It had been so long since Oscar actually set out to go do a quest. So, he decided to mark another one off his list in the form of the <<Lord of the Seas>> quest that had been sitting, unaccepted, in his tracker ever since he hit level 30. Floor 12 was only a quick teleport away, so he stepped onto the platform and headed straight there. According to the Information Brokers, the boss didn't actually have much in the way of health, but also had a metric ton of damage output. So, to play it safe, Oscar had already come up with a strategy. He didn't feel confident that he would be able to dispatch it in one blow, even with buffs. Therefore, he decided to forego his usual buffs for this quest and avoid AoE encounters for the grind he knew he would be doing afterwards. Since most of the buffs he kept for personal use were tied up in his shop, it worked out. He wouldn't consume them unless he absolutely needed to. He only had one set, after all.

Iai[x11] to Sea Wyvern BD1. Miss.

Sea Wyvern 300/300 HP | 300 DMG MD1. Miss.

Oscar headed into the swamp. The murky waters impeded his movements. He knew that it would make it difficult to evade any incoming blows. The Information Brokers had failed to mention that. But it didn't matter that much. With his plan, he would be able to dispatch the beast without ever taking a single hit. Therefore, his own Evasion wouldn't even factor in during this fight. Soon enough, the Sea Wyvern made its appearance from below the murky waters of the swamp. It charged at Oscar, its snapping jaws charged with lightning. Oscar placed one hand on his sword and the other on the hilt. Once the beast was within striking distance, he quickly drew his sword and struck, hoping to deliver a stunning attack. Unfortunately, he missed. But thankfully, so did the enemy. He sheathed his sword  and got ready for the next round. Again, nothing had changed with the plan. This was merely a setback.

The beast charged again. This time, Oscar planted his feet and made sure his aim was true. The crashing beast rushed closer and closer to where Oscar was waiting with his trap. Then, once the beast was close enough, the trap was sprung. Quick as a flash, Oscar drew his blade and delivered a powerful strike to the beast's maw. The sudden impact triggered a discharge of electricity that stopped the beast dead in its tracks, stunning it. As it was reeling, Oscar moved in closer. He was trying to find the most opportune angle from which to deliver the killing blow. Once he found it, he planted his feet and made ready to strike. The beast wouldn't be able to move until the next round, so Oscar took his time calling his shot. Next turn would end it. Unless he missed. But he really didn't want to think about that. He would hit it, for sure.

Sea Wyvern 0/300 HP | 300 DMG

And true enough, Oscar hit. He delivered a powerful barrage of strikes to the beast, each one carving progressively larger chunks of health out of it. The final punctuating chop was what caused the beast to shatter, leaving behind nothing but glass shards and an item called <<Lightning Rod>>. The item was added to his inventory and Oscar made a point to himself unstuck from the mire as soon as possible. There was nothing worse for an Evasion build character than to have your Evasion cut by the terrain. He wouldn't be fighting anything here, that was for sure. He'd probably head up to Floor 17 or something. He really didn't know. All he knew was that his boots were full of water and he didn't think he would ever be able to get the smell of the dank, stagnant water out of his coat and pants. He might even need Bahr to craft new ones for him.

San Ge[x15] to Undead Champion BD8. Deal 225 DMG

Undead Champion 225/450 HP | 100 DMG. MD5-3. Miss.

Oscar decided, this time, to head somewhere that he had never been before. He'd heard stories about the spooky Floor 14, but had never had the balls to check it out for himself. So, he headed up for the Teleport Platform and teleported up to Floor 14. He almost immediately regretted it. The stench of death was thick in the air. The scenery was depressing and, frankly, not at all what Oscar enjoyed looking at. But, he was here. Might as well make the best of it. So he headed out of town and engaged in combat with the nearest enemy he could find. An undead soldier wielding a spear and shield. He delivered a powerful barrage of slices, punctuated by a final vertical chop that knocked the creature firmly down to half health. Then, he dipped out of the way of the skeleton's sluggish counterattack. Next turn, he would dispatch the enemy and move on with his life.

There was just something about the location that threw Oscar off his game. Normally, when an enemy was firmly within his kill range, Oscar wouldn't waste any time counterattacking. But, distracted by his bleak surroundings, Oscar couldn't help but feel just a little sluggish. Nevertheless, he stepped towards the Undead Champion, his blade taking on a deep violet hue as he charged his attack. Oscar left fly another <<San Ge>>. A fearsome barrage of strikes landed upon the Undead Champion. After delivering the final, punctuating strike, the enemy shattered into a thousand shards and was scattered to the wind. Oscar collect his loot and began looking for a safe place to rest while his Energy regenerated. He was beginning to get tired of having such little energy to work with. He needed to focus on leveling up as quickly as humanly possible.

LD13 Nothing Found.

