Shield upended a particularly ripe-smelling bucket of bait fish into the water tank that stretched to cover the entirety of the right-hand side of his shop. The once proud familiar, now simply ornamental pet, Norbert snapped at the morsels of food as they settled lazily down towards the bottom of the tank where he lurked. Stepping down off of the ladder, he made his way to the front of the shop, waiting on Beat to join him.

Just out front, he spotted a massive hunk of granulated sugar easily the size of his fist which he pocketed in his inventory before changing into his full battle regalia. His lineup had changed somewhat as of late. In addition to the now vanity cloak leftover from the fight with Asterios, he wore a suit of armor that seemed to be pieced together from different pieces of other armors, each chunk of which gave different benefits. His shield was mundane, a simple buckler from his own stock, but that freed him up to be able to wear the intimidating Manticore Mask that he had pilfered from the Arabian Nights quests as well as his Bloody Hell axe.

Beat walked through the interior entrance of Shield's shop and walked up to the tank containing the large tortoise who had just recently been fed given the smell wafting through the shop. Beat worked with food enough that the odor of fish was far from offensive to his senses, but it was still noticeable regardless. He tapped on the glass and smiled at the former familiar of his traveling companion.

"Fish for every meal and you get to be left alone most of the time, just how you wanted right buddy?" Beat said, peering at the oblivious tortoise, who largely ignored him in favor of devouring his meal.

Beat chuckled as he made he way out of the door, thumping Shield on his armor, "Ready buddy? Hopefully only a few more to go. I'm going to guess two or three probably." He said as he began walking down the earthen bridge from their home, through the canyon, swiping up a chunk of shimmering algae along the way.

As Shield and Beat made their way, a multicolored head poked its head from below the collar of the tank's cloak. Its slitted eyes and forked tongue both turned towards the younger of the two men, the latter flicking out from its mouth as it tasted the air around them.

"This is Lilith," Shield said, pointing to the bush viper's head. "Nice of you to join us, girl." The snake turned her face towards her master, flicking his cheek with her tongue before disappearing back into the recesses of his garment. "She'll become more social with time. She's already a great deal friendlier than Norbert."

They made their way to Taft, using the teleportation matrix there to take them to the seventh floor. They had slowly worked their way up from floor one. As they made their way to the spot where the hatchling was said to frequent, he wondered whether there would even be an end before floor 100. As they reached the spot indicated on the map, which took a great deal of climbing up one of the nearer mountain slopes, Shield spotted the green, scaly beast stretched out on a rock to sun itself.

He gave beat a nod before charging in. The dragon, hearing his footsteps, perked up its head, waiting for Shield to draw near. The two traded blow, Shield's axe clipping its wing as its fore claws raked along Shield's chest, though they seemed to be worse for wear than their target by the end of it.

Beats eyes opened wide as he caught a glimpse the noticeably not grumpy familiar now accompanying his faithful tank.

"Oooooh! A Snake! That's way cooler than a turtle!" Beat shouted, his smile fading as Lilith retreated into Shield's garment once again. It wasn't that Beat didn't like Norbert, but he doubted anyone could argue that Norbert was less happy in his tank with his fish, by himself than having to "swim" through the air, strapped to Shield's back.

"I'm glad this one enjoys the adventure a little more than Norbert did. Poor guy hated it on your back. Horus here just flies around when he gets antsy, a tortoise doesn't have that luxury sadly." He said stroking the Falcon's head and receiving a nearly inaudible coo from his companion in appreciation.

It didn't take long to reach their destination and Beat was more than happy the test out his invigorated body now that he had modified his armor proficiency somewhat, "Alright, here is the new and improved All Might!" He bellowed, charging forward at a blistering pace, his fist crashing into the body of the hatchling, scooping it into the air, leaving behind a red, pixelated trail of blood.

The dragon was already well into its yellow health bar before Shield even had a chance to take another swing at it. As the dragon attempted to correct its flight in the wake of Beat's strike, Shield managed to sneak in and take a chunk out of its wing. It was not much, but it was enough damage that he kept the focus more than certainly squarely upon himself.

"I'm not sure what's new or improved about it, but whatever it is seemed to work just fine," Shield said with a nod, watching the dragon work to regain its composure. "A new rank in Charge or something?"

Still miffed about being caught off-guard, the dragon whipped through the air, pelting towards Shield. It attempted to grip him by the arm with its hind legs, but it failed to make any contact, instead merely flapping around in circles, issuing high, shrill screeches of frustration.

"I think it may know what's coming," Shield said, stepping aside to let Beat have a clearer path.

"A skill mod actually. Athletics!" Beat exclaimed proudly as his gaze fell in the line the his target's, "It lets me use better form, even while wearing heavy armor."

