F02/PP <<Secret Medicine of the Forest>>

Recommended Posts

Oscar stumbled upon yet another quest he had failed to complete. With that in mind, he decided to shoot Cordelia a message. After the Traveler, he had found a new friend to do these low-level quests with, something he appreciated immensely. Oscar waited in the tavern in the heart of Urbus for Cordelia to arrive, watching as poor Gatsly desperately tried to find another person willing to take down the Venom Snapper attacking his caravans. Poor guy was probably destitute at this point. Leeroy and Jenkins curled around his foot, both of them slumbering peacefully. Since they were in a safe zone, Jenkins didn't feel the need to be completely on guard. It was good to see both heads of his familiar at ease and resting. It rarely happened, even in the safety of his own home. Oscar leaned back in his chair and started to doze off as he waited for Cordelia to arrive. There was nothing like a nice nap before a quest to really prepare you for it.

Cordelia burst through the door of the tavern, a giddy grin on her face as the door slammed against the wall. Pacco let out a shrill squawk as she ran over to where Oscar was.

"The queen as arr- oh he's napping," she mumbled, scratching her chin. How does someone wake up someone from a nap without bursting their eardrums? All of the ideas in her head probably weren't... the best choices to wake up someone. Oh gosh, she's never woken someone up before! How do normal people do it?

She paced back and forth as she nervously chewed on her fingernails. Does she tap him awake? Would that be too weird? Of course it would be too weird! She could probably just... tip his chair over...

What the heck-

She mentally slapped herself. What was wrong with her? She just started making friends and now she's already trying to murder friendships!

Oscar awoke with a start to see Cordelia pacing in front of him. His sudden movement had awakened Leeroy & Jenkins as well, who began looking around the tavern to see what was amiss. Oscar gave the blonde-haired woman a smile and cocked his head to the side. "You ready to get this show on the road?" Oscar led her out to the forest where they soon encountered four Nepents. They scampered out from behind a tree, their bizarre forms making him simply want to destroy them as soon as possible. They were quite unnerving. Oscar drew his blade and spun on his heels, slicing in all directions. Tsumuji Gurama claimed the lives of 3 of the Nepents immediately. The surviving Nepent attacked Oscar, dealing critical damage. Well, one damage. It got the splash text for a critical hit, but even with the damage bonus could not bypass his mitigation. This was a quest intended for a level two player, after all. "Alright Cordelia! You're up! Bring that last one down!"

"Yep," she grinned, giving him a thumbs up.

This quest was probably too easy for her, but knowing her, she was probably still going to fail at it.

She clapped her hands together lightly as Oscar took down three of the four nepents. People and their AOE attacks... lucky.

"I'll try my best," she said nervously, dashing off with her rapier in hand.

Oh look- she missed. Cordelia face palmed herself as she felt part of her face twitch. "Just kill me now," she groaned, walking back to Oscar with a sulky expression. "Maybe I should've waited for my trinket to come in before i started doing quests again," she muttered, scratching the side of her cheek sheepishly.

"Sorry about that, you're probably going to have to carry em through this whole quest... even though we're practically the same level," she deadpanned, frowning deeply. This was a whole new form of embarrassment.

Nepent1 attacks! MD5-3. Miss. Savvy Activates.

Oscar turned his attention to the only surviving Nepent and attempted to dispatch it with a simple Basic Attack. He just barely missed it, distracted by Cordelia slightly. He didn't let the frustration show, mostly because he wasn't exactly frustrated. It would be one thing if these creatures were a threat. "Here's a chance to redeem yourself! Switch!" Oscar pushed off the ground with his feet, flying backwards in a straight line. Cordelia would be able to use this opportunity to run into striking distance from behind him and, hopefully, deal lethal damage to the Nepent. He landed on his feet and skidded backwards a few inches, bringing his sword around his back and getting into a fighting stance. If Cordelia missed again, Oscar would be ready. Concentration wasn't on cooldown, which would make it much more likely that he'd be able to dispatch this creature next turn if she failed.

Cordelia sweat dropped as her rapier slashed through nothing.

Again.