The only thing to be done now was to find something to do while he waited for his energy to restore. There was just something about this place. Some oppressive feeling that hung in the air. It threatened to choke the life out of him if he let it. Though he began a search for crafting materials, he knew on some level that it would all be in vain. Nothing could grow in the face of this intense aura of doom that seemed to hang about the place. You could really tell the time and care the developers put into this floor to make it so dang depressing. It was a good thing that Oscar knew exactly what to do in the case of depression or else he would really be in trouble. It would take more than a little gloom and doom to undo the progress that he'd worked so hard to make. Plus, he was really only here to say he'd seen the floor before. Once he had concluded a short mob grind, he was out of here.

Again, Oscar made a token effort to attempt to locate materials to use in his crafting of mysterious meat cylinders. Ultimately, he gave up on it. He was truly afraid that anything gathered from this floor would spoil anything he attempted to cook with it. Not wishing to completely shoot his credibility in the foot, Oscar elected to cease his attempts at gathering. He had standards, dang it. And his customers knew it. Well, customer. Singular. Bahr would be able to taste if anything was off in the hot dogs that Oscar presented him. And with how foul this landscape was, he wouldn't be surprised if that same foulness was translated into his cooking. Better to err on the side of caution and rely on materials from monster drops. Though, now that he thought about it, Oscar didn't really trust those either. But, then again, he used materials dropped by spiders no problem, so it should be fine.

Oscar decided to make the most out of this brief intermission and buff himself up before his next fight with the undead. Down his greedy gullet went two hot dogs. One was designed to insure that his Col drops would be more plentiful. While the other was designed to allow him to deal more damage - at the cost of some Mitigation. Buffed up and ready to go, Oscar set about finding some targets to AoE down for some quick loot. With buffs at his back, he didn't foresee any problems moving forward. It might take him just a touch longer to finish combat, but he wanted to conserve his last Edge Shard for a rainy day. Although it was quite depressing on Floor 14, it definitely didn't constitute "rainy day" buff consumption. In any case, Oscar would be content with his buffs. They would undoubtedly see him through. Oscar pondered why he was giving this so much thought, but he merely shrugged his shoulders and continued on.

Soon enough, Oscar came upon a group of Undead Champions - similar to the first group he'd done battle with. Instead of seeing them as actual threats with sharp, pointy spears that would hurt if he got stabbed with them, Oscar saw them merely as pinatas from which loot would spring if he hit them hard enough. And so, he set about doing just that. Amatsu no Homura cleaved through their ranks, dealing heavy damage to each of the Undead Champions. They rattled their bones and moved to strike. Oscar was able to dodge all but one of the blows. With his lowered Mitigation stat, the Undead Champion delivered a hefty blow to his health bar. But it was of little consequence. At most, they would get only one extra turn than he was accustomed to. Unless he completely whiffed every attack, there was no way that they could kill him faster than he could kill them.

Another Amatsu no Homura flew out. He delivered another powerful blow to their ranks, leaving them all at red health bars. The Undead Champions retaliated. Two of them managed to flank him and score critical blows to the Azure Crusader. He winced in pain as they removed their spears from his body. Even though he knew that they couldn't kill him before he killed them, watching his health bar plummet like this was just a bit concerning. This may wind up being his last combat encounter for the day. Seeing the damage potential of these creatures was enough to shake his resolve. While he was more than confident that he could kill this bunch, he wasn't so sure that he would be able to take on another group at such heavily-reduced health. Perhaps he would feel better after the fight. Or perhaps not. He'd only know when he got there.

His third and final Amatsu no Homura flew out. Oscar managed to cleave through and slay all but one of the Undead Champions. Taking lessons from previous engagements, he waited until the creature lashed out at him before collecting his loot. No reason to let his health dip any lower if he could avoid it. He managed to keep the creature at bay long enough to collect his items. With that done, he could breathe easy that a former 4-on-1 situation was now a one-on-one brawl. Except, it wouldn't be too much of a brawl, all things considered. The creature had less than 10 percent of its total health remaining while Oscar was still well over half. He wasn't even in the yellow yet. A stiff breeze would knock the creature over. But, on the off chance he missed, he could deal with an attack from one creature much easier than he could deal with the attacks of four.

Oscar placed both hands on his sword. He struck with speed and precision, drawing the entire length of his blade along the chest of the undead champion. He cleaved the creature from collarbone to hip, then followed the same path in reverse. Han'ei had always been a reliable Sword Art when it came to finishing off enemies at low health. The Undead Champion shattered like glass, leaving nothing but the loot for Oscar to collect behind. Oscar added the items to his inventory and set about finding a calm place to sit down and allow his energy to regenerate. He was toying with the idea of leaving the place behind, but he felt like he could handle one more round of combat before he had to go home. No sense letting his buffs go to waste or anything. So, he found himself a rock and sprawled out on it. A short nap would do him some good right about now.

