Consuming Lucky Joe (+3 LD) [ID#75454]

Beat had just retrieved the coffee that he had been waiting to drink as the room shut them in and the trap was sprung. He scowled at the chests as he took evasive maneuvers while managing to keep the liqud in the cup somewhat balanced.

"Aw man, I was really looking forward to enjoying this!" He said before slamming the cup of coffee down, gritting his teeth as the heat burned all the way down, resting uncomfortably in his stomach.

Not cool...

He continued to assess the capabilities of the mimics, finding their appearance sufficiently intimidating. Though the twentieth floor was certainly visually appealing, the monsters that inhabited it were certainly ferocious enough in appearance and strength.

"Good lord, could they be any more frightening!? Those are straight out a nightmare I'm pretty sure everyone has had at one point or another!" He said, his words slurring together a bit due to the alcohol.

"I think I have been numb to it at this point..." Sey would reply to Beat, shivering as he would then remember the stupid screaming banshee that he had to deal with the last time that he went to "Wailing" quest. It was annoying, it was loud, it was dark, and it came out like a jumpscare. These did not feel like too much for him, but perhaps that was not supposed to become a good thing. It was odd, he thought he would not be so relaxed in the game at any point until he became an extremely high leveled player. But now the scary things in the game were not quite that anymore. It was an oddity in itself, but it didn't matter at this point anymore, considering reversal of the process is just about non-existent. With that said, he would then begin to look around, feeling his vision slur a little bit from the alcohol. it was not getting any better anytime soon it seemed.

As one of the boxes attempted to snap at Beat's ankles, Shield gave it a swift slice with his axe, which slammed the lid shut on the creature's great lolling tongue. It hissed, turning its focus and ire back onto the older player.

"That's right," he said, his sharp, dark eyes trained onto the squirrely mimic that has tried to get a nip in. "Nothing to see over there. If you want a meal, I'm what you're looking for."

Taking his words at face value, or at least seeming to, the hopping monstrosities converged on his location, snapping their hinged jaws and digging their teeth into their prey, again to no real effect. Even as they tried, they once again felt the sting of their target's armor more than their target had felt the oncoming attacks. They each flapped their lids open, letting out angry hisses that echoed through the small chamber.

"Infuriating, isn't it?" he taunted.

Beat looked to Sey as he mentioned being numb to the horrid nature of the upper floors. It made sense that someone who scouted on the top floor long enough would acclimate and grow accustomed to the way of things, but it was still unsettling to Beat at this point. IT was easy to keep his nerves about being on the top floor in check when he had the safety of a tank with them, but he imagined if he had been alone here, he would not feel so confident.

“I guess it will just take some getting used to. I guess we are pushing the game to reveal the next boss, so it should be testing more than just our stats.“ He said as he moved in to attack, placing himself in the middle of the horde of constructs.

“Eyaaaah!”

Beat quickly spun around with a yell, which helped to release some of the tension building up in his gut as his leg whipped up a twister and ripped at the creatures, draining their health significantly, much to his approval.

The more or less quiet Sey would lazily dash towards the boxes, his spear piercing through their cores instantly to cause a massive amount of damage to be inflicted onto them, knocking them back as his area attack had been very successful. With that done, he would then jump back in case they would counter, only to notice that they would shatter a second later after he landed. They were dead, interestingly enough. However, he needed to check for the loot since he was the one to kill them, but it was probably a good amount of loot considering how high his loot gathering ability was. He would lazily walk over towards the loot, noticing a lot of Col, a weapon, and a few materials on the ground. Seems like they hit it rich once again. He would place those in his inventory, looking to share with them when the time to do so was there. But for now, they were in a good enough state to just keep going.

The foes had been defeated, but for some reason the trap room remained closed to them. Shield couldn't make sense of it. Surely a door would need to open, either to let the players out or to let more monsters in, if this was a particularly cruel trap. However, no sooner had this thought occurred to him did four figures begin to materialize in the corners of the room.

"What on earth?" he began, but he didn't have time to question. He inhaled sharply as the outlines of four tall, zombie-like swordsmen took shape. "Come on then!" he cried out, brandishing his axe over his head and bringing it back down in front of his face. "We slaughtered the monsters before you, and you won't be any different!"

The creatures, lightly armored but heavily armed, vanished and reappeared on all sides of Shield, slashing at him in unison. He had no time to defend himself, all four blades striking deeply on the tank.

"I'll recover," he croaked, shaking off the discomfort of the coordinated attack "Focus on taking them down!"

Beat had been taking him time searching around the room for any sort of opening or secret passage when one of the monsters appeared less than a foot from him. He leaped back quickly, taking his place behind the tank as the creatures used their interdimensional abilities to coordinate an impressive attack on the sturdy tank.

"Yeah, I'd say this is a good trap alright, I just hope there isn't more after this one. I'm not made of energy sadly." He said as he glanced at his energy bar before readying his sword art, causing his left leg to glow.

