[PP-NK-F11] Lost in the Labyrinth

Recommended Posts

When the feeling of eyes on her began to wash over her, Teion glanced to the dark-haired player. She blinked at his question, taking a moment before giving a thoughtful look. "Both?" She tilted her head slightly, as if confused by her own answer. Her hands curled around her axe, the handle of her weapon resting against her thighs and parallel to the ground. Her foot moved slightly when she shifted her weight, and the feeling of something against her boot had the blacksmith looking down at the object. Picking up a smaller piece of crystal and depositing it into her inventory, Teion returned her attention to Beat. "Mainly damage. But I needed something for finding materials, so..." The explanation for her investment in the Search skill trailed off. The woman let the sentence hang in the air, giving brief glances to the other two party members to make sure she wasn't missing anything important.

@Soredell

Beat nodded, his ring vibrating to indicated something of value nearby. Sure enough, to his left rested a chunk of amber that he happily removed from the ground and stashed away into his inventory.

"My build is pretty similar. I've invested in some items to help my endeavors in that area, but my focus is damage." He said, drawing the parallel to Shield and Teion with how matter of fact and short spoken they tended to be. Beat wasn't bothered by this fact, however, since many gamers tended to be less social by nature. Beat himself was more short spoken in the real world than he tended to be inside of a video game, but he wondered if he would return to being his old self in the real world if they ever managed to escape.

"I suppose once I finish getting everything I need for damage, scouting skills make the most sense. I could go tank and just become a pure combat build, but with that guy over there nearly always by my side, I usually don't have to worry about that too much." He said, ending with a chuckle after gesturing towards Shield.

Soredell watches his HUD closely, watching the energy bar slowly continue to fill until finally it's completely filled, indicating that he's ready to go again. He definitely feels a bit more energized than before, which will be good for when the group faces more mobs down the line. He continues to quietly listen to the conversation currently going on between both Teion and Beat, his eyes occasionally shifting over to @Shield, silently pacing around the room. Maybe he was checking to make sure the area they were in was secure and wasn't in any danger of surprise ant swarm attacks? Maybe he was just thinking about something and he just paced when deep in thought? Maybe he was just thinking too deeply about it, shaking his head to disperse these needless thoughts of his. He continues to listen to the two make small talk, thinking to himself what a good build for him would be. Perhaps a glass-cannon/scouting build? That'd be a role he could see himself fitting into.

@Beat @Teion Whoever is able to post next, go ahead. Post order is only static within combat, and since this thread is over a month old now, the quicker we can post the better.

Shield saw Soredell's energy finish replenishing. Although Teion's and Beat's were both a little ways off from full, it was near enough that Shield felt it was time to start moving. He gave Beat a nod and called out to the others.

"We've had time to rest," he said, pointing to his display. "We've still got a couple of fights left to finish though, so I say we push forward."

He made towards the exit, trying to forget his unease about this now being their only available path. Many of the paths leading up to the hatchling chamber had, after all, required them to drop down to the next section of tunnel, making the path back more or less unscalable.

I suppose that's all well and good. That's the case with the more advanced dungeons. Once you're in, the only way out is either to teleport or to defeat the final boss. With how we've managed so far, I doubt we'll have issues with the latter, which means avoiding the necessity for the former.

"Mm," Teion mumbled an acknowledgement of Beat's side of the conversation. She didn't have much to contribute in return, and the woman soon felt as though she might be coming off as rude or uninterested. Silence had fallen after the martial artist's last statement for only a few moments, in which Teion tried to think of something relevant to say. Luckily, the brunette tank that Beat had waved towards spoke up instead, calling out to the three damage-dealers half-suggesting and half-commanding them to keep moving. The blacksmith had no objection, as a sideways glance to her HUD showed that her energy level was back to full. 'Just in time.' She thought, lifting her weapon in front of her and following after Shield. Finding their way out of this dungeon was proving to be an endeavor all on its own, although their leader seemed to have an idea of how much more they needed to do in order to find an exit. Despite her curiosity, Teion didn't ask any questions on how many more monsters they would have to fight, or any other specific objectives he knew about. He was the tank and seemed to know what he was doing, so she would follow along and fill her role as a DPS.

@Soredell

Beat looked to Shield and nodded in affirmation as he looked to his energy bar, smirking as the last bit of energy filled his bar, evoking a small 'ding' from the interface. He stood up and opened up his inventory, retrieving a small cup of steaming coffee and taking a sip, smacking his lips as the hot fluid warmed his insides.

