Beat stood in the village of Friben, the suspended village that hung above the rushing waters of the white river. His hands danced through the air as he made sure his battle-ready inventory was prepared for, if his memory served his correctly, was not likely to be too taxing of a quest. Before Beat's ordeal that took him off of the front lines, He and Shield had been working towards being the first people to complete the lengthy Dragon Hunter quest line. The rewards for each part weren't much to brag about, but if one added them together, it was certainly hard to argue with the gains that could be had.

Though I doubt the reward weapon rumored to be at the end compares to these...

Beat admired the black, feathery wraps that Shield had appraised for him after one of the first quests he had done with Calrex, another high-level player. A stroke of luck, or perhaps two, he granted his Shi's Talon an additional unique enhancement on top of the one it had come with, making them incredibly formidable in combat.

Can't wait to see how these do...

"We going to talk about how you disappeared for a while there?" gruffed an all-too-familiar voice directly behind Beat. Shield stood with his arms crossed, expressionless, but with more animation behind his tone than was typical for him. That still was not saying much, and to a stranger, he might sound more bored than anything else, but Beat would know the difference. "The only reason I knew you were alive was that you were still listed as 'online' on my friends' list. We've got people dying out here, Beat."

It had only been a matter of days since the Celestial Ascendants had gathered to plan for the next boss raid. That was where Hikoru had dropped the bomb. One of their own, and a Sentinel at that, dead. Shield was over being angry about both Beat's absence and the loss of Beatbox, but that didn't mean he had put either behind him just yet. He motioned for his companion to follow him, pulling up a map of the eighth floor.

At this point in the quest line, so few players had managed to complete the missions that information was practically impossible to come by, even for those willing to pay for it. The best he had managed was some wild speculation as to a few possible locations where the next hatchling might be found, and most of that was simply due to the fact that areas seemed significant but had not been known to spawn mobs or serve as the opening to existing dungeons or quests.

I suppose it's good news that we're faring well enough to stay head of the pack. It does however add new layers of difficulty.

Beat let a harsh breath out through his nose, his eyes closing as a small grimmace flickered on his face.

There it is...

Beat had known Shield was going to grill him about his disappearance and he also knew that it was not purely out of annoyance or blame, but still, Beat found himself reluctant to address the question and decided to move onto the second question, knowing he would only be able to stall for so long.

"Good to see you haven't changed too much...but speaking of dying, how did Beatbox die?" Beat said, his tone colder than Shield would be used to, partly due to the nature of his question, but also because of the answers Beat was reluctant to divulge at the time. He couldn't say he had known Beatbox very well, but the comraderie of the frontlines still made the loss something Beat could not ignore. His fists clenched as they cleared the boundry of the village, "I've heard it wasn't a monster..."

"Beat," Shield sighed, shutting his eyes tightly as he squeezed the bridge of his nose between thumb and forefinger. "We've had each others' backs since day one in Aincrad. If you legitimately don't want to discuss what happened, I'm going to have to trust that you have your reasons."

He opened his eyes, again, pointing them at the path ahead of them rather than at Beat. He knew that putting the kid on the spot ultimately was doing more harm than good, but he didn't understand the need to mince words. Still, before he let the topic drop, he needed to say his piece.

"That being said," Shield continued, his hands balling into loose fists at his side as he focused on keeping his tone even. "At some point, I'm likely going to find out what's going on. I'd rather just hear it from you."

He intentionally withheld the answer to Beat's question about the death of their fellow Ascendant. Whether or not he got a full answer, he intended to have his question at least properly addressed and dealt with before they moved on.

Normally, I have trouble getting you to STOP talking about things. What's gotten into you?

Beat sighed and nodded in acceptance as he decided to deal with the question, his evasion not nearly high enough to avoid the inquiries of Shield, but thankful that Shield had given him an out, "It's not that I don't want to tell you...and I will...probably." Beat caught up and matched pace with his traveling partner as looked over to the surly tank, "It's just not easy to talk about yet, but...for now, let's just say I have some tension to work out..." Beat trailed off as the tension in his hands began to become uncomfortable.

Sorry old man...but I appreciate the concern all the same...

Beat's gaze become softer as he shook out his hands, finally allowing himself to relaxing somewhat, though his mood did not improve at all as he decided to move back to his own question, "So, Beatbox...who was it?" His tone was firm and perhaps a bit pushy, but this was something that he needed to know. If there was a PKer running around dealing with other players, Beat would figure out a way to stop them if he could.

