Oh boy. An expedition to the top of the mountain of Floor 4. Exactly how Oscar wanted to spend his day, that much was for certain. If it wasn't the biting cold, it was the fact that he knew that he had to fight himself a fairly weak boss for an item he needed to upgrade his axe. Why couldn't that just be something that Blacksmiths were able to do? Far be it from Oscar to question the methods of the madman that trapped 10,000 people in a video game, though. Only way to get it done was to get it done. So Oscar made his way to Floor 4 and went out into the frozen tundra, ready to get this over with and get back to the warmth as soon as humanly possible. At least he knew the exact route he needed to take. Not that it would have made anything any easier because he still needed to trudge through the snow. Silver linings, though.

Oscar wasted no time getting to the top of the mountain. Once he was there, he struck the massive skull in the center of the boneyard with a nearby femur. Upon doing so, the blizzard intensified and the Frost Beast manifested. Oscar looked on with a bland, apathetic expression. It wasn't as if this thing posed any sort of threat to him. He raised his axe aloft and then brought it down on the creature in the center of the swirling icy mists. The howl of pain that issued forth from the beast echoed from the mountaintops. It lashed out as Oscar with its claws, but the man found dodging it to be all too easy. Thus, it missed him by a mile. Oscar looked to its health bar. The creature was barely holding on to life. Indeed, a single basic attack would prove to be sufficient in laying the beast low. Which was a good thing. The sooner Oscar was able to get out of here, the better.

Basic Attack vs Frost Beast ID: 132454 BD4+4 Deal 18 DMG

Frost Beast 0/250 HP | 160 DMG

A single basic attack was enough to bring the Frost Beast down, just as Oscar had thought. The creature shattered like glass, scattered to the winds. It left behind one and only one piece of loot - The Essence of Steel. That was the whole reason why he was here, so Oscar was quite happy to be done. He pocketed the item and headed back towards town. It was still one hell of a hike to get there. At least it was all downhill from here. He looked forward to being back on a floor that was warmer than this. He might have been dressed for winter and equipped with the Survival skill, but that didn't mean that he was particularly comfortable being here. There was cold, and then there was this. While he wasn't quite as uncomfortable as he would have been on one of the hotter floors, he definitely didn't feel at all comfortable here.

After a rigorous hike, Oscar found himself back in town. He didn't make any pitstops and instead made a beeline straight for the teleportation platform. There were two goals in his mind. One, getting the hell up out of this infernal cold. And two, getting his grind on. He had a goal set of having 1,000,000 Col in his wallet. The only way to get there was by grinding and grinding hard. Plus, he had a mighty need for Tier 3 materials. Thus, his attention was brought to Floor 21. While he wasn't the biggest fan of the enemies that propagated on that floor, he couldn't think of a better place to find what he sought. Col, materials, and unidentified equipment were all great things to have in spades. And out of all of the different types of unidentified equipment, he was sorely lacking those that were designated Tier 3. He dialed in the location on the teleporter and off he popped, disappearing in a brilliant flash of light.

Oscar stepped out of the main settlement apprehensively. He knew that the moment his foot cleared the border of the safe zone, he would almost instant be assailed by the myriad spiders that called this floor their home. His foot touched down on the unprotected ground. From the walls skittered four spiders, thirty-two eyes blazing in the light and fixed on him. Oscar readied Chaos Eater. These looked a bit stronger than the last batch he fought. But it mattered little. Like eight-legged drones, they skittered down the walls and converged on Oscar from the cardinal directions. Oscar spun his axe over the back of his hand and took hold with his left. Quick as a flash, his axe flowed from the right, then to the left. Finally, he punctuated the onslaught by slamming his axe straight into the ground. The impact sent stone and dust billowing outward, blasting the spiders away from him. They recovered quickly and lunged at him, their forms obfuscated by the cloud of dust. Oscar weaved between them, nimbly dodging all of their attacks.

His first attack had managed to chunk the spiders down below half health. It softened them up, allowing for Oscar's follow up to put them down. Oscar lashed out quickly, a second Explode Catapult unleashed upon the arachnid enemies. He dealt just enough damage to completely drain their health bars. The moment their health reached zero, the spiders shattered like glass in unison. They left behind their loot. Loot that Oscar happily collected. Because they were a bit stronger than what he was used to, the Col gained from slaying them reflected that. It was a drop in the bucket compared to his goal. But enough drops would eventually fill a bucket. All it took was a little patience and resilience. Two things that Oscar had in spades. Now, he just needed to find a safe place to rest for his energy to restore.

