Oscar hadn't really put his new weapon through the paces just yet. He'd managed to get his hands on a Demonic Weapon, courtesy of the recent event. Despite that, there hadn't been much of an occasion to really see what the weapon could do. And so he aimed to rectify that. Oscar found himself on Floor Four. There was a field boss there called <<The Night's King>>. He'd heard rumors that it had a special ability that reduced the damage players dealt. Normally, that would be rather counter-intuitive to the whole plan of staying alive. The longer it took to kill something, the greater chance that they could, you know, kill you. But Oscar found himself growing less and less concerned about staying alive and more concerned about enjoying the life he had right now. He just needed something to make him feel alive.

The chill of Floor Four wasn't something one could find themselves growing easily accustomed to. It would take much more time than Oscar had devoted to this floor to become acclimated to it. But, he had no intention of remaining here any longer than he needed to. Besides, once the battle began in earnest, he would be plenty warmed by the heat of battle. As he approached the King's throne, his way was blocked by the it's minions. Four Frost Wights barred his path, their deadly weapons ready to repel the invader. Oscar sighed, his face contorting into a look of disgust as he made ready to fight them. The only purpose they served was to slow him down.

He rushed forward, a dark blur against a backdrop of ice and snow. His golden battleaxe left a trail of white light behind him as he charged the wights. Once in range, he made two mighty swings - left and right. Then, he buried his axe in the nearest wight. The force of the impact caused the creature to buckle and slam into the ground, dislodging an explosion of ice and snow. His vision obfuscated by the burst of white, Oscar was unable to see the attacks coming. He bit back a swear as one of the wight's hand axe buried itself deep into Oscar's shoulder. He dropped one hand away from his axe and drove it hard into the wight's jaw, sending it flying from the cloud of frost with a single blow. The other hadn't been so lucky and lashed out blindly in Oscar's general direction, missing him entirely.

Though he had suffered plenty of damage, Oscar still had the upper hand. With plenty of health and more than half of his energy left, Oscar waited patiently for the cloud of ice and snow to clear. The moment he could clearly make out his targets, he struck. His Shining Battleaxe carved a trail of white through the air, illuminating the creatures standing before him. The creatures recoiled from the light, making them sitting ducks as Oscar aimed to end this little skirmish with a single blow. His weapon carved through them as if they were made of paper. They shattered like glass and scattered on the winds. Oscar looked onwards towards the throne and took a deep breath. As much as he wanted to charge in and end things, the wights had caused him to spend far too many resources on the fight. He needed his energy back before he could do any sort of boss-slaying.

And so, Oscar waited. There wasn't much else that he could do, really. He began to weigh the pros and cons of simply stocking himself with copious amounts of vitality snacks for times such as these. It would certainly keep him from needing to sit on his hands while his energy regenerated. But at the same time, he wasn't exactly sure he could sustain such an undertaking. He already had an aversion to grinding mobs mindlessly for hours. There was simply no way that he could maintain the Col and Material costs necessary to streamline the energy regeneration process every time he went out on an outing. At the very least, his little bit of introspection kept his mind busy as his energy ticked up one point. So at least he had that going for him. Now he just needed to wait for the other 35 points to regenerate and he would be good to go.

One good thing about needing to wait on his energy to restore was that his health would also tick back up. That being said, if the rumors were true, he didn't exactly have the health to withstand more than one hit from the Night's King. He'd just have to be on his toes and on his guard to make sure that he didn't wind up dead on this little excursion. All things being considered though, this boss was nothing like the Terra Firma was. And he'd handled that one just fine. He wasn't about to let his nerves get to him when he'd already slain a much more powerful foe. Of course, there was still The Absolute Zero he needed to contend with, but that was a whole different beast. The idea of being frozen in place without his Evasion bonuses didn't really sit too well with Oscar. He'd need to approach that particular quest with a healthier amount of caution.

