Shield listened to the conversation, content to do so for a while without speaking. He had already been vocal enough in strategizing the quest so far, and he knew how much of a chatterbox Beat could be, so he saw no need to talk over him for the time being. He glanced around, seeing if he had perhaps missed any useful materials, but he knew that his earring would have started glowing by now if there was anything of use.

In the mean time, something about the new set if buzzing sounds discomfited him. He remembered the drone of the queen from before. This was low pitched, but not quite so low. Was there more to the quest than simply minions and the queen now? After all, if someone took the time to make a part two, it seemed odd that it would more or less be a carbon copy of the first with higher leveled monsters.

Jonathan stood back up as his energy refilled. Beat had a bit more to wait, but he would be fine in a second. "Alright, well let's go show the queen who is the real boss. Who's in charge" He joked a bit to lighten things up. He figured these two would be just goofing off all the time, but no. They were one of the most dead serious partners ever. Totally unlike he and Itzal used to be. With he and Itzal, everything was about exploring, getting better, and just to enjoy themselves. Beat and Shield were devoted more serving the frontlines, and to do that, they had to become much stronger. They were not too far from he though... so he was a bit scared about that. "Alright, Shield. You lead the charge in and get the howl on it. Beat and I will then charge forward and start finishing off the mobs that stand in the way" His plan was probably rusty, and they might have had a better one, but he felt he was contributing at least a little bit.

Beat’s brow furrowed as Jonathan ignored his question entirely. As talkative as Beat could be sometimes, particularly when he was drunk, Shield rarely ignored him and often indulged him, much to their mutual benefit. In the event Shield truly wished to remain silent, he would simply tell the younger player if he was truly not in the mood to talk. Fortunately, Beat’s inebriated state made him exceptionally forgiving and it made it easy for him to brush off the transgression.

Even more non-talkative than Shield…must be a tank thing…

The smile quickly returned to Beat’s face as his energy bar finally reached its maximum value, indicating that he was once again ready for combat. He hopped up on the his feet, only staggering slightly, a feat that Shield would be able to appreciate.

“Sounds good, let’s swat some flies…bees…loot piniatas…yeah. Hehehe” Beat said, amusing himself with his own drunken antics which caused him to occasionally snicker and chuckle to himself.

Shield nodded to acknowledge Jonathan's course of action. Conversely, he chose not to acknowledge anything that Beat had just said. The plan was standard practice for their party, more or less, with a few exceptions when the damage was low and speed was key. This was no exception to the rule, so it was exactly the right call. Still, the more Shield listened to the low droning of the creatures to come, the less he was sure about what they were.

Venturing onward, all it took was another turn of the honeycombed corridor to find the source of the heavy buzzing. A minion like those they had already fought hovered in their path, but behind it were four yellow and black striped monstrosities. Their very limbs were barbed, and their bodies were fat and hooked forward underneath so that their jagged stingers faced forward, at the ready.

"Show time," he said before inhaling deeply, Shield pressurized the air in his lungs and released it in a torrent of force. "I hope you creeps are as strong as you are ugly, because the last swarm we fought got smeared all over the hive!"

The bees were on the attack before he finished spitting out his challenge. The minion was jostled by the force of the howl, veering off course and missing altogether. The three behemoths were hefty enough that his howl did not phase them, staying true to their course and slashing with their sickle-like appendages. Shield's health dropped a little, but not far enough that he wouldn't immediately bounce back, and as a result, the big bees no longer had pristine health gauges either.

The tank waited for a second, hearing Beat mutter something over there to himself, appearing to be drunk or something. Even he had to chuckle a bit. Jonathan waited around and watched as another bee minion flew out of the large hive. 'Well, this should be a piece o' cake!' Then it was followed by larger, nastier looking things. This things were a dark black and yellow, with jagged sickle blades for stingers. Shield howled beside him, and they charged him, bringing him down quite a bit of health. Jonathan grimaced and charged forward himself aiming for the closest of the bee minions. Buzzernaut A. He slashed across its body and it gave him an angry look, but the blond was already retreating behind Shield. His mitigation was not the best, but he was doing great, and he dealt quite a bit of thorns damage.

