After a while in being in SAO more bosses we’re only going to be discovered in a amount of time… however, recently a group of information brokers hired some explorers to check out a mysterious castle that had appeared on floor 10, on arrival they couldn’t get in no matter how hard they tried… not even Aincrad’s best Scout could get in. And on the door there are 9 crystal slots, which presumably you needed 9 specific gems to get in, then miraculously they had found a dragon protecting an emerald in the plains of floor 1, it was said that the dragon hatched not too long ago and no matter what they tried they couldn’t get the Emerald from the dragon. They ask of you for help, maybe collecting all 9 will meet in grand fortune?

Beat smiled at the NPC as the quest acceptance screen came up.

"Sure, I'll beat the little guy for ya!"

He hit accept and watched as the quest appeared in his quest log, which was kept fairly tidy as he hated it when quests piled up constantly. Beat's fingers danced in the air as he proceeded to optimize his gear, enjoying the ability to wear his old red hand wraps. The benefits of training his familiar to enhance his damage had made the metallic gauntlets, made by a certain blacksmith, he normally wore obsolete. He removed the ring that he normally used for ensuring better drops and equipped his recent purchase from Shield. The silver hoop earring felt odd for a few minutes as he walked through the marking the boundaries of the City of Beginnings. The idea of fighting a dragon, even a baby one, excited Beat. If the dragon was strong enough to require help, it was likely that, despite its age, it was a fearsome opponent. THe most intriguing part about the quest was the fact that it was part of a chain of quests to obtain nine gems to unlock a door. The idea was very much up Beat's alley.

Beat continued down the beaten path that practically every player had likely walked down at some point. The contrast to the higher floors was certainly noticeable as the beginning floor looked like some right out of a pleasant dream, where nothing bad could happen. While it was a nice thought, Beat knew that anything could happen, even on this dreamscape of a floor. As if fate had decided to prove his musings correct, four bodies of light suddenly appeared, quickly taking shape as a small pack of mangy wolves. Beat looked to the sky with an amused expression as he lowered his stance and prepared to strike.

“You’re funny, really funny.”

Beat’s glowing leg spun around as the Wolves dove in to attack batting them each away, save for one, who had managed to sink its teeth into Beat’s leg as it connected. Beat winced reflexively as he he followed through, tossing the canine off toward one of its pack mates. Beat smirked as he began to bounce on the balls of his feet.

“Ballsy guy. How does THAT not hurt you more?”

Beat [396/420] [19/42]

Beat crouched as the wolves regained their composure and darted in and out, snapping their jaws and snarling at him as he moved and feinted to make them think twice about attacking. Gradually they continued to close in, unaware of Beat's range and how close they were to falling right into his trap. Finally, once he was sure they had no chance of escaping, Beat sprung his trap.

"Gotcha!"

Crouching low and placing a hand on the ground, Beat swept his glowing foot around, catching each of the canine's it the head. This staggered all but one of them. The enduring wolf managed to shake off the damage it had suffered and leap in, sinking its jaws into Beat's grounded arm, taking from underneath him and causing him to fall. Beat lied on the ground glaring at offender before finally standing up and dusting himself off. He pointed at the wolf whose teeth had left the digital red markers on his arm.

"You asked for it!"

Horus circled above as Beat stared at the wolf who had painted a target on its back. Beat was considering using a single target sword art just to put the mangy wolf in its place, but decided against it as it would only serve to tire him out and prolong the fight, a mistake Shield would yell at him for at the least. As he finalized his strategy, one of the wolves moved out of his line of sight long enough to gain the jump on him, tackling him to the ground and snapping at his face as he held it just out of reach by it's jowls.

"urgh! Get....OFF!"

Beat tossed the canine aside and kipped up onto his feet, having lost his tempo. He settled back down and calmly dodged the follow up strikes from the alpha's witty attack.

"Too bad seventy-five percent of you suck at once!"

With the wolves close by while Beat calmly evaded their uncoordinated offensive, Beat spun on the balls of his left foot, bringing his glowing right leg around clockwise, from Horus's viewpoint, catching each of the canines with his heel, sending his opponent's sprawling save for one who landed on its feet, springing on Beat and digging its fangs into his shoulder. Beat winced from the painless pressure and removed the animal from his arm by grabbing the scruff of its neck. He held the mangy predator at arm's length, but turned as that they could stare into the eye of one another.

"You're done, got it? Just a few more moments until you're nothing more than money and materials for me to cook."

He tossed the wolf into one of its mates as he prepared to end the fight once and for all, ready to be done with the smelly animals and collect the spoils of his efforts.

Beat placed a pair of fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly, evoking a predatory screech from his falcon familiar. Horus screamed towards the wolves surrounding his master, scraping them with his talons and evading their retaliations, enjoying the thrill of coordinated combat. The wolves, preoccupied with the elusive Horus had not noticed that their primary target had taken to the air, having switched perspectives with his familiar. Beat's body rotated backwards as he quickly brought his glowing leg up, producing a long wave of energy that screamed towards the wolves below.

"Flash Kick!"

