Rest: 3/3 EP Full!

Beat managed to slow his pace enough to keep Shield close by, agreeing with the desire to not be ambushed by more antmen. In a pinch, he could dodge them for a while, but with the power they wielded, even a few luck swings would be devastating.  Two monks stood in front of the gigantic ornate door. The bronze doors featured an engraving of a long chinese dragon that wove itself over each door.

“Dude...this place is amazing. I could have found the place without my map telling me it was the right place.” Beat said, gawking on the ornate doors.

The monks simply stood in front of the doors, scanning the horizon with their eyes, clearly keeping watch. It was noticeable that, despite the slight disrepair of the building, the front was undamaged by the supposedly territorial ant-men whose holes were not so far away from the dojo. Beat walked up to the monk and gave a bow, placing his left fist in his open right hand, joining them in front of himself.

“I am known as Beat. I have come to earn the title of grandmaster.”

The monk glanced at each other and moved aside, the golden doors opening slowly, the joints of the frame groaning under the weight. The interior of the building was well lit by candlelight and was designed as one would expect with one exception. The room that the doors opened to was as large as a small arena, featuring a wide open dirt floor with a golden, circular metal plate in the image of a dragon directly in the middle of the room. Beat simply stared in awe as he remained impressed by the proportions of the room.

As Beat addressed the monks, Shield happened to spot a piece of wood that did not match that of he dojo. Bending down and inspecting, it seemed to be a more exotic wood, dark and rich in color like mahogany, though he was sure no such wood existed in the fantasy world of Sword Art Online. Storing the material, he straightened up and followed Beat into the doorway, giving a slight nod of his head to the guardian monks.

The function of the inner room was clear. While most dojos would be geared towards practice, lined with mirrors to practice form, and with sparring equipment or racks of practice weapons, this building was designed for trial by combat. Taking the hint, Shield swapped out his axe for his earring and tapped Beat on the shoulder to pass him the bracelet once again.

"If we're fighting, we want to get something out of it."

Beat [500/500] [50/50]: No offensive action this round

+ Finder's keepers (+1 S&D)  -Crimson fists +1 Dmg +1 Bleed

Beat's gawking was interrupted by Shield's trade window appearing in front of his face. He blinked a few times as he refocused before glancing at the window and hitting the 'Accept' button. His fingers danced through the air as he quickly navigated through his menus to remove his hand wraps and equip the lucky wristband.

"Right, I definitely want to see what else this new loot table has to offer." Beat said, nodding in agreement as he tightened the wristband so that it wouldn't move too much during combat and distract him.

Before his attention could return to admiring the massive dojo, an NPC had approached them. He an old man with long, snow white hair and a long beard and was dressed in a white uwagi and a black hakama He bowed to each of them before addressing Beat directly.

"You are here to earn the title of grandmaster?"

Beat returned the old master's bow and nodded, his face one of determination and focus, a seriousness that Shield rarely saw from him.

"I am."

The old man looked him over carefully for a few moments and then did the same to Shield before returning his gaze to the martial artist. He stroked his beard for a few moments longer before speaking with years of wisdom behind his words.

"Very well. Seeing as how you have trained your body to deal the highest amount of damage it can rather than to absorb the strikes of your opponent, we will allow you friend to assist you, since it is your fists and your technique that we will be judging. Simply being victorious in the fight will likely not be sufficient. You must show us why you are worthy of the title. Do you understand?"

Beat nodded in affirmation, saying nothing as he fell into a zone of focus that had rarely managed to achieve before. All of his senses seemed to reaching out to attempt to perceive potential threats and quickly determine how to dispatch them quickly. It was premature, but it was good that he was ready. The old man leaped high into the air and landed outside of the arena floor, behind a solid barrier in makeshift stands where four other masters sat, all eyes on Beat.

"Your test begins....NOW!"

Four of the ornate warrior statues that stood within the dojo suddenly leaped into the air, each one coming from another corner of the room. The landed against the metal plate that made up the majority of the center arena, standing up straight from their landing. Each one stood at least twenty feet tall and featured a variety of weapons, including one who wielded nothing but its fists. They each took ready stances as the two players stepped into the ring. After a few moments, the Mogu warriors charged, striking towards Shield, knowing their true purpose was to test their resolve, not to kill them.

Opening his arms wide, Shield absorbed the hits like a sponge, glaring back at each of the statues in turn. The great humanoids shrank back, taking offensive stances as they seemed to be thinking through their strategy.

"You know," Shield said, pacing back and forth between the behemoths, staring up at each of them before shooting a fleeting, sidelong glance at the monk, "it is my understanding that part of martial arts is wisdom and making good and balanced life choices. And in that regard, I think you can already see that your test subject has excelled in the choice of his companion and the balance of his party."