He continued to return the gaze of the Jasper dragonling, a small tinge of pity welling up inside the young player's heart for the poor creature who had likely been hunted down for this quest many times. This was a line of thinking that crossed his mind frequently, despite the fact that he was certain that his theory about the npcs and mobs being tied to real people was preposterous.

"Alright, it think it sees it coming! Guess I should put it out of its misery eh?" Beat shouted as he charged forward, his shimmering fist finding its target with ease, cleaving through the digital creature and shattering it into the familiar red pixels that indicated the demise of anything that lost its life in the game.

He looked to his partner as ginned, as he brandished the seventh gemstone, "Another one down. They keep getting stronger each time. I wonder how tough they'll be by the end."

With the fight over and the jewel in hand, Shield gave a nod and swapped out his mask and shield for his earring and the wristband that he wore with it to increase their odds of finding useful crafting materials. He wasn't disappointed. As soon as the earring was in place, the gold wire than ran along the simple silver hoop lit up like a candle, and as he glanced at the ground, he spotted a chunk of stone with the signature red staining of iron ore. He knelt down and picked up the item before storing it in his shop inventory with the other materials that had circulated their way to him.

"Well, they may be getting stronger, but not quickly enough to pose a threat," he said, stretching his arm behind his head. The look on his face was not particularly expressive, but there still seemed to be a cloud over it, as if something was on his mind. "I've been thinking, Beat," he said, which of course was obvious. Beat had often teased him for never turning off his brain. "We had plans... but things have changed since then."

Beat flipped through his inventory, swapping to his own set of item finding gear and stashing the gem away. His brow perked up at the mention of a topic they had discussed after an earlier dragon hunting quest and had postponed for reflection and consideration. His head lifted and his gaze met Shield's pensive expression. It was indeed a topic that was overdue for discussion and Beat was glad they could finally make some headway on it.

"They have indeed...but I wonder if that should change our intentions..." He said, understanding full well the implications of Shield's words. Since their first discussion on the topic, they had finally received the overdue promotion to Sentinel with the Celestial Ascendants, but Beat still felt as if they owed very little of that to the guild. There was also Sey's abandonment at the raid against Asterios to consider.

"We still don't owe them anything, we just have a title. The nature of the guild hasn't changed." He continued as he crossed his arms, ready to listen to Shield's elaboration on the changes he had mentioned.

"Here's the problem," Shield said slowly, trying to reason through the best way to phrase his sentiments, which even to himself were confused. "We don't owe them anything specific, but there's more st stake than just what we're due." He said, turning his stony gaze to his comrade. It was not a look of anger, but Shield had often been told even in real life that looking into his face was a little like looking at a brick wall. "I feel like that reasoning falls apart in here, though. We may not be on a leash or in anyone's debt, but we're all on each other's team as long as we're trapped here, and that goes for more than just the Ascendants."

He started out at a slow pace, noticing that his Seeking Aura had yet to die down in its intensity, and he looked to the side of the trail, spotting what seemed to be a small patch of lemon grass. It would be useful for someone's cooking, or if nothing else, just to burn through in his quest for unique items.

"The Ascendants have a strong foothold here in Aincrad," he went on, his eyebrows furrowed. "Whether or not we agree with their methods or their styles of leadership, they will attract others. And, at least at first, that will be a greater number than we can attract on our own, just the two of us working together."The sounds of his feet against the ground were heavy as he trod the path back towards town. He let out a sigh. "If we're going to do the greatest amount of good, it would be best to try to take root where we're planted. Or at least that's how I see it, anyway."

Beat's arms remained folded as he considered Shield's words. It was true that, with their rank in the guild, they had the ability to affect change in line with their ambitions. Beat had hoped to see a guild started by the two of them, leading the frontlines to greatness. It wasn't necessarily glory that he had his eye on, but it felt almost like letting someone else in on the idea instead of starting it from the ground up was selling their ambition short.

"Couldn't we do just as much good if not more by recruiting our own members? There is practically no one in the guild who truly needs the benefits our ideas would provide." Beat said, looking straight at his partner, "Wouldn't the Emerald Harbingers be closer to the crowd we're looking for? They're motivated, low level and in need of experience and guidance from frontliners like us, and they're never said one thing and done another as far as I know."

Shield's countenance did not brighten any at the suggestion. While it was true that he had considered the Harbingers at one point, times had changed. His earring, still lit, continued to cast a faint golden glow on the patch of lemon grass, prompting Shield to bend back over to continue harvesting.

