"Why are there so many uninviting floors of Aincrad?" Shield grumbled to the silent square of Snowfrost. "I mean, I get that it's not supposed to be a summer vacation or anything, but between lava lakes and ice plains, it's like there's no place to just sit and be human."

Even as he pondered to himself, he knew that a vacation was the last thing that he needed. There were too many floors left to conquer for him to be able to worry about rest. He settled himself on the snow-covered bench, hunching forward to allow his familiar, Norbert, more room to breathe. As was typical of his ventures on the fourth floor, he had wrapped the snapping turtle in a large holiday sweater that swallowed most of his body, save for the tip of his beak that poked out of the turtle neck.

He checked the time in his HUD. He could expect @Beat any minute now. In the mean time, he took advantage of the little rest that he would probably get for the rest of the day.

Beat emerged from a tavern, covered by a large dark green cloak that had an extra hood for his falcon familiar, who, while benefitting from Beat's Survival skill, had no love of the cold weather and would occasionally click his beak in protest.

"I know Horus, I'm not a fan either. We just find the dragon and then we're good. Promise." Beat said, stroking his familiar and sipping on a cup of hot cocoa that he was using as relief from the cold for both his hands and his insides. He approached Shield and gave his "roommate" a wave, tucking his hand back under his cloak as quickly as possible.

"I already hate this dragon more than the last three combined. Let's find the thing and kill it so we can go back home where its sad, and not cold." He said with a small smile, his cheerful nature somewhat subdued by the cold, but not beaten.

Shield rolled his eyes and nodded, not really much in the actual talking mood at the moment. With both familiars bundled up in their own respective way, Shield led the way out of town, pulling up his HUD to guide them to the new dragonling. It was more walking than he cared to do in this environment, but they soon found themselves at an icy cleft in the earth that slowly opened, leading a sharp, icy path down to the chasm floor. Shield kept his wits about them as they walked, which was difficult not to do given the inability to relax in any sense.

There at the bottom of the cleft led them to an icy overhang, wherein a medium, snowy white creature lay curled. It unfurled its wings, and unrolled itself, kicking off of the ground and taking to the air. Shield, stepping in front, filled his lungs to <Howl>.

"Alright, snowball!" he called out, shaking the icicles from the ledges nearby. "Let's get this over with. You're number four, and we're eager to get your corpse behind us on our road to the next lizard!"

His echoes died away down the chasm, just as the hatchling let out a little yip and spurted icy breath at him, freezing him in place. He couldn't move, or at least not quickly, and with a whip of its tail, Shield sustained... exactly one damage.

"Huh... that was anticlimactic."

Beat read the expression on Shield's face with a nod of understanding, being happy to clench his jaw tightly, believing that it actually helped him deal with the cold. While there was no science behind his theory, he knew that it would help him stay quiet and make the cold more bearable as they entered the chasm.

It didn't take them long to find the dragon, who immediately turned on the tank and froze him in place, giving Shield its undivided attention as Beat moved out of sight at high speed. He reappeared behind the dragon and charged his left hand with his strongest sword art.

"Too cold for witty remark! DIE!" Beat sank his fist into the back of the dragon, sending it flying up, out of the chasm and out of site, leaving a trail of red pixels as it flew away.

"Oooo that was a good one! Let's grab the gem and be done, he's not coming back."

Shield wasn't sure if he could move his limbs, but before he even needed to worry about defending himself, he could see the last of the dragon's health begin to drain away. He relaxed, or as much as he could in the cold, watching the bar drop through the red into nothing. The dragon vanished into a mass of polygons that disappeared into the ice and snow.

As soon as Shield regained use of his limbs, he closed the loot menu and gave Beat a nod, turning and making his way immediately back to Snowfrost. The walk was hardly pleasant, but it was more pleasant than the walk out of town, knowing that they would soon only be a teleport away from warmer floors.

"Home to look for dungeons?" he asked, already knowing the answer to any suggestion that involved leaving this floor. To be fair, he would answer the same way in Beat's place.

At Shield's inquiry Beat increased his pace into a near jog as they approached the town, "YES PLEASE!" He said, shivering despite the cloak and his skill which protected the numbers in his health bar without making the cold any more pleasant. Beat found this to be a big contradiction. He broke into a run once they entered the town and hopped onto the teleportation pad, "Floor Eleven!"

The snowy town quickly turn back into the familiar, gloomy town on floor eleven, where the two of them lived. He waited for Shield to come through the teleported as he removed the cloak from Horus and himself, the falcon familiar slowly stretching his wings after being chilled to the bone for so long, "Not too bad here when we come from places like that huh?" Beat said to his familiar as he stashed the cloak back into his inventory.

Horus gave him an affirmative look as he continued to acclimate to a livable temperature as they continued to wait.

With the cold behind them, Shield unslung Norbert from his back and tapped the sweater, selecting the option to store it away. While he was at it, he stashed his shield and axe back in his inventory, equipping the earring and wrist band that made up his loot finding gear.