He bent his knees, squaring himself with two of the statues that stood on front of him as he filled his lungs and bellowed with all of their power.

"You are all caught between a rock and a hard place, or rather, between the unstoppable force and the immovable object!"

With that, he held up his shield and brandished his hooked axe.

"So do your worst. We'll do the same."

Beat laughed at Shield's reference to their days in crossreign as the mogu warriors rained their blows down on him, paying for it in the process. It was always interesting to watch enemies fail to realize that targeting the man covered in razor-bladed armor while his martial artist friend kicked them to death wasn't a good strategy.

"Ya know? You could have just given me a big rock to break again. Though I think i would have been soloing this quest if that was all there was to it."

He leaped into the air, soaring high at head level with their foes before whipping around in an instant, leaving red streaks across each face and causing the warriors to look at him and pause for a moment before returning to their futile assault against the abominable Shield. Beat landed with grace and quickly put himself behind the human wall to avoid repeating his experience as a soccer ball.

With yet another ineffective pummeling, Shield threw their various weapons off of his body. Apparently what little strategizing they had done was insufficient to overcome the artificial "intelligence" programming of hitting the thing that's in front of them. While the system was simple, it played to their strengths, and Shield had no qualms with being cheap against mobs.

"Ah, repeating the same thing you just did that didn't work the first time," Shield said with mock-reverence in his voice. "A cunning strategy."

He looked around at each, deciding against the bare-fisted statue as a target.

"I'll let you have the bare-handed statue," he said to Beat before charging at the guardian nearest himself.

This one bore a two-handed pole arm, clearly modeled after a traditional kwon dao. He swept up the front of the statue with his axe, drawing a line that split the front open to spill forth with red pixels.

Beat smirked as he watched Shield enjoy the lack of thinking that the system had put in to allow him to simply beat on the Mogu warriors while Shield literally stood there and mocked them. It was something he understood as a matter of system balance. Without the ability to have a designated tank, he would never be able to fight anything on his own without serious risk to his life.

"Since they are obviously patching the game live, I wonder if they'll ever make the hate system a little better. They could at least force you to take the heat off of me after I attack."

Once again, Beat rose into the and whipped each of them with his glowing leg, their health bars dropping again as victory drew nearer and nearer. He wondered what the old man had meant about victory not being solely sufficient for qualifying for the title of grandmaster, but he figured he would find out once the warriors had fallen.

Again, the creatures that struck him showed themselves to be the worse for wear, their health bars slipping even further into the yellow spectrum. Off to the side, the monk continued to watch with benign interest.

What is he looking for exactly? He's made it clear that he's not in it just to see how hard Beat hits... So what's his game?

With the statues retracting their weapons once again, no doubt winding up for yet another ineffectual strike, Shield saw some of their eyes begin to shift, as if suddenly, Shield was no longer the only thing they were focused on.

Oh, no you don't.

He took a deep breath, puffing out his chest as it expanded beneath his razor-laced chain mail shirt. With the force of his core, he forced the air out, directing it at the nearest statue.

"Hey, you! Don't even think you have time to worry about kick-puncher over there!" he called out, brandishing his axe menacingly. "Unless you want to end up with a new belly button like stick-swinger over there."

He gestured towards the still bleeding pole arm wielder, and one by one, the sets of eyes returned to him.

Beat sighed as he lost the attention from the mobs. As a show of sarcastic disappointment Beat whined as he maneuvered behind the mislead warriors. He kept his speed up as he enjoyed having fun in the last few moments of the fight, knowing the end was near.

"Aww come one Shield, they just wanted to play with someone who doesn't hurt them when they try to kill them."

He chuckled as he leaped up to the warriors' waists and sunk a devastating kick into their ribcages, wishing that the game had realistic damage system to represent accurate targeting and technique, but his own account of what would happen would have to suffice as he maneuvered himself back to his zone of safety behind the immovable Shield. AS the unarmed warrior clutched it's bleeding wound and burst into red pixels, Beat's brow furrowed as he hoped that, with end of the fight drawing nearer, that they hadn't missed the point of the test. He would hate to have to keep fighting these statues until they somehow figured out the lesson they were supposed to learn.

With the first kill of the test squared away, Shield took a little bit of satisfaction on knowing that his axe had expedited the process. The other three, their health bars each dangerously far into the red, showed the resolve of disciplined warriors, or at least of dumb artificial intelligence incapable of altering its paradigm, and refused to back down.

"You would think that artificial 'intelligence' would learn at some point," Shield said over his shoulder to Beat.

Taking a step and a swing, his axe went just wide of the nearest statue, but with as slow as bleed effects tended to be, it would not be able to register in time to actually end the fight any more quickly. It was all just a formality at this point. This realization made, Shield took another moment to check in with the monk visually, but the man had not moved.