Oscar HP 654/660 | EN 66/66 | DMG 13 | ACC 3 | EVA 3 | MIT 44

His energy was full and Oscar was ready to rock. Or so he thought. He kept eyeing his lowered health bar with caution. He might be a thrill-seeking fool willing to put his life on the line for bragging rights, but he definitely didn't want to die. There was something about approaching the boss fight with less than 90 percent health that just had him on edge. Even though he knew that the extra health wouldn't help him in the grand scheme of things, he would simply feel a little better with another round of health regeneration. As a trained psychologist, Oscar wasn't one to discount the effects of positive vibes when undertaking something challenging. Better to go in with his head completely in the game than to have that nagging worry about his health dancing around in his mind, preventing him from fully focusing on the task at hand.

Explode Catapult[x14] to Night's King 127718 BD5+3. Deal 118 DMG.

Night's King HP 332/450 | DMG 350 | MIT 50 MD4-3. Miss.

Energy was full. Health was at about 99 percent. If there was ever a time to get going, it was now. There was still a bit of a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that his health bar should be completely full before engaging with a boss such as the Night's King. But Oscar didn't really pay it much mind. Instead, he pushed onward, up the rough-hewn stairs carved into the side of the mountain. Eventually, he reached the top. An arena of permafrost stretched out before him. At the opposite end there was a throne and sitting upon it was a heavily-armored wight staring unerringly towards the entrance. When Oscar stepped into the arena, the Night's King came to life and rose from its frozen throne. They both strode calmly towards one another, their eyes fixed fiercely upon the other.

They stopped about 20 feet from the other, both of them readying their weapons in tandem. Oscar, however, rushed forward. He wasn't about to give up any sort of advantage he might have by waiting for the Night's King to make the first move. He drew his axe back and sliced left to right, his axe carving through the King's chest like paper. Then, he reversed direction and struck from right to left, carving a jagged X in the boss's chest. He reared back and brought his axe down for a final powerful blow. A loud clang resounded through the arena, the force of the impact exploding outward and wiping the arena clean of any powder. Using its handaxe, the King deftly blocked Oscar's final blow. With unnerving strength, it repelled Oscar's axe and stepped into its attack. Oscar was just barely able to get his balance back and dodge the blow at the last moment.

Night's King HP 132/450 | DMG 350 | MIT 50 MD9. Deal 341 DMG

Oscar's foot slammed into the ground as he brought his axe forward. The ice beneath his feet splintered and cracked from his weight. His axe took on a golden glow as he sliced through the Night's King yet again. The Holy Enhancement on his weapon triggered and explosion of light that dealt significant damage to the Night's King. Despite that, the King advanced, its axe ominously in the moonlight. The next thing Oscar knew was that the creature's axe was buried in his chest and his health bar had taken one hell of a hit. He used the shaft of his axe to dislodge the King's weapon from his chest and then kicked it away. He definitely couldn't take another hit like that. The rumors had certainly been true about this particular boss. To top it all off, Oscar was beginning to notice that he was doing slightly less than his normal damage.

He looked at the King's health bar and then back to his own. Next round would decide this fight, one way or another. The threat of death was never more real than in this moment. Yet, Oscar had never felt more alive. Time seemed to slow as his heart rate quickened. The sudden rush of blood was exactly what Oscar was looking for. Death was the furthest thing from his mind right now. He felt at his most alive when he was half dead, it seemed. There was a small voice in his head that was trying to point out the unhealthiness of it all, but Oscar was too into it to listen.

This was it! The final round. Only one of them would walk out of this fight. Oscar tightened his grip on his axe and rushed forward. As he did, the blade of his Shining Battleaxe erupted with a golden-white aura. He struck from right to left, then left to right. He reared back and brought his axe down for a final crushing blow. This time, the Night's King had not been given enough quarter to block it. His axe fell down upon the King's shoulder, the crushing force of the attack slamming it into the frozen arena hard. The impact caused a massive crack in the exact center of the arena, fractures spiderwebbing across the dark ice. The King looked up and grasped at Oscar, trying in vain to deliver one final blow to its Executioner. But moments later, it shattered like glass and was scattered on the wind. Oscar, despite suffering heavy damage, had been victorious.

