[F09-SP] Through the Fire and Flames -- <<Training Your Friend>>

Recommended Posts

In the past, it was the cold. In the present, it would be warmth. In the future? That’s for another day for NIGHT to decide. Not only did her rage for the goats drive her here, Nyanko’s strange ire for them also pushed her forward, to hunt on this floor in particular when she could be enjoying the climate of another.

She hadn't exactly told him yet, but today, Nyanko would learn how to fight and hunt beside her.

He seemed big enough to do so, anyway. It was exciting, healthy even, for a cat to learn how to spread his... claws... out to stalk and pounce. When the warrior noticed her familiar awake, she pulled him out the bag and set him onto the warm, rocky floor. "Gimmie a second," she mentioned to him, pulling out a few potions and gulping them down quickly, trying not to think about saving them for another day she might not be able to see.

The bottles faded into light in her hands. Pretty. Maybe Nyanko would be interested in playing with them another day.

"Okay," she spoke aloud, in an attempt to reassure herself. Her kitten perked up from his seat on the ground, coiled up neatly with his tail covering his paws. "We're gonna hunt down those goats today, Nyanko." At the sound of that, he meowed, a face of enthusiasm as he got up on all four paws once again. "I hope you're feeling up to walking today," she added, checking her messages. "Because we're also going to be doing some sight seeing for our friends."

He cocked his head at that, eyes bright with curiosity. "Bistro," she stated, her lips turned up in a smile. "She's looking for information about this floor. Something about landmarks... <The Profaned Peak>?"

That has got to be one of the weirdest names I've seen so far in here...

"Also, if it helps..." NIGHT continued, pulling out a pack of cooked meat, sealed with translucent paper. With a careful hand, she unraveled part of it, while Nyanko curled around his owner's feet before standing up entirely, leaning against her knee. The cat let out a loud meow, entirely interested in the food, and NIGHT snickered, ripping out a small chunk of meat for her familiar. "Yeah, yeah," she commented with a grin, dropping the piece on the ground. "Here you go, enjoy. You'll get more when we get into combat."

The kitten, upon noticing the meat fall onto the floor, rushed to it, sniffing gingerly, before eating it with glee. NIGHT was almost certain he didn't manage to hear what she had said. She laughed anyway, beginning to walk away. "C'mon, we don't got all day," she called out to him, and Nyanko picked up the small chunk in his mouth in response, running alongside her, trying to match her pace.

you wanna give us the spiel about what the mountain's like? makes walking less tedious when i've got smth to do

Sure.

The Profaned Peak was one of those places that info brokers and veteran players alike were well aware of, but it held little to no standing to most to even account for consideration during their travels and discussions. Rumours are that there's a throne at the top of the mountain's plateau, the seat of majesty sitting in the midst of a large lake of lava.

Throne aside, I've heard that there's a crown on it. If it were real, hey, taking it's gotta be free money, right? I'm counting on you to investigate it for real -- and try not to get caught by any powerful monsters, alright? I know you can hold your own, but the whole setup just seems suspicious to begin with.

Hit me up when you're there.

The trek to the Profaned Peak wasn't going to be as tough as the trip to Cerberus, she'd hoped. But with the terrain being desolate and unremarkable, no matter where she went or how long it took, it would still be mind-bogglingly exhausting to get through the place. If it hadn't been for her revenge, she would've enjoyed the hospitality of some other floor. Maybe check out Floor 7 for a change...

Huh? Oh. An eagle in the middle of the road. Perfect timing. Nyanko was following along just fine, right? Squatting down a little a ways from the creature, she brought out her snack pack for her kitten. At the sound of crumpling, his ears perked up, and the cat was standing at attention, curious. NIGHT pointed to the bird, nodding with determination. And Nyanko did the same, before running and pouncing-- on where the eagle was. The two watched the bird fly away, wallowing in the utter disappointment of their first hunt.

NIGHT and Nyanko continued to train their eyes to the eagle that had taken wing, it soaring through the air. Ah, how majestic a beast it was. Maybe where it was going would tell them what else there would be on this floor. As the cat chattered at the bird, his owner slung her arms behind her back, lazily watching the creature. "Yeah," she said. "Me too, Nyanko."

Oh, it was coming back now. Maybe they were already on the right path. It wouldn't hurt to take a quick break to watch it, I guess.

... It's... getting closer...?

...--It's attacking us!!!!

"Duck!" The adventurer screamed, dropping down beside her familiar and picking him up, rolling away from where the eagle was looking to swoop in at. The bird shrilled, diving at where its attackers once were, before turning back upwards, ready to dive once again. NIGHT hissed, pulling her blade out as she got up, releasing her cat from her grasp. "C'mon, Nyanko. Try and tackle that beast, okay?"

Nyanko was quiet and adept. As the eagle attempted to strike once again, he patted the ground with his paws. Taking one leap into the air, he grabbed the bird with his paws, before shoving it in his mouth, his fangs clamping down on the large prey, before landing on his feet. Slick and fast, his feral cat instincts showing.

