[SP-F3] Hunting BAMs in the prairie

Recommended Posts

It had taken Baldur a while to understand why he didn't ever come to the 3rd floor. It seemed like it would be everything he would want in a floor, even the European motif was right up his alley. The main village, Delilah, was surrounded by a field of dandelions, but that was too easy, so Baldur had teleported to Flora, a medium size town that was a ways out on the floor. Most of the mobs on this floor were elven, maybe that played into it. Mobs that could use weapons were far more dangerous, since they could use sword skills just like players, and they even had some that players themselves could not get.

As he left the safety field of the town, he approached the near by wooded area. That's where he would find anything interesting on this floor. It wasn't quite the Forest of Wavering Mist dungeon, but it would do.

Walking slowly into the forest, Baldur placed his hand on the handle of his katana and kept his eyes peeled for mobs that would be lurking around in the brush down here. Suddenly, a bit of movement and a flash of light caught his eye as a dagger struck him powerfully in the chest. Letting out a grunt, Baldur didn't even spare a glance for his HP as he <<Charged>> the <<Elven Ambusher>> as it dropped out of a hunting blind set up in a tree.

Baldur's red sword blazed with a blue light as the two of them streaked through the air. Immediately upon landing his blow struck the elf with a power Baldur had never been able to unleash before. The concussive force of his charge blew the elf back into another tree where it hit with a sickening crack and then slumped to the floor, momentarily dazed but not stunned.

Baldur smiled at his handwork. He had taken damage from the ambush, but between his Battle-Healing and his new life-steal, he had already healed it back up. He did need to increase his armor skill though in order to keep him safe. He needed at least another rank in it to keep the edge off of those critical hits, but his roll was DPS, not tank, so he had to figure out if another rank in armor was more important than saving up for another rank in his Katana skill. Rushing forward, Baldur tried to close in and finish the mob off, but another mob came leaping down out of the tree. Rather than wielding daggers which could be fought with or thrown, this <<Elven Hunter>> wielded a two-handed spear.

Driving the spear into his shoulder with all the force of jumping off the tree and slamming him into the ground interrupted Baldur's attack and knocked out a few of the HP he was so proud of regening.

Maybe I should put more points into Battle-Healing...

His gallows humor didn't amuse himself.

As the Hunter pulled the spear back and out of his shoulder to hit him again, Baldur quickly rolled out of the way and batted the spear to the side with his Katana. The Ambusher was trying to rise, but it's HP bar was flickering and Baldur was mentally crossing his fingers that the bleed damage would finish it off. Pivoting slightly so he could try to keep an eye on both of them, he accidentally left himself open for the longer range of the two-handed spear and the Elf caught him in the leg, dropping Baldur to a knee.

Just as his knee hit the ground, the <<Ambusher>> exploded into polygons and Baldur pushed himself to his feet rushing forward and driving his Katana into the gut of the <<Elven Hunter>>, throwing it back and watching his HP tick back up again for the amount that the mob hit him for.

Yea. That extra mitigation would probably put me at full HP right now.

With his sword still buried in the <<Elven Hunter>> Baldur kept pushing forward until both of them hit another tree. Being this close meant that the hunter couldn't bring his two-handed spear around to bear on Baldur. It was a great weapon, but being in close like this without another ally left the mob at a disadvantage against him. Putting his boot up and onto the chest of the hunter, Baldur pulled his sword out and then spun in a single motion, the blade spinning around him in a full circle and then cleaving the head off of the elf. A heartbeat later and the creature disappeared in a rising shower of rainbow colored polygons.

"Awww... and look, both the elves left me presents!"

Baldur smiled as he saw the battle summary window pop up, showing him how much Col, XP, and what loot he got from the fight. It wasn't a bad haul, especially since his lifesteal had filled his hitpoints back up to full.

"I think I could get used to this!"

When another glint of light flashed in Baldur's vision, he was ready for it. He tried to jump to the side, but apparently he wasn't as good at dodging bullets as he had hoped. The thrown dagger hit him, but this time it just glanced off of his armor, leaving only a shallow red, wire mesh gash in his arm. Baldur watched as the ambusher dropped out of the tree. He couldn't see where the Hunter was, since now he was assuming they came in pairs. They were much more effect that way.

Except for when Baldur <<charged>> and struck the mob just as hard as he had the first time, his blow almost completely dropping the mob's health in a single blow, and the small blood drop icon appeared next to the now red health bar showing that his bleed effect had kicked in.

"Where's your friend?" Baldur taunted the mob, trying to keep his eyes out for the second ambush attack.

