outraged and probably not even thinking clearly. In the end though, monsters ran on programs. They didn't think.

They just acted based on whatever commands they had to work off of and that was fine. After all, this was all the 'thinking' they needed to do in the world that they lived in from start. Chase was the intruder, the one that was born outside and barged into Aincrad. They owed him nothing, as long as he didn't earn it. And that's what he was here to do. Somewhere among the monsters, the ultimate blade existed for him. One that would let him damage most enemies, cut through all the competition and make his way to the top. That very blade was packed with two deadly enchantments. A perfect sword that carried both Holy in two slots and a single slot of Phase- a literal godslayer. A single critical would be enough to bring down the roof on the most deadly of monsters, raising his numbers to their maximum potential.

The prospect of Chase getting his hands on that powerful a blade, one that would allow him to storm through most of the floors the castle had to offer and cut his way all the way to the hundredth with as many people as he could protect behind him, was enough to guide him here. He cut down the final stag of the group and prepared to move on, only for the next to appear. They wouldn't do much to stop him though, at least successfully. He braced himself for another battle and took a deep breath, stretching his neck before jumping forwards and delivering another wide blow. More enraged stags, and by the look of it, most animals that served as monsters around these parts were angered. It wasn't at Chase, they seemed to have this rage from before he even came into sight. Something more sinister must have been going on.

Of course, he was fine with that too. If he could both kill monsters to look amongst the hoops of unidentified items and get the sword he wanted so much all the same, all the while protecting a forest from some menace that lurked deeper inside, that was the perfect silver lining. A great training ground and another issue to solve, to make sure that no 'Vanguard' issues would come up out of nowhere again. If anything, he knew that nobody wanted the Sundered Spire to assault Aincrad once more.

The way they'd just barged in- no, come back for what was, at one time theirs, assaulted the floors and even destroyed the landscape temporarily to kill the players and massacre everything in sight out of pure spite and hatred... Tch. Another slash while he thought all these through, and three more monsters went down. This was going perfectly so far.

And like so, one monster was left again. Nothing would stay between Chase and the perfect weapon, and he was here to drill that through them. He used another weak sword art and wiped the monster out, grinning as he stretched his hand and continued on deeper into the forest. Right now, it seemed like he had a few minutes to rest from the monsters running at him one after the other. None seemed to be nearby and now he could finally just catch a small break and think things through.

For a start, the intel that Freyd had provided him with was spot-on. The monsters were definitely easier to kill, falling at a mere two strikes from his blade despite how high the floor was. For whatever reason, this floor was indeed with much weaker monsters than usual- something he could now take advantage of, as he was no longer level twenty-seven and here to celebrate.

While travelling deeper into the forest, he could see the lighting getting dimmer and the foliage denser. If he somehow ended up getting lost in the forest and found himself unable to search for a path out, he'd always resort to the teleport crystal that lead him back to his home floor. For now though, he was perfectly fine where he was going. It was a straight back out, and whatever the case, he still had the map data he'd recorded of the floor at the ready with a simple swipe of his fingers.

Strolling through, he saw a material down on the ground and picked it up. It didn't matter whether he could use it for his artisan creations or not. It was a material to pay Simmone and the rest of the crafters in, should he need anything, and that's ultimately all that mattered to him right now.

Blizz stayed on his shoulder throughout, quiet and curled into a ball with a tight grip regardless. The way his companion saw everything, it was a leisurely walk into the woods right now. The air wasn't too cold, and it wasn't too hot either. While not the pangolin's optimal, he could certainly go along with the notion that this was a change from the standard and stick to it. After all, it wasn't every single day that he got to go out with Chase and enjoy an adventure.

Right now, his owner was onto picking up another material off the ground and stashing it with his inventory alongside the myriads of items he'd already gotten, even out of a mere eight monsters. And further in the distance he could see more figures- some with red eyes, some others moving around and the rest trying to go about their day without being an issue neither to the explorer nor the rest of the monsters.

And then they were back to being surrounded by monsters in almost no time. If the previous enemies they had to face were stags, these were definitely the female counterparts- does. Maybe they were enraged for the same reason as the stags were, maybe they just wanted payback for what had happened to their kind and possible mates. Hell if Chase knew- what he saw in front of him right now though was more monsters that no matter what, would definitely not listen to any reason whatsoever.

And those monsters were probably best out of the way, so they wouldn't pose a threat to any NPCs approaching the outskirts of the forest, or weaker players that happened to waltz this deep into the woods. A graceful attack and all four were wounded, but neither managed to land a hit on Chase in return. "Despite how enraged they are, they can't seem to get a good hit on me no matter what."

No matter how blinded by rage they could appear to be, he knew that these monsters were accurate. The red glimmer in their eyes might signal their fury, but what it warned the most was the potential danger they'd pose for the boy. These monsters were much more accurate with the attacks than they let on, and he was well aware by now. He'd faced tons of field bosses and monsters to pick up on just how deceiving looks could be. A small monster could be much more dangerous than a large one, and vice versa. Appearances were appearances and stats were nothing more than the hidden truth when it came to everybody in this world. He finished off the three of the four monsters, dismissing the loot window and getting to the final one whose attack missed again. Nothing to really surprise the blueberry by now, but something to be wary about.

Thankfully, the monsters one could loot did not seem to be packed with skills, especially when they were met outside of quests. And seeing as the trip wasn't a quest, no flags had been triggered whatsoever, there was thankfully little worry to be had with these monsters. Another slash and just like that, Blizz yawned once more at the sight of his owner looting another monster and then getting a move on.

"The monsters here aren't strong enough to bring me down. I hope you don't feel on edge any, Blizz.", Chase talked to his familiar only to receive a croak in response, taking that response as him saying 'No, not really'. It was a shame that they couldn't talk too much, or that he was too worried for his familiar to keep taking him out on trips out into the fields for quests when he began to grind through them alongside NIGHT.