"It's a simple matter of electrical signals telling our brains that it's hot versus cold," he marveled, stretching his arms freely without shivering. "Our regular bodies don't feel anything. And yet it's enough to ruin the whole quest for both of us."

He stretched his neck before taking to the path, but before he could take his first step he realized he had been ignoring his earring. Checking the ground, he found a chunk of iron ore which he eagerly collected and stored away.

"We keep finding ourselves in places that make us appreciate home just a little more, huh?"

"No kidding. I guess I understand that having an ability that makes freezing to death impossible wouldn't necessarily make cold environments not feel cold, but I can tell that I should be getting frostbite and yet I'm not even shivering." Beat said, removing his cloak and gritting his teeth and the increase in exposure to the elements, but feeling no adverse effects other than discomfort.

"It's just a little inconsistent. Immersion is certainly easier in a virtual environment like this and it's practically a given, but that just makes it that much more disturbing when stuff like this happens." Beat said, shaking his head and allowing himself to use his gamer brain to distract himself from the cold as they reached the town center, stepping onto the teleportation pad.

"Eleventh Floor!" He shouted, being whisked to the dreary skies of the eleventh floor. He let out a sigh of relief as he bent down and retrieved a small chunk of ore in the ground, "It's dreary, but it's not cold."

Shield nodded his concurrence, falling into step beside Beat as they wandered the floor. They knew the back ways of the floor now practically like the backs of their respective hands, and there were no shortage of spots to farm.

"That fight can't have cost you much energy," he observed, checking the party HUD to confirm his thoughts. "Wanna go hunting?"

The loot drops tended to be a little on the light side for these lower level parts of the quest chain, so now seemed as good of a time as any to supplement their income a little.

"There's that ant hill we found where they like to spawn," he went on. "I say we keep mowing them down until you need to recover energy."

The forest opened up, leading them to a flat section of the earth with a distant mound that, currently, was unoccupied. As soon as they would step into range, however, either as a function of the floor and keeping it occupied or as an easter egg for diligent players, it would begin to spawn enemies.

Rest: 3/3 EP FULL!

Beat smiled as he looked in the direction of the anthill Shield mentioned and nodded in agreement, turning to walk that way, "Sounds like fun. MIght find something nice there."

He flipped his menu and retrieved a familiar looking, wooden mug. It was ornate with a brass handle and treasure decorating the outside, "But if we're going to do that, I'll need to drink!" He said happily as he brandished the mug and thrust it into the air before downing the contents at a steady pace. He wobbled and stumbled to the side for a moment before regaining his bearings as the effects of the drink took effect.

"That's the stuff!" Beat yelled as the consumable filled his body with power as it took some of his inhibitions away. The effect of the alcohol was far from what it had been the first time he had learned to make the strongest drinks he could, but the effects were certainly still very much noticeable.

Shield pursed his lips but didn't say anything in regard to the sudden shift in behavior. He understood the necessity for the alcoholic items, but at the same time, he wished Beat could hold his liquor a little better.

It's fine. As long as nobody else is around right now, it's fine.

As soon as they hit the edge of the mound, red distortions manifested in the air which unmangled themselves into fully-sized ant warriors complete with green helmets and spears. Taking the lead ahead of Beat, Shield took a deep breath, calling out to the ants as he drew near.

"Alright, you little buggers! Show us what you're made of!" he howled, the wind from his lungs kicking up the dry dust of the mount.

In response, the ants lowered the head of their spears and charged. Shield opened his arms, welcoming the attacks, which in the end, did more to the attackers than to the target.

Beat sighed as the ants appeared and charged the surly tank, "Man, I know we came here to hunt ant soldiers, but man, there has to be something else on this floor to fight other than ants!" The martial artist chuckled as he ran directly at the group of soldiers that were grouped right in front Shield, still trying to figure out how they were the ones who had taken damage.

"Don't bother trying to figure it out, you won't live long enough to appreciate it even if you do!" Beat yelled as he spun through the air, his glowing leg turning into a buzzsaw of sorts, crashing into each of the soldiers, blowing them backwards with the force. The drunken Beat landed in front of Shield, taking a fighting pose as he admired the results of his attack.

"Never gets old. Watching their health drop is always rewarding." He added with a proud grin.

Shield watched as Beat charged in, sapping a good portion of the ants' health gauges. It was certainly a lot quicker than he would be able to do on his own. Rather, he could, though only over several minutes of swinging his axe and taking hits over and over again.

"I'll let you know if I agree after I've completed my tank build and can worry about stabbing things a little more than getting stabbed," he said, smirking slightly as he tried and failed to return one of the blows that had been dealt him. His axe sung through the air, swinging past his shoulder, failing to have connected with the soldier that had leaped out of the way.

"Bastard," he grumbled, preparing once again to take the brunt of the enemy offense.

Like clockwork, four spear perforated his body, each of which leaving little behind but a quickly vanishing and a hole in each of the offender's health bars.