"That's good coffee! Should make these last few fights a little more profitable too." He said, taking another gulp of the refreshing beverage as he gestured for Shield to lead the way to continue their journey. He would follow next to his travel companion, humming to himself as he took the last drink from the cup, tossing the fading cup into the air and making sure the buff had applied properly. He knew items never failed, but something about the way things worked in Sword Art Online always made him feel the need to double check on certain things. v

Soredell was long ready by the time @Shield gave the group the signal to continue on with their journey. That would probably be because they all had higher energy reserves than he did, and took longer to refill a larger pool. As if Kayaba could measure one's energy in a numerical sense. But then again, that should really be the last thing on his mind, figuring out the logistics of measuring one's energy or well-being with numbers. "Sweet. I'm good to go as long as you guys are." he says to the group, although he has no doubt in his mind that the group is ready for whatever may come next. For now though, their main mission was finding a way out of this dungeon. As far as he knew though, using a teleportation crystal, which he had none of, or defeating the boss at the end of this dungeon were the only two ways out. He briefly wondered if it was possible to simply leave the dungeon if you had simply dropped into it instead of entering it properly. If he could, that could make for some helpful but potentially dangerous grinding.

Shield turned the corner of the passage and found himself at spear point. Four ants in dark, chitinous armor stood to block their way, each of which bearing a shield that seemed to be shaped from the exoskeleton of an ant's thorax. Despite being at a positional disadvantage, there was little choice in the matter. He had to take the focus away from the other players and hold it there.

Gasping with all of the power of his core, he inflated his lungs and hurled sound in the ants' faces, driving them back with the force of his howl.

"Look at the big brave ants, hiding around corners to surprise the intruders!" boomed his voice, shaking a layer of grit free from the ceiling of the earthy tunnel. "It's appropriate that ants are invertebrates because you're clearly all spineless cowards!"

Four glinting flashes in the dark, and four spears slashed across Shield's neck. In the real world, any of those blows would be fatal, but in a world governed by numbers, these foes barely had enough clout to scratch the surface.

Teion's eyes drifted around the cavern as they walked, mentally reminding herself to stay alert. The hatching of the eggs around them seemed to have stopped some time ago, but they were most likely just put on a timer; if they lingered for too long they might find themselves caught up in another round of combat against the swarming insects. Following after Shield and beside the other two party members, the violet-haired blacksmith held her weapon at the ready in front of her in preparation for the next battle.

She didn't have to wait long. Shield had just begun to turn a corner that would lead them back into more narrow underground passages when his stance quickly shifted to greet an attacker. Though Teion's view was partially obstructed by the terrain, she clearly spotted the multiple spearheads that shot forward and sliced at the man. While the other two players would likely need to reposition themselves as well, Teion made the first move. While Shield had done well to quickly attract the soldiers' attention, the woman managed to move quickly and slip past the attackers to put herself behind the small pack. Bringing the blade of her axe to her side, the sharpened edge began to glow the familiar sky blue that would indicate a sword art. Several slashes soon trailed across the backs of all four guards, piercing through their armor and leaving pixelated red gashes behind.

As Shield and Teion joined the fray, Beat leaped into the air, performing a moonsault with a high arc, coming down on top of the group of soldiers, catching them unaware as Teion's attack drew their gaze. As he came down, into range, he turned horizontally in the air and began to spin rapidly, throwing his glowing, left leg out.

"Let's try something a little different!" Beat shouted as his sword art kicked up a strong wind while his leg repeatedly bashed into the heads of the of insect soldiers, "Oh Yeah!"

Beat celebrated as he came out of his spin, landing safely as the soldiers reeled from his new use of the familiar sword art. He looked to the party as he repositioned himself behind the tank, a proud grin on his face.

"Nothing sweeter than when your new move lands all crispy like that!" Beat said mockingly towards the soldiers, who were now recovered and refocusing on Shield.

Soredell followed the others as they continued their little adventure through this Labyrinth. He took up the flank of the group. In hindsight it may not have been the best idea since they could be ambushed and he is the weakest in the group. However, he had buffed up his evasion, and it helped that he was naturally fast. He could (hopefully) easily maneuver out of the way, which would be more than enough time for the others to notice and wreck havoc on whatever tried to mess with the group. He didn't have to worry about being ambushed from behind, as a squad of ants made the first move, attacking Shield. After he was done drawing their attention and aggro, he let the others move in first for their own attacks, following close behind. While Teion and Beat maneuvered around Shield to get within striking range of the ants, Soredell decided to get creative, running straight towards a nearby wall, before jumping onto it and propelling off it, and unleashing the familiar sword art Gen Getsu on one of the ants before hopping back behind Shield and out of striking range of the ants.

