[PP-NK-F11] <<Earning a Living>> (Hirru) Exterminate!

Recommended Posts

The sun was beginning to rise on the 11th floor, and Baldur waited just inside the safe-zone of the main settlement Taft. As he leaned against the wall, he saw a few groups of extra adventurous players come back in through the main gate with a tired aura about them. The floors were commonly accepted to be more dangerous at night, but Baldur wasn't here to soak up the bonus experience, instead he was here for the hunt. He needed a lot of Cor and a lot of material in order to keep up with the demands of being on the fight line... and to that end, he had called in a new ally he had made.

Hirru, The Jade Hunter.

Rain, who had been the player trying to follow in Takao's footsteps as a scout had buried himself in his shop and not come out for quite some time. In the meantime, Baldur and Hirru had helped out the up-and-coming player Itzal with one of the lower level quests. Now, through sheer energy and determination, Itzal was quickly catching up.

Baldur looked around the teleport square, waiting for the man to join him for their hunting and gathering excursion. Reaching into his pack, Baldur pulled out a <<Greater Mitigation Potion II>> that he had gotten from Rain and drank down the bottle. He saw the buff icon pop up showing that he now had a bonus 36 mitigation to his stats. The bottle, now empty, shattered into a shower of polygons that rained onto his feet. He reached into his pack and found another potion, this one would boost his damage. Baldur had always turned his nose up at potions that weren't perfect, but he had found that they were exceptional items when it came to trying to farm.

Today, they would be going into the Ant Hill dungeons on the far side of the floor near the Labyrinth. The further you went down, the more difficult the mobs were, and the dungeon still managed to give him a good amount of XP. Resting his hand on the katana at his side, Baldur tried his best to wake up before @Hirru arrived so that they could set out right away.

It never occurred to the hunter that what he took for "honest work," would turn out as well as it has.  One of his previous ventures had been with two people that had happened upon each other for a special quest.  One of them, a samurai known as Baldur, had contacted him about another job; supposedly a hunting job, but that was to be determined.  His message said that they would be venturing through the 11th floor, so the hunter spent the night in the guild hall, even though they didn't have any rooms or beds.

With his current work hanging around the lower floors, he never really had an opportunity to focus the upper floors, even if his base of operations was also on said floor.  He mostly kept himself on the lower floors because of the newer players that were coming into the more dangerous floors, like Itzal, that wanted to better themselves, instead of becoming puppets to the despair.

Waking up a bit later than usual, the hunter looked at the time to find that it was getting a little close to the meeting time.  Equipping his new armor, which looked exactly like his previous armor except for a lion motif on the shoulder, and his sword, the hunter was finally ready.  He exited the guild hall and walked the rest of the way to the teleportation station to find the samurai already there.

"Howdy!  Hope you were not waiting long?"

Baldur smiled when he saw the Jade hunter walk up and greet him. It was an early start, especially since Baldur had found that many players seemed to be night owls, and spent most of the morning slowly getting up. But with them getting an early start, they would be able to travel to the far side of the floor, explore the dungeon, and then get back long before the night would begin to fall. It would be the safest bet, especially since he had planned for it to be a full day. He would have to treat Hirru to dinner or something afterwards as a thank you.

"No, not long. You ready?" Baldur would push himself off of the wall upon which he had been leaning and turn to the head through the gate once Hirru gave his answer. Opening the potion he had in his hand, Baldur chugged it down. It was another one of the free potions he had gotten from Rain's give-away. It was only a rare quality, but it would help them get through these giant ants at a much faster rate, and that's what he was after. He had full raid strength consumables, but he wanted to save those for raids. They were very expensive.

As they stepped out into the lightly wooded field surrounding the settlement of Taft, Baldur would turn to the Jade Hunter with a friendly expression on his face.

"So how have you been, Hirru? How are things with the Knights?"

The hunter nodded to the question before they headed out into the unknown for him.  The area beyond the town was surrounded by forest with multiple holes that seemed to spawn the ant creatures that everyone was talking about.  They were relatively powerful, but not too much to be a problem.  Especially for those that had pushed through the area already, the front liners.  The hunter would soon be joining them on the next floor raid, but he would probably be more useful as the designated healer.  That would mean crystals, and he didn't have any.

Breaking away from the thoughts that were swimming through his head, the hunter was asked about himself and the Knights.

"Everything seemed to be picking up, ever since Lowenthal took over as Vice Commander.  I'm getting a little busier with my hunter job, so I'm usually in and out of the guilds business."