Who would have thought that right after the previous group of Does, another one just as aggressive would chime in and try to fill in the blanks from their deaths- oh well. Just another group of targets to clear. Despite their best attacks, they missed over and over, and over, and for the fourth one, over again. "... They are not blinded by rage, but... something is upsetting them. What..?", he grumbled and looked further inside the forest, taking a deep breath and turning his attention back to them.

Even if they weren't fully blinded by rage, they were definitely mad about something. He couldn't ignore them and flee, nor could he calm them down in any way. Sadly, he had to slice and dice them all the same- and that he began to do right off the bat. With a simple sweep, three of the four got hit, and two among the three frozen to the ground.

Another sweep and this time, he landed a hit on all four. The first was hit right across its side, the second's legs were practically cut both, the third's head and the fourth's back. Ultimately, the same two from before fell first, and shortly after came the third he had hit. Now only one was left, which seemed desperate to get an attack in. Despite all of its efforts though, it failed again and again, charging at him. What could be causing these animals to just go wild?

Something had to be disturbing them inside of the forest, and the idea was simply intriguing enough. Even if he wasn't here to get the sword, or at least try to find it based on his own theory crafting, he was now here to solve this mystery and see what is really at play with the monsters that lurked around these parts.

Because worst of all, he was still relatively 'shallow' in terms of how far inside the forest he'd delved. He'd find it though, so there was little reason to worry. Whatever was putting all the monsters at such unease, he'd find, slice and dice it and then be done with it so they can calm down from this offputting outrage they'd been driven into. Another quick slash and finally, the eighth doe he'd met on his way had fallen. He looked through the loot window, simply smiling and letting Blizz peek as well.

The familiar croaked in... whatever emotion it currently felt. No way that Chase could read through pangolins of all creatures and the ways they expressed themselves. With his energy having run low, he decided to take it easy and try to avoid monsters for now, just like before. That way, he'd regenerate and find some materials along the path too.

The stroll was somewhat calm. He walked through, relatively careless and Blizz even more so. He jumped down onto the ground and began to walk deeper inside ahead of him, finding something and picking it up with his tongue before offering it to Chase. An offer that honestly, he appreciated more than anything. Accepting it, he put it in his inventory and threw both hands behind his head, humming lowly to not attract any monsters from around the area.

"I'm getting the feeling I'll have lots of unidentified items once I'm out of here, so it would probably be for the best if I gave them all to Freyd for that sweet, sweet discount he'd told me back in the Colosseum. I wonder if he can fetch me anything better than gran could. Speaking of which... Does gran still feel annoyed with me or has she calmed down any?". Pondering as per usual, he kept to his thoughtful self while out of combat.

It was better to keep a clear head in combat, while out of it he could be as much of a troubled teenager as he wanted to. Although, he entered Ainrad when he was eighteen... Meaning that however long had passed, he was well into young adulthood by now. "I wonder how old I am... A week has passed since I began to level up, and I've already reached Tier 3. Now, I was at the inn for... Looking at my funds, it must have been around 10 Col per day, and I started at two and a half thousand, I think... How much is that?"

And so, he got down to doing the numbers in his head. He wasn't quite sure. "... Did I live too lavishly in comparison to my first months or something? I could have sworn we started with ten thousand Col, and I never spent that many days crying in the... Fuck, maybe I'll have to do this with pen and paper... Or keyboards or whatever.", he nodded to himself while Blizz retrieved another material for him.

He accepted the gift from his pangolin and took him back onto his shoulder, hearing beasts further up ahead. And when they were close enough, he read the unfamiliar name that they seemed to have- a fantastic creature, as in not a real one. 'Tuskhorn'... They were like boars, except with a single horn at the very top of their snout, and much angrier. On top, their fur was scruffy and hard like wire, and they didn't seem happy to see him either.

Quickly, they all charged in. Two hit him, while the others missed. And of the four, Chase himself managed to hit two more with Blizz slamming one using his tail to capitalize on the free attack that they got to land. He quickly stepped back, letting his battle healing and holy blessing take over and put him out of a rough spot, wanting to keep his health as high as possible for any fight out here.

Even if it came down to the absolute worst though, he still had that Teleport Crystal that NIGHT had given him. He just had to calm down a moment. And that's exactly what he did. With his health slightly regenerated, he took a deep breath and stretched his neck, wanting to feel his muscles relaxing. The moment the four charged in again he began to dance around them, swirling and circling them with his blade gracefully spinning and twirling in his hands.

Slashes, cuts and gashes formed in the air and over the monsters, red pixels flying into the distance. By the time he was done and whipped his sword to the side, the two struck before had fallen and only two more were left behind. "... Even if I'm a 'grandmaster' rank with my sword, it's only more practice for me to fight until I get the best feel possible for the blade. Don't you think, Blizz?"

And of course, he couldn't understand anything his familiar said to him. He was croaking all the time, for pete's sake. Thankfully, Chase didn't expect to really tell much from his pangolin's attempts at communicating. They both did what they knew best, even if the monsters, his own familiar and even he himself at times didn't understand why he talked. The former two never understood what he said, or at least the monsters never did. Blizz did seem to pick up a few tidbits here and there.

What he did definitely understand, was the gesture that Chase made. He lifted the blade back in front of him, and Blizz began to breathe cold air down onto its side, only to sharpen it temporarily with a thin layer of ice all over the packed ice that formed the blade. As they shattered, the loot window appeared again with a fair bit of good loot- nothing unwelcome to him. "Now we're talking... Give me more perfects, c'mon.", he chuckled to himself and closed it, looking ahead.