They had not been in combat terribly long, but the guards were already well into the red, especially with the focus that Soredell had placed onto one in particular who was currently in the process of bleeding out some of the very little health that it had left. With a nod, Shield made the assessment that they would likely not live long enough to even try to switch targets, and thus his best bet was to keep the damage as even as possible so that there would be fewer stragglers as the AOE attacks began to wear them down.

He lurched forward, throwing his shoulder into the shield of the nearest guard, attempting and failing to create an opening. As disappointed as he was, it was just as well. They were already nearing the end of the fight. It would not end before the ants had their say once again. Spears pierced his shoulders and side, the points of each cutting through his virtual flesh and leaving trails of red pixels through the air as they cut their way free. Before they could even find up for yet another attack, however, his health had already begun once again recovering, bouncing back towards the top end of its gauge. His stern, battle-focused features remained focused forward, not wavering from his original target.

"Well, so much for my attempt," he grunted, tightening his grip on his shield. "I doubt you three will have any trouble picking up the slack either way."

While the other two damage-built players made creative uses of the narrow passageway and delivering their sword arts, Teion felt a small smirk taking over her features for a brief moment. Beat seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the fight, and his choice of words almost had her chuckling at his bravado. It surprised her to see other players in good spirits during combat, but perhaps it wasn't as uncommon as she would think.

Having stayed in place behind the group of soldiers from her last attack, Teion gave a quick glance over her shoulder to ensure she wouldn't be finding herself flanked by another pack of enemies. Her light-weight armor allowed her to move quickly, even with her bulky weapon, but even so, that wasn't a position she wanted to find herself caught in. Bringing up her axe, the blade glowed its familiar light blue as she readied her sword art once more. Without a change in formation or environment to throw off her aim, a duplicated attack struck the backs of the humanoid ants, leaving another set of gashes while their health bars simultaneously drained. The woman hopped back slightly, if only to ensure she wouldn't find a spearhead through her torso should one of the soldiers choose to turn towards her. "All yours." She stated loudly enough for the raven-haired player to hear, assuming that another one of his whirlwind attacks would be more than enough to clear the monsters out.

"Nice setup Teion!" Beat shouted as he moved in to position, leaping into the middle of the royal ant guards and spining quickly as his leg extended, the sound of his foot crashing into the ants resonating through the room. The ants flew backwards as they burst into showers of red pixels, their health finally depleted.

"Not bad!" Beat said after whistling at the loot screen that appeared in front of him. He quickly moved the loot to the storage container in his inventory labeled "Party loot" and turned to smile at the others, "We haven't even gotten to the boss yet and we're already looking pretty good on loot from this little adventure."

Turning to look down the hallway, Beat looked towards Shield to make sure he was ready to continue, "I'm still ready if you guys are. I wouldn't mind finding some more loot and the combat is always fun at this level."

Thankfully Soredell doesn't have to do anymore this round, with Beat finishing off the rest of the ants with a single kick with ease, their bodies being knocked back into the air before exploding into a flurry cloud of red pixels, disappearing forever. "To easy." he says, sheathing his sword. "Although honestly, I probably don't have the right to say that considering I did jack all, just like every other combat encounter." he says, a tone of bitterness laced in what he said.

Soredell scans the room around him for anything else that may pop up out of nowhere and attack. It wouldn't be the first time. Thankfully nothing comes out at the group, giving him a moment to breathe. Soredell takes this time to stretch out his muscles, stretching his arms and legs. "I don't know why but I feel so rusty, like I feel like I haven't done much for a long time. Anyone else getting that feeling or is it just me?" he says, finishing his stretches. "Alright, how many more do we have to go through until we finish this dungeon?" he asks the other.

"You're fine, Soredell," Shield said, rotating his shoulder to stretch the joint. "Beat and I have been carried through dungeons before, and we've carried others through plenty of fights. It's part of how the game is played."

The fight having ended, Shield took a moment to examine the party stats. Everyone in the group had more than half of their remaining energy, which meant they should be good to push on through their next fight. Shield motioned for the others to follow and struck out down the passageway ahead. He did not make it far. Almost immediately, he found himself directly in front of a large, carved stone double door.

"Well, if this doesn't scream 'boss room,' I don't know what does," he said, turning to the others and giving a brief nod before pushing the door open.

