Floor 3 was crazy cold. It was weird that he had never been here before. Had he known that, he probably would have set up his house here instead of on Floor 7. He absolutely loved the cold. He trudged through the snow, happy as a lark. The biting chill caused him to shiver, a sensation he loved. His Survival skill took the edge off, so it was just cold enough to be pleasant for him. He looked behind him at his familiar. The Twin-Headed Cerberus was not enjoying this as much as Oscar was. Both Leeroy and Jenkins were shooting daggers at him for bringing them to this god-forsaken place. Oscar had worked up quite a sweat training at his newly-upgraded Slime Farm, so he was thankful for the cool-down. He shattered a Yui's Grace in his hand and scarfed down a Chili Dog with Chili Fries and chased it with a Steel-Infused Hot Dog as they walked. Oscar was pleased when the buffs appeared on his bar, boosting his damage and giving him an experience boost for this outing.

Combat Encounter

And then he found it. A giant icy Golem loomed tall above him. Truly, this was the mightiest of foes. It must have been 20 feet tall. 20 feet and several hundred tons of stone and ice. Oscar drew Bloody Howl and prepared to do battle with the beast. The bards would sing of this duel for ages. Truly, their bout would shake the earth and shape the landscape. They would dance with one another, locked in a deadly ballet of wills. Oscar, as he was smaller, and nimbler, got the first strike. This David & Goliath story would be the talk of Aincrad! He struck, Haku Senpu whipping up a deadly whirlwind. A fine alpha strike. The golem fell backwards. And off the edge of a cliff. The time it took to hear the loud thud when the Golem reached the bottom told him that the creature was dead. Oscar sighed, disappointed. He sheathed his sword, too depressed to even enjoy the cold weather.

"That was anticlimactic."

COMBAT ENCOUNTER
Greater Golem
HP 200
DMG 60

With his epic battle so thoroughly ruined by the cliff, Oscar had originally decided to head home and drown his sorrows in hot dogs. But, then he encountered a Greater Golem. Deciding it was probably a better idea to get something done today instead of wallowing, he rushed in and attacked the creature. Bloody Howl gleamed in the sunlight as he used Haku Senpu to whip up a powerful whirlwind that would carve into the creature. But his thoughts were of Avalanche and the fight that could have been. Thus, he missed. Thankfully, so did the Golem. Oscar collected his focus and faced the Golem head-on. It was time to let the past be the past. His epic confrontation with Avalanche was never meant to be. As much as it hurt to think of such a thing, Oscar had an enemy in front of him. A pale stand-in for Avalanche, but an enemy nonetheless. If he wasn't careful, he would join Avalanche in the grave.

Focused on the battle at hand, Oscar planted his feet and delivered a whirlwind of slashes to the enemy golem. The wind carved deep gashes into the stone creature, sending dust and dirt flying in all directions. The golem reared back and threw a mighty punch at Oscar. But the Azure Crusader was too quick for it and nimbly spun out of the way. This maneuver activated Oscar's Savvy enhancement, which would boost his accuracy on his next attack. He corrected his posture and faced down the Golem again. Leeroy & Jenkins barked loudly at the creature, as if the sounds of their voices would damage the creature. It was absolutely adorable. But Oscar couldn't afford to lose focus now. As cute as his beast of a familiar was, he had to stay zeroed-in on the target. Otherwise, he could get seriously hurt. So, he turned his full attention back to the golem and made ready to deal another heavy blow.

Alas, Oscar's focus wasn't the greatest, even after attempting to use conscious effort to make up for the fact his heart longed for an epic confrontation. As he drew his blade back to strike, visions of the greatest fight known to Aincrad flashed before him. It threw him off his game. And it threw his aim off. Haku Senpu hit nothing but air, dealing zero damage to the rocky enemy in front of him. It was a tragedy that a generic, run-of-the-mill Golem was putting up more of a fight than Avalanche had. And that was mostly due to the fact that Oscar simply couldn't focus well enough to hit the thing. The golem threw a punch and Oscar half-heartedly dodged it. Nothing could replace Avalanche. This was a pretender. A pale imitation of His icy glory. And it must be crushed. Seething with impromptu zealotry, Oscar went into the next round angry. How dare he stand where He stood!

"You're not my dad!" Oscar screamed, parroting a meme from the early 2000's. He swung his blade with mighty force, wind cleaving through the Golem and carving deep ruts in its hide. The creature attempted to crush Oscar beneath its mighty fists, but failed spectacularly. Oscar had dashed behind it, dealing a slice to its legs as it drove its fist deep into the earth. It struggled for a moment to pry itself loose, but by that time, Oscar had already dis-armed it. The golem stumbled back as Oscar cleaved right on through its arm, leaving it with one remaining punching appendage. Oscar's look of triumph quickly faded as the golem lifted up its removed arm and yeeted it at the Azure Crusader. He dipped out of the way in the nick of time, dodging the oncoming arm and putting himself in position to end this fight. Next turn, Avalanche's pretender would face Oscar's swift and brutal justice.

