This time, it was about some inn up in the thirteenth. Slowly moving up the floors, sure. Chase could go with it, nothing wrong with moving up. That did mean the monsters would be tougher moving onwards, but still not tough enough for the bluehead. As soon as he stepped in, he didn't have but a moment to realise that Ali, Cassin and some other new girl were there. Almost instantly, Ali's voice rang out as he shouted, drunken as per usual... "Slander! Brother, the damn thieves are lying through their teeth!", he added and slammed his mug on the table, before turning to Cassin. The both of them seemed like a complete mess, and the only one that was still normal, whatever that could be or look like, was Morgiana, the redhead alongside them. "Aah, ChaseR! Come on over, sit down with us... There's another job I want you to take care of for me, young lad!", Ali called out to the bluehead which made him cringe slightly, but... How come alcohol even existed in Aincrad, Chase was certain it had been completely disallowed from Kayaba himself. How could he even be drunk?! He let his eyes scan the redhead's body, noticing she was quite muscular for a girl her size and if anything, beautiful too. That's not what he was here for though. He turned to the brothers with furrowed brows, curious what was up this time. What did it matter if the bandits lied about them this time? "Yeah? What's the issue?", he asked before getting a weird look from Ali once more. "You heard me, didn't you?! The thieves, they're lying about us! They're just slandering us, ruining our reputation and trying to get us kicked out of the town, all of our efforts thrown aside!", he continued, getting a look in disbelief from Chase. "Well... if they weren't drinking all day long, that might have helped them any...", he cynically thought to himself before Ali introduced his friend. "This is Morgiana, ChaseR. Please, take care of the bandits once more... They're a persistent bunch that won't stop until they do, but... Please, take care of them and make them stop lying about us! I'm begging you!", he almost burst into tears and lowered his head, getting an even more confused look from Chase. "Ali, I will, calm down... Uh... Morgiana? "Er... Ali? Please try to lay off the drinks until we're back, alright? We won't take more than two hours, probably. Okay?", he said with a small frown on his lips, getting a sob and nod from the older man. "... Fine, I'll try... But no promises, the bandits have already ruined me enough...". For crying out loud, he had so much charm and personality to himself in the previous two quests, what the hell was up with him this time? He just cried and whined about thieves this and bandits that, couldn't he lay back for a moment? Then again, he was a quest NPC so... The only best way to know is to ask Morgiana, of course. "... Was he always this way?", Chase posed the question while the duo exited the tavern, stretching when they got outside and yawning. "... Since much too long ago, yes.", she replied in a disappointing fashion. It seemed Chase had just gotten him in a good day if that was the case... sigh. They were patrolling around, seemingly waiting for Ali and Cassin to come out of the safezone's confines while spreading their lies all the same. "At first I didn't think this was that big of an issue but you lot surely hold a grudge...", Chase mumbled, sliding his weapon out of its scabbard and pointing the broken blade their way, furrowing his brows and looking at Morgiana, who clenched her fists and prepared to attack with her gauntlets. As soon as the fight began though, Chase's weapon emitted the usual white, bright flash, blinding most of them- Morgiana included. Although every bandit got hit, it seems like none was felled quite yet. So they had gotten tougher after all! "Now I see why Ali let you fight on your own the last times...", the girl threw a coldhearted comment right at Chase, getting an awkward sigh out of him. He just awkwardly scratched the back of his head and looked away, leaving enough room for the thieves to start running right at the duo. "Well... It's not something I do though. The sword does it on its own.", he complained, although it was mostly directed at his blade rather than anything else. "I see. Try not to do it again then.", Morgiana dismissed almost instantly, getting even the boy to cock an eyebrow. Had he finally found somebody that much more inept than himself when it came to communication? This was impossible. With the thieves going head on at them, Chase tried to twirl on his right foot's heel, slashing at all four but only landing a hit on two. Those two went down, while with a powerful kick, Morgiana took another one out. That only left one of the fools at low health to run right up to Chase and retaliate with a sword art of his own, surprising the man although in a positive way. "So you can use sword arts too? With another almost casual slash before the bandit could distance himself, he was split in half and shattering into beautiful triangles of blue. With that though, he seemed to have gotten Morgiana's attention. "... What is it?", he asked the redhead who crossed her arms and huffed, stepping towards him. "I was suspicious of you. I thought you could have lied or taken advantage of Ali.", she began, only to get a small frown out of Chase. "... I don't do anything out of self-interest. More combat experience means I grow stronger. I already have the gear I want, and I'd benefit nothing from stealing from this world.", he tried to explain his position, even if it sounded almost like he had considered stealing from the poor man. Somehow though, his companion seemed to know that's not the case. "You didn't even consider stealing from him, you just gave the mask right away." He hadn't remembered anybody with her physique around in the tavern either, so there was no way... Kayaba was probably just messing with him, but... so be it. She seemed