The hunter said before stretching out his arms and back to get the rest of the aches out from sleeping in a chair.  Though, he had slept on worse material, he would been seen as insane to sleep outside.  He then redirected the question back to Baldur.

"How about you?  I see that you're apart of Spectrum, now."

He would say as he pointed out the guild symbol next to the samurai's health indicator.

Baldur lead the way as they headed down into the ant tunnels. On the surface, they had out-leveled the floor so much that the ants would ignore them, but as they descended, the Ants would begin to aggro them. Those were the floors he was aiming for, so he led them down deeper and deeper into the twisting, rounded tunnels that made up their extensive networks. Hopefully they could find the sub-dungeon down here as well. As they walked, Baldur noted that there seemed to be green, sugar-like crystals stuck into the wall throughout that they could use for light. It was dark, but not so dim that they would be at a disadvantage in combat.

"Lowenthal is the new Vice Commander, eh?" Baldur hadn't known that. He had spoken mostly with Macradon, whom he had assumed would be the heir apparently, but perhaps that was only because he didn't know this Lowenthal very well.

"The Coalition is doing well, though we're somewhere between a guild and a... brotherhood." He was about to say family but he didn't feel like that word fit just yet. Though, Baldur remarked to himself, every family has its black sheep. Baldur like Takao well enough, though he wasn't terribly familiar or close to the kid, it was more Teayre that gave him pause. He would support Calrex, however, in making sure that he could do everything in his power to save her.

"I was actually talking to Calrex about maybe trying to do a joint exercise -" Baldur's sentence caught off mid way as his eyes focused on a <<Warrior Ant>> whose Icon was somewhere in the pink spectrum. It wouldn't be a challenging fight for them, but it would be enough to give them materials and rewards, which is what they were after.

"I should have brought a loot consumable."

He nodded his head at Hirru, as the pair rounded the bend and came into full view of a small pack of <<Warrior Ants>> who were patrolling the tunnels.

"Here I go!" Baldur said with a crescendo of his voice. He crouched down and stepped into the pre-motion for his <<charge>> skill, rocketing him down the tunnel and into the middle of the ants where he activated his <<Amatsu no Homura>> art, his blade tearing through the four ants, and depleting a large portion of their health.

Immediately the ants collapsed on him. Normally he would have initiated with a stun art, but since he had Hirru, hopefully the scout would be right behind him and able to AoE the rest of them down. Until then, Baldur evaded to the best of his ability. Dodging, ducking, and dancing away from the pincers he had to use the <<Muramasa>> in order to fend off the last of them.

The hunter followed Baldur through the depths, as he seemed that much more knowledgeable about the area.  Winding tunnels that seemed to stretch for kilometers, or so the hunter thought.  They're passage seemed to be undeterred, as many of the ant mobs were either too busy to notice them, or where too low leveled to care.  Information could be gained through interacting with the workers, but it was best not to, at least from several sources.

As they continued into the ant tunnels, the hunter would keep his eyes scanning the area for anything that was out of the ordinary.  Though, he wouldn't be able to tell without using Reveal, until it was really needed.  They would be able to hear the ants before they saw them, for the most part.  That wasn't the thing that was getting to the hunter.  No, it was how well he could perform on the higher floors.

It was then that Baldur signaled that something was ahead, a <<Warrior Ant>> with a slightly red hue to its crystal.  It was a fairly even match for just the hunter, but he learned a bit from just walking through the tunnels.  These ants didn't work alone, they always worked in groups.

Sure enough, as they passed the bend, there were more.

Baldur immediately set upon them, leaving all of them in the red.  The hunter wouldn't be too far behind as his sword, Oath, began to glow a deep crimson.  Though, he did not have the <<Charge>> skill, like Baldur, he had sufficient faith in his skill.  The hunter cut straight into the first ant before using a thrusting attack against the second before using an overhead arc to come back down on the first.  As it shattered, the blade would find its home back into the second ant before it too shattered.  The last two would get a brunt of wild slashes that decapitated both before finishing.

"That's... the first time I ever used that one..!"

Baldur smiled when Hirru came in right behind them and turned them all into a pile of crystals and materials. One of the perks of bringing Hirru with him was that the hunter had a high bonus to his search and detect skills, which would give them a bonus when it came to collecting loot. Baldur had a decent one himself, but this was the hunter's focus more than it was Baldur's.

"Perfect! Let me know when you get low on energy, cause they're going to get tougher as we go down."