The creatures' assault had left them open and Beat quickly leaped into action, spinning directly above Shield and whipping up a shredding whirlwind that surrounded the two players and cut deeply into the flash of the Shifters.

"Gotcha!" Beat said with a satisfied grin, pleased with his handiwork as he landed softly.

Sey would then follow up after the both of them, the healths of the monsters quickly beginning to bite the bullets. They were fighting a huge number of monsters, but mowing them down like they were nothing. They were destined to have this done in a couple minutes, Sey was perhaps able to confidently say that they do not even need to rest. That was saying because of his own energy bar, and he was unable to speak of any of the other two. A break would not be such a bad idea, but it would be best to get this done as uickly as they could. The quicker they put together the puzzle pieces, the better the results would be. He would strike through the cores of the monsters successfully, and so they only needed one more hit and they were done. Slowly, but surely, he felt the effects of the alcohol begin to die down, as he was gaining his conscious again.

The tall, lanky monsters were formidable, but despite their power and their slippery nature, they had put themselves in a bad enough place that suddenly, they were deep in to the red section of their health bars, close to death.

I won't drop them, but I can put a dent in one.

Once again, the shifters shifted, disappearing from their places around the room. This was his cue. They would rematerialize any moment, and once they did, he would be waiting. A moment later, a slight distortion filled his vision.

"Right here!" he called out triumphantly.

As soon as the body appeared solid, he swung, lodging his axe in the creature's head. Of course, their ability to cloak gave them an advantage in sizing up Shield and his weaknesses, so they once again struck with vigor and accuracy, failing to trigger his thorn damage.

Don't expect to get another chance, shifty bastards.

Beat's mind seemed to clear up much more in the heat of combat. A physician would probably explain it as adrenaline and other chemicals released in response to the threat of combat counteracting the effect of the alcohol, but Beat prefered to think that it was his intense level of focus right before he attacked. Each time he attacked, he entered a zone where there were no distractions and it was like he could see the battlefield from a top-down view.

"I see you. Your tricks are cheap!" He yelled as he entered his zone of mental focus. This time, even sound was dulled to a whisper as he quickly noticed that, while the creatures shifted quickly, there were indicators of when they were going to shift and where they would end up.

NOW!

Leaping into action, Beat spun once again, this time adding a second spin to launch his twister through the creatures the second they appeared. The twister ripped their bodies to shreds as it ran through them, leaving nothing but a very satisfying loot screen and a door that finally appeared on the wall in front and behind them.

"Well, that makes things easy enough. What shall we do? Do you think you guys have the energy to continue? Or shall we stop for now and have ourselves a little bit of a break?" At least he was able to acknowledge the fact that they might be lower on energy than he might have been. After all, he was the one with the highest amount of energy in the group, that was simply due to the level that he had. With that said, they might not actually need it and would like to put an end to all of this quickly. Oh well, it was their choice anyways,, he was there to get the loot and inflict a bit of damage anyways. Plus, his energy was just at the halfway point, enough to take on two more mobs like the previous ones anyways, though only with the support of the other two players. Like hell can he take the damage,  or inflict as much as the other two. His hands would then be placed in his pockets as he would wait.

"I think a rest would be wise right now," Shield said, raising a hand to indicate he was speaking for himself, though he knew Beat can't have been in any better shape with his energy expenditures to factor in. "We've already made a good deal of headway, and I'd say we've mapped out a good chunk of the labyrinth. We'll see how much information it will yield in the long run, but it's a good start."

He walked to the nearby wall and took a seat, swapping out for his looting gear in hopes of finding something to supplement their finds so far. Immediately, he could see light playing off of the stone where he sat. Looking down by his hand, he noticed a part of the floor that had been covered in an iridescent moss. As he tapped it, an item options menu sprang to life, and he stored the material in his inventory with the one he had found previously.

"We'll move as soon as we're back to full. We should be good for a while then."

Beat looked to his energy bar and nodded in agreement with Shield's words, feeling as tired as his energy bar was empty. He clumsily took a seat next to his friend and pulled out three bottles of water, handing one to the tank.

"Not that I had any illusions about how much work scouting at the top would be, but man, this is intense! As nice as the sky on this floor is, the threats at this level are far more intimidating." He said, taking a large swig of water and offering the other bottle to his fellow damage dealer.

"Drink up, thirst and hunger are a thing, even if our energy comes back and this guy keeps out hitpoints unharmed." He added with a chuckle, hoping to learn more about their fellow frontliners.

As he continued to offer the hydration to Sey, his ring became suddenly warm, letting him know there was something valuable nearby. A few moments of searching revealed a small pack resting against the wall next to him. The pack contained supplied of little value save for a golden compass, which seemed to have a material tag. Beat happily stashed it away as he took another swig of water.