The threat neutralized, Oscar staggered backwards. He gasped for air as he came back down to earth. Almost instantly, his mind flooded with what-ifs. Mental self-flagellation about how he was a fool for pushing himself so far. Risking so much. There were people that cared about him, here and in the real world. If he got himself killed, what would they do? And though he was cognizant of all of this, he still wanted to chase the dragon again. It was like a drug for him. He produced the Teleportation Crystal from his pack. His lifeline if things went sour. If he ever found himself in a situation where he needed to use it, would he be able to? Would he not be too distracted by the thrill of combat? Would he be able to put that high aside for the sake of self-preservation? These were all questions Oscar needed to answer. Though he stood victorious over the Night's King, it was a hollow victory. He couldn't trust himself not to commit to something he couldn't come back from.

God what was wrong with him? Ever since Cordelia rejected him, he had been taking increasingly ballsy moves. It was almost as if he had an actual deathwish. Would have ever tried this boss by himself if he and Cordelia were still talking? As he walked back to town, Oscar had to consider his motives for a moment. Was he putting his life on the line for the sheer thrill of it or was it some deep-seated, hidden response to his rejection. Oscar liked to think that he was just a bit stronger than that. He'd never let a rejection send him into a tailspin before. He looked inward, giving his motivations proper scrutiny. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that he wasn't a lovesick puppy pining over a woman who clearly didn't want to be with him. He was just a dumb dummy, doing dumb dummy things. It was less depression and more following along in Bahr's footsteps. Clearly he was the one with the deathwish.

Oscar HP 423/660 | EN 66/66 | DMG 12 | ACC 3 | EVA 3 | MIT 44

Oscar arrived back in town in short order. There was still plenty of daylight left, leaving Oscar wondering what to do with himself. As he approached the teleportation platform, he decided that he had enough health for a quick grinding session. His pockets were running a little low on Col anyway. Plus, he really wanted to see if he could find some nice loot with a possible Unique Enhancement on it. Of course, he would be hard-pressed to find a weapon as solid as his new Shining Battleaxe. But still. It could be better. So, Oscar stepped onto the platform and headed up to Floor 21. There, he would find himself some enemies ready to meet their end at the edge of his axe. Spiders, mostly. Unnerving as they were, they were the most efficient enemies to grind for the loot he wanted. Oscar wasn't about to push his luck on any of the higher floors right now.

No sooner had Oscar stepped out of town was he swarmed by a group of spiders who all wanted his giblets. But they couldn't have his giblets. They were Oscar's giblets and they were not loose at all. Tight giblets, one would say. Oscar readied his axe and delivered a powerful <<Explode Catapult>> to the arachnids whomst were chasing his precious giblets. He did standard damage to all but one. But he didn't miss that one. Oh no. He whacked it with the power of Jesus so hard that it's mother would feel it. One of the spiders smacked him, but was unsuccessful at attacking the giblets. That was just fine with Oscar. He liked his giblets unassaulted. He smirked and readied his axe for the next round. A question that had perplexed scholars, and Oscar, for generations popped into his mind. Today Oscar would find out what that spider booty do.

Another round. More giblet protecting for Oscar. The spiders were eyeing him menacingly. They clearly wanted his giblets to be loose. He did not like loose giblets. He disliked them so much that he decided to exterminate the spiders with extreme prejudice. Oscar summoned up his energy and activated his Explode Catapult Sword Art. He struck to and fro before slamming his axe down on the spiders. An explosion of stone and dirt rattled out in all directions, puncturing the spiders. Three of them shattered like glass. The other one lashed out and tried to sink his fangs into Oscar's shoulder. Oscar dipped out of the way, his giblets safe for another round. He wheeled back around and readied his weapon to strike once again. While he did so, Oscar collected his loot from the slain spiders. A bunch of Col and some materials. Nice.