Perfect. As NIGHT grinned, she raised her blade. It started to glow a bright white. "Careful, kitty," she warned, and Nyanko let loose the eagle from its powerful jaws, the bird squawking and shifting, still trying to escape. Landing and rolling on the dirt, it tried to fly again and that's when the adventurer cut through the side of the bird, bashing its edge into the creature with a number of motions. The eagle, now wounded, stumbled away on its feet before retreating to the sky once more, attempting to steady itself as it did.

A bird out of the hand wasn't going to stop NIGHT from taking her target out, though. When it took another dive at her, she evaded its attack with a sidestep, readying yet another sword art for the next time it would lunge. Nyanko watched the dance of the two combatants whilst crouching down low to the ground, forming a black fuzzy shadow blob on the ground. All the adventurer needed now was a well-timed blow to shatter the bird's form into pieces.

It swooped in, after circling around for a bit. NIGHT shifted her blade upwards, just by a hair, and watched the blade in front of her glow. Time slowed as the raptor swerved, beak pointed towards her cheek, and as she moved to the side, Astral Hell swinging her blade to follow her target.

One strike. A splinter of a second for one quick thrust. Two -- followed by two spikes. Three, the last slash, and the bird's form vanished before her blade could piece it through, light scattering on the weapon's surface instead.

NIGHT exhaled, stepping out of her stance to stand. "Well, that takes care of that," she commented, returning her blade back to its sheathe. Her eyes went to Nyanko, who was squatting a good distance away watching the final strike go down on the bird. "Why're you over there?" The woman squatted, opening up a palm as a gesture. "C'mere, Nyanko. Sksksk..."

The cat looked curiously at her, before stretching as he was rising from his spot, trotting over and sniffing the area where the eagle was lounging around at. NIGHT tilted her head, wondering what might've caught her kitten's attention. "Is there something here, you think? Are you gonna go treasure hunter on me?"

"Prrk!" A noise of refusal? Maybe? She brushed Nyanko's fur a little, before rummaging through as much dirt as the terrain let her lift up. It wasn't a lot, and NIGHT quickly reached the rocky limits of the ground quick.

"Nothing here, buddy," the adventurer quipped, dusting off her gloves and kicking the dirt back into place. Nyanko looked a little downcast when she said that, kneading the dirt to pat it down evenly.

Instead, NIGHT pulled out her meat of treat and a cat toy. It was a little soon, maybe, but she wanted to get her cat a bit of exercise and training for combat before they ran into another creature again. Tucking the package under her arm, she kneeled, waving the toy around for a bit. She tried to hide her smiles at how awkward this was out of nowhere, but also how cute Nyanko would be if he just starting jumping around.

Instead, the cat, with wide eyes, merely clambered up her legs, wanting to get a better sniff at the pack of treats. "Hey," she commented, returning it to her inventory with a gesture of her hand. "That's illegal!"

The duo traversed further into the wilderness, the kitten keeping an eye out for their environment more than NIGHT herself. Before long, they found themselves at the base of their destination, where a long, steep road wound around the mountain, challenging passers-by to climb it. The adventurer tapped her foot as she scouted around the rock face, inhaling when she wasn't capable of spotting what she wanted to find. So, no cave?

She took another hike around the mountain, going only so far before she returned to her original entry spot, hands on her hips. Her familiar tagged along, pacing back and forth as her owner did. "Nyanko," she started, huffing in annoyance as she stopped. "We're going to have to climb this the good old fashion way." With a finger, the soon-to-be mountaineer pointed over to the narrow slant. The kitten narrowed his eyes at it, tail hanging low. "I know, I know."

"Okay, okay. Up you go..." NIGHT heaved the whining kitten up on her shoulders, the baby trying to stabilize himself before sitting down. He nuzzled back, rubbing his head under her chin as the adventurer continued on, a faint smile on her face. "You doin' alright there?"

"Mew!"

"Okay, that's good."

But soon, Nyanko leapt off her shoulder, sending her into a panic with the mountainside being so perilous. "Hey-- Nyanko, what the heck?" She felt herself stumble a little, her foot meeting the edge of the path, and she lowered herself closer to the ground. Her cat was on a rocky ledge, his eyes pointed ahead of them. Threats sighted -- two lava elementals -- and the cat was going to have none of that on his account.

He chirped, and NIGHT understood once her sights fell upon their glowing, burning bodies. With incredible dexterity, precision and a bit of luck, her swings ambushed the two lounging elementals, sending them into a startle.

If there was anything about Lava Elementals she could take away, it was their burning, blistering heat, and their unrelenting force when angered. The two patrolling enemies shrieked in horror when they found a trespasser on their land. As they began to charge at her, a quick turn of the player's blade primed her hilt ready for another sword art -- immensely quick and powerful, Tempest crushed the dirt in front of her, leaving fissure marks in its wake. The guards had their liquid-form shaking, sizzling into nothing as they dissolved, partly into crystal ash, and partly into the cracks on the floor.

