No time to think about all that. The Spiders were back. I feel it's important, dear reader, that I point out that these spiders currently giving Oscar the business and forcing him to re-evaluate his build choices were not giant spiders. No, they were normal sized spiders. They just bounced around all over the place, smacking Oscar with disproportionate strength. Imagine for a moment a man with a huge-ass battleaxe smacking the crap out of a daddy longlegs. That is the exact situation Oscar was in. For some odd reason, though, the spiders were super easy to hit. Some kind of departure between reality and game mechanics was at foot here. Either way, Oscar smacked all of them with an Explode Catapult. Some of them even caught on fire. While he did that, he dodged, ducked, dipped, dived, and dodged the spiders' incoming attacks. Honestly, it made him feel a little invincible.

Oscar attacked again, catching more spiders on fire and sending the little buggers flying in all directions. Two of them, however, quickly rallied. They were made of sterner stuff than their companions as they managed to land hits on Oscar despite the fact that Tesseleth's Fury had set them ablaze. His health bar tanked after even two of them landed blows. If he weren't in the middle of combat, he might have considered reigniting the debate between Evasion and Mitigation. But, alas, he was currently in the midst of combat. So he didn't exactly have the mental ability to think about that while he swatted at anatomically-correct spiders. Maybe later, though. But definitely not now. Because, as I've said, he was busy using his axe as a massive flyswatter to keep the little buggers away from his gibbly bits. He liked his gibbly bits.

A final Explode Catapult decided the bout. He'd even managed to score a Fallen proc with bad timing when it was all said and done. Either way, he no longer had to concern himself over the spiders attacking his gibbly bits. Instead, he concerned himself over the loot the spiders dropped. One thing was for certain, the spiders certainly had a lot of dosh on them for how tiny they were. Did they have secret pockets that were somehow bigger on the inside? That would be terrifying. No, the game was just assigning values and loot based on mobs killed with no thought to the actually size. But could you imagine though? What would even be inside of a spider's pocket? Emergency food? Could a people fit inside there? How many people did the spiders have bound up in their theoretical pockets? Inquiring minds just had to know.

As he contemplated the theoretical pockets of spiders, Oscar wandered about the floor. Eventually, he came upon a shiny mushroom. Shiny meant that he could gather it and mushrooms were delicious. One plus one equals two and Oscar plucked the mushy fungus from the wall of the cave and plopped it into his pocket. In so doing, he became keenly aware of the sheer amount of things he had in his own pockets. Evidence of spiders also having pockets of a similar scale. After all, Oscar had a pair of gloves, several full-sized battleaxes, a curved sword, and all of his old armor stuffed inside of his pockets. And that was to say nothing of all of the unidentified weapons he possessed. He had a full-sized armory contained within his pants and he only just now realized. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to consider that the spiders also had pockets for food.

But alas, Oscar would never be able to confirm his theory of spider pockets. Why? Because Oscar had no intention of getting himself into a position in which he would be placed into a theoretical spider pocket. Thus, he would never be able to confirm with firsthand knowledge whether or not the spiders had pockets to place things into. Somehow he doubted that he would ever know. For to be placed into the pocket of a spider, Oscar would have to be disabled for long enough to stuff his body inside. That would only happen if he died. And given that things seemed to shatter when their health value reached zero, there would be nothing left of Oscar to pocket. Perhaps he could follow the spiders around and see if anything disappeared in proximity with them. The spiders were already freakishly strong. Warping reality just seemed like the next logical jump from that.

His energy was full again. It was time to boogy. As if on cue, spiders lunged at him from all directions. But Oscar had the world's best flyswatter - Tesseleth's Fury. He spun around on his heels, smacking the spiders this way and that. He even managed to get a Fallen Proc on a couple of them. One of them even caught on fire to boot! The damage on that attack was absolutely crazy! His counter maneuver had managed to send all the spiders flying off in every which direction. This kept them far away from his gibbly bits. It also reduced his own risk of being suddenly pocketed by one of the spiders, something that he had worked himself into a lather over for some stupid reason. It was absolutely ludicrous. Spiders with pockets. Truly, there were more tangible things to be afraid of. Like spiders with spiders in their spider pockets.

That thought was absolutely terrifying. Oscar struck with even more ferocity than before, hoping to continue keeping the spiders at bay. Unfortunately, one of the spiders ignited. I saw unfortunately because being set aflame seemed to make the creature less-than-enthused about allowing Oscar to continue exist. In other words, it was angry. It vented this anger by smacking the absolute fire out of Oscar. Though he was dangerously close to being in the yellow, Oscar knew that if he panicked, the spiders would have the upper hand. They were all unbelievably low. All he needed to do was land one final Explode Catapult and it would be time to collect his loot and lick his wounds. Or, it could go another way and Oscar could get eviscerated by the spiders. Thus he would die alone and embarrassed on one of the most depressing floors he had ever had the displeasure of existing on.