Horus, noticing the light from Beat's attacking beginning to illuminate the ground, flapped his wings hard to ascend above the wave of energy, which collided with all four wolves, leaving nothing more than a fissure in the ground. Beat landed softly and held his hand out for Horus to land on. With his free hand, he navigated his menus to switch hiw weapon out for the ring that was likely to help him find more materials. He looked to Horus with a smile as he resumed his journey to the nearby mountains that were said to be the home of the dragon he was to slay.

"Nice fight buddy! Let's move on!"

Beat [376/420]

Rest - 1/3

Beat took his time as he took in the scenery. The plains of the first floor were tame, much like the monsters that inhabited the floor. That wasn’t to say that rabid wolves were tame, but the monsters on the fifth floor made the wolves he had just dispatched look absolutely adorable. The other easy comparison to draw was the weather conditions. Floor five was prone to sand storms outside of the safe zones and you were guaranteed to end up with pockets full of sand by the end of any adventure through the desert. By comparison, floor one was a cool sixty-five degrees with clear skies and fresh air. Beat was suddenly reminded of the sub-dungeon map he had discovered in the deserts of the fifth floor and let out a sigh of frustration as his brow scrunched up at the thought of going to the fifth floor again.

Rest - 2/3

The mountain where the dragon lived was surrounded by a large wooded area, mostly comprised of Spruces, various deciduous trees and shrubs. The leafy woods were a pleasant sight and wildlife darted through the trees, though it was mostly just rabbits and dear who were curious but too skittish to get close enough. Horus took off, soaring high above the treetops and doing his lookout/scout duties as he always did when danger was possibly afoot. His perch on Beat’s shoulder was source of comfort for him, but Horus was happiest in areas where he could fly high above and watch over his partner. He let out a cry that echoed around the mountain, letting Beat know they were on the right path.

Nice. It would suck if this were the wrong mountain or something.

Beat smiled as he continued to trek up the relatively easy mountain path, grateful for the option to wear the cloak, but a little displeased at the fact that Sword Art Online nullified pain, but not sensations like cold and heat.

Rest - 3/3 EP FULL!

The mountain path wound around the mountain for some time, lined with trees on the outside edge that almost acted as a natural guardrail to prevent players from falling off of the path. Eventually the path opened to a large flat area of grass and dirt that featured a small circle of stones that surrounded a small campfire. This location featured trees surrounding the edges of the area and a large cave opening that was large enough for two elephants. He smiled as he made his way over to the campfire, its warmth a welcome boon that nullified the chill of the mountain air as he sat on one of the large logs that surrounded the gentle flame. He leaned back, using his hands for support as his eyes scanned the area.

“Gotta remember this spot.”

As he surveyed the area, the glint or ore shimmered from one of the stones surrounding the air. Carefully, Beat stepped up and pocketed the stone, replacing it with another stone as he added the item to his inventory.

Beat stood from the relaxing campfire, saddened that his miniature camping trip had to come to an end. There was still a dragon to fight and he had goals he needed to accomplish.

Gotta catch up with Shield. A deadbeat dps is no good to a tank.

As he took his first step into the cave rushing footsteps could be heard coming from inside the cave. After a few moments, four pairs of glowing eyes emerged from the darkness. Beat put his hands in front and readied himself for a fight. The approaching assailants did not disappoint as four, humans covered in scales rather than skin, each wielding a spear and possessing a tail and wings came flying towards him. Beat skillfully parried each attack and let each pass, turning and throwing his leg out to release a wave of energy after the last one as it crashed into the group before they could turn around.

Beat let out and audible 'che' as he noticed the slight lack of impact his attack had, instantly knowing the problem. His right hand danced through the air as he removed his loot finding ring and equipped his hand wraps. As he kept his eyes on the four dragon anthromorphs that clearly been assigned to guard the youngling dragon. His right hand continued to work as he turned his left side to face them, parrying the first attack before evading the next two completely. The last one landed in front of him and opened its mouth wide, flames gathering in its throat warning Beat of what was coming.

"Oh shit!"

Beat leaped up and over the guard as a cone of red flames shot towards his allies. After the attack cleared, it was evident that hitting them with their own attack would not have any effect, though it was no less amusing to the martial artist as he tightened the wraps that now covered his hands.

"Not bad, but you're way too slow."

The dragon guards, now irritated as having one of their own attacks used against them, flew up and landed on each side of Beat, the martial artist letting them out of curiosity more than anything. He knew that on this floor, nothing but a boss would have a chance to dealing any kind of real damage. The dragon guard each began launching a volley of jabs with their spears, Beat moving his upper body to avoid each blow, the accuracy of each one abysmal save for one. Beat doubted it had been planned, but the way the four of them had struck during a particular sequence had forced Beat to move his feet in order to narrowly dodge a lethal hit, the blade of the spear grazing his cheek. Beat sighed as his leg glowed.

"Aww I was having fun...now I have to punish you."

WIth a quick spin, Beat's glowing leg crashed into each of the guard, blowing them back and cutting their health down further. Beat beckoned them again as he made it clear that he had no intentions of moving.

