[PP-F1] Following a calling <<Earning a Living: Alchemist>>

Recommended Posts

So Haydrian decided to follow the path that Zakariah had mentioned to him. And so, he had just finished up in Evangeline's tent. She seemed a bit happier then most people were. Must have been all the ingredients and potions that she is always working with then. Apparently he was gonna have to gather materials so far before he could even practice what he really wanted to do. And if things seemed to go the way they normally did. He'd just spend hours searching for materials and then make whatever he was asked to make on the first try. She wanted Haydrian to gather 5 materials. Which wasn't gonna be a problem, but was he really gonna need all five for this? Well, it doesn't matter much now since he's been tasked with a quest and has to see it fulfilled completely. Even if everything wasn't necessary, and Zakariah had held onto all the extra supplies he had brought back with him. Hopefully Evangeline won't do that to Haydrian.

Well, there is no time like the present to start working on the future. So Haydrian made his way out of the city to start looking for some Materials. Considering he was becoming an alchemist, maybe starting with some herbs will be the way to go forward. Apparently on the way to Haydrian's favorite grove of trees, there was a small lake. Normally a lot of wildlife and plants lived thrived in an area like this. And so Haydrian made his way over to the shore of the lake and started to look around a bit. Looking through the shrubbery and lifting up small logs, Haydrian was eventually able to find a ranarr weed. Or so he liked to call it, it didn't really have a name, it just popped up in his inventory as a material. But he figured he'd still like to give it a name since he as starting his journey to become a professed alchemist.

After searching the through the bank for awhile. It didn't seem like there were anymore herbs over here. At least on this side of the lake. Haydrian did notice that there was a pier that extended out to nearly the center of the lake. He figured he would give fishing a try. Haydrian had saw that there were some small fishing swimming around his feet when he had found the ranarr weed earlier. So Haydrian walked out onto the pier and pulled out a rod and some bait. Which to his surprise, it was kept in his bag. Almost any tool he could think of, would somehow materialize into reality for him. So he cast out his line and waited. It wasn't the first time Haydrian had gone fishing, and he knew that things normally didn't bite quickly. So he figured he might be here for a little while, but that didn't bother him. Fishing was always quite relaxing.

While sitting there waiting, Haydrian remembered the time his family went to Hawaii for vacation when he was younger. The things he'd done while he was there, he would never forget. He had gone horseback riding through the valley on the big island, saw a flower bloom that only bloomed one day out of the year. They had been so beautiful. He also remembered when he had gone deep sea fishing with father, that was one of the few good memories he had of him. Those fish had been hard to catch since the boat was moving while you had to reel them in. It took a lot of strength to do that, and Haydrian had only been 13 at the time. Those were good times though. All of a sudden, Haydrian's fishing rod jumped for a second and it brought him back to reality. He thought something had started to bite, but that wasn't the case apparently.

Patience was a key virtue to fishing though Haydrian thought to himself. He would need to stick it out a bit longer anyways. There was a nice cool breeze though. And you know what, there weren't as many worries or responsibilities here in Aincrad as there were back in the real world. Well, if he had died here to a monster, he would also die in real life. But hell, real life was just as scary, with all the things going on around the world, he could easily die just walking outside of his house. He was never one to be political, but he would try and volunteer and help out people whenever he could when he was younger. As Haydrian started to lapse into a daydream again, he line really tugged and was immediately snapped out of it. And so he pulled and pulled on the line till he eventually yanked the fish out of the water.

After what seemed like another hour of just sitting there and waiting for a fish to bite. Haydrian figured it was time to give up on trying to fish for now and move on to possibly other options of harvesting materials for the alchemist. And so Haydrian walked back to shore and started to walk the bank around the lake and figure he'd give it one full rotation before moving on to other places. He was happy that he had been lucky enough to find 2 materials as quickly as he already had. He had heard of other people spending hours before they found one thing. He was happy he wasn't that unlucky. Haydrian found another bed of weeds and started to search through them to see if he could find anymore ranarrs. He might not be super unlucky, but he surely wasn't that lucky either apparently. This was a lake, it had to be bountiful.