Beat watched as the bees laid into Shield's health with impressive results. Even when a player's health bar regenerated the damage dealt, anyone could still see the proportion of health taken for a moment before the regeneration had a chance to kick in. Beat always paid attention to this detail to gauge how the fight would go and it was almost always good news, this fight included. Still, he couldn't deny how intimidating the stronger minions appeared, grateful that they hadn't snuck up behind them and attacked someone other than Shield.

"Alrighty! Same song, second verse!" Beat cheered as he ran into the middle of their enemies' formation and hopped into the air burying this heel in each of the insects' sides. The force was certainly different from their last encounter and managed to send them tumbling away through the air for a few moments before they could manage to correct their flight.

"A little bit louder and a little bit worse!" Shield chanted in response to Beat.

Although the rhyme itself was childish at face value, the cadence of his reply was almost military. He weighed into the buzzing mass of the bees' line, slashing with his axe. Although the weapon failed to trigger any extra damage, it put him directly in their space on his own terms.

Just like chess. If you ever get stuck playing your opponent's game, you're in trouble.

Forced to change tack, the bees attempted another volley of slashes with their forelegs, but despite doing considerable damage once again, they were unable to escape without  taking a little punishment as well. There was no small amount of satisfaction in stinging back the stingers, and for once, he let a little bit of that satisfaction bleed onto his face.He cracked an actual smile at the justice of the whole thing.

So many memories of fishing stingers out of little arms and shoulders. Now you can feel the pain too.

Jonathan watched as his two allies battled the bees. Beat dealt extraordinary damage for using such low of a sword art. Shield dealt quite a bit with his thorns, even those were quite debuffed now thanks to the large amounts of health. Jonathan looked down at his own weapon and stared at it decidedly. "Let's go" he charged forward with his sword, the curved blade striking his target bee. After a few quests, the tank targeted the next monster on his list. He moved through his sword art, his weapon gleaming a bright blue. After he finished his sword art he retreated back behind Shield, knowing Beat would strike and then the mobs would begin to come back after them. Shield was a pretty decent tank, and to be honest it scared him a little bit. The man would soon be better than him at this rate. Jonathan could not keep up with his ability to power level like that.

Beat grinned as Shield indulged his battle cry by finishing the verse. For Beat, battle was an exhilarating experience and so he always did his best to enjoy himself. The more difficult battles made it difficult to be relaxed, but those fights offered their own unique source of enjoyment.

“Alright, a couple more should do it.” Beat said to himself as he readied himself for attack. The bees were coordinated, but their assault was repetitive, leaving much to be desired as it was entirely too predictable.

“Nice one Jonathan. You hit the last one just like that and I think we’ll be able to wrap this up pretty quickly!” He said as he leaped in and whipped up yet another twister that managed to leave lasting cuts on the insects, slowly draining their health.

“I wasn’t sure insects could bleed…I guess in a world with status effects, you just have to suspend your disbelief huh?”

With bleed already triggered and Beat's damage continually drawing more attention from the buzzing baddies, Shield needed to take a moment to remind the enemies who their real target was. Squaring up his feet, he took a deep breath and belted out a challenge to draw their attention and their anger more squarely onto him.

"Hey, bug brains!" he called out in his typical howl format, just in case there was any doubt who or what he was shouting at. "Don't you worry about the kid! He's not the one who keeps stinging you back every time you go to sting. Doesn't that just eat you up inside?"

Every once in a while, the AI seemed to exhibit almost human like tendencies like fear and anger. He was sure this was just a trick of aesthetics for the sake of immersion, but it was impossible to say for certain. Either way, insulting them was more fun than just yelling, and either way, it worked. Their attention, and their stingers, were drawn to Shield, who once again soaked their damage and turned it back against them.

Jonathan watched as Beat attacked with great force. His attacks along with Shield's thorns were doing massive damage to the bees, and each of them were doing more than he. He might even have to reconsider thorn for the next tier. That was a lot of damage inflicted on them over time. Beat spoke up, jarring him out of his mind. He mentioned attacking the last one and Jonathan nodded. "I am on it!" He charged the highest bee in health. His blade lashed forward, red lines appearing all over its body. He sighed and backed away and said, "I am afraid I did not make it so that bleed would finish it off." He sighed once more, and then slammed his fist into his forehead. 'STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF! THIS IS WHY YOU ARE GETTNG BETTER!' Jonathan wondered what Beat would do next.