The golem was on its last legs. Oscar didn't see the point a ton of energy on Haku Senpu. So, he elected to use Tsuji Kaze to deliver the killing blow. The golem crumbled, laying dead upon the stones. The loot was as insulting as it's attempts to impersonate the epic Avalanche. Though, he couldn't complain too much. He had been low on resources and this gave him a fair amount, plus some Col for his nest egg. Upgrading houses was expensive and he needed to have the funds available in case Cordelia decided she wanted to take him up on his offer and move into the place. He'd have to pay to add another bedroom so she would have her own space and it was likely she'd need more amenities as well. The cost for that seemed astronomical to the lowly Oscar. He didn't have the stopping power to go on a real farming run, nor did he have the energy to sustain it for very long.

Realizing that he was so low on funds, the gravity of the situation dawned on him. He had just asked someone who didn't know what hot dogs were to come stay in his house. There was only two ways you didn't know what a hot dog was. Either you're from a country that doesn't know what food is. Or you've got frick you money. Judging from her mannerisms, Oscar surmised that it had to be the latter. The contents of his wallet suddenly felt insignificant. He couldn't even afford to buy materials for his shop, much less purchase an extension to his house. He definitely didn't want to appear broke in front of someone he was crushing on. So there was only one thing left to do: Grind. But where? That was the question. He decided that this was a problem worth risking his hide over and headed up to Floor 11. He could get Tier 2 drops there, which would carry more value than what he currently had.

Oscar stepped off of the teleport platform and into the settlement of Taft. It was his first time so high up. The Cathedral looming over the teleportation plaza was quite a sight to behold! Oscar stared in awe until he noticed a group of players congregating around the square. He approached them, asking where he could find some enemies to farm. Some of them were tight-lipped while other suggested the forest, much to the chagrin of the tight-lipped folk. Oscar thanked them and promised not to get in their way too much. He didn't want to disrupt their farming plans, but surely they could afford to let him have the odd straggler. He did an about-face and headed towards the forest, whistling a tune as he did. He couldn't help but liken this to going out into the wilds and surviving. Which was something he did very well. As he left the town, he noticed a glowing spot and added a material to his inventory. His first Tier 2 material. He thought it might have been a bigger deal than this.

COMBAT ENCOUNTER
Antman
200 HP
60 DMG

Oscar had scarcely stepped foot into the forest before he was attacked by a giant ant. The sun glinted off of the chitinous black husk of the bipedal, spear-wielding ant. It's antennae waggled in Oscar's direction as it clacked its mandibles together in an effort to intimidate Oscar. The Azure Crusade was not amused. He drew Bloody Howl from its scabbard and pointed it at the creature. He blade traveled in wide arcs, swiftly whipping up a powerful whirlwind. The wind bit into the antman's exoskeleton, drawing dark sticky ichor from each of the wounds. The hit had activated his weapon's Bleed effect, which ticked for a bit more damage. The antman lunged at Oscar with his spear. He dodged out of the way, which in turn, activated his Savvy enhancement to make him more accurate on the next turn. Then, he planted his feet and faced the creature, ready to strike again.

The antman lunged at Oscar, but he was able to easily block the oncoming attack. Then, he swept his sword about in powerful swift arcs that whipped up a powerful whirlwind. The wind shear was so sharp that it cut even more gashes into the creature's hide. The pair of them then crossed blades, steel clashing against steel as they swung and parried, dodged and riposted. The two of them danced with one another through the forest, weaving in between trees and trying to get the drop on the other. Despite having taken severe damage, the Antman was able to keep pace with Oscar. Or, perhaps more accurately, Oscar was able to keep pace with it. Rather than using the system to guide his attacks, Oscar relied purely on his own movements and reactions. The ant had seemed so slow to him. Predictable. It telegraphed its attacks heavily and even its quick thrusts could be seen coming a mile away.

Oscar didn't know that it was possible, but Oscar felt like the ant was getting slower. He parried an attack, stepped forward to knock the ant off balance and attempted to use Han'ei on the creature. It reacted faster than he expected and blocked the blow. So the system can speed them up. Interesting. It was an interesting exercise, fighting without the aid of the system. But, Oscar could pick the pace up as well. The antman rained down blow after blow on Oscar, all of which were blocked or deflected by the flat of his blade. The system continued to make the antman faster and Oscar picked up the pace in kind. The two of them exchanged a flurry of blows, moving almost too fast to be tracked. What was the rhythmic sound of metal on metal quickly became a staccato pinging that echoed through the forest. Oscar could tell he was pushing his limit, but he was in the zone. He could keep this pace at least.

Oscar finally got his opening. Even though the system had sped the creature up, Oscar was able to deflect a blow and leave the creature open for a full second. That full second was all he needed to deal the killing blow. Han'ei - two swift strikes - came out like lightning. He cut the creature from collar to hip and then hip to collar, forming an X across its chest. The creature shattered like glass, leaving behind nothing but its spear and a loot interface. Upon looting the creature, Oscar found four T2 Materials, an Uncommon Consumable, and some Col. He added it all to his inventory and pushed further into the forest. Despite the disappointing start to his day, Oscar was actually enjoying himself. Turning off the aim assist was probably the best decision he had ever made. It certainly made things more challenging, but it allowed for a more involved combat experience. Oscar would need to practice with this for a while to truly get the hang of it.