The easiest thing to do would be to head back into the safe zone until his energy restored. But that simply felt a little cheap to Oscar. Outside of the Floor 21 welcome crew, Oscar found himself left alone as he sought out a place to rest. He eventually found a large rock to climb on top of. He sat down and from his perch, he looked out over the terrain. It was about as boring as boring got, really. Caves, no matter how vibrantly lit, just didn't interest him. How could he enjoy being below ground when there was just so much going on up above? Every second he was here made him feel like he was missing something more interesting on the surface. But, this was the most convenient place to grind mobs, so there was a tradeoff. Maybe next time he would try farming on Floor 24 or something. Had to be more interesting than this.

Waiting for his energy to refill was, at times, more boring than watching paint dry. While he was certain that it was implemented as a necessary balancing mechanic, Oscar just wished that there was a more reliable way to restore his energy that didn't have him sitting on his ass for an extended period of time. He wanted to get into the thick of it and stay in the thick of it. Constant breaks disrupted his flow. It ruined his tempo and thus made it more difficult for him to keep his head in the right place. Sure, he could definitely spend his time thinking about finding Tyson or what he was going to do to Pinball when he got his hands on him. But stewing in negativity wasn't going to help either of those things happen. You make stupid decisions when you make them from an emotional place. The grinding was a welcome distraction from the storm brewing in his head. If only he could stop being distracted from his distraction.

His energy filled back up and it was time to get going again. Right on cue, another swarm of spiders made their way towards him. It seemed as if one couldn't go anywhere without having to deal with several spiders every few seconds. So much the better. It saved Oscar from having to search for them. He attacked with an Explode Catapult, cleaving through the spiders like butter. Unfortunately, he was a bit stiff from sitting on the rock for so long and suddenly having to move. Due to this, two of the spiders managed to tag him, dealing over a quarter of his health in a single blow. Oscar shook it off. It wasn't as if they were poisonous. Their bites just really, really hurt. It was just damage and he was still in the green. He had to remain focused or else this fight would quickly go sideways. He really didn't want to have to be forced to use his Teleport Crystal against normal field enemies.

His second Explode Catapult was able to take out three of the four spiders. The survivor, however, was just barely able to dodge his swing. It retaliated by trying to bite him, but Oscar spun out of the way. Now that he had a brief window to do so, Oscar collected his loot and then turned his attention to the one remaining spider. He had more accuracy than he was used to having, so why did he still have to deal with stragglers? He supposed the system was set up so that no one would have 100 percent accuracy. Which just struck him as dumb. He was level Thirty-freaking-Seven. He should know how to hit enemies reliably by now. As irritating as it was, Oscar decided that it was best to let it go. No sense getting all up in arms about something he couldn't change. He'd just hoped that the guy who had trapped them here would program his game a little better than that.

Given the fact that Explode Catapult was only barely knocking the spiders below half health, Oscar couldn't very well switch up to Screw Dimension to finish this lone enemy off. Much to his chagrin, he was forced to expend the extra energy on a single-target Explode Catapult. And so he let it fly. Chaos Eater found its mark and brought the spider's health down to zero. At that moment, the arachnid foe shattered like glass. Oscar collected his loot and returned to his perch atop the rock. He groaned and buried his face in his hands. This whole grinding process was beginning to wear on him. At least, the constant need to stop what he was doing because he didn't have the energy to continue. He really needed to develop some sort of method of passing the time. Otherwise, he'd probably literally die of boredom.

Truly, this was how Oscar would die. Not at the hands of any monster or boss. Not at the fangs of these spiders. And not at the bottom of a cliff where careless footing would leave him with a sudden meeting with the ground. No, he would be bored to death. There was simply nothing interesting about being inside of a cave. All he had to busy himself with was watching the glowing mushrooms on the walls. It was probably the least interesting thing he had done in his life and he'd gone through American Public School. He just had to hold on for a bit longer and he would be able to get back into the fight. In truth, all he had to do was wait about a minute. But you know what they say about watched pots. The time felt infinitely longer as his gaze remained fixed upon his energy bar. Not doing that would probably make this a bit more bearable.

With the sudden revelation that perhaps he should do something other than sit around and watch his energy bar tick up, he decided to play with his familiar for a bit. He picked up a rock and chucked it off into the distance. Leeroy, ever willing to play, took his brother along for the ride as he dashed after it. After a moment of fumbling with the stone, he finally caught it in his mouth and dashed back to Oscar. He placed the slobber-coated stone in Oscar's outstretched hand and sat down on his haunches, tail wagging vigorously. "Hold on buddy," Oscar said. "I gotta kill some spiders and then we'll play some more." Leeroy let out an annoyed whine, but relented. The tail-wagging stopped as he watched over Oscar. His energy would replenish any moment now. He needed to make short work of these spiders before his familiar got too upset with him.