Walking around the lake a bit more Haydrian was constantly getting lost in thought, he couldn't believe how quiet and serene it was around the lake. This might be somewhere he would come in the future to just relax. Maybe even go fishing so that way he could still be a bit productive while taking a lazy day. But today was not a lazy day, it was a important day. The day he would become an alchemist. In games, potions always provided some of the biggest buffs in combat, or actually, just about any facet of the game if you knew what things were used for. And people always needed supplies, so this would be a great way for people to know about Haydrian and to build a name for himself. With that in mind, Haydrian set off from the lake to look for new things find for alchemy. Gotta find out how to look at the negatives positively.

After heading out from the lake, Haydrian wandered aimlessly across the plains not knowing exactly what to look for. And then he started to head over the the grove of trees that he went to during his first quest. There were quite a bit of mushrooms there and they would probably be good for his alchemy training. So it took Haydrian about an hour to remember where the grove was exactly at. And after a little bit of searching and meandering, he had found it. Deciding to test his luck again, he started to pick up logs and start looking under them to see if there had been anymore growth in the few days he hadn't been there. Hopefully others hadn't found his small resource area. Either no one had found this place, or he had just gotten lucky again because there it was just starring right at him when he picked up his third log.

Now back towards the middle of the grove at this point, Haydrian decided to take off his armor this time before climbing up the tree to see if there would be less of a difficulty going up this time, or if it would remain the same and realize that the armor didn't hinder him at all. It would be nice if the mechanics would change when he took off his armor, but at the same time, it would be nice to not have to take it off and put it back on again for things. Never know when a monster might attack you. And so, Haydrian climbed the tree and so far it seemed to be the same difficulty as if he had his armor on. When he got to the top of the tree, he looked around for some birds nests. And he did find a few, but with no eggs.

This time Haydrian took his time climbing down this tree cause even though you didn't really feel pain, it wasn't the best experience falling forty feet out of the air. And onto the ground, it still took the air out of you for a few seconds. So after a few minutes of gingerly climbing down this tree, Haydrian finally arrived safely. After that, he put his armor back on and realized he wouldn't have to risk himself in the future due to to weight encumbrance. Which was a good thing to be honest, especially if his life depended on it. So as Haydrian made his way to the other side of the grove slowing looking under fallen trees and rotten logs, he was rewarded yet again with another mushroom. Not a bad day to be out gathering materials. And apparently his luck was holding out also. All he needed was one more material before he would head back to town.

Making his way over to the small ravine, Haydrian had a thought. If he found more materials in this ravine. He would carve out some stairs for himself so that way he didn't have to jump and look like a fool into this ravine. But the time had come while he was thinking that. He had to jump into the ravine and look like a fool. Since it was a decently steep slope, there was no way he was going to keep his footing all the way down. It was maybe a twenty foot slope, but that was besides the point. It would make things easier in the future if he ever came back here. And with his kind of luck, he would probably be coming back. After having to pick himself up, there was a little crack in the side of the wall. He pulled out craven edge to help chip away at it until he found another material!

Haydrian having so much luck. He decided he would follow through with the bet he made earlier. Considering he didn't have to spend so much time looking for materials this time around. He had quite a bit of time to spare anyways if he was comparing how long it took him last time to find the ingredients for Zakariah. And so, Haydrian started to carve out the stairs with Craven Edge. Using his sword arts to help him with shaping the stone. It took a lot of time and energy and Haydrian had to rest frequently to rebuild his stamina from the amount of Sword Arts and maneuvers he was using. It took a solid 3 hours to finish up carving this stone, especially twenty feet of it. But by the time Haydrian had finished, it all came together and looked quite pleasing and safe to use. Now Haydrian no longer had to jump into the ravine. He could easily walk down.

Now with all the materials gathered, Haydrian could finally head back into town and start down a new path. The path towards becoming an alchemist. He had honestly thought he would never become an alchemist as other professions in other games always had a more alluring sound to them. Potion making just didn't seem that exciting, yes you could get buffs and stuff from them. But they were never any special artifacts or really powerful weapons. But almost everyone carried some kind of potion on them, especially a healing potion. Haydrian had figured he wasn't gonna be famous for his work, but it was definitely gonna be profitable. Especially if he could make good healing potions cause they will literally stop people from dying a permanent death in this reality. So, not only could he make a lot of money and prepare himself. He could also be saving the lives of his fellow players, and that meant a lot to him.