Oscar pushed deeper into the forest, electing to attempt to find materials as his energy regenerated. He couldn't go too fast or else he would run out of energy in the middle of a fight and be stuck plinking away at the enemy for 10 damage a pop. The forest, however, was quite gorgeous. Even more idyllic and serene than the forest on Floor 2. You know, except for the antmen trying to skewer him. He could deal with bears and wolves, but humanoid bugs was just a touch too far. Kayaba had a morbid sense of humor. Or perhaps it was the system generating these enemies? Regardless, they would have to have been programmed in somehow. And whoever did it was a right butthole for doing so. He imagined some basement-dwelling creature huddled over his computer designing the animations for the jet-black antmen. It caused a chill to go down his spine.

Oscar pushed farther into the forest, but not too far. He didn't want to stray very far away from the city in case things went sideways. But for the most part, he found that the enemies he'd encountered so far here wasn't any more difficult to kill than the Golems he'd been farming on his home floor. They just had higher level loot. Which Oscar certainly wasn't complaining about. He appreciated a challenge but he knew his limits. He hadn't even completely mastered his Katana yet. No sense taking on anything with huge amounts of health if he didn't have the damage to compensate for it. Two to three hits of Haku Senpu usually did the trick and he wanted to stay within that range if at all possible. He knew it wouldn't be sustainable to do so for very long, but hopefully he would have finally finished ranking his Katana Mastery by then and wouldn't need to worry about it.

COMBAT ENCOUNTER
Antman

Oscar encountered a second Antman, this one wielding a curved sword. Oscar stifled a laugh. The curved sword had to be the weakest weapon he'd ever had the displeasure of using in combat. It had taken him a bit, but he had finally graduated up to the Katana, which had served him nicely ever since. Oscar rushed forward, Bloody Howl glinting in the sunlight as it was pulled from its sheath. He stopped right in front of the creature and delivered a flurry of slashes. The wind was whipped up by the attack, carving deep wounds into the chitinous exoskeleton that wouldn't heal. He'd dealt a massive crit to the Antman and the bleed effect brought it down under half health. Judging by its health value, all Oscar needed to do was land a regular Haku Senpu the next turn and it would die to bleed. The creature reared back and tried to slice Oscar with his dinky sword. Oscar dodged out of the way and made ready for the next strike.

Oscar was correct. The next Haku Senpu did drop the Antman's health value down into bleed tick range. Oscar sheathed his sword as the antman made a move to attack. But the moment it did, bleed kicked in and it shattered into a thousand pieces. Oscar interacted with the loot window and found that he'd gotten quite a bit of Col from that engagement. It was short and sweet, easily worth the time and energy he had put into it. But now he had to wait for his energy to recover again. It kind of sucked that he could only get, at most, five uses of his strongest Sword Art out before he had to recuperate. But such was life. Oscar was still low-leveled. It would get better as he got more energy in his pool. That said, he shuddered to think how much the next rank's Sword Arts would cost him. That was a problem for future Oscar. Present Oscar was having fun.

Oscar had a pretty comfortable distance from the city. He didn't want to delve any further for fear of encountering stronger enemies. So he maintained the current distance, using the spire of the cathedral as a guide. So long as he could make out the tip of the spire, he hadn't gone too far. While he wandered, Oscar looked around for any gathering spots. After a long while searching, he came up nothing. But he found a stream from which he took a long drink of water. The cool liquid refreshed and rejuvenated him. It was crisp and clear, like you would imagine stream water, untouched by people, to be. He splashed some in his face. It was midday now so he was starting to feel a touch sluggish. The cold water on his face and neck perked him right up and got him ready for his next, and hopefully last, combat encounter. As he rose, he heard the panicked cries of someone in the distance. He leaped into action, sprinting off in the direction of the sound.

He ran and ran, sprinting deeper into the forest. Once there, he saw the same party of players fighting antmen. One of them, a rapier-wielder, had drawn the attention of one of the antmen. Oscar peered at her level. Level 5. She couldn't take more than one hit from these things. What was she doing here? Her companions had their hands full and couldn't afford to turn their backs on the enemy. To make matters worse, there was a deep ravine separating them. Oscar couldn't get to the rapier wielder quickly. He had to go around. He ran as fast as his legs would carry him, his heart pounding in his chest. He prayed that the girl would be able to hold back for just a little longer. Long enough for him to get there and help. He didn't want another death on his conscience. He didn't know if his heart could take it again. At the thought, he poured on more speed and willed his legs to move faster.

It turned away from the girl and lunged at Oscar with its spear, just barely missing his arm in the process. Savvy activated, which would boost his accuracy for the next attack. "Hang back kid! Get to a safe distance!" The girl looked at him, dumbfounded. But she quickly caught up and rushed off to hide, leaving Oscar to face the Antman alone.