"Death Adder," Shield replied, his eyes still focused. His brow lowered into a scowl, and his jaw was set. "I don't know for sure... but I think he was at the fight with Tesseleth. The one with Macradon and Calrex." His brought his leather clad hands up in front of his chest, kneading his palm with the other thumb as he went over the details in his mind yet again."Someone mentioned the name there, at any rate, and they seemed to be speaking to or about someone who was present, and I knew all of the other players. If it's really that guy... we can't touch him. So get rid of any of those thoughts."

Beat had made his opinions of PKers very clear in the past. Even the way he had asked just now was telling. While some might use the name as a means of employing caution, that word was one that Beat did not use as often as Shield did. He anticipated the argument that he knew Beat would be tempted to begin.

"Seriously," he warned. "I don't know how closely you were watching him, but he's on a level that only a few other players have likely seen. His damage output is double what the other top tier DPS players are putting out there. Almost certainly a Unique Skill under his belt." Shield's voice was practically a growl. "I'm not eager to let a player killer wander free, but Beatbox could have gone toe to toe with the pair of us. It'd take an entire guild on its own to take that player down. And that guild would lose people. Almost certainly."

They were nearing the edge of the settlement now. Shield was trying his best not to look directly at Beat. It was going to take some time to iron things out between them, and this conversation had the potential to be a strain on already thin ice.

The martial artist's eyes opened wide as he recalled precisely who Shield was referring to, "That guy!?" The player's name definitely stood out, but not nearly as much as his ability. Shield was not exaggerating, though this fact only served to evoke more rage from the young man.

Too weak....again!

"Damn it!" Beat shouted as his fist found the trunk of a thick tree, which shook from the force of his blow, angering a family of birds that fled the branches they had made their home, "Of course he's one of the untouchables!" He shouted louder than before, quickening his pace and pulling out his map, focusing his anger into finding their goal or anything that would take a punch.

"These people get crazy strong, and that all well and good, but to turn that power on another human being!!" His teeth clenched as he tossed his map to the side, the display fading away, "It's unforgivable! It's murder!! This isn't a damn game!!!" He screamed, getting progressively louder as the wildlife hushed in response to Beat's voice carrying through the trees, potentially garnering attention from a monster or two.

Not a game?

While Shield was well aware of the serious nature of Sword Art Online, Beat had always taken a more carefree approach. To hear those words leave his mouth was simultaneously a relief and a worry.

What happened to you?

Before there was time to speculate, another resounding bang sounded behind them on the wooden plankway upon which they walked, seemingly in reply to the blow Beat had struck on the tree trunk. Quickly following the first were three more bangs. Shield whipped around just in time to see a small troop of fanged, Dire Apes lumbering towards the two players. Shield whipped his menu open and just managed to equip his sword and shield. The apes, reacting to the grisly face on the Manticore Mask, leaped back, pausing to consider their target for a moment.

In their hesitation, Shield had taken a quick breath and unleashed a torrent of sound and air that rippled across the fur of the attackers.

"You could not have picked a worse time!" he boomed, his voice in conjunction with the shield soaking up all of their attentions like a sponge.

The four muscular beasts charged in, swinging their fists wildly. While one missed altogether, two of them struck home, and the last managed to land a blow directly on Shield's sternum. The damage was insignificant, but it was still a lucky break on the creature's part. Shield watched as only the other two attackers suffered a slight loss to their health.

Lucky so and so avoided the defensive damage with that hit...

Beat's ears perked up as the apes made their displeasure known. The buzz of rage and intense introspection cleared and Beat's familiar smile returned as the beat of combat quickly surrounded him. For the young martial artist, combat was like music and the one who could feel the beat the best was the victor.

"What's this? I'm sorry, didn't know we had eavesdroppers. That's so rude!" Beat said as Shield took the initiative and drew the attention of the primates who had decided they were done living. Beat's smile grew as he was reminded of a brighter time of the two of them fighting together on the lower floors. Beat's figure began to glow with the effect of the charge skill as his left leg grew bright just before he whipped up a tornado which flew into the group of Apes, tearing at their digital flesh.

"It's not over..." Beat said with a grin as the twister centered itself around one of the ape, freezing it in place in a thin prison of ice after seemingly rooting the creature in place, "You stay put!"