What kind of potions were out there?  Haydrian wondered if he could replicate the ones he had gotten from the first quest he had completed. Not only had he gotten healing potions, he also got potions that could increase his damage too. Which made sense, cause there were always potions that could increase your strength which in turn would also increase your damage for a time too. Sometimes there was some really legendary potion that could possibly permanently increase your attributes also. Oh if he could get his hands on one of those, or even through lots of practice, make one himself. He could either become very powerful or very rich, or possibly even both. Now that was something to work towards. But this wasn't only for himself, it was for all the other people that had gotten stuck in this game with him. It wasn't something he had to try and succeed at. It was something he had to succeed at. No doubt about it.

After walking for about an hour, Haydrian had finally made his way back to town. Now he had to remember where Evangeline's laboratory was at. All he had to do was pull up his mini map and look for the quest marker and he would be on his way. Now that it had been about a week since the announcement, the streets weren't as nearly as cluttered with players as there had been on the first couple of days. People were starting to finally get out and start questing and making a name for themselves. Well, no one had really made a name for themselves yet as it really had been only a week. But people were starting to get a move on with things. There had also been a couple Player killings too, which was quite sad since that was actually murder in the game, since they would never be able to respawn again. Haydrian started to think that in the future, he was gonna have to venture out with other people soon if these killings continued to happen.

As Haydrian walked into Evangalin's laboratory, she turned around and said "Were you able to find everything alright sweetie?". Haydrian nodded his head and said " I did, the last time I had to go collect materials was for Zakariah, and that was a pain in the butt." "Ah yes, his beginner quest can be quite a challenge, especially for those who are still learning how to gather materials. Zakariah did mention to me that you might be stopping by later on sometime. He said that you made a healing potion for him and it came out quite well. He was so impressed that he stopped by my shop later on to tell me about and to keep an eye out for ya" Evangaline said. Haydrian was a bit surprised by this, thinking that he had done a good job with Zakariah, but he didn't think he'd go out of his way for someone like Haydrian.

"Now lets pull those materials out and give alchemy a try now" Evangaline said to Haydrian as he stood there shocked. After being brought back from his shock, Haydrian opened up his inventory and started to pull out the materials he had gathered while he was out and about. "This is a great collection of things you were able to put together Haydrian, now let's start with a salve and see how it goes. My table is on the other side of the room and I'll do my best to guide you, but only when it's necessary." So Haydrian walked over to the other side of the room and started to compile everything. As Haydrian started to tinker and grind things up, Evangaline would pipe up if need be, but let him take the lead. The only way to learn is through trial and error, at least, that's what she thought was the best way to teach.

So Haydrian was starting to get a bit frustrated, not only was he failing miserably, but he was also blowing through materials left and right. If he failed every single time, he might run out of supplies and have to go back out and search for more materials. What a drag that would be. Having spent all that time out in the wilderness only for it to mean nothing and then having to spend even more time. Maybe alchemy wasn't for him and that he had just gotten lucky and Zakariah had gotten overly excited about it. Evangaline had noticed that Haydrian was starting to get extremely worked up until she had him step outside and catch his breath and calm down. She understood what it meant to constantly fail. Hell, on a weekly basis she still messed up a bit of her own potions and wasted supplies, but that was the only way to learn.

After a few minutes, she called Haydrian back inside and had him sit down at the workstation. With his head clear and vision in mind, Haydrian had to remember what he was doing this for. There was so much too it, and so many people depended on him. Well not yet, but they were going to eventually. And so, he had to prepare himself mentally for this. Finally he set to work and trying to create this salve properly this time. When minutes had seemed like hours, Haydrian heard Evangalines voice call out to him say "All done! You've done it Haydrian, you've made your first Salve, and it seems like a pretty potent one at that." Haydrian looked up with hope in his, had he actually done it? He thought he was just gonna continue to fail until he ran out of supplies, and at that point, Haydrian was ready to give up on being an Alchemist.

"Well Haydrian, you've done it. You are now officially an Alchemist and you can set up your own shop. No don't worry, you won't be competing with me, there is more then enough work to go around for all of us, and plus, we are only able to make so much every day anyways. So there is always a demand. Now you also need to decide what you want to name your own shop. I'd recommend something that is catchy and memorable as it'll bring business back to you. Now remember to practice everyday so that way you can improve your skills and start making better potions. The better the potion, the more you'll make. Common sense, also, I'd recommend you take that salve to a merchant so you can get it identified for what it actually is." Evangaline said. " I think I'll name my shop, The Dragon's Cauldron." Haydrian said