NIGHT sighed, keeping her sword and picking Nyanko up from the ledge. "There, there." With a hand, she pet the cat and cuddled him close, a soft purring emanating from the creature. "We're nearly there," she mentioned, continuing her strides up the mountain. "I'm gonna have to look around a bit up there, so be good and careful, alright?"

At the plateau, she set Nyanko down at a side, gently ruffling his fur. The kitten beeped in response, following along until he noticed the lava his owner was travelling to. Instead, he took a seat, beginning to groom himself while waiting.

Ample time for NIGHT to investigate, she guessed. Across the stone walkway she went, careful not to trip. The throne laid in wait for her on a rocky platform, the gold and silver reflections of the crown ebbing in waves as she approached. The area seemed scorched and desolate -- marks on the crown could be identified, where fire licked at it, causing the jewelry's surface to suffer. The throne, on the other hand, seemed to have holes bored into it, sharp and porous. Reaching relative safety as her feet met the platform, she began to message her contact.

Can you pick it up?

The moment of truth. Her hand grasped the weathered piece of jewelry by one of its sharper points. Half expecting some resistance, she tugged at it with the gentlest force she could muster. And again. And again.

It came off easily on the fourth try, shocking nearly nobody except herself. It was heavier than expected, though, and as NIGHT tried to store it in her inventory, that's when the system applied some resistance to her gesture. A notice window appeared. System action not allowed. Furrowing a brow, she composed another message to Bistro.

NIGHT and Nyanko both watched the crown sail through the air, spinning, reflecting the light off the lava pool it was found on. The cat, still sat in his spot, casually watched it fly past him, bouncing off the ground, before dipping over the edge of the mountain, vanishing out of sight.

"Oh. Oh god. Oh no. Crap..." NIGHT pinched the bridge of her nose, wincing at her sudden outbreak of non-reason, trying to shake off a looming sense of dread encroaching on her. "Okay okay okay," the adventurer chanted, trying to rush over the narrow stone walkway before planning out her next move.

Nyanko approached her, coiling around her legs when she reached the other side, purring contently, seemingly clueless about the mistake of events that had occurred earlier. It was all the adventurer could do to pick up her familiar and start rushing down the mountain, trying to seek out where the crown would end up at, if it weren't already damaged from the fall.

And who would be waiting at the bottom of the mountain? As NIGHT skid to a halt, running out from a bend, she gasped when she spotted the crown jewel -- in the mouth of one of those goats she'd spotted the other day. Damn, not again!

"Mew! Meeewww!" Nyanko started crying out, jumping from NIGHT's arms and rushing up towards them. "Wait--!" the adventurer called out, pulling her sword from its sheathe, readying her blade for another large attack. As the sword glowed bright, she yelled out once more, "Nyanko, watch out!"

The kitten turned around, eyes wide at the realization. He leapt, behind a section of the mountain that jutted out neatly, before the adventurer's first strike cut at the goats, notifying them of a hunter in their midst.

Calamity Disaster continued to play out, slicing at their horns and leaving their marks, and slashing away at their bristling fur. It didn't take long to lower their health to orange from green, but NIGHT knew they were going to be persistent.

That's what she told herself, anyway. It justified the immediate follow up action she'd used before. With Tempest's help, the ground shook, force from the powerful blow stunning the goats in their place. As they bleated their last wails, the crown toppled to the floor, out of one of the goats' mouths. Their body began scattering into the wind, and Nyanko waddled out of his hiding spot, looking incredibly proud for no particular reason.

NIGHT couldn't help but grin upon seeing her kitten find peace with the outburst. She sure couldn't help but feel something sinister underneath the liking to chase and attack the goats, though, but even now she had a personal vendetta. Maybe she should reel it in a little.

The adventurer picked up the crown, examining it over to ascertain its durability. Looks clean. A ping came up on her interface, a subtle reminder that she hadn't returned a reply back to her agent just yet. Better get to it.

Carry on. Also, got it.

Now with that settled, NIGHT went over her checklist again. Revenge, check. Scouting, check. Training? The adventurer gave Nyanko another glance. Nope, can't check that off just yet. The kitten was still curious about everything, though, and when he noticed her watching him, he stared back blankly, gave a cheerful meow back, before scampering over, awaiting his owner's instructions.

Just another time then. She pulled out the cat toy from earlier, remembering to save the meat this time, and crouched down. "Here, here," she cooed, watching Nyanko's eyes track the fluffy feathers. He raise a paw, almost ready to lunge at them, before sitting back on his hind quarters, remembering his prior instructions during training. NIGHT gave him a wry smile.

"Okay, fair enough," she responded, returning the toy to her inventory. "But today's training is all about hunting, Nyanko. You're a bigger cat now," her hand went to his head, rubbing it gently. "Bigger than the kitten I found you as, even if it's only just slightly. You can do it, I'm sure." The cat gave her a curt meow, eyes stoic in understanding, rising from his seated position. "Right," she added, standing up herself. "Let's keep going. Today's a good day for hunting, and that means I'm getting training in myself, too."