"I don't know about you," he said darkly as he straightened back up, "but when't the last time you've heard from Atzo?" The red-haired leader of the Emerald Harbingers, a man who Shield had mentored from level one and who had told Shield that he viewed him as a father figure, had been absent, and as far as he was aware, nobody knew why. "I haven't heard from him in ages, and I honestly don't even know if he's alive anymore. I don't know what else would be keeping him at this point... In any case, the Harbingers are in complete disarray. I wouldn't be surprised if they had disbanded altogether."

Beat unfolded his arms and stretched them over his head as he considered his reply, "I dunno..." He started, taking a seat next to a tree and resting his back against it. He always did his best thinking when he could sit and relax since he tended to fidget far less in that state, "We don't know he isn't alive somewhere, but if there is a power vacuum there, why not fill it? Either we take over his guild or, if the guild has disbanded, we recruit the guild-less player into our guild. We've already helped them before, so they have no reason to question our motives."

His brow furrowed as his mind conjured up another scenario, one darker than the proposal that Atzo was dead, "Unless the guild, as a whole, pushed too hard and the unthinkable happened..." He began to sink into a somber state as he recalled stories about entire guilds being wiped out by bosses or strong trap rooms within dungeons. The tangent of thought lasted only moments, but to him, it had seemed like forever. He quickly snapped out of it and returned his gaze to Shield, "Do we have any ideas on their whereabouts at all? Could we find them? I think at this point, I would feel better knowing regardless of what we choose to do..."

"We could find out for sure if he's dead," Shield said, raising an eyebrow as he recalled a certain spot. "There's always the monument of life. I suppose there's a twist of irony that in order to make sure he's still alive that we need to check the place that I show the green players when I first carry them."

He paced slowly along the path, turning every few paces to double back and retrace his steps. What Beat was proposing was not unreasonable, but it was potentially upsetting to a lot of the people in the picture. The Harbingers were accepting to newcomers, but from their interactions, they seemed very set in their structure and ways.

"We can at least talk to them," he concluded, shrugging and sighing. "If nothing else, we can bring it up with the paladins and sentinels and see what we come up with. There were a lot of up-and-comers at one point..."

Beat chuckled as he looked back up to the surly tank player. It was obvious that Shield's desire to stay in the Celestial Ascendants for an attempt at using the resources and people there was not going to go anywhere. The two of them had gotten into plenty of debates throughout their time in SAO and Beat had grown to recognize when he would need to be the one to accept the small concession Shield had made to his argument and take what he could get.

"Alright big guy, you win. I would really like to investigate the Harbingers issue, but you have a point about the resources we have in the guild already. No reason to squander it without at least pitching our ideas to the guild." He said before holding his arm out as Horus swooped down through the trees, looking to land on his outstretched arm. Horus affectionately pruned something out of Beat's hair before the martial artist continued.

"So then...our ideas specifically, let's hash them out so we're on the same page. How would these raids of ours work exactly?"

"Hmm," Shield hummed to himself, trying to sort out the details himself. He changed the pattern of his pacing, walking instead in a loop with Beat at the center. "Well, I think the first element is obvious: motivation. If someone isn't motivated to make a solid push, then they're better off finding their own raids, to be frank." He extended a long finger to keep track of items as he listed them. "As a second point, I think they always need to be voluntary. A player who is unwilling or unsure of their desire to be there will likely slow the group."

He paused, glancing down at his extended fingers which now had a slight glow to them. In the midday light, he had almost once again missed the indication of a nearby object by his detection earring. He glanced down at the ground, looking for an explanation, at first seeing nothing. As his eyes darted from side to side along the packed ground, they rested on a stone that had a red hue similar to that of rust of perhaps of a faint cinnabar. He bent down and picked up the stone.

Beat nodded in affirmation. They had discussed this topic at length, but it had been some time and, despite his tendency to rush into things, he felt better knowing that he and Shield were on the same page. He smiled as he retrieved a small fish treat from his inventory and held out his palm for Horus to enjoy.

"Motivation and willingness to participate is good. What about frequency?" Beat said, as his falcon familiar happily devoured his treat, "I know you're pushing yourself pretty hard to escape this place, but I know most people aren't quite so motivated."

He looked upwards as Horus lightly pecked the side of his head, clearly wanting a second treat. With a small sigh, Beat retrieved another treat from his inventory and tossed it high into the air, causing Horus to fly up after it.

"I think once a week should suffice unless interest is truly high enough to warrant more. Group composition is important too, so we'll need to make sure we're not pushing too hard unless we have to people for it."

"I'd say at least that," Shield replied, noting that as he retrieved the object from the ground that a second one seemed to be partially buried in the ground beneath it. He bent over again and dug it out before straightening back up. "If we're in a place to make a hard push for a new floor, we may double that. After all, there are whispers that we may be making harder pushes in the future."