to have her own intelligence and emotions. "That's true, but... I'm surprised you know.", he grumbled and looked to the side, only to feel her hand right on his shoulder, his eyes widening as he looked at her with a confused glance. She was... smiling? "I can tell. You never gave me the impression that you would steal, plus... I can just tell. You don't strike me as off. You're reliable.". While this wasn't anything new for him to hear and it wasn't particularly moving, it was definitely surprising that he heard it from an NPC. He just smiled in return, looking at her and huffing. "... I see. I'm glad you think of me that way. It's rare, in here.", he said, knowing fully well that Morgiana was probably unaware he was trapped in here and not another one of Cardinal's creations... probably. How they got there was completely curious, but the path just ended off to the side of some cliff... Chase knew that he had seen something like this in a movie, but he wasn't sure where. Before he could even utter a catchphrase as he reached out to the mountainside, he felt something from below them. "What th-", he was abruptly interrupted by Morgiana who pulled him back and tossed him further behind, before jumping to follow right up. "Get back! It's the cave's guardian!", she shouted instinctively, holding her fists up. While the bluehead was getting up though, all that he knew was that holy shit, she was very strong given her figure. "That's an ugly bastard, ugh... What's up with all these monsters Ali is after?!", he asked Morgiana to receive nothing but a confused glance before the beast screeched out, getting an annoyed look by Chase. "The last monster was a manticore... Seen one before? That's what it was called at least, it had uh...", he tried to casually explain, but the redhead just dove right in. With all of the ruckus it was causing, Chase and Morgiana couldn't get close to it due to the ground still shaking somewhat, but the monster itself barely even managed to move at all from its spot. And before they even had enough time to get going again, Chase had almost tripped on one of the rocks that had been surfaced over to the ground, barely stopping himself and dusting his leggings. In the meantime though, Morgiana went all out and kicked the scorpion's face in, wincing somewhat and jumping back next to the boy once the scorpion missed its own attack at her. She seemed to have noticed something rather unsavory, and that she'd rather not have found out herself, if at all. "The monster's shell is coated with some poison... ChaseR 0 Posted November 20, 2020 Author #10 Report Share Posted November 20, 2020 (edited) Before Morgiana was finished warning Chase, the monster began spinning uncontrollably and struck the both of them with poison once more- it appeared as though when it emerged from the ground, it already managed to poison Chase, as well as Morgiana despite how quick her reflexes were. At this rate, Chase was only having issue with one thing. His own health was doing fairly well, but the biggest issue was Morgiana. Not because she was incompetent, but because her health was starting to drop dangerously low, especially since all of the poisons just stacked on and on like there was no tomorrow. That was going to become a big problem the longer the fight dragged on, and so, they had to put an end to it. Another kick from Morgiana that sadly affected her with more poison, and a slash from Chase, and the beast's health was already beginning to drop a fair bit. He quickly began to charge straight at the scorpion, who did his best to bring his tail forward and jab right at his head, but its plan unspectacularly enough failed. Chase's blade had run right through the monster's head, the blade of light having revealed itself to Morgiana as the flash wasn't bright enough to blind her this time. Even if Chase was soaked with a little bit more poison, it was nothing that he couldn't handle either. He turned to look at Morgiana, who seemed to be smiling just slightly at the sudden rescue by the boy's weapon. "The poison should wear off before too long. Let's wait on it and get in the cave afterwards, alright? I didn't want to risk your life any more when I noticed how strong it was. Sorry for taking it easy at the start." "It's alright. You're much stronger than me in the first place, so it made sense you didn't feel as scared. I knew you wouldn't let me down though." Although he expected to be scolded at first, Chase was glad to have been proven wrong by Kayaba once again. Not everything in this game was bad. This gave him very mixed feelings overall, some things were made almost out of spite while others, like NPCs of Morgiana's kind, seemed to be perfectly fine and cool. She had no issues with Chase, or anybody else that was honest. She judged character and just took it easy, relying on the player. In a very natural and not forceful way, too. "Heh. Thanks. I... don't hear that too often. So it feels very good to hear.", he awkwardly blurted out and lifted his head to look up at the sky when he sat down too, staying quiet as a soft breeze blew. He furrowed his brows and looked at her, putting a hand on her shoulder and just giving a hopeful smile. "Hang in there for a moment more, it's almost over. Does it hurt a lot?" "N-No, I can handle it. This is nothing. It was all for Ali's good, after all. We saved his reputation, so even if I died, it'd have been worth it.". Those words did kind of sadden Chase. It wasn't so rare for him to see people that wished for death or said they didn't mind it anymore, just slumping back against the rock again and looking at the sky with squinted eyes. "You and Ma both say you wish you... n-no, you wouldn't mind dying. Doesn't life mean... something? To you. I don't think I'd ever be able to throw my life away for even something I love. If I'm not there to cherish it, it's... pointless. I'll cause so much grief and sadness to others.", he