“Nice shot!” Beat cheered as Jonathan dropped the final insect low enough to be finished by Beat’s next attack. The seamless teamwork that Shield and Beat displayed always made combat enjoyable for the young martial artist, but he was quickly realizing he much fun he had adapting to the different playstyles of the various players that accompanied them on their adventures.

It’s really too bad this game isn’t just a game anymore. It’s still fun, but now it’s actually just real life.

Beat grinned as he took off towards the now staggered bees. AS he grew close, he performed a backflip high into the air, whipping his leg at them as he turned over, sending a shimmering wave of destructive energy towards them. The wave of energy exploded on contact, uitterly destroying the bees and prompting a disappointing loot screen to come up.

“Pfft, hardly worth our time…” Beat said as he scoffed, dismissing the screen.

With the most recent batch dispatched, Shield swapped out his items so that he could use their respite to search. Unlike the previous battle, he did nor press immediately forward. They had come far enough that he felt an encounter with the boss was inevitable if they pressed much further. Although he could easily push forward, he knew that Beat's energy was a bigger concern than anything else.

"How's everyone managing?" he asked, taking a look at the party display in his HUD just to make his own assessment. As expected, Beat's energy was low, which more or less answered the question for him.

My damage certainly won't be consistent enough to count on in the coming fight. We'll have to let Beat call the shots on whether we're good to go or not.

He leaned his back against the honeycombed walls, trying not to let the incessant droning invade on his mental state any more than it already had.

Jonathan watched as Beat charged forward. His last few blows finished off the bees and Jonathan smiled as it did. It was fun to pair up with different players. Itzal was best paired with him, bt after so long of pairing together, the two usually knew what the other was thinking. Jonathan probably knew the man more than Kasier. Shield asked them how they were and Jonathan nodded. "I am fine. I would give Beat some rest before we move on though. there might be a chance the Queen spawns a few minions with her" The blond sheathed his weapon and looked over at Beat. He did an exceptional amount of damage, and seemed to have a little fun with it actually. "I might have to find a better weapon or something. If I can't start dealing enough damage, I will just have to go with DoT. The blond laughed and looked over to Beat.

"Needing a rest if that queen has as much defense as the quest details says she does." Beat said with a chuckle as he took a seat next to Shield.

He found it difficult to relax with the violent buzzing surrounding them and it was beginning to wear on him. He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths, slowing his heart rate and letting his body cool off a little bit before opening his eyes again, the buzzing having slightly less of an edge to his ears. He looked to Jonathan, returning the paladin's gaze with a friendly smile.

"Yep, that's what this guys does!" He said, thunking Shield's armor with his knuckles before continuing, "Though you still do more damage than he does! I have a feeling that has a lot to do with your level though."

As he finished, his hand rested on a sticky piece of honeycomb that had broken away and had been lying on the floor. He stashed the object in his stash almost more out of spite as he struggled to find a good way to wash his hand off.

"DoT is one solution," Shield agreed with a nod. "In general, finding sources of damage that bypass armor is key. Having thorns along with flame aura, or even just a potion of immolation, is another helpful little tool. I've even been known to use alcoholic items less for their damage and more for its lowering of evasion."

He leaned back further into the wall and tried to shut out the constant cacophony by closing his eyes.

"Tanks that are still building out their tree can't afford a lot of SP dips into damage related skills, so you have to find ways around it. Things that bypass reductions are always going to be the best bang for your buck, so to speak. Not that some weapon skills would be a bad investment."

His eyes opened again, and he stared at the honeycombed wall opposite him.

"Hey, there's a question that I've been pondering for a while," Shield said, his memory jogged by focusing on the opening and closing of his lids. "While we're in here, our bodies are more or less paralyzed by the Nerve Gear, right? And what we see is determined by what the Nerve Gear shows us. So when we sleep, do our eyes actually close, or is our Nerve Gear showing us a black display while our eyes remain open?"

He shifted his gaze down to his hand and flexed his fingers. While he saw his fingers open and close, and although his brain tried to tell him they were his, he forced his mind into a state of awareness, remembering that these were just pixels, and he had no true connection to them.