The room was dark save for the sliver of light that the tall doorway leaked into the space, spilling through the opening. He stepped in, marching across the open ground until the lights of the room flared up, throwing the boss lair into sharp relief. On a massive throne at the far end of the room, there sat a giant red ant with a fat, distended abdomen. It wore a regal crown with fur trim and carried a gaudy scepter. Above its health bar, Shield read the words 'Red Queen.'

"Oh brother," Shield mumbled to himself before drawing in a breath of air and belting out with a powerful Focused Howl. "Alright, queenie! Time to meet the exterminators!" He clanged his axe against his shield and awaited her attack, but she was so fat in the abdomen that she actually failed to rise from her thrown at first.

With Shield offering words of reassurance for Soredell's self-deprecation, and Teion lacking the empathetic capacity for any such comfort herself, she stayed as quiet as always, lifting the head of her ivory axe to rest over her shoulder. She crossed her wrists over the long handle, balancing the weight of the large weapon as the group pressed forward.

She followed after Shield and alongside her other two party members in roughly the same fashion they had traveled through the entirety of the dungeon up to this point. Her eyes traveled lazily over the tunnel walls, having lost interest in the visuals of the dungeon design. As much as she needed to leave the interior of the smithy that she wasted so much time in, she was starting to grow tired of the ant-infested area.

Before they had traveled far, the party came upon a proper set of doors, and Shield spoke aloud what she assumed they were all thinking. Taking a proper grip on the handle of her battle axe, Teion gave the blade a quick twist in her hands as the entrance was pushed open to reveal their final objective.

She didn't have to wait long for Shield to draw the monster's attention. Eagerly taking her cue, Teion leaned her shoulders forward and broke out into a run. She held her axe's handle across her body, extending her right arm out to the side to brandish the blade beside her. When she had closed the gap she tore the curved blade across to the other side, sinking the metal into the queen's abdomen and dragging to cut a large glowing gash as she landed the first blow.

"Yep definitely a boss room!" Beat said, as they approached the throne. He eyed the queen with digust, judging the creature's figure, "Yuck, being royalty must suck sometimes." Battle quickly ensued and Beat followed behind Teion to syncronize with her attack. As she drew first blood, Beat leaped through the air, propelled by his charge skill, and slammed his strongest sword art into the side of the queen's head. WIth a deafening crack that echoed through the large throne room, the ant queen was tossed form her throne and sent flying into a wall, cracking the earch around the impact zone before the insect slumped to the ground.

"Damn I'm good!" Beat shouted in triumph as he watched the bosses health bar drop into the red in nearly one shot, "Every ant on this floor felt that one!" He added with a laugh of triumph as his blood began to race and raising his focus and vigor.

"If you guys are more than happy to carry me then I guess I can't complain. Hopefully it won't be too much longer until I can finally go solo for real. At least that way I'm not burdening others, with people having to carry me, wait on me, that kind of stuff." he says. Not one word that he said was a lie. At some point, he did intend to go solo, and he certainly didn't want to be burdening others with having to carry him.

Eventually they arrived in what Soredell could only assume was the boss room. He could also see this dungeon's boss, the <<Red Queen>>, keeping in theme with the rest of this dungeon. This boss must've been the queen of the hive. Kill the queen and the whole hive should die. And you get rewards for it. Letting everyone make their own attacks and actions against the boss, Soredell was up next, dashing up to the boss and taking a swipe, only to hear an audible *chink* as opposed to hearing the familiar slash. Looking back, he noticed he did nothing to the boss. This boss was clearly beyond his ability, and it was close to dying anyway, so the best option was to fall back. "I can't deal any damage to that thing, it must be too high level for me. Someone finish this queen off quickly." he communicates to the rest of the party.

The battle had barely begun, but Beat's exceptional single-target damage combined with his charge had already been enough to take the majority of the boss' health. Now in its red health bar, the queen reared back onto its hind four legs, straightening up to tower towards the ceiling. She flexed her front feet whose ends separated into barbed toes. Her mandibles clacked menacingly as she reared up and surged down towards Shield.

He swung his axe to counteract her attack, but the weapon bounced off of her armored head harmlessly. Meanwhile although his shield welcomed and easily handled the impact of the snapping jaws, one barbed foot slipped past the barrier. A piece of his health ticked away, but to his satisfaction, it was mirrored by the piece of red that drained way from her health bar, even on top of the damage that was constantly bleeding out of her from Beat's attacks.

"If either Beat or Teion can land one more hit, then it shouldn't outlive its next attack against me!" he called out grunting with effort as he threw back her mandibles and swiped at her head again, forcing her to rear back up out of range. "Last charge!"