"Again!"

As if obeying the martial artist's command, the four dragon guards surrounded him and proceeded to resume their assault, no doubt believing that their minor success from before was a sign of things to come. Unfortunately for them, Beat's request had been to rectify that very mistake and use the chance to sharpen his evasion skills. Beat, having now seen their attack patterns like this once before, found it easier to dodge the attacks, despite the accuracy being of a higher caliber this time around.

"Your strikes are targeted better, but-" Beat jumped into the air and tucked his legs up, clearing the final stroke of the guards' assault, "But you're predictable!"

With a sudden spin and a glowing leg, Beat's leg found purchase in the heads of each of his targets, causing them to stagger back. Beat landed gracefully as he rooted himself on the ground again, his feet flat, but poised to move in an instant.

“Okay, I guess I’m done with you guys, you’re cool, but on this floor, you’re nothing.”

Beat’s left leg glowed once again as he threw it out, spinning blindingly fast on his heel, sending the force of his kick outward as a spinning circular halo that expanded outwards, colliding with of the guards again before they had fully recovered from the previous strike. Beat slumped over as he let out a moan of frustration, seeing how little each of them had left.

“Oh come on! You guys suck, you know that?”

Beat folded his arms as the guards slowly picked themselves up, each knocking on death’s door, but forced to continue on as the game’s programming dictated. It was likely a sad existence to be a random enemy in a videogame, but Beat figured it was unlikely that the programs actually felt anything like suffering. Still, the realism of Sword Art Online made distinctions like that difficult at times, especially considering how much Beat truly enjoyed being in the game.

Beat frowned at his energy bar as his eagerness to end the fight began to build. He had learned a thing or two, having put himself in disadvantageous positions to see how much he could really handle, but the dragon guards were tired and their attacks had become sloppy. Beat decided to take the few moments he needed to recharge enough to end the fight with one attack. Since attack power wasn't a concern, he opened his menu and began swapping his hand wraps for the luck ring that had afforded him many fortunate loot drops in the past.

"Come on guys, you have a few more seconds to turn this fight around."

Having lost some of their coordination, they attacked in sequence, but with no real strategy behind the formation. Each attack was linear and simple to read. Beat knew that some of this was due to the earring he had acquired from Shield's shop, but its benefits were now his prowess and it showed.

His leg whipped across his body and, with a loud crack, released a shining wave of energy that screamed towards all of the draconic guardians.

“Game over!”

The guardians, having no time to dodge, chose to strike the attack itself. In unison, their spears struck the wave attack, splitting it into four separate pieces the veered in random directions, crashing into the ground or tree line with a loud explosion. Beat crossed his arms, impressed at the resourcefulness of a group of NPCs.

“Not bad guys! Now what?”

The guards answered by charging through the air, spears in front, poised to impale the young player. Beat leaped out of the way and landed facing his foes, shaking his head.

Similar to the way they had before, the four draconic minions maneuvered back into a four sided flanking position, though rather than being within spear range, they had stowed their weapons and were now creeping inside of arms reach. Beat smiled as he wondered what the change in tactics would mean for him.

“You do know I’m a martial artist right? You’re stepping into my domain now. I’m not sure this is a good idea guys.”

Ignoring Beat’s warning, the four warriors brandished their claws and began swiping through the air at him with beastly ferocity rather than polished technique. While certainly lethal, the warriors’ claw would find no purchase as Beat continued to evade, block and parry each strike with greater ease than before. This continued for around a minute before Beat’s enemies began to slow down, their stamina finally running dry. Beat chuckled as he folded his arms, looking at one of them sternly despite to smirk on his face.

Beat leaped out of the surrounding, but exhausted dragon guards, glancing to his energy bar with a smirk, happy that he would finally be able to finish this ordeal, assuming they didn’t pull any more tricks. His left leg glowed that familiar pale blue as he shook his head, watching as the guards struggled to mount a defense for the attack they knew was coming. Even if they knew how to defend against it, they certainly didn’t have the strength to fend off such an attack now.

“Walp, it’s been fun guys, but this time, it really is game over.”

With a quick, short jump, Beat used a backflip to launch the wave of energy from his leg as it whipped up and over. The wave turned to be parallel with the ground as it soared towards its target. The wave crashed into the guards who could do nothing but watch their demise approach. With an explosion, the four guards were quickly replaced by a scorch mark on the ground.

That’s a good chunk of the house we want…

He swapped his weapon back out for his lucky ring, hoping it would aid him in finding more materials. He had quickly realized that becoming a better chef meant you could handle a bigger work load, but that workload required more materials everyday, requiring him to do something he had never liked doing: Material Farming. Even though it wasn’t his favorite activity, even Beat had to admit that it was still more fun than it had been in Crossreign, where you had to farm specific materials for specific things. The mere thought of having to farm like that again sent shivers down Beat’s spine.

Never. Again.

Beat felt a small tinge of guilt at the thought of murdering an infantile creature, although the reports certainly painted the creature out to be far more dangerous than its description.