"I'd like to think they close while we sleep. After all, they can't be completely paralyzed while we're in here, or our eyes would dry out from never blinking. Still, it's odd to think about. Our eyes and eyelids are our only connection to our real world bodies."

2/3 Energy Regeneration

The blond nodded as Beat said he would need some time before he fought the queen. Jonathan placed his hand on the hilt of his dagger walking forward to his party members. Beat mentioned that Shield took quite a bit of damage, but he dealt more damage. "Perhaps, my level does not appear to be too much higher anymore. When T3 comes along, I am seriously thinking about getting some thorns. Or if I can get my hands on a flame Aura enhancement, that would be nice too. If I can, I might be able to get Shield something with the Flame Thorns enhancement." Shield went on about how tanks could not afford to go into much tanking skills, but Jonathan had to disagree. He was already at max mitigation, he would be getting his damage up a little before finishing out his Battle Healing Skills. He had tanked the last boss at level 35. He was not too far from level 50, he just needed to keep working. Then, Shield asked the strangest question, and Joanthan turned and gave him a look of confusion.

"Where does that even come up from man? I mean it makes sense but... Oh crap. We would still.... Alright, now you have me thinking. How are we alive. I mean, we still use the bathroom like normal right? And, our minds think we are intaking nutrients, but are we really?" Jonathan shuddered about the thought. I am probably in a hosptal by now. Father has a lot of money to throw around, and keeping me sustained would be a minor task.'

Beat looked at Jonathan’s level and nodded, “Hmm I guess not. Just a difference in build preference I suppose.” Beat said, somewhat agreeing with the notion that damage was not a bad way to go, even if one was a tank. Specializing forced you to rely on others, but it was no secret that trying to push the frontlines as a solo player was an arduous and dangerous journey.

The more intriguing part of the conversation came up once the state of their bodies in the real world came up. He rarely thought about the world outside of Sword Art Online, so it was a bit of an effort to switch gears in his mind. He saw little reason to worry about the world he preferred to forget about, as long as he was still living.

“Well, I’m pretty sure our eyes close once the login process completes. We’re not looking into a screen once the system takes our mind and puts it into a virtual body.” Beat paused as he considered the second part, “and I assume we’re all in a hospital or hospitals somewhere. That’s the only way I can see all of us still being alive after all this time.“

"Is that what they did? Good grief, I had almost forgotten what the blasted things look like and how the optics worked," Shield said, having to force himself to recall exactly what the NerveGear did to a player from back when they first logged in. "I guess that dates me a little as a gamer. I'm more from an era when even virtual video games still used your eyes for the graphics. I suppose that raises even further questions, though. Since it's just activating our brains rather than showing us visual data, does it do everything shorthand and just tell your brain 'this is a tree,' and then give you basic dimensions and let your brain fill in its own concept of what 'tree' looks like?"

He closed his eyes and pressed his palms against his closed lids, trying to sort out the new set of questions this raised.

"Although, I doubt that's the case," he said with a frown. "Food doesn't taste like it does in the real world. There is no soy sauce and no fried calamari. It's all fantasy based foods and flavors that make no sense. If they were going off of mental shortcuts, that wouldn't be an issue... unless they were trying to avoid situations for people who had never tried specific foods. If there was no data for the brain to pull from, that would create issues."

Jonathan listened as Beat added an important detail to the conversation. They had closed their eyes. Jonathan thought to the launch, but it was all fuzzy to him. He was angry at his father, and his father had tried to make back up for it, but it had failed. Jonathan had only done it to get away from his father, and now he had. He shook his head with resurfaced anger and focused back on the conversation going on. Shield was talking about food now. How much had he missed? He spoke of that food here, did not taste the same as the ones there. Jonathan definently understood that. The chef, Guiani made the finest foods he had ever eaten. They tasted amazing, even if it was all most Italian. "I wondered if we could replicate the taste if we did a little research.... Anywho, we should probably advance on the queen. I mean none of us are chefs anyways" He looked over at Beat and chuckled. "Just kidding, man." He had not had this good of a laugh for a while. when it came to adventuring with these two.