The mob hissed out something in what sounded like a made up Elven language. How would Elven sound in Japanese? He had never considered that before, and it the train of thought would give him a headache if he followed it for too long.

The dagger wielding ambusher lunged forward and slashed at him with its dagger, catching him on the forearm, but Baldur merely stepped forward and slashed the <<Elven Ambusher>> in half, his blade stopping when it struck the tree which was an <<Immortal Object>> of the world.

Taking a step back from the tree, Baldur waited for the Hunter to leap out at him, but none ever did, and the combat complete window finally popped up, showing him his rewards for defeating the mob.

"Not bad at all. I can always use more Col and mats."

When no hunter ever came, Baldur continued further into the forest. He wasn't here to fight the elves, he was here to find something that would drop him some nice loot. He had heard that there were some tough elves on the floor, but he wanted to find one of the rare mobs. He had heard from a reliable information broker that within this part of the floor some <<Wyverns>> lived in the forest and were not part of the Elven faction. Hopefully that meant that there wouldn't be any adds in the fight. Baldur hated BAF mobs, and they were always the most dangerous whenever you were out soloing.

"Come on, where's a Wyvern when you need one?"

He wandered through the forest, and when he saw a patrol of Elves he steered clear of them. Eventually, Baldur started to see what he felt like was a perimeter to their 'territory' of where they spawned. Hopefully that meant if he went in the other direction, he would encounter a Wyvern.

Bingo.

The Wyvern seemed to be alone. It's golden scales reflecting the light of the forest. It wasn't so dense here like it was in the <<Forest of Wandering Mist>> which meant that the light gave him ample vision, and the trees themselves allowed for easy fighting since they weren't set up like a maze. The Wyvern itself seemed to float around a particularly large larch tree, with some nice shrubbery built up around it. It would have looked really nice with a little fence and maybe a bridge running through the middle of it.

But those thoughts were neither here nor there.

Crouching down into his <<charge>> position, Baldur held his hand at the ready.

"Nukitsuke." He whispered softly with a smile on his face as he let the sword skill explode through his body, rocketing him forward as he drew the sword and slashed powerfully into the <<Wyvern>>, knocking it back, but this beast was a flier, and it recovered far faster than Baldur did, it's own barbed tail lashing out and cutting the side of his face.

"Ack!" Baldur cried out as he gripped his katana in both hands and turned to face the beast.

Baldur cursed at the winged beast as they faced off against one another. The golden scaled flying serpent had wicked claws at least as long as dinner knives and a dozen times more wicked looking, as well as a jagged, fishing hook like barb at the end of it's tail. Within it's draconic snout were row upon row of teeth to make a shark feel self-conscious. It looked like it wanted to take a bite out of him, and indeed it tried to as it dove out of the air. It's claws raked at Baldur, but he was able to parry the attack and keep its snapping jaws at bay as it tried to over-power him. Without missing a beat, Baldur saw the sharp, weaponized tail strike out at him like an upside-down scorpion but Baldur was able to side-step it just in time.

"You're not getting me that easily!"

He forced the creature back, since he was on the ground he had more leverage he could use to bully the creature about the field of battle as long as it wasn't dive-bombing him.

"Eat steel and die!" Baldur roared as he struck at the mob, but it was able to parry his slash with its prehensile tail. The fact that his sword didn't just slice the tail off like it should have bothered him.

Baldur and the Wyvern squared off with one another, a flurry of steel blows and lightning quick slashes with the claw. Neither one of them could seem to land a solid hit, but each were able to get several glancing blows, whittling away at the other's HP. Thankfully, Baldur still out leveled this creature and a glancing blow from Tsurugi meant quite a bit more than the damage the mob was able to get through his armor.

Come on battle-healing, come on life-steal!

Baldur cursed them under his breath for not activating, even though the bleed was trucking away and adding a substantial amount of damage to the fight. He hadn't quite expected it to do as much good as it did, but it certainly helped at times like this when the mob was being frustratingly good at defending itself.

There!

Baldur cried out as he saw an opening and slashed down at the thick of the tail, a roar of pain emanating from the mob as he sliced its tail clean off.

"Haha!" Baldur cried out triumphantly.

With its tail gone, the <<Wyvern>> seemed to go into a berserk mood. It's wings began to beat like something he'd expect from a humming bird, and a wicked glint appeared in it's red, soulless eyes.

"Come and get some, you filthy mob!" Baldur taunted it. With a roar the mob dove at Baldur head first. Instinctively, Baldur raised his sword to parry a blow, but the creature bit Baldur's sword and held it still while it's claws raked at him from either side. Baldur was able block one side with a forearm, but other side raked the side of his face in what would have been really awesome looking scars. That wouldn't work for him though, Odin was the one called 'One-Eye' not Baldur.

