[SP-F6] How do I Katana? - Katana Learning Thread [Complete!]

Recommended Posts

"I swear, my character is bugged..." He had woken up the previous night to the feeling of his nerves catching on fire. Naturally nothing of the sort happened, but the feeling was not pleasant. When he started to check through his menus to see if a status effect had triggered or if something was wrong, he noticed that his katana skill... disappeared? He had soon noticed that it wasn't just that, but his weapon skills seemed to have been turned back too! He was thankful that the game didn't eat his hard earned SP though. Although a blessing in a way since he could reuse his points, he hoped such glitches didn't become a regular thing. He did not want to be the person who figured out what happens when your save data becomes corrupt in a death game. Whatever it was, it could not be pleasant for anybody involved.

He briefly recalled the tale of .hack//sign before deciding he would try to relearn the Katana skill again. "Well, nothing to do about it here..." He said to himself as he stood himself up and out of his bed. He decided to equip himself for the day with his Amber Eyepiece, Red Leather Jacket, and Bloodmoon Scimitar. He didn't have the katana skill and obviously holding that weapon was not a prerequisite as he had gotten it while holding a scimitar. While stepping through the inn, and ogling the amazonian NPC that filled the area, he decided to skip breakfast as getting this done was a spot more important to him. His work outside of town was at stake here. He figured that amazons would probably have training dummies of some sort so he thought to track them down.

It took him about a half hour of searching before he did finally locate the floor's training grounds. All throughout the little area was amazons training their virtual bodies, working rather hard at it too if Kalesh was guessing at how sweaty they seemed. He took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down as he looked to find an available dummy, soon finding one that was not occupied. He heard some NPC whispering and noticed staring. He suddenly chuckled in realization that to them it was probably absurd that a male would be training. Only women were warriors to them he'd wager. Happily listing off the applying tropes he took his position before a tall training dummy, sized up for the amazons. He spent a moment considering how he unlocked katanas the first time.

Kalesh opened up his skill list, pushing it off to a corner of his vision. He didn't want it in the way but he wanted it to be in place. He poured enough SP into his One-Handed Curved Swords skill so that he truly did have the skill. He doubted Kayaba would be dumb enough to introduce an unlockable skill without a prerequisite. With the preparation completed he began to draw his scimitar, the serrated blade nice and lethal looking, as well as having a blade as long as his leg. "Okay, let's see..." Kalesh makes a few experimental swings at the dummy, noting that it seemed to have no HP, was sliced through like a mob but didn't shatter, and was actually a training dummy rather than an NPC prop to give the world more realism that a player cannot be part of.

Having confirmed the training dummy wasn't just a pointless object he readied himself into his one-handed stance, hacking away at the training dummy with swing after swing. He kept going for several minutes, sometimes even throwing in a sword art in case that was the prerequisite. After exhausting himself against the dummy he sighed in momentary defeat, hooking a finger into his shirt and pulling it forward and back to air out and fan his heated body. The exercise was nice, actually, even being in town didn't bother him as long as he stayed active it would seem. This was a good thing to know, as it more or less meant there was something he could do to keep from getting anxious when in town for extended periods of time.

Having learned a new coping mechanism, he glanced to his left to confirm if he had learned any new skills. The answer was no. He scrolled up and down but there was no sign of a katana skill or any new skills of any kind. Kalesh sighed softly as he decided to try something different. Maybe if he showed the system he had the desire to use a katana? To that end he took his weapon into both his hands, two handing a one handed sword. It felt strange for some reason but chose to ignore that feeling in favor of experimentation. He started to slowly and methodically cut at the training dummy, mimicking motion he had seen in anime, samurai movies, just general katana-like stances and strikes.

Having glanced to his left and confirming there were absolutely no katana skill still, he scratched his head curiously as if trying to think of a solution. Maybe he was going too slow and he had to be a little more confident? He shrugged his shoulders and took a deep breath before he started hacking at the training dummy as if it were a life or death situation, sending numerous crimson markings across the wooden punching bag of sorts until he had exhausted himself again. Once more, no skill showed up so he was left pouting a bit, crossing his arms and shutting his eyes as he caught his breath and thought as hard as his easily distracted mind could on how to unlock the skill. Maybe there was a time limit of sorts? Maybe he needed to be more precise and speedier? He ran a hand through his long crimson hair before readying himself to try again.