"Jesus... bloody... thumbtack!" She covered her face with her hands, letting out a muffled scream. Did you like her creative curses? Yeah, she liked them, too.

She turned to Oscar with another sulky expression. "This sucks," she sniffed, hypothetical basically streaming down her face. They were literally living plants... and they barely moved! Why couldn't she just hit a couple of plants and get it over with? She was fine when she was facing herself, why was today so different?! These things were literally just a basic attack away from dying! She could literally just poke them and then they'd die!

She guessed that the universe just hated her. Yeah... that had to be it. Or maybe it was just her off day! Maybe she had spent too long being a couch potato? Well, it was one of those things!

Oscar charged forward, naught but a sapphire blur as he covered the distance between himself and the Nepent in the blink of an eye. His blade glinted in the sunlight as it carved through the final Nepent. It was, at last, put down. Now that they were out of the way, they could focus on the quest at hand without worrying about them missing. A Nepent Variant came waddling out from behind a bush. Summoned by the death of the four Nepents, this would serve as their objective. Kill the variant, loot an item, and be done. Hopefully, they would drop what Oscar and Cordelia needed this round. Otherwise it was back to the grind again. Oscar really didn't want that and judging from Cordelia's reaction, she very much wouldn't care for the opportunity to miss again. "Alright Cordelia! You go first! I'll take it out if you miss, okay?" He readied his blade, preparing to leap back into combat immediately.

Cordelia fell to her knees in absolute agony. She felt so... so useless! How could she miss three times in a row? What use was she, anymore?!

The blonde sniffed and wobbly stood back up. This was pissing her off a lot. No, she didn't miss once. She didn't miss twice. No. She missed frekin' three times! How does someone even mess up that much?! She was a DPS, she was supposed to be dealing damage!

She sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose angrily. Damn these stupid stats... she needed to get Pacco trained so he could finally start helping her in battle. She was so useless without any accuracy! The corner of her eye twitched as she watch the nepent whirl around, ready to attack her. She blinked blankly as the nepent literally missed her... without her even moving.

"That makes the two of us, bub." She sniffed, "that makes the two of us."

Oscar rushed forward following Cordelia's whiff and struck. Two long slashes using the length of his blade were dealt to the Nepent Variant. The creature burst into a shower of shards. Unfortunately, it didn't drop the item they needed. As if on cue, another four Nepents came waddling out of the underbrush. Oscar leaped back, letting Cordelia take center stage. He didn't know if rapiers had any AOE arts, but they would be extremely useful at this point. It also offered her a chance to redeem herself from the previous misses. Hopefully she would be able to take all of these down in one fell swoop and then Oscar could swing into the Variant that would follow afterwards. He kept an eye on his energy bar. He'd only lost 8 points of energy through all of this. He could keep going strong for a bit longer, he surmised. By his math, he had three more rounds of Nepent slaying in him before he would need a break.

Cordelia sniffed again as she watched Oscar slay the variant... and not get an item. Gosh darn it, now they have to go through a whole 'nother wave of nepents. Maybe she could finally hit one of them?

Wrong.

She did not hit any of them.

She did not.

In fact, she got whacked back by the one she tried to attack. Cordelia wiped her south as she stood up again... only to be met with the rest of the three nepents surrounding her. "Oh I see how it is," she growled.

Like a scene straight out of an action movie, the nepents charged at her one by one. Her eyes narrowed as she narrowly dodged each of her attacks. Sweet, her savvy should activate after this! Maybe she would finally hit something!

She sighed and turned her head to Oscar. "See if you can knock out some of them with an AOE attack or something," she said, sniffing. "Maybe I should've chosen a better weapon for this..." the blonde muttered, scratching her chin.

Oscar used his second Tsumuji Gurama for the quest. He spun around on his heels, striking in all directions. Two of the four Nepents died outright, but the other two were still alive and kicking. The first lashed out in an attempt to deal damage to the Azure Crusader. He was able to dip out of the way. This maneuver activated his Savvy Enhancement, which would make him more accurate on his next strike. The second, however, sank its teeth into Oscar's arm. It only dealt a pittance of damage, despite getting a critical hit on him. Oscar shook the Nepent free and stepped back to give Cordelia room to maneuver. Hopefully this would be her time. She would finally get a hit out on one of these creatures. "Hey Cordelia! I believe in you. You got this!" He shouted words of encouragement to her. Hopefully they would reach her through the frustration she must be feeling right now.