What is his deal?

“Indeed.” Beat said, nodding in agreement and watching for his chance to end the fight.

The Mogu soldiers continued their assault, using technique and finesse one would probably not expect from a typical creature of their size. The detail on the warriors was amazing and the amount of skill they displayed rivaled Beat’s own. The truly terrifying aspect, however, was the amount of force behind each blow. A light cloud of dust had been kicked up from the shockwaves that each attack produced as they resonated from the shield of the surly tank.

“Well, despite an AI that, at least this time, didn’t learn well, The strength of the mobs on this floor is certainly impressive compared to what we’ve seen.”

Beat repeated his attack from before, his glowing leg finding its mark on each of the warriors, the red mark his attack left spreading through their bodies until the stone marvels burst into red pixels as all things did when dying. Beat took a deep breath and turned to the panel of elders who were now discussing something among themselves.

“Judgement time…” Beat said softly so that only Shield would hear.

The only elder who did not seem to be participating in the hushed conversation was the one who sat in the middle, the very same one who had spoken to them before. After several minutes, the discussion ceased and the elder spoke, his voice booming through the arena.

“It is this council’s assessment that you are indeed worthy of the title of grandmaster. Though as I said before, it was not your victory that convinced us, it was how well you work with your allies, protecting each other from harm in your own way with each life important to you. The skill of a grandmaster is less important than the path to that level of mastery. Congratulations.”

Beat smiled as he pulled his menu up, noticing that the ability to put the final rank of skill into martial arts was now available. He did so immediately and admired his list of sword arts.

“Nice, this will be a huge boon to our dungeon exploration.”

Beat quickly closed his menu and bowed respectfully to each of the elders before straightening back up and addressing them.

“Thank you elder council. I will use this ability to serve the player community well.”

With that, he turned to leave, his smile now completed unhindered. The second they had gotten outside and the doors closed behind them, he raised his hand, offering the side of his fist to his traveling companion.

“Thanks. No way could I have done that alone. Seems like solo play is just not an option for dps at this level. Guess I have to keep splitting loot with you.”

Beat chuckled for a few moments before looking both directions down the path and then back to Shield.

“Alright, so where to now? I’m still interested to see more of this floor.”

Shield welcomed the familiar celebratory fist tap before following the now somewhat more accomplished DPS out to the front of the dojo. The heavy doors closed with a boom, leaving them with only the road, each other, and an otherwise unfamiliar floor.

"Where we go next is of no real concern of mine," Shield replied with a shrug. "Although, if we're wanting to delve deeper, the mountains seem the correct way to go."

While Shield was not eager to have more clicking mouth parts thrust into his face, he did recognize the value of exploration. The real secrets of the eleventh floor would be found closer to the heart of the great, winding labyrinth of ant tunnels that were centered in and around the mysterious mountain range.

With the battle now over, Shield went ahead and swapped out his gear once again, setting aside his axe for the sake of his trusty earring.

Rest: 1/3

Beat scratched his head for a moment before turning towards the mountains the Shield had mentioned and pointed forward, "To the mountains!"

Danger was a somewhat relative term when the two of them were together. With Beat's dps and Shield's ability to stop a semi by standing in the middle of a road, he was certain that, at least on the eleventh floor, they would be able to handle anything that came their way. He shadow boxed as he attempted to gauge the power of his new abilities. His strikes did seem a bit sharper, the angles more lethal and the sound his fists made as they flew through the air more cutting. He smiled, pleased with his increased ability.

"What I want now is a giant ant...thing to come up out of one of those holes so I can knock its head off."

Beat didn't mean what he had said in a sadistic way, but, despite how realistic the game was, the monsters weren't real.  He took a quick look along the ground for materials before trading the wristband back to its owner.

"I love you lucky wristband."

With Beat's skill now maxed out, there was a new spring in his step, but Shield had done his research. It was going to be a long time before he would truly realize the full potential of his attacks. Then again, he was still a ways away himself. Though his Block skill was close. He gave Beat a nod and motioned for the younger man to follow as he turned towards the mountains.

"I'm proud of you, kid," he said, giving an extra tap with his fist on the shoulder. "This is quite a notch in the belt. How do you feel?"

The smug look on Beat's face said everything, but he knew the chatterbox and knew that he was likely bursting at the seams to talk about it. As he strapped himself in for the roller-coaster of excited semi-coherence, he put his hands behind his head and looked ahead at their next checkpoint on the journey.

Shield's pride in him felt nice and Beat's face lit up in response. The older man was certainly more father-like than his own and he probably didn't realize it, but it was part of what Beat liked about the surly man. Still, their relationship was certainly more one of camaraderie and friendship than anything else. His gaze hardened as he stared ahead, watching his arms fly forth, still throwing his new punches.