Without missing a beat, Shield's companion had jumped into the fray. He debated as he watched the apes take their licks whether or not to take an defensive offense and parry their incoming blows, and as one was frozen mid kick, he even wondered whether he should try to proc the extra damage from the status effect, but in his party HUD, he was reminded just how much energy Martial Arts cost its user, and he made up his mind.

"Heads up, Beat!" he called out, tucking his sword into the strap of his shield and focusing his energy points into his now empty palm. The energy formed into a light blue ball that hovered just over his hand, and with a swing of his elbow and a flick of his wrist, he tossed it to Beat.

With that, he drew out his sword and focused back on the apes, three of whom were already back on their feet. The creatures charged, beating their chests as they did so. Shield ducked behind his defenses, but not before one clever ape had caught him across the shoulder. The damage, though still minuscule, did not trigger Shield's defensive damage, leaving the attacker relatively fresh compared to the others whose club-like hands now bore glowing scratches and scorch marks.

"Hit 'em again! Keep it up!" he called out dodging back out of the apes' midst to open them up for another AoE.

Beat's eyes widened as he watched the shining ball of energy fly to him, "What is that?!" he shouted as he moved around the battle field, quickly realizing that the sphere was following him closely. He reached out and caught the ball with his right as a warm sensation filled him and his energy bar went up, bring a grin to his face as he took to the air, aiming fro the spot Shield was vacating, in the middle of the group of apes.

"Thanks! That's a nice new trick!" he said as he landed on target as the apes' gaze followed the retreating tank. "Hey, where are you looking?"

Before the apes could turn to face him, they found themselves caught up in Beat's infamous tornado kick and the twister that followed the execution. Beat stood in the middle of the screaming apes as his whirlwind put more gashes or pixelated red on their bodies, his arms folded and a grin on his face, "Man...it's been way too long since I could do this!"

"Old dogs do learn them now and again!" Shield called out, already forming a new ball of energy to toss to his partner. The only apes who would likely be turning their attention to Beat were frozen, meaning that if and when they were released, Shield could draw their focus then. "Keep it up! They're already starting to dip below half!"

Only one of the apes had crossed into the yellow range of its health bar, but two more were very near that point. The fourth, and somehow the healthiest, had taken more heat from Beat than the others, and even through the ice that covered its hairy frame, Shield could see its eyes focusing on the younger player.

Looks like it's almost time to do that thing I do.

He filled his lungs with air, waiting until the status effect wore off to unleash the force of yet another howl.

"Che, I wish I had a stronger AOE!" Beat said in a disgruntled tone as he began spinning once again, his leg whipping up a twister around himself that would slowly expand and consume the beastly primates once again, freezing two of them as he had done with his previous attack. Beat ceased his spin as observed the product of his attack, which continued to howl and slash at their enemies as he watched their healthbars drop at a rate he could not say he was pleased with. He folded his arms and looked upwards as he began to think on his situation. If he was going to push the front lines, he would need a more well-rounded solution to fighting large groups of enemies.

"You know, two handed spear users seem to have some pretty nasty AOE attacks..." Beat added as soon as the sound from his twister had died down, being replaced by the moans of recovering dire apes,  "Think I should switch? It would make farming a little easier for us." He added, looking to Shield, clearly not worried about the now screaming apes.

Shield watched as the remaining, unfrozen apes recovered and charged him, pounding his body with their fists, each of which were left the worse for wear. The confused primates fell away from him, slamming their broad hands into the wooden walkway and beating their chests. All the while, he listened to Beat's musings and charged up another serving of energy which he tossed over.

"Well, as far as AoE goes, two hander spears are top of the meta," Shield called out. "I think in the end, you lose some damage to single-target, but I'll be able to make up some for that with my new riposte mods. Anything strong enough for us to fight one at a time will be a prime target for parrying."

It was not uncommon for the two of them to have open conversations about strategy, even in the midst of fights. They had each come from a background of min-maxing in online RPG's. It was a large part of what had gotten them to the front lines as quickly as they did.

"I say, if you don't mind the switch and you can afford it, it's one worth making," Shield concluded. "Just make sure we can get our house upgraded before you go spreading your resources too thin."

Beat's eyes rose as his battle senses kept him appraised of the apes' positions, "Axes huh?" He continued to ponder as he moved into postion for another strike, his left leg glowing with power of his tornadic sword art, "I'll have to look into that. Not gonna lie, spears are cooler than axes in my opinion, but I suppose I'll look into it."