And thus, Oscar dreamed. Although he wasn't dreaming of anything in particular. It wasn't a concrete scene playing over in his mind. He dreamed in the abstract. Swirling prismatic patterns danced across the deepest blackness. The abyss gave birth to vibrancy that could be scarcely described by the conscious mind. Colors that were, yet were not. The eyes could only understand a finite mixture of certain hues. This was more. If he woke, he wouldn't have the words to remember the kaleidoscope of brilliance that danced so gracefully before him. And if he did remember, trying to grasp their majesty would almost certainly drive him mad. As beautiful as it was, some things were best left in the dark recesses of the mind, inaccessible through conscious thought. The chaos would burst open the dam of sanity, breaking the mind beyond all repair.

His eyes fluttered open. Oscar stretched and yawned, blissfully unaware of the chaos his mind had produced. To him, his memory of the dream was a blank. The kaleidoscope never existed. As far as he, or anything else was concerned, he hadn't dreamed at all. But his mind felt rested. The chaos had taken the fatigue and negativity and washed it away. In its place was naught but order. Oscar's mind was rested and thus, sharpened. Order cannot exist without Chaos to grant it meaning, after all. With his "muscles" loosened and his "body" rested, Oscar rose to his feet. He had his own goals. And so he proceeded onward, too ignorant to thank the chaos for all it had done for him. It was as if he had been graced by some fourth-dimensional force. But he, too stupid to perceive the majesty of such a thing, felt only what was in front of him. He felt rested but didn't know why. He felt at peace but didn't know how. The blithe rationalization was that he just slept and felt rested. He could not comprehend the whys and hows.

Enemies were plentiful on Floor 14. Oscar didn't have to look very far to find a group of adversaries upon which he could whet his blade. Yukianesa was pulled from her scabbard slowly, glinting in the dim light of the floor. There wasn't much in the way of sunlight. It was as if the floor were stuck in twilight. His blade took on an emerald green hue as he rushed forward. As he dashed, he performed two warm-up slashes. Then, he stopped short of the group and whipped his blade around his body three times. He cleaved through their ranks, dealing heavy damage to the lot of them. He nimbly dodged all but one of their blows. The spear caught him in the thigh and rapidly drained his health. He hopped backward, wrenching the tip of the spear from his "flesh." Oscar scowled as he instinctively placed his hand over the wound to stop the bleeding that never came. Eventually, the pain subsided. Oscar refocused on the enemy, determined not to be skewered again.

Yukianesa sang as she cleaved through the air. That high-pitched ringing sound would toll the doom of the enemies aligned before him. The razor-sharp edge cleaved straight through the undead. All of them were knocked down into the red following the second Amatsu no Homura. They lashed out with their spears, trying in vain to catch the elusive azure-clad man. Their programming had them attacking wildly. It merely made them all the more easy to dodge. They might as well have been aiming for the air, because that was all they hit. Their interlocking barrage of thrusts certainly looked deadly, but Oscar was rested. His mind was sharper and his senses were more in tune with the flow of combat. He was a blur as he danced between their blows. He exhibited pure grace with the way he moved. No wasted motion. Brutally efficient. Without a single misstep, he evaded them and then he hopped back out of danger. He affirmed his grip upon his weapon and made ready for the final round.

He was too quick for them, it seemed. Though he was some distance away, it took a few seconds for that fact to sink in. They struck blindly and furiously until it finally dawned upon them that he was too far away to reach. Then, one by one, the undead ceased their attacks. And that was just what Oscar had been waiting for. He surged forward, his blade taking on yet another verdant glow. Before they could react, Oscar blitzed into their midst and performed the final Amatsu no Homura. He struck like lightning, each slice coming out a mere instant before the other. When all was said and done, Oscar sheathed his blade. At that moment, the creatures around him shattered like glass. Oscar exhaled slowly and collected his items. That was enough grinding for one day. It was time to go home. Thrusting both hands into his pockets, Oscar whistled a joyful tune as he headed for the Teleportation Platform.

He had some errands to run before he headed home. First was a stop down to his shop on Floor 1. He had a few regular customers that would sorely miss his cooking if he wasn't there to provide it. Bahr especially. He opened up his shop and headed into the kitchen. No sooner had he set everything up did the bell toll, signifying that someone had entered his shop. His first customer for the day. He took their order, prepared their food, and sent them on their way. He would toil for hours until the last customer left for the day. Then he would make one final meal, close up shop, and head next door, leaving dinner for his friend on the front counter. Without a word, he made his exit, returning to the Teleportation Platform. His familiar bounded off behind him, excited about the prospect of going home after such a long day's outing. That was a sentiment that Oscar certainly shared.

A short warp later, Oscar was greeted by a rush of mountain air. He was happy to finally be on his home floor. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been so hard-pressed. Even though he wasn't what one would consider "hard-pressed" in the slightest today, his health dropping so low was a rare enough occurrence that it warranted some notice. He made the short trip from Deepedge to his manor in the wilderness. His familiar bounded up towards the front door and sat down, wagging its two tails in anticipation. Oscar smiled and hurried himself along, not wanting to keep such a good dog waiting. His eye entered the lock and he turned it. The door opened inward and his familiar darted inside. Oscar was greeted by the warmth and familiar smell of his home at last. He closed his eyes and drank it in. Indeed, it was good to be home.