Cordelia felt her spirits instantly lift as she delivered a quick slash to the closest nepent. "Oh, the deities have answered my prayers," she muttered under her breath as she watched it explode. "About the dang time."

"Hey," she said turning her head back to Oscar with a pleasant grin. "I finally hit it-"

Wham!

She flew back against the nearest tree with a low thud. "Well dang," Cordelia hissed, rubbing the back of her head with a scowl. "That hurt! .. kind of," she mumbled hotly, getting back on her feet.

"Alright, you try to take that one on! I'm going to try to one-shot that darn variant and get that item. This quest is too bothersome," the blonde called, nodding her head to the last remaining nepent-- the same little rascal that whacked her into a tree. A tree. Perhaps it was tough love?

Yeah... it was totally that.

Oscar stepped forward and delivered a simple Basic Attack to the remaining Nepent. Once it was defeated, yet another variant came scurrying out, summoned by the death of its kin. Oscar stepped back, allowing Cordelia to take to the lead. She definitely needed to actually hit something to catch up with the damage that Oscar was dishing out. Although his accuracy wasn't the best, it was a heap sight better than what Cordelia had. Maybe landing the killing blow on the Variant would raise her spirits? Either way, Oscar would focus on backing her up if she missed. They had a good rhythm going. They complimented one another well. Oscar readied his blade and dropped down into a low fighting stance, preparing to activate his Concentration skill if needs be. He really only had one more round in him so they had to end combat pretty quickly before he ran out of energy.

Cordelia lunged at the nepent, her blonde hair flying wildly behind her as she charged up a more nimble sword art.

She used quick stabs on what she assumed was the nepent's torso... or whatever it really was, but it didn't take long for the nepent to eventually blow up.

"Thank the lord, I don't feel like utter crap now," she laughed softly, pushing her bangs up as she lowered her rapier. She sighed and held up the ovule. "Gross," she mumbled, shoving it into her inventory.

She looked back at Oscar and gave him a toothy grin. "Alright, let's get going. There's still plenty of light left in the day so maybe we could do something after I give this item back to that NPC or whatever. Maybe get some food... or we could go hunting for mobs... I don't know if I'd do well against another mob," she giggled nervously, already starting to march her way back to town.

Oscar was happy to see Cordelia in good spirits after that last fight. She had a beautiful smile. And she could hold her own in a fight. Oscar was happy to have made a new friend who was on his level. Bahr carried him through most things. Well, everyone he met carried him through most things. It was refreshing to be the carrier for a change. He smile and walked next to the tall blonde. "You did great out there. Had a bit of a slow start, but we finished it!" He gave her a playful nudge with his elbow and chuckled. The lack of accuracy could be rectified later. But she was plenty good. Perhaps this partnership could be a long-term thing. "So tell me, what quest do you want to do after this one? I haven't met anyone around my level before and it's fun hanging out with you. Personally, I was thinking about heading up to Floor Four and doing that Avalanche quest. But, we could always do something else. Maybe push the envelope a little bit?"

"Yeah," she rubbed her arm sheepishly as she felt part of her cheek twitch just thinking about it. "I really need to train Pacco up to help me in fights," she mumbled under her breath. "Speaking of Pac-" She blinked as her familiar came swooping down at her. It was like reliving the day of befriending him all over again!

"Wait- no, Pacco. please, my hair is actually combed today!" She squeaked, using her hands to shield her long hair. She shut her eyes closed as she prepared for the worst-- which was basically just Pacco literally getting stuck in her hair, but she didn't feel anything. She peeked open one eye to see that Pacco was perched on her shoulder, his head tilted as if to say, 'girl, what the heck are you doing'.

"You're so mean," she huffed, wrinkling her nose at him before walking into the small town. She had quickly given the ovule to the NPC and sighed in relief.