Turning, Baldur headed quickly into the next pack, one again assuming a posture that would quickly appear to Hirru to be one of his signiture ones. Crouching down into a sword drawing position, Baldur once again let the <<Charge>> skill take control of him as he let the system complete the movements of the <<Amatsu no Homura>>. They could do this because of the overwhelming power of his demonic blade, and the tag team nature of their complimentary sword arts. It was another reason why he had specifically chosen Hirru for this.

Plus, Baldur needed to gain levels on his friends, and knew that Hirru probably felt the same way. He couldn't catch up to Oikawa by always questing with the blond.

His form once again became a blue and orange blur as he danced among the ants, a smooth, always flowing form that struck each of them with his wicked katana. His normally azure sword art color was instead replaced with a cursed red color when he used this new blade. It was a blade of violence and battle, and Baldur loathed to use it, but the two of them were pushing the boundaries of what two people could accomplish. He just needed to make sure he didn't abuse it.

Unfortunately, there is always something that changes plans.

As the hunter was recovering from the burst of energy that was expended, he tried to move to accompany Baldur's next assault, but something was preventing him from moving.  That was the cool-down of the last art, Shadow Explosion, as it was his strongest AOE.  The time to recover was much different than Lightning Fall and Meteor Break, but that was to be expected.

As if it couldn't get worse, the ants that Baldur were fighting seemed much more hardy than the ones previous.  They were only taken a bit past the 3/4th's mark, but were still in the yellow.  He was sure that the samurai could take them, but this was supposed to be a team effort.

"Baldur!  My art hasn't recovered; I can't move in time!"

Which didn't make much sense.  Why was a one handed weapon skill taking this long?  Was it because it was the first time that he had used it, or something else?  The hunter didn't have much time to think until he regained his control, but it wouldn't be in time to help Baldur.

Baldur heard Hirru call out that something was wrong, but in the middle of dodging the attacks of the ants, he couldn't very well process what the hunter was calling out. Only that he seemed concerned and hadn't jumped in the fight. Baldur spared a heartbeat to look around and didn't see any more for the larger, more aggressive <<SergeAnt>> ants. As another of the multi-sectioned creatures lunged at him with it's giant mandibles wide, Baldur struck the bone with his blade, batting it away and causing damage to neither of them. He supposed this was a good time to use thorns style equipement, but he never got around to getting them.

A moment later, Baldur knew that his AoE ability would be off of cooldown, and so he stepped towards the first ant and with a thunderous Fumikomi, Baldur's arms and swords seemed to blur as the system took over his movements. The normally pure azure light was replaced instead with the wicked red of the Muramasa as the blade once again required life. With quick, sure motions faster than the eye could see, Baldur had slashed through each of the the remaining ants, causing them to shatter into polygons.

"Sorry Hirru, I should have waited to make sure you were ready. It's the bad habbit of being mostly a solo player I suppose." Baldur blushed a bit embarrassed as he ran his hand along the back of his neck.

"Anyways, so far so good though. Loots like our haul is doing better than I had expected for just starting out.

It didn't take long for the ants to be destroyed by Baldur's intense attacks.  It seemed that his weapon was much stronger than most other weapons, as the hunter had found.  His greatest example of that was Opal, whom already had full damage capabilities when she lead the Knights of the Blood Oath.  She could easily take out a field boss in one hit..

..or kill the strongest players in one hit.

The hunter sighed heavily while shaking the negative thoughts from his head.  He didn't know why she did it, nor did he care.  He only wanted to continue what she would have been, a good leader and hunter for all.  That's how he would remember her, as that was what bound them.

"You're not at fault.  I was just surprised by the extended duration of the new sword arts.  I should be able to move past it.  Just need more practice."

He would say when Baldur apologized to him.

"That is true, but this is only the beginning.  Are you up for another group?"

Baldur smiled at the Jade Hunter once they had both had a chance to catch his breath. This sort of an excursion was common for Baldur, but he was always pushing himself to the edge. Without the free consumables he had gotten form Rain and the sword he had gotten from Teayre, this feat that they were accomplishing would not be possible. He was currently operating with the damage potential of someone quite a few levels above them, at Tier 3 levels. This was a lucrative spot for them, however, and so he pressed on.

"I am ready indeed. Let's see what we can find."

Leading Hirru deeper into the ant tunnels, Baldur began to feel a bit lost. He had been told by an infobroker that the glowing sugar crystals on the wall would mark out different areas, and they really only had to worry if the crystals turned red. It meant they were near the queen and the most powerful ants were found there.