Oscar struck out in all directions once more. All of his attacks landed true and exterminated the spiders with extreme prejudice. Thankful that no further chunks were being torn out of his health bar for the time being, Oscar bent down and collected his loot. His Col and Material stores were quickly being replenished. It was no Nature's Treasure outing, but it would do until he could actually facilitate one of those. His thoughts flicked back to things to spend SP on. Perhaps he would pick fishing back up? It was certainly relaxing and, frankly, any bosses he fished up would quickly be turned into sashimi. But, then again, was it worth the risk? He would only fish in between rounds of combat, which was when he would be at his weakest. Would he really be able to afford close combat with a boss fish without the necessary resources to do it in?

Drinking 3 Healing Potions of Healing Healingness +360 HP

Oscar was tired of seeing his health so low. He remembered that he had some potions that Zandra had made for him a while back. As he walked Oscar guzzled them down, each providing a health bump to his health bar. Now back at full health, he found himself less concerned with the enemies on this floor and more concerned with the science behind things having such massive pockets. Were they all wizards? Time Lords? Was he a TARDIS? Probably not. If he were, Oscar probably would have gone back in time and prevented this whole disaster from ever happening. But then he would have never met Cordelia. Would he be willing to knowingly let so many people die just so he could meet Cordelia if he had the opportunity to go back in time and stop it? That was a very bad mental exercise. He would like to say "no he would not do that."

But then when he thought about it, his chest ached. He knew the choice he would make, but he certainly wouldn't like it. Of course he would save the people who would become trapped within the confines of the game. But it would cost him any hope of ever meeting Cordelia. He'd never meet any of his friends, all things considered. This extended well beyond Cordelia. He would never have met Bahr or Macradon or any of the rest of the people who had enriched his life since he found himself trapped here. Would that be worth the lives of two thousand people? And not just the connections he made. What about everyone else who had made the best of their situation, forming bonds and friendships with their fellow prisoners? What were their experiences worth against the lives of thousands? How did it all stack up?

Oscar was grateful for the spiders this time. They had shown up just in the nick of time, preventing Oscar from falling too far down the existential rabbit hole. As if on autopilot, Oscar struck out at the arachnid adversaries. Not a single one escaped his attack, one even falling victim to a Fallen proc. He dodged, ducked, dipped, dived, and dodged in between the spiders, making sure to keep well away from their flailing limbs. He managed to escape from their onslaught untouched. Round two would be coming up next. He would be ready for it. With any luck, he would be able to take out the weakest one, thereby reducing the amount of enemies he had to keep his eyes on by one. It would certainly make combat easier and perhaps he would scrape by this encounter without taking as much damage as the last ones. He was so tired of getting his ass kicked.

Just as he had hoped, his next attack dispatched the weakest spider. As it turned out, the creatures couldn't withstand more than one Fallen proc in quick succession. Now that he had one less spider to focus on, dodging the incoming attack was much easier. He waited for them to finish their assault before collecting his loot from the first spider. The next round would likely decide the fight. He would be free to continue on his quest for existential enlightenment without being assailed for the time being. All that stood in between him and the difficult questions was three tiny spiders. And whatever they had in their pockets. In a toss up between spider pockets and whether the lives of 2,000 people were worth more than the lives of the remaining 8,000, Oscar would honestly prefer to ponder the former any day of the week.

A final Explode Catapult was launched. A Fallen Proc and a Crit burn helped end this round of fighting. Oscar collected his loot and resolved himself to get to the bottom of the question burning a hole in his heart: Do spiders in Sword Art Online have pockets? It would be answered scientifically. Through Hypothesis, Experimentation, and Observation. Current Hypothesis? Spiders have pockets? Current experiment? Well there was a squirrel nearby. Oscar quickly grabbed the rodent in one hand and began to search around for a spider. This tasty morsel would likely be too much to pass up for any spider. It would definitely be worth pocketing if one had pockets to store snacks in. All he needed to do was find a spider that didn't seem to be too hungry. Then it would all fall into place. Hopefully. Or the spider would just eat the thing. But one must suffer for science.