It was a refreshing notion, though it was a conflicted one as well. Since they had begun climbing the ranks, only a couple of new floors had been uncovered. The prospect of being at the heart of a fresh surge towards the top was both intimidating and exhilarating. He knew that Beat felt the same. It was thoughts like that which momentarily pushed aside his business-like drive and woke up the inner gamer.

"Is it ironic that we're having to work to escape the thing that people use as an escape from work?"

Beat laughed as he rested his hands on his hips, watching his familiar land on the low branch of a tree and finish his previous treat, "That is kind of hilarious, It's even more funny because this sort of thing used to be the thing I did for work." Beat laughter resumed as he took his own words in. It was true that gaming used to be his job, but he had never really thought of it that way.

"You know, I'm not sure if I would say this is really work. I mean...it is...but the game mechanics and everything are still fun, even if they can technically kill us. Despite everything, this is still not a terrible life to be stuck with if you can keep yourself safe." Beat knew that Shield would have some objections to his statement, so he wasted little time clarifying, "That isn't to say everyone should be happy to be here like I am, but I can think of far worse prisons."

This was not the first time Beat had made these kinds of observations. It had been some time, and Shield had hoped that the younger man had had some sense knocked into him since then. Apparently, this was not the case. What's more, Shield did not know how many more kind words he had to offer to Beat on the matter before he would be forced to resort to other words.

"Beat, have you ever heard of the Stanford Prison Experiment?" Shield asked. He was at his most impassive, which was a skill set that he hardly used around his housemate anymore, but it was necessary to keep himself in check. "It's well known to statisticians and psychologists alike, since it's one of the most poignant studies to the field of ethics in research. Students at the university were divided into two groups: guards and prisoners, and were told to adopt their roles just to see how the situation would play out with imposed authority. They spared no expense. Both were given uniforms to suit their role, prisoners were locked up, hell, they even had actual squad cars pick them up and 'arrest' them at home."

Shield knew Beat well enough to know that he was a sucker for a good story, and as grim as the conclusion of this tale was, few could deny that the whole situation was a fascinating premise. He went on, keeping his emotions as far from the surface as possible, instead using a benign interest to color his words and the slight gestures of his hands as he spoke.

"At first, there was nothing too out of the ordinary," Shield said with a shrug. "Prisoners were fed, taken care of, but kept under lock and key. Then, as the experiment wore on, something happened that had not been anticipated." Finally, he let some of his colors show, his tone taking on a growl that denoted the weight of what was being said. "They began to truly act the part."

"Guards began actually punishing 'bad behavior,' and prisoners actually began to antagonize guards. Students were denied basic human rights: subjected to fire extinguishers as a form of crowd control, locked in closets as 'solitary confinement,' even forced to sleep naked and use a bucket instead of a toilet as forms of punishment, all of which done of the guards free volition, unprompted by the researchers. One student had to be released because he showed signs of mental scarring on the second day," he continued, each new addition cracking like a whip as he leaned further forward, furrowing his brows into lined mazes. "The experiment was set to be two weeks long. It was prematurely ended before they had completed one."

He let the tension fade as if ending some campfire horror story. Slowly, he leaned back onto his heels and turned his eyes skyward.

"That's what happens to people when they're forced into uniforms and given roles to perform," he said, looking down at his body and back up at the other player, slapping his hand to his chest. "Look at me. I'm doing it too. I'm not a warrior. I'm a goddamn stats monkey," he spat, yanking and clawing at the collar of his tunic before throwing his hands up in frustration. "You've seen it yourself. That death cult? They're not the only ones. Keeping yourself safe isn't simple, even if you're lying low. What do you have to say to the players who were killed in their sleep as players forced their hands into total loss duels? Calling this a game without including the word 'death' is making light of our situation. It's a death game, Beat. Let's call it what it is."

Beat was indeed a sucker for a good story and folded his arms as he leaned against a tree, listening intently as Shield told his story. Beat had not heard of such an experiment before, likely dues to his decision to drop out of school to pursue his professional gaming career, but the story still made sense to him. It did no seem too out of the ordinary for someone to conform to their surroundings and the role they had been given.

"Adopting a role like that...it's a means of survival...fascinating" Beat said, staring at the ground as the characters in Shield's story continued to play their roles in his mind.

Beat looked back up and into Shield's piercing eyes as he spoke, sincerity in his voice, "I'm not saying this isn't a death game, but I'm also not going to drive myself insane over something I can't control. This was a game that was meant to be played as a game, despite what it has become. The best way to beat it is to play it like the game that it is."

Beat pushed himself off of the tree and continued towards thier home, "At least to whatever degree is possible without risking actual lives..." He finished with a somewhat somber tone in his voice.