This time he wasn't going to hold anything back. He took a deep breath and triggered his concentration skill, feeling time slowing down just a little he started hacking at several weak points on the dummy. The places limbs would connect on a person, the throat, the eyes, even going as far as to jab the end of his weapon into the dummy's heart just as the skill wore off and time sped up to normal. He heard a slight 'ooh' and looked back to see a handful of amazons watching him before suddenly returning to what they were doing as if embarrassed they were caught staring or something. He momentarily wondered how advanced the AI was before chuckling and refocusing after he got distracted.

Taking a breath to regain his focus he looked to his left and blinked, sheathing his scimitar and rubbing his eyes before looking again. "Katana: Unranked" he mutters softly to himself before grinning widely and throwing his hands into the air with a 'whoo!' He spent little time removing his scimitar from his equipment and replacing with with his katana Darkest Night. As far as damage went, this rare katana was as strong as his perfect scimitar, the only thing that separated them was a bleed effect. He got to work pouring two ranks worth of SP into his katana before drawing the blade with a confident grin. He was eager to test the blade out on the dummy now that a sense of accomplishment had gone through him.

Kalesh stared at the dummy with focus in his eyes, double checking his known sword arts and their positions before he made the blade begin to glow with the light of his first katana art! He watched closely as he was helped through the motion. An upward slash, a downward one that traced the path of the first to deepen the cut, and then he jabbed forward hard, right in the red line on the dummy and into the center of is exposed chest. The blade pierced through the back of the dummy, earning a gasp from the small audience. He smiled cheerily at the interesting power of his sword, tugging the blade out of the dummy with some effort as he held the blade in his hands, glancing it over before tossing it into one hand and testing the weight. "We are gonna need something heavier I think..." He said before finding the sword's sheath on his hip, pushing the blade into its home before saying to himself "Should find some heavier ores... Been working with the lower half floors up until now... maybe up here there will be something better."

With his mind made up he gave the amazons another curious glance before shrugging his shoulders and beginning his walk to the nearest border using his map. He figured he'd have to see how advanced the Amazon AI was some other time when he wasn't set in his eagerness to discover something new. First and foremost he removed his eyepiece and instead equipped his lucky charm. The better he could see hidden thing the more likely he was to get his ores. In time he found himself at the city's border where he drew his blade with a deeeep breath. Stepping into the danger zone he started exploring into the jungle floor with wide curiosity in his eyes. He hadn't ever really spent much time exploring here, more a fan of the pleasant heat and humidity and the eyecandy all around than anything up until this day.

Kalesh took a deeeeep breath of the surrounding jungle's humid air, smiling at the pleasant but strong scents around him from the dense plantlife. He kept his sword at the ready while hoping that he wouldn't need it. He wanted to peacefully gather ores for his next, and more powerful, katana. It was at this point he needed to really focus on what he was going to do for his weapon's extra third slot. He needed more utility than just raw damage so that was passed off as a no. Bleed was useful since it was unmitigated damage, paralysis just felt... icky to him, and he already had all the accuracy he could need. The only other option was Keen, but it didn't sound particularly useful if he was honest. He sighed softly as he passed materials up since he was lost in his thought, exploring deeper into the jungles.

Having finished his thoughts on his weapon, he tried to focus on what he would do for armor and so forth. Though, that wasn't really a concern. He had all the accessories he could want for now, and he was just waiting on his armor commission to be completed! He sighed happily while thinking about the red hooded jacket with silver pieces of armor both under and over the leather. He only hoped it was as impressive in the real world as it looked in his head. He felt his foot catch on something so he looked down with wide eyes, seeing a small chunk of metal poking out of the ground. He knelt down and gave it a nice tug, smiling as he looked it over and tossed it up and down like a baseball before dematerializing it. "That'll do." He said as he stood himself up.