Back at full energy in the nick of time. Oscar scarcely had time to ready his weapon before the spiders came out of the wood, er, stonework once again. Oscar lashed out, striking ferociously with an Explode Catapult. He absolutely chunked their health bars. Unfortunately, one of the spiders took a chunk out of his hide as compensation. He was able to avoid the others, thankfully. He really didn't know how he felt about taking 400 damage from a bunch of spiders in a single round. Well he did, actually. The answer was "not great." So the fact that he was able to nimbly dance around most of their attacks made him feel much better. Much more confident that this fight would go sideways in the next ten seconds. Given the fact that the spiders had one foot in the grave, Oscar figured that he only needed one more attack before this was finished.

Oscar's second and final Explode Catapult was launched. He cleaved through the spiders as if they were made of paper. Their health bars plummeted as a result of his attack. When their health values reached zero, the spiders shattered one-by-one, leaving behind nothing but sparkly spots on the ground. Upon interacting with them, Oscar was able to collect his hard-won loot. It was beginning to get late. He wanted to have enough time to finish his errands and get home before dark. So, he wouldn't be able to stick around for much longer. He'd try and squeeze in one more round before heading back down to the Town of Beginnings. The people down there wouldn't be able to feed themselves. Well, they would. But the experience would be just... awful. Oscar couldn't very well be responsible for that travesty.

Since the spiders were dispatched, Oscar turned his attention back towards his faithful companion. Leeroy and Jenkins had been waiting patiently for Oscar to be done. Now that he was, he turned around, picked up the stone he had been using for fetch and gave it a hefty toss off into the distance. Leeroy issued a happy, playful bark and ran off after it. Jenkins seemed to be slowly warming up to the idea of the game as well. The serious head of the Cerberus looked much less apathetic and seemed to be more willing to involve himself. Leeroy snatched up the rock and sprinted back to Oscar, placing the item at Oscar's feet. He picked the stone up and tossed it yet again. The familiar sprinted off once more, this time a bit confused as to where the stone went. Oscar waited patiently while the hound sniffed around, desperately trying to find its toy.

As Leeroy and Jenkins searched for the rock Oscar had thrown for them, his eyes flicked up to his health and energy bars. He was happy to see that things were going along smoothly. This was much more preferable than sitting around doing nothing for a couple minutes while his resources replenished. A happy bark told Oscar that his hounds had found what they were looking for. He looked back over to see that they were on their way back, this time with Jenkins carrying the round stone. He was happy to see that Jenkins had come around and was getting some playtime in as well. Unfortunately, he'd need to put it off for a bit longer. His energy was about to be full again and he had spiders that needed slaying. Jenkins placed the stone down at Oscar's feet and pawed at it. Oscar gave him a mournful look and then turned his attention to the spiders that were advancing upon him. "Sorry buddy. Give me a minute."

The spiders again converged on Oscar from each of the cardinal directions. He readied his axe and activated his Explode Catapult Sword Art. His axe cleaved through the arachnids like a hot knife through butter. The attack dealt heavy damage to the spiders, one even having the misfortune of having a Bleed proc applied to it for a little extra damage. One by one, the spiders lunged at him. He danced in between their attacks skillfully, but wasn't able to prevent one of the spiders from landing a critical hit on him. He winced as the spider's fangs dug into his thigh. He quickly threw the creature off of him and prepared himself for the next, and hopefully final, round. He wasn't concerned about the damage they'd dealt at this point. Even if they were to all crit him next round, he would still be in it for one more attack.

Oscar, aiming to end this battle in one fell swoop, launched a second Explode Catapult. The attack found its mark, cleaving through the ranks of the spiders and dispatching them instantly. Oscar collected his loot and then the stone he was using to play with Leeroy and Jenkins. He gave it a stiff throw towards the settlement, watching with glee as his hound bolted off after it. With a wide smile, he followed along after them at a leisurely pace. The entire walk back to the settlement, Oscar played fetch with his Familiar. Both of them seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. Once they entered the town, however, playtime had to stop. They weren't happy about it, but they'd gotten their exercise in. They knew their master had business to attend to and would definitely play with them later. Either that or give them a big ol' steak for dinner.

Oscar was a little tired thanks to his outing, but he had obligations he needed to attend to. After taking some time on Floor 1 to feed his regulars, he stopped by the orphanage to prepare dinner for them. A rare treat. Their usual cook wasn't anywhere near Oscar's skill level. At least they were leaving their kitchen clean in case he stopped by now. Progress. Once that was done, it was time to head home. Leeroy and Jenkins both seemed ready to get home, eat, and sleep. Their mood mimicked that of their master. Oscar was of no mind to delay that for even a moment. Just as he had planned, Oscar had finished his to-do list with daylight left to spare. He hated walking home in the dark. While it wasn't unsafe, the footing could be treacherous and he didn't enjoy faceplanting into the dirt several times on the way back home. Thankfully, with the sun still casting its light over the floor, he didn't have to worry about that.