began to ramble quietly, getting an intrigued look from Morgiana. After two minutes or so, he shook his head and just curled his knees up to his chest, continuing the stargazing. "No... I call her Ma cause her name is Mari. But... she feels like my real mom, too. Maybe more affectionate at times." "... What happened to your real mom, if I may?", the redhead asked, starting to worry that his real parents had died apparently. There was no way for him to reveal about not being from here to her, so... "Ah... They're... I can't talk to them. I have to reach the hundredth floor first. They're waiting for me there.", he almost childishly tried to explain, smiling slightly and huffing. "I see... Mine are dead. Long gone, too. Ali and Cassin are the only family I have left.", Morgiana began to explain her own situation, getting a small frown from the boy. "There's not a lot for me to fight for, you know. I only want Ali and Cassin to be happy. If that's how it is, then I can be happy too. Dead or not." She wasn't sure how to respond. Be it because she really couldn't find an answer or because she was hesitant to be honest with him, Chase just let out a sigh and looked back up at the sky. "You and Ma are the same. If being cared for by you means dying, I'll keep running ahead faster than you can keep up. That way, you'll never be in danger yourselves. As humble as a sacrifice might seem, it's... don't die. I'm trying to say, don't die. Ali and Cassin want you as their friend. Don't die and disappear like everybody else in this world.", he almost asked of Morgiana, in a voice sincerely filled with worry. "... You're a good person, ChaseR.", she said with a small smile, before getting up on her feet and stretching to get ready for the discovery. "Your mind didn't change any, I knew it. You never change.", he said and chuckled, only to get a small grin in return from Morgiana. Mari was the same way. No matter how much he pushed, she wouldn't see that two wrongs don't make a right. Even if Mari had much more serious reasons to pursue the fate she did- lying to everyone to make them feel better at the cost of her own happiness. Maybe it wasn't even Chase's business to butt into, at all. "Think we're ready to go in and see what's by the mountainside the scorpion stopped me from touching?" Chase quickly got onto his feet and followed right behind her, stopping next to her before the mountain and scratching the back of his head before he raised his other hand out to touch the side. To his surprise, his hand sank in as it began to fade- an illusion, it seems. The side of the mountain was partially fake, as a hole appeared in the wall, revealing a cave with nothing but treasure inside. Two lit torches by the side and then a whole lot of gold reflecting all the light from the flames out of the cave and towards the duo. Chase turned to look at Morgiana, who looked with similar disbelief and quietly stepped into the cave alongside the bluehead. "You're telling me that... this is what Ali was after all of this time..? W-Wait, no, he already knew that this was here, from when I helped him rescue Cassin..!". Link to post Share on other sites

He thought that they had been sent in order to take down the lying bandits... Wait..! And now that Chase had figured exactly why they were sent there, he began to hear footsteps approaching from behind them. He quickly reached for his sword's handle, only to turn around and see it was Ali and Cassin walking right beside him. "Ali...", he muttered under his own breath and let go of his sword, putting both of his hands in his jacket's pockets as he got a clap and nod from the siblings. "That's right. Now you've found it too; the cave of treasures! Judging by the fact there's no bandits left, and no guardian for the cave, you made it!" Link to post Share on other sites

The very same cave Ali seemed to have only a little gold out of, which meant he probably... hadn't beaten the guardian. Morgiana's look hardened somewhat too, but... there was another ulterior motive to this, wasn't there? "I see now. You wanted us to find the cave of treasure so your reputation would still stand. Since now, we two know it exists because we found it on our own...", he said and looked back at all of the gold laid out before them, before Ali clapped once more. "That's exactly it! And now, I'm certain more than ever before that I can call you two friends, given how much you went through to defend my name and how brave warriors you both are!", he tried to congratulate them, but the both of them were unmoved by his flattery. What didn't sit well with Chase, was that this meant the quest giver hadn't been able to enter the cave on his own. Link to post Share on other sites

Ali, needless to say, seemed to head right towards it, as eager to get his hands on it as ever. "And you even found it on your own, when all I'd tasked you with was taking care of the bandits; now people definitely know I'm not a liar. You saved me, again!" "The real reason you sent the two of us out here isn't your reputation though.", he huffed and looked to the side, as Morgiana finally understood where the blue boy was getting to. "Don't tell me it's because you couldn't get past the Cave Guardian, Ali...", she said in disbelief, receiving no answer. Well, not immediately. The man simply turned around after a short while, flashing her a smile and offering ChaseR a handful of Col. "That's not it, Morgiana! I'd never use the two of you, you just happened to find the cave and the guardian was still there. The bandits could have killed it, too!". It looked like Chase's job here was done though. Before he could leave, Morgiana stopped him to hand a potion over. "For keeping my alive. Thank you ChaseR. If we need anything else, I'll tell you. For now, I have to talk with Ali...", she grumbled and got a nod and small grin from Chase, before he began to head right off with the quest's details before him.