"That quest item was not worth all of the misses I had to have."

She turned to Oscar and tapped her finger on her cheek thoughtfully, as if debating. "I was planning to go do that quest with a friend of mine... but we could always try doing another quest around that skill level. Have you done the Deforestation one yet?"

Oscar watched the display with Pacco and Cordelia. He could only laugh at how adorable the sight was. The familiar was cute as heck, a far cry from the power emanating from Leeroy & Jenkins. He followed her into town. Just watching her. She had an air about her. Something Oscar just couldn't place. Looking at her now was like fog lifting from his eyes. If ever there was a time to relive the feeling of a school yard crush, now was poor timing. He took a moment to collect himself; he was cognizant enough to be able to call his emotions to heel. After she had turned in the quest item, a completion screen popped up. He hit accept and turned to Cordelia. "I haven't done Deforestation yet. I'd probably need a partner. You down?"

As the question fell from his lips, another thought occurred. They still had plenty of daylight, as she said. They had plenty of time to hunt, certainly. But what about after that? "Hey Cordelia. Do you have somewhere to crash after we're done here?" The thought of her sleeping out in the cold turned his stomach, especially considering that he had plenty of room in his home on Floor Seven. It went beyond his normal generous nature. It was definitely the crush talking. But, regardless his home was more than spacious enough for two people to live comfortably. No sense letting half of an unfinished house go to waste.

“Of course!” She chimed, giving him a close eyed grin. “I think I’d be absolutely obliterated if I went alone, anyway,” Cordelia said with a small laugh.

She gave him a sideways glance and shrugged her shoulders. “I haven’t gotten the time to grind up enough Col to get a house yet, so I’m just temporarily staying in an inn. Maybe I’ll scrap up enough money one day to get myself a nice little house, though,” the girl said with a small smile. Yeah, it kind of sucked living in an inn, but it was better than a box, right?

Well, it was certainly different from the life she used to have.

“I have no plans to really open up a shop, either,” she mumbled, her lips tugging down for a few seconds before smiling again. “But I’m sure I’ll have enough one day. I don’t really spend a lot of money on anything but gear... so, that’s not a lot,” she explained. You really only have to get new gear every couple of months! So it wasn’t like, she was broke as hell.

At least she wasn't sleeping on the streets. That was good. He was rather leery about making the offer so soon. But he decided, screw it. Living in a large house by himself with only his familiar to keep him company was incredibly lonely. If kept too long, is mental state would suffer. He'd only just clawed himself out of the hole and he very desperately did not want to go back into it. The corners of his mouth tugged down for a moment. Why was it so incredibly hard to speak his mind? He'd never had a problem with it before.

Come on Oscar, you're a grown man. Speak.

That mental assurance was enough to give Oscar the courage to posit his question to Cordelia. "You know, I have a decent place on Floor 7. There's plenty of room up there. You're more than welcome to stay with me. At least until you find a place. Can't have my friends sleeping in an Inn when I have room for them, you know?"

Cordelia blinked at the offer.

"A-are you sure?" She fretted, holding up her hands as she gave a sweat drop. "I can be a total slob around the house a-and I am really, really, really messy," she mumbled hotly, averting her eyes away in embarrassment.

What did you expect?

She had been living the life of luxury all of her life... and now someone was asking her to be a roommate? What if it wasn't like how it was at home? What if they think she's a total snob?  She didn't have maids or servants anymore! How was she going to be able to do anything around a house without them?

Her lips pursed together tightly as she fumbled with her fingers nervously. She had just made a new friend, she couldn't lose them because of something like this! Her tutor never taught her about roommates and... and houses! Also, 'plenty of room'? What if it was a giant house and she started acting like it was her own? Oh, was was Oscar going to think when he saw that she was a total brat? No one knows about her in this game, right? What if they find out who she was?

"I-I don't know," she mumbled, her brows furrowing in confusion. "I'll have to think about it."

She gulped and gave him a small bow. "I'm sorry, but, uh, I'll message you when I'm thinking about doing that quest. Bye!" She said quickly, giving him a small bow guiltily before dashing off.