"Alright, there's more ahead!"

And then Baldur took up his signature stance again, preparing his <<charge>> as he became a blue and orange blur once more, crashing into the center of the <<SergeAnt>> patrol, as he gracefully attacked and deflected in such a single, flowing movement that it almost seemed he was using their own strength against him, the crimson sword art trailing behind him as he slashed them all, dropping their HP down almost to the red.

"You go this!"

They wasted no time after the fact.  Their presence in the ant tunnels was becoming more aggravating towards the populace, and it was starting to show.  The soldier ants were becoming stronger as they went on, and were only going to become that much worse as they continue.  If there was a dungeon in this place, it would house a horrid creature, to be sure.

Though, that didn't stop them from continuing the hunt.  Baldur's attacks flourished out against another group of ants, which the hunter would not passed up.  His Oath, enshrouded in crimson, cut through the rest of their health at a faster pace than before.  Soon, they were all shattering before the hunter was done with the last slash.

Looking around, there didn't seem to be any more around.  Even Reveal wasn't showing anything unusual.

"It looks like we can take some time to recuperate.  There isn't anything within a few meters of my sight."

He would say as he turned off his reveal when looking towards the samurai.

"I'm sure you're drained of energy."

Baldur looked around once more, prepared to fight the next ant should any arrive, but a silence instead settled over the chamber they found themselves in. Letting out a soft breath of releaf, Baldur whipped the sword around in a half circle and then slowly and ritualistically sheathed the blade into its sheath, and as he did so, he made a gesture as if throwing something away; his adrenaline, his blood lust, his ferocity... whatever it was, he seemed to calm down once his post battle ritual was over. Taking the now sheathed swords in hand, Baldur sat down and leaned against the wall with the two swords across his lap.

"Yea, I could probably take one, but not more than that."

Reaching into his pouch, Baldur quickly nibbled on a piece of bread before something seemed to occur to him.

"Oh, hey, you should use these to see if you can find our dungeon. My <<Search & Detect>> skill is pretty low, and I don't have detect, so I had these made."

Baldur leans over and loans Hirru his <<Monocle of Sight V2>> and his <<Bandit's Lucky Rabbit's Foot>>.

"The Monocole boosts the Search and Detect skill itself, assuming you don't have it maxed out, and it gives a bonus to searching as well. The Rabbit's foot is just a straight up bonus." He smiles as he leans back against the cave wall again and now sips at some water from his inventory.

"I think we could probably handle an intermediate dungeon on our own, but if we find one of the big ones, we might need to call in reinforcements."

In spite of his words, Baldur seemed very relaxed about the entire thing. While a dungeon boss on this floor would hit very hard, they would have a limited amount of HP, and he felt confident that Baldur and Hirru could burn through it before either of their lives were in jeopardy.

The hunter had allowed himself to settle himself on the wall next to Baldur, but kept his Reveal on in one eye.  For the most part, there didn't seem to be anything that was coming towards them, but the hunter could see everything else.  The tunnels that these ants could create were monstrous in size, and they still had plenty to go through.  Most of the ants that the hunter could see were just workers tending to food stores, or soldiers prowling the tunnels.

Unfortunately, the range of Reveal was fairly short, but could be buffed by luck raising items and equipment.

"Huh?"

His first response to Baldur offering his items to the hunter.  The samurai described each item as the hunter looked at them.  They were fairly well made, and he would see why when he started using his appraisal skill set to look at the full stats of each.  These were made by the Crimson Maiden herself, Teayre.  He made a small note to appraise a holy blade for her, if the day ever came.

"Alright, I'll give it a try."

As Baldur leaned against the wall, watching Hirru examine the equipment Baldur had loaned him, he offered some of the bottle of water he had brought to the Jade Scout. It wasn't anything fancy, but sometimes after strenuous work, Baldur found that his mind still wanted something to drink to parch a perceived thirst, rather than an 'actual' one imposed by the system.

"I haven't decided if I want to invest in the reveal skill or not, so I figure our best chance of finding a good dungeon is for you to have all the luck bonus you can."

Baldur glanced around them, he had a decent rank in the <<Search & Detect>> skill, but his intent had been more to gather loot from monsters instead of tracking down hidden dungeons. It was a useful skill, but Baldur didn't feel confident in having enough SP to dedicate to those skills when he had more 'important' ones like his armor skill that was waiting to help keep him alive. Of course, dungeons were the best places to get XP, so it was a chicken and the egg argument with Baldur. The items had been an easy middle ground.