With a quick spin and flick of his leg, his whipped up yet another chilling tornado that managed to freeze yet another pair of apes as it ripped at their digital flesh, draining their health bars to within a final blow.

"One more should do it on three of them. I can handle a hit from one, keep me energized and we'll mow down the boss!"

Beat smirked and locked eyes with the three apes he had managed to anger more than Shield had, "Bring it on!"

It bothered Shield more than a little bit to allow his companion to take hits, but until Beat was considerably damaged, efficiency was difficult to argue with. He nodded and turned his attention to his hand where another glowing sphere of energy was already beginning to form. He tossed it over to Beat just in time to see the two unfrozen apes descend on him. Their fists hammered down on him with force and prejudice, the simian monsters finally getting to exact their revenge. Shield winced as he watched as Beat's health bar was drained practically to the half way point.

"I know this will get us through the dragon fight faster, but man is that unnerving to watch," he growled over the din of battle. "Just keep your guard up. Odds are, unless I get in there to intervene, you're going to have at least one more swing at you this fight before all is said and done."

As the apes screamed, Beat crossed his arms above his head as they leaped into the air and came down on his guarding arms with their full weight and all of the force they could muster. Beat grunted as he watched his health bar tick below half, something a mob had not done to him in a long time, though he understood that he had told Shield to keep him energized, so he really had no one to blame but himself.

"That's it! Fight for your life! We have to just the same as you do!" Beat said, chuckling as trhe apes reared back for another assault.

"EEEYAAAAAH!!!!" Beat screamed as he released yet another tornado kick, this time ripping three of the apes into pixelated shreds and leaving the last one close to death. Beat stared at the ape, knowing full well that it could not be intimidated, but he spoke to it all the same, "If you want to run, you should probably do it now, before I finish deciding how to finish you."

With three of the four foes dead, Shield was far less worried. Even if the last attack hit, struck, Beat was easily safe. Shield let his shoulders relax a little, concentrating his mind and his energy into his continued efforts to pump Beat up. All in all, considering both players had been putting out energy constantly, both of their meters were sitting well above half.

"At this rate, the actual dragon is probably going to be an easier fight than this," Shield called out. "That is, if the progression of the previous dragons can be an indicator."

As the ape made its last desperate attempt to repay the damages done to it, the beast wound up its fist and struck out at Beat, narrowly missing him. It tossed its head back and let out a howl of anger and dismay, turning and looking around to see if there was any chance of escape.  Shield stepped into its way.

"Where do you think you're going, pal?"

When the ape attacked again, Beat was ready, having seen their movements enough to time a narrow dodge that he performed with a quick, controlled sway, "ooo so close!" Beat mockingly shouted at the now frustrated Ape.

"Finally, I can use a different attack! Lucky you." He said as both of his hands began to shimmer. Beat's arms became blurs as he charged forward and began to riddle the primate's body with precision knife hand strikes. Each strike blasted away a part of the ape's body and Beat didn't cease striking until the game had decided the creature was finally finished. Beat stared at the space the mob had been for several minutes before straightening up and grinning at Shield.

"Talk about stress relief! I've needed a good fight for a long time I think." Beat said, slamming his fist into the other hand as he continued to walk down the path, "Let's find that dragon!"

"With as pent up as you seemed to be, that ape might as well have already been dead," Shield said, a slight lift in his eyebrows as if this was somewhat of an understatement. Finding the dragon though, was a complicated matter. Nobody had done it so far, or at least nobody of note, and it took the better part of the afternoon scouring the most likely of spots before Shield received a ping from one of the info brokers that he had grilled.

Quote

"Someone said that there was something odd in one of the lakes. Might be nothing, but I'll send you the coordinates."

To his relief, the spot was not far off. Before they had even gotten to the lake, Shield began hearing little chirrups of contentedness echoing over the water. When they emerged from the cover of the trees, the glass surface of the lake seemed pristine, undisturbed by anything, including the small blue dragon that was currently swimming in the center.

"Ready for the big fight?" he said to Beat before filling his lungs with air. "Swimming time is over!" he crowed, the compressed force of his lungs kicking up a series of waves that washed over the dragon. The little creature watched, unfazed by the call, but obliging the howl by sprinting up out of the water to make its charge.

He met the dragon with his shield, the creature spanging harmlessly off of the barrier, or at least harmlessly for Shield. Even without having sustained noteworthy damage, Shield's defenses had taken a chunk out of the wym's health gauge. It glared at the tank and flapped in midair, calculating its new approach.