Speaking of suffering for science. The squirrel bit Oscar and ran away. Now he had no bait for the spiders to pocket. Without spider bait, he would not be able to confirm or deny the existence of their pockets? What if Kayaba trapped a bunch of spiders in here and they were playing their own weird version of Sword Art Online, but from the perspective of the spider. What if Sword Art Online was less a game and more a state of mind? What had Oscar been smoking to be asking questions like this? Near as he could tell, getting stoned wasn't exactly possible within the game. But perhaps the spores from the mushrooms were affecting him more than they should. Were they magic mushrooms? Surely Kayaba wouldn't expose people to psychedelics on such a dangerous floor. That bordered on irresponsible. Almost as irresponsible as trapping people inside of a death game.

Okay, so maybe Oscar was high. Or maybe he was just super introspective. One way or another, Oscar knew he needed to bounce. If the spores were the cause, getting away from them was the obvious solution. Only problem was that Oscar had been wandering for so long that he couldn't exactly place the way back to town. He knew it was... thataway, but which thataway was the question. Up thataway? Down thataway? What about left and right? Okay, something was definitely wrong. He realized now why he didn't go on adventures like this very much anymore. He often thought really stupid things. Being caught up in his own head for so long was definitely detrimental to his own mental health. Honestly. Spider pockets? The ravings of a madman. Pocket spiders were clearly the hot-button issue. Wait, no. More madman ravings.

Now that Oscar was resigned to leave, the Spiders came in force. They lunged from all directions, but Oscar was ready. One doesn't occupy all of the cognitive ability with spiders without being ready for when they inevitably appear. He swung his weapon with all of his strength. Some got hit with that Fallen. Some still got set on fire. One even got hit with the Fallen and set on fire. But despite this, Oscar still managed to get smack around by a disproportionately powerful arachnid. He'd only just gotten his health bar back to 100 percent. And then this asshole comes along and smacks the fire out of him. It was enough to make a man sick. Seriously. He wanted to throw up. The oppressive atmosphere of the cave was beginning to become far too much to deal with. He needed to finish this fight quickly before the walls started to close in.

And so, Oscar struck again. He lashed out in all directions, cleaving first to the left, then to the right. The spiders were all smashed by Tesseleth's Fury. All of them were on fire, some were closer to death than the others. But all of them were 100% PISSED. Two of the spiders managed to land hits on Oscar, bring him back down into the yellow. Now he was in danger. It wouldn't take too much more than that to end Oscar's entire career right here and now. If he wasn't able to kill at least two of them, he still ran the risk of dying in this encounter. He would need to dig deep and focus. It was the only way he was going to win this. That and a ton of luck. But, thankfully, the spiders were so low that even if he didn't proc Fallen or Burn, they would die if he managed to connect. He just needed to make sure that he connected.

Thank the heavens! Oscar was able to dispatch the exact amount of spiders he needed to in order to comfortably remain in the land of the living. With one spider remaining, it was child's play to dodge its attack. With that done, Oscar collect his loot. Now, all that stood between Oscar and home was a single tiny spider. It was really a bad place to be, all things considered. Home was where the food was, after all. Woe be to the idiot that was fool enough to stand between Oscar and lunch. The very thought enraged the blonde executioner. How dare this creature keep him from his luxurious hot dogs? Oscar would take recompense from the arachnid's hide. Or, rather, exoskeleton. Chitin? Shell. It didn't matter. He was gonna smack the fire out of this dumbass and go home. He'd spent way too long by himself. He social interaction.

And so Oscar smacked that foolish spider with a Screw Dimension. Its health had been so low that the attack overkilled the bastard. He collect his loot and picked a direction. The best way to get not lost was to follow your gut and pick a direction to walk in. True to form, Oscar began to notice familiar landmarks. No longer were thoughts of spider pockets or the weight of life and death on his mind. He just wanted to go home. He wanted to go home, kiss his girlfriend, and have a nice relaxing dinner. Sometimes a little isolation could be a good thing. But Oscar really didn't like being by himself anymore. That was the thing about forming bonds with people. When they're not around, you start to miss them. Oscar learned and important lesson today. If given a choice he was much prefer a day with his friends than even an hour to himself.

Eventually, Oscar managed to find his way back to town. From there, it was only a quick teleport back down to Floor Seven. And from there, a small hike through the mountains to reach his home. Never before had the threshold to his house been so inviting. Oscar was tired, injured, and hungry. He wanted to get some food and some rest. He'd had fun insofar as he'd crossed yet another quest off of his list. But he felt the time would have been better spent basically any other way he could have spent it. He wasn't a loner anymore. He had people depending on him. He had people who he depended on. This mutual neediness formed solid relationships that he wouldn't trade the world for. He figured this would be the last quest he would take on by himself. It wasn't that he didn't have the ability. He just wanted to build experiences with the people he cared about.