"It's not that big of a difference in actual numbers or anything like that, but the ease of which I can put everything I have into each strike without over-exerting myself is incredible. It's seriously like the game downloaded more martial knowledge into my head."

After a particularly sharp straight, his ring began to glow, derailing his focus as he scanned the area for the object of value. He quickly located a rusted longsword that was tagged as a material, which was unfortunate since the design was ornate and, though damaged, Beat was sure a blacksmith could restore it. He stashed it into his inventory before catching back up with Shield, continuing where he had left off with a wide smile, grateful for the attentive ear.

"So! I've also been thinking that my sword arts are merely blueprints for the techniques, but I think they can be applied in other ways than a simple tornado kick. I'll show you if we find anymore of those ant-men!"

The flood of new information was a little frightening, but mostly exhilarating as he continued to ramble off his new theories on martial technique and form. Explaining in surprising detail how each sword art played in the mundane art form that required no energy.

Even after Beat retrieved the long sword, Shield's earring continued to glow. Nearby where the sword had settled into the dirt, there was an angled piece of something partially hidden under weathered dirt. Reaching down, he prized up the edge, revealing a large, kite-shaped section of ground that lifted with it. Sure enough, below the layer of rain-washed dirt, there was an equally corroded shield.

"Appropriate."

As Beta continued, Shield nodded along. It was a weird thought that the game was putting information into Beat. After all, his own skills so far had not manifest themselves in any real, tangible way. He could soak more damage, but if the game was actually giving him improved techniques for how to do so, it was subtle and imperceptible. More than anything, the things around him just seemed to hit less and less hard. Still, it was interesting to hear about. Once he finished his training in tanking, he might expand further into sword arts.

"So what you're saying is," Shield began before squinting and turning to Beat, adopting a slightly breathier and huskier quality to his voice. "...you know kung fu..."

Beat's enthusiasm about his new experiences since becoming grandmaster prevented him being able to resist laughing as such a joke, especially since it had come from Shield himself. He burst into laughter as he recalled the movie where it came from. He made a mock kung fu stance and began imitating the fighting one would see in the film.

"Stop trying to hit me and hit me!"

Beat proceeded make mock noises as he reenacted the scene for memory. He fully committed to the act, pretending to fight an assumed "neo" as he played the role of morpheus. The only thing that betrayed his performance was the grin on his face. He soon went into another iconic scene from the movie, playing the part of neo from the fight between himself and the agent known as Smith. He continued to perform the stunts from the movie, thoroughly enjoying himself, hoping he was at least being somewhat entertaining.

"Alright, alright," Shield said, holding up his hands to settle his companion down. "Easy does it there, chosen one. We're getting close to the mountains now."

Sure enough, as he looked ahead, the peaks had grown on the horizon, and the path was beginning to move through the piedmont, the path rising and falling between the hills and valleys as they rolled from one to the next. So far, they had been fortunate enough to not be slowed by more wandering parties of ant warriors, but if they weren't careful, there was no telling if their luck would continue.

"What would be really nice would be finding another dungeon," Shield said, peering around the nearby trunks of trees to see beyond them into the woods on either side. "Might be a nice parting gift after your little wax-on, wax-off ceremony back there."

As they walked, the mountains began to show more distinct features, and stone formations began to loom out of the midst of the trees as they rounded certain bends in the path. They were nearing the feet of the actual mountains.

Beat managed to calm down after another couple of reenactments, remembering how much he had actually enjoyed the films, at least the first two. He swiped the sweat from his brow as he looked to the mountains that they were now upon. Nodding in agreement with Shield.

"Indeed. We have a few maps now, but I think our highest is on the either floor. A second tier dungeon would be cool."

As they entered the actual mountain range, Beat could feel an occasional rumbling beneath their feet as they became surrounded by the mountain range that seemed more intimidating knowing what kinds of creature called the gigantic mountains home. If they were to enter alone, they would easily be overwhelmed if they were to venture too far. He figured it made sense that the giant caves in each of the mountains on the floor could house the floor boss.

"Well, I suppose if we're going to find a dungeon, this is where it would be."

As they rounded the next bend, Shield thought he spotted something through the trees. He crept low and made his way to the edge of the path before turning back to Beat and whispering as best he could.

"I think there are some ants headed off that way." he hissed. "Might be headed to one of their tunnels."

He made his way as silently as he could, wandering deeper into the trees until he found himself standing in front of an odd mound. There was something odd about it. Something familiar. Pacing back and forth on softened feet, he assessed the odd conical land formation. Finally, as he put two and two together, it clicked.

"It's an ant hill," he said in awe of the scope of the thing in front of him. "It's a massive ant hill. We're standing by one of their entrances."

He took a moment to collect himself before turning to Beat.

"You wanna?"