He smiled as hope went through him from how heavy that ore felt, eagerly glancing around to see if more was around this general area. His eyes were trained to the ground to see if he caught sight of anything shiny. He decided to do what he always always always did when he was looking for ore. Check under the trees. He was almost certain one programmer hid stuff under tree roots just as a personal joke or something. Lo and behold, there was in fact another piece of ore hidden beneath one such root that was poking under the ground. He spent a moment carving it out with his katana before he inventoried the ore and nodded in approval about his luck thus far. Some days it was tough to get any materials after all!

Having finished gathering his second chunk of ore he naturally began searching for a third. He started by rummaging through some bushes, deciding to test fate and take a berry off of it and putting the berry into his mouth. The taste was immediately poisonous so he spat it out with a loud 'blegh!' and cleaned his moused several times before shaking his head. "Ugh. Okay, the dark purple ones are -not- edible... Maybe they could be useful though..." He smiles as he gathers up a small pile of the berries. Perhaps he could get some made into something useful for him. Poisons were always good for fights, or maybe the poison could be diluted to a non-lethal dosage that would give a buff. Anything was possible!

Having finished gathering the poison berries he started glancing around for anything else he might need. He hummed softly in thought while thinking about the anatomy of a sword. He grinned happily as he hit his fist into his palm. "Wood!" He had no lack of that around him. The entire area was full of trees and so he barely hesitated before taking his katana into his hands. He took a breath and trained his eyes on one of the thicker looking branches of a tree nearby and slashed as hard as his virtual arms could! A moment later the branch fell to the ground and Kalesh measured it a little in comparison to his sword before nodding in approval and adding what didn't shatter to his inventory, it seeming to have been salvageable after all!

Kalesh started counting on his fingers the things he had in his possession and what they could be used for. Metal for a blade, wood for a handle and sheath, as well as some poison for making the blade that much more deadly. He was getting more and more confident with each material he found that he could have a great weapon made from them! He hummed while looking around for anything else he could possibly put to use in the future. Nothing immediately popped out to him though. He had no real experience with most professions so he could only wonder what the other players saw in these items. Did they treat them like chemicals that could be mixed, or as the raw form of something that needs to be diluted or condensed? He had no idea but he knew they could help him.

He took a deep breath as he tried to focus himself again after not finding any materials in the area. He thought he should start back to the village and by extension the teleport plaza. He hadn't been out long, that was true, but he wanted to take a break to confirm his character wasn't going to glitch out again. The last thing he needed was an error in combat so he wanted to wait a while to see if it came back. The materials he had would make do for now along with those he had saved for another time. "Ugh... I guess there are worse places to stay..." The sixth floor was actually kind of nice. The homes weren't as well put together as the other floors. It felt like he was in the wild to a point rather than in a safe and secure house. He oddly liked that.

He smiled when he stepped into the amazon village and sheathed his sword, deciding to make his way to his inn he was expecting to just have a nice nap before he would try teleporting to a smith so they could make his blade. While thinking about who would be put on the job he blinked as he almost collided with one of the amazon NPC, instinctively opening his mouth to apologize until she held out what looked like a large centipede. It definitely had a lot of meat under its shell. He was dumbfounded for a moment until the NPC said with... what appeared to be a blush "Here. You work hard at training field, this will help you grow strong." Kalesh stared as he slowly grabbed the dead bug which registered as a trade and the item was revealed as a cooking material. After giving her gift the amazon ran off leaving Kalesh standing there with wide eyes. "Wat?"

He looked down to his hand, up at where the amazon had run to, back and forth a few times before he inventoried the large insect and crossed his arms in thought at what he had just experienced as he made his way to the inn, idly dropping some col on a counter and making his way to the room he normally occupied. He shut and locked the door behind him before sitting on chair with a desk and entering the Gendo pose. "Okay... Went training, learned katana, NPC were watching. Left, returned, NPC gave me a gift and was... blushing." He furrowed his brow and said "... Was I being courted by an NPC? The hell? Do they even have functions like that?" He was utterly befuddled, groaning as he slunk back into his seat, lazing about for several hours in the knowledge he wouldn't be getting some sleep for a little while. This was a bit much for him to think about.