Throwing the beast back gain, Baldur found that it was floating out of reach of him.

"Come down here and fight me like a man, you pansy! Don't make me bite my thumb at you!"

When the <<Wyvern>> tried to dive bomb Baldur again, rather than try to parry the bite, he rushed forward, ducking under where the creature's tail no longer hung. It slashed at the air where he just was and missed, and instead Baldur pivoted on his heel and spun around to deliver a wicked two-handed back-slash to the spine of the flying snake right where the wings met. The blue light of his sword cut the wings off and for a moment, the <<Wyvern>> seemed to begin to fall before it exploded into a shower of light and polygons.

"Ha! I sure showed you who's boss!"

He watched his HP tick up one point from his Battle-Healing. He had really hoped the lifesteal would trigger more and keep him at full health when he ended these fights, but the <<Wyvern>> was a tougher foe than the other average mobs on the floor.

"At least you were nice and dropped me something pretty to give to my lady love."

Baldur tapped to close the small box that popped up in his UI giving him his rewards from the battle.

"Oh hey! Ding! Woot!" Baldur pumped a fist into the air. "Level 10 baby!"

Baldur continued to scan around the area, looking for another Wyvern, but he couldn't see one. He should take a little break and regen some HP, so he instead started looking around for some mats. Tyger could always use more mats for her crafting.

[iD: 12034 LD: 15] +1 Mat

As he looked around, he found that one of the trees was interactable and of the <<Ironwood>> type. He tapped the tree twice and pulled up the menu that let him interact with it. Hitting the harvest option, Baldur began to hack down the tree until some material showed up in his inventory.

"This should make for a good shield!" Baldur said with a smile. As he looked around to see if he could get anymore.

With his HP bar basically full, Baldur began to walk around the forest looking for more mobs to fight. As he did, he came across what appeared to be an NPC Elf and a Wyvern fighting one another. The Elf with the spear was engaged with the Wyvern, and the elf in the back was throwing daggers at the Wyvern once the ability was off cooldown. With a smile which could only because by sweet revenge, Baldur got into the <<Charge>> pre-motion, and then let the system carry him to his revenge. He was a blue and white blur as he shot across the field and struck the stupid <<Elven Ambusher>>.

"Eat digital steel!"

The slash of his sword tore through the elf, sending the creature's form tumbling to the ground.

"How about THAT for a surprise attack!"

While the Elf was still reeling from Baldur's blow, he whirled his blade about and drove the tip into its form, shattering it into thousands of tiny polygons. He had a sadistic smile on his face. After the bloody things had ambushed him so many times, he had finally gotten the drop on one of them. Not only that, but his lifesteal filled him up to full.

That's how it should be.

Turning, he faced the <<Wyvern>> and the <<Elven Hunter>> with his blade gripped in both hands. This would be an interesting fight.

  • 4 weeks later...

The <<Elven Hunter>> and the <<Wyvern>> were locked in combat, the Spear the hunter was wielding deftly parried the flying dragon-like creature's scorpion-like tail, and then countered with a blow of its own. The hunter didn't do much damage to the winged beast, it was easy to see where this battle would go. Baldur took a moment to weigh his decision. Which would would he help out? Eliminate the small-fry and fight the big one one on one? Or attack the big one and see if the hunter would help him. He could end up fighting both of them that way.

The safer bet was to attack the hunter.

Crouching down to activate his <<charge>> skill, Baldur flew into the battle, striking the Hunter with a powerful flow and dropping it over half of its hit points.  Unfortunately, none of his abilities activated, but he hadn't taken any damage for his lifesteal to do him any good yet anyways.

The <<Elven Hunter>>, surprised by Baldur's attack, reeled back and struck at Baldur with his spear, thrusting toward his face with the wicked elven weapon. Baldur  ducked to the side and was was able to catch the spear on his sword and deflect it, flinging the spear away from him using his sword as a lever and leaving the <<Elven Hunter>> open for the <<Wyvern>>. The flying creature hissed menacingly and lashed with its scorpion like stinger and got a critical hit against the Hunter as it pierced the elf's stomach. Half of the Hunter's remaining HP was dropped by the attack and with Baldur's blade inside of his guard, Baldur stepped forward and cut horizontally with his blade slicing the hunter through the neck and leaving a red trail of wire mesh a moment before the mob exploded into thousands of polygons.

Baldur's blue eyes and the beady red ones of the <<Wyvern>> met as they squared off against one another now.

"Just you and me, bucko"