Only one spider left. Oscar was ready to insure the sanctity of his giblets once and for all. Electing to use a weaker Sword Art, Oscar rushed in. Instead of Explode Catapult, he chose to use Crescent Avalanche. His axe collided with the arachnid adversary, cleaving straight through it. The spider shattered like glass and was scattered on the winds. Oscar put his axe away and collected his loot. His giblets were safe. So he hustled back to town before any more spiders could appear to assault his giblets and attempt to loosen them. Once back inside the safe zone, Oscar decided to wander around town for a bit. He hadn't really done much in the way of sightseeing. Oscar whistled a tune as he strolled around. It was a good day so far. He'd killed a boss, did some self-reflection, and even got a little Col for his dwindling wallet. All-in-all, it was a win.

  • 2 weeks later...

All that remained was to run some final errands and settle down for the night. Oscar meandered through the streets back towards the central plaza. As he walked, his familiar padded along after him, both heads laser focused straight ahead. There was something about being in such a high level area that set both of them on-edge. But, they were safe and would soon be back in familiar territory. A few moments later, the Teleportation Platform was in view. Though they had to weave through a crowd of people to get to it. It was slow-going. Everyone seemed to be going the opposite direction as them. He felt like a fish trying to swim upstream. But, soon enough, he made it through the wall of people and was able to proceed unimpeded towards the platform. Of course, he took the time to look around him and really absorb the sights before he did so. Really taking in his surroundings was therapeutic and kept him in a good headspace, something he desperately needed to remain in right now.

Instead of going straight for the Teleportation Platform, Oscar decided to wander around the plaza for a bit. Due to it being such a high-level area, it was frequented by many up-and-coming players hoping to break into the Frontlines. Players like himself and Bahr. As such, it was a bustling hub filled with aspiring warriors and the merchants who supplied them. Definitely a far cry from the veritable ghost town that was Floor One. It was simply the nature of things, really. As the Frontliners pushed the floors, the lower floors - and the people who resided there - would be forgotten and abandoned. He made a mental note not to forget about the people he helped down on Floor One, even as he pushed higher and higher in the ranks. They desperately needed some hope and Oscar didn't want to be the one to take it away from them by disappearing like so many others.

With his wandering done, Oscar stepped onto the platform. After fiddling with the interfaces for a while, he eventually dialed into his desired location. One swift button prompt later and he was gone from Floor 21 in a flash of white light. Moments later, he was stepping off of the platform in the Town of Beginnings. Compared to his previous location, the Town was mostly abandoned. Indeed, the only thing that kept people coming here was the Orphanage and the small shopping district that had been set up in the most backwater part of the town. It wasn't much, but it had been Oscar's home for the past two years. Even though it was a ghost town, Oscar wouldn't abandon it. Just because his level was higher didn't mean his nature changed with it. Home was more than four walls and a roof. There were memories here. There was purpose here. Even if he never made it to the Frontlines, Oscar felt he could do plenty of good here.

After a short jaunt from the town square, Oscar stepped into his shop. As soon as he had set his axe and coat to the side, several people crossed his threshold. He greeted them enthusiastically and ducked into the kitchen. They were all regulars so he knew just what they wanted. Oscar served them their food and watched for a moment as they tucked in. Joy and laughter filled the walls of his shop as the people mingled with one another as well as Oscar. It was easy to forget the situation they were in when presented with some good food and company. After they left, Oscar cleaned up and prepared a final, larger order. Once it was done and added to his inventory, he gathered his things and left. Before going to the plaza, he took a detour and stopped by the Orphanage. He left a large order of hot dogs and fries just inside the foyer and then slipped out.

There was something about doing a good deed that really helped Oscar feel good about himself. It was worth noting the positive correlation between compassion and good mental health. He had a bit of a spring to his step as he headed for the Teleportation Platform. He stepped onto the stone dias, dialed in his destination, and was gone. This time, he emerged on Floor Seven. There was just enough sunlight left for Oscar to make it home before dark, thankfully. The way could be treacherous in the dark. Oscar walked home quickly, his familiar in tow. Both of them seemed to be equally excited to get home. Home meant food and sleep, something both of them needed immensely. Soon enough, Oscar was stepping onto the marble walkway of his manor. The sun had almost completely disappeared over the horizon. He made a beeline for the door and unlocked it. Leeroy and Jenkins dashed inside and a smiling Oscar followed suit.