"Yeah, you certainly work hard at that leveling thing. How close are you to being able to do that?" He said as he maneuvered around the battlefield at high speed, slowing down close enough to get the soldier's attention and then disappearing again. truly disappearing with sheer speed was probably impossible in this game, but he managed to create the illusion by misdirecting their vision long enough to turn the speed up the opposite direction, leaving their field of vision entirely.

"I know you like that tanky business, but I've been hit a few times, It's not a fun sensation. I'll stick to beating things up, thanks." He said, smiling at Shield as he stopped in the middle of the soldiers. Beat used his sword art to take the soldiers' feet out from under them and, with a second spin, crush their mandibles into their faces as their heads fell into his range.

"There's satisfaction in any job well done," Shield said, taking a step forward and slicing through the legs of the nearest ant. "Besides, in a game where survival is a real issue, it helps to have the skills to survive. That being said, it does mean intentionally putting myself in harm's wa-"

As he gabbed, the ants had been encircling him. The spears pierced deep into his chest, and his face showed no small amount of surprise and discomfort.

"Gah! I wasn't watching for that one," he growled. "Christ! It doesn't hurt, but it helps to have some warning before things get shoved into your body!"

He knocked the weapons away, shaking off his discomfort and returning his focus to the fight at hand. Clearing his throat he slowly let himself relax into a calmer battle stance, his shield arm loose but ready in front of him.

"That was rather unpleasant. Care to return the favor for me, Beat?"

Beat shivered as the spear dug into him, Shield's lack of total poise upon being impaled evoking a hint of concern until he looked at Shield's unmoving health bar, "Yeah, see? I am plenty happy to not have to do that. Ech!" Beat said with a final shiver before the smile returned to his face and he eyed his targets again, "Gladly." He said, replying to Shield's request.

Moving to the middle of the pack once again, Beat kicked up one of his famous twisters, lifting the soldiers off of the ground, shredding them on the way up and depleting their health bars. For a brief moment, the twister took on a crimson red hue as the pixels of the dead ant soldiers were tossed upward, into the wind.

"That takes care of that. Ooo nice!" Beat said, pleased with one of the items on the loot screen, "Mind if I take the nice one? I've been looking for a different set of gloves to handle those dodgy enemies."

"Go for it," Shield said with a nod of his head. "They're really only of use to me if I can appraise them. If you have use for it, go for it. I don't know about continuing to fight though. It's been a long day. You ready to head back?"

He glances towards the mountains where their home and shops lay. Although curling up in bed rolls on the living room floor was hardly comfortable, even that didn't sound so bad. It was something he had difficulty admitting, but he had been pushing himself hard lately. Without waiting for much as far as an answer, Shield turned and began making his way back towards home.

Beat's grin grew a little wider as he stashed the weapon in his inventory and trotted to catch up with the weary looking gentleman. Beat rest his head against his hands as he fanned his elbows out and weaved his fingers together to make a pillow of sorts as they walked. The alcohol certainly gave him vigor, but he could tell that something had Shield down a little more than a simple hard day's work.

"You alright there buddy? You usually have a little more pep in your step, even after a long day of questing." He asked, moving in front in the tank and walking backwards, taking the turns subconsciously, having traversed the route back home hundreds of times. As they walked, a low-hanging fruit from a tree passed into his view and he quickly snatched it up and resisted the urge to eat it given the material tag.

Shield managed to spot a chunk of ore on the ground. He dipped down and picked it up, not even bothering to slow down.

"Yeah, I'm alright," he said, lifting his eyes skyward, watching as it began to change colors with the setting sun, or at least with the animation playing out in the virtual sky of the virtual sun setting. "I think today just hit me all of a sudden. Nothing bad. Just a long one, I suppose."

He really didn't know how else to sum up the kind of tiredness he felt at the moment. Physically, he was not any more worn out than he had been at any other point in the game so far. Physical exertion was hardly a matter of concern in Sword Art Online. Still, it was a sensation of simply not wanting to be awake for a long time. Not a permanent sleep by any means. Just a time to reset, rest from traveling and pushing back against everything that surfaced along the way.

"I think I'll feel better after some shut eye."

Beat nodded his head and released a sigh that indicated that, while his concerns were not entirely abated, he would accept the older player's answer for the time being, knowing that pressing Shield to talk about it more would serve no purpose.

"Alright, well, I would say you need a good break. You've been pushing yourse-" Beat paused, noticing something in the trees that they had passed before, only noticing because he was facing the other direction, "Hang on, I think I see something."

He charged back the way they came until he hit a particularly dense portion of the jungle. With a swift kick, infused with sword art energy, he was able to clear a nice cone of vegetation that was blocking a large, ornate stone door. Beat walked up to the newly revealed door and, to his surprise, the door slid open, the sound of stone grinding on stone echoing down the dark corridor.

"Dude, I'm like a bloodhound for dungeons!" Beat cheered, quickly mapping the dungeon out and turning to catch back up with Shield, "A difficult looking dungeon right outside our doorstep! Lucky!"