"So are you still planning to join us for the boss fight? I'm down here trying to get enough material and Cor to stock up on the consumables I'll need for the fight. I still owe my drug dealer quite a bit of money." Baldur laughed softly at the way he referred to Rain, the Alchemist who made most of his crystals and potions.

When the hunter equipped the items, he was surprised to find the results.  His range had increased to at least twice its original value, and could easily see everything in a wide radius.  The tunnels were still twisting in directions that he could not follow, but there was an interesting area, if they continued to keep to the left.  There didn't seem to be much defenses around it either, but to have something that can't be seen could only mean one thing.

"I'm picking up something not too far from our current position.  It's not heavily guarded, so it should be easy for the both of us."

He would say as he continued the search, but nothing else would follow.  There were more tunnels that lead past his sight, but that could take some time to get through.  The tunnels wind to much to navigate on memory alone, and detailed maps are becoming a little too expensive for his tastes.

Baldur stood up and dusted himself off from dirt and dust that didn't actually exist, it was just a habit left over from the real world that emulated the situation that they found themselves in. The samurai glanced around and then focused on the left tunnel that Hirru had pointed out.

"That way, eh? I had an old friend who used to say 'when in doubt, go left.' whenever we found ourselves lost in a dungeon."

Baldur gave a smirk, but held back a laugh.

"I guess that was back when dungeoneering was a game and not life or death. But yes, put the combat gear back on if you want, and then let's head that way."

Baldur took a moment to arrange and compose himself, and to allow Hirru to do the same as well before he headed for the nearby bend. As they got closer, Baldur saw the field change as they entered a beginner dungeon, and then heard the subtle background music change.

"Well, while I'm disappointed it's not a more difficult dungeon, this is certainly the safe bet since it's just the two of us."

Resting his hand on the sword, Baldur followed the winding tunnels. They could undoubtedly come upon some enemies, but as yet, the tunnel was clear.

After assessing for any more life signatures, the hunter unequipped the loaned items and gave them back to Baldur.  It was nice to have something that could boost his searching capabilities, but he would rather have something like that with a party.  He relied too heavily on his current equipment to try anything else, especially while hunting alone.  He would have to rectify that somehow.  Maybe there were some skills that he did not know about, yet.  Of course, he would find that out later.

"I'm sure that there is something else down there, but for now, I can't see it.  Also, I'd rather not call anyone else down into this mess, and expect them to find us in a timely manner."

The tunnels continued to twist and turn, but only enough to keep them going down.  It wouldn't be long before the hunter's Reveal would ping four hostile marks from the oncoming tunnel.

"We have company!  Four ants, can't tell how strong they are, though."

When Hirru said that there were four more ants up ahead, Baldur nodded his head and rested his hand upon the hilt of the Muramasa. The fabled blade was ready for another fight. Slowing his imaginary heartbeat, Baldur lept out from the bend that hid the nearby <<SergeAnts>> and skidded across the tunnel, buying him just enough time to lock his vision onto the nearest ant so he could target it with his <<Charge>> skill. The blue and orange samurai wannabe disappeared for a moment only to reappear in the midst of the ants, his blows a quick flurry of light that followed where his blade had been until he had cut through each of the four ants present.

"Now!"

Baldur called out once he had been successful in drawing their attention, but he was prepared for them, and was learning their attacks more and more. The Ants began to claw and bit at him, but Baldur danced away from them with experience and the occasional parry with the blade. Had he been using one of his other swords, they would be paralyzed or bleeding, but they would also have a lot more HP. Hopefully Hirru would hit and they'd get another good haul from these.

The hunter was right behind the samurai when he called out, following up with his own area of effect sword art, Shadow Explosion.  The warrior ants didn't stand a chance, and shattered before they could cry out.  If this was a mission, then they succeeded on getting to the objective, as these ants seemed to be guarding a make-shift doorway, which separated the main tunnels from whatever was inside.  The hunter couldn't see much from the outside, and Reveal was showing something big.

While he was scanning, the hunter glanced at the loot window that would pop up soon.  His eyes immediately widened at the sight of the col amount.  They had doubled their col gain from just one group, and there were some rare items that also came with the mix.  It was nearly the motherlode, if not truly.

"Well, if these guys have that kind of loot on them, I can't wait to see what's in the next room."