"Not a problem then. It does not seem like we are able to turn our backs anyways." The snow-haired player would explain, looking around to see if there were any incoming monsters. His head would then nod as he realized that there was nothing coming for them right now, and so he would let his guard lower. As the drink was handed, he would notice that Beat himself began to chug down a hearty amount of it, confirming it to be real. A certain healing paladin told him to be careful at all times with the drinks offered from anyone. So he would then begin to take a small drink as well. Even better, his inventory did not have to take a bullet in the process as well, making things far easier for him to handle as well. "A good drink." And it cleansed himself from the inside of any heat, making the relief all the sweeter as he would then place the cap back onto the item.

As Shield stashed the moss away, only half of it vanished from the floor. He tapped the remaining portion of it and stored it away as well, lifting his eyes to see the bottle that was offered him.

"Thanks," he said, accepting the drink and uncorking it to drain its contents in one long, rushed draft. He sighed as he tossed the bottle aside, watching it shatter into polygons on impact. "That's one thing I always forget to factor in. I'm focused on the battle numbers, I forget about the people those numbers represent until everything is in motion. The curse of a strategist, I suppose."

He leaned his head back against the stone wall, letting his eyes close for a moment as he took several long, slow breaths. He and Beat had only been actively pushing towards the front lines for a matter of months, but here they were, finally catching up. This was usually the part of the story that you feel will never come until it just happens. That was how this felt.

Beat took another swig from the bottle, finishing the contents from the container which caused the bottle itself to fade into white, luminescent polygons. He listened to Shield and laughed as he recalled something from their lives in Crossreign.

"You know, you did have a reputation for being ruthless and cold in Crossreign. I got a lot of guildies from you when they decided that wasn't for them." He said as he rested the back of his head against the labyrinth walls and closed his eyes, allowing his breathing to slow and the drunkeness to take hold a little more as he calmed down.

"But then again, that mind got you to the top with me. Video games are made of numbers, no matter how much I like to ignore that fact...say..." He turned his head and looked to his brother in arms, "You've mentioned that you're a statistician in the real world. What do you do with your skills? Where do you work?"

Beat knew that Shield was often a private person, but he was curious and his inebriated state allowed him to be brave enough to ask. Worse case scenario, Shield told him to mind his own business.

"The numbers don't seem to have us really hurt in the end anyways. As long as we make it without any deaths, i don't really care how much I have to lose. Though.... I'm pretty sure you mean with deaths involved." he would place his spear up once again as he would shift his eyes around, looking for monsters in case they were around simply due to this being a heavily populated area. The fact that they were able to obtain this much distance was amazing. Being a frontliner threatened to be a difficult task, but they were cruising through it as if it were nothing. "Well guys, looks like my energy is up. How about we go for another round of monsters or so? We need to get the floor boss quickly, we have been stuck at this floor for nearly half of a year, not the best progress I have heard compared to the other floors..." With that said, he would place his spear up and ready for combat.

Shield nodded, making to stand, but even before he had managed to rise to his feet, he could see that his earring was continuing to glow, indicating that there were more collectible somethings nearby. The stone under his hand felt uneven, and as he looked he saw that it actually seemed to be a flat fragment of stone with a blue streak down the middle of it.

Silver ore maybe? I mainly find iron, but we are on a higher floor.

"I worked at a university with the psychology department," he replied. "Though I had a few small classes, my main focus was on research and analysis."

He shrugged to himself, tapping the item to bring up its menu and storing it with his other things. Standing up properly, he dusted himself off and brought up his menu to trade out items, equipping his shield and his axe.

I'm ready to move as soon as we're set," he said, looking at Beat to check his preparedness. "I feel like this section of the labyrinth is largely cleared, if things haven't respawned. That's a good sign that we can move on to the next section."

Beat's gaze met Shield's as his energy bar dinged, evoking an excited grin from the martial artist. The moment where he knew he was ready for more action was one of his favorite moments in any adventure. His ring notified him of one last treasure that had remained hidden in the pack he had found from before and he quickly rummaged through it and retrieved the last golden egg from the goose.

"Nice! Should make a tasty meal!" He said happily as he stashed the golden egg material into his inventory and stood up carefully, the booze still sapping a large portion of his coordination.

His footing solid once again, Beat smacked his fists together, pumping himself up for the finale of the labyrinth, excited to be able to say he helped find the floor boss. He looked to Shield again as they began to walk onward.

"It's finally here Shield. The moment we push the frontlines. One floor closer to home..." He paused and looked to Sey confidently "And we'll make sure it doesn't take another six months next time."

Sey would nod his head to the both of them, it seemed like they all had a form of energy now. With that said, he would then place his spear up before shifting his eyes over to Shield. “Hey Shield, you are the tank. I think it would be best for you to take the lead. If there is an ambush, you can take the impact really quickly, then both me and Beat can take the chance to capitalize. Or if you are feeling lucky enough, you could try a stab at it yourself.” The snow-haired player would explain, showing the options they had as of currently. If he were to take impact from the monsters, the amount of health he may end up with will not be a pretty sight to witness, and First Aid worked on others, not on himself, so that plan was thrown out of the window. It was the best plan he had anyways, not really many other ways to go about it.
