Today was a day of no combat. Just quiet relaxation next to the lake. Oscar had been on the Col grind for far too long. He'd killed enough spiders to fill an entire theoretical hammerspace several times over. Now, he just wanted to sit down, take a load off and just think. He'd brought a chair with him this time. A comfy lounger that had some support for his feet. This way, he could lie back and let the tension melt away. It wasn't really like Oscar to really let himself relax. He had so much to do in a given day that even an hour to himself was a rarity. One has to make sure to take time for themselves, however. And no, going on an arachnid killing spree didn't count. While cathartic, it definitely didn't help much in the grand scheme. Well-intentioned as he was, Oscar somehow doubted that he would have the attention span to stick with fishing all day though. But he would try.

Fishing had often been a time for self-reflection for Oscar. It was a pastime that was engaging enough to keep him interested, yet not so engaging that he had to spend his entire focus on it. He produced a cooler from his inventory and placed it beside his chair. He fished around inside it, feeling the biting chill of the ice on his hand. His fingers wrapped around the neck of a bottle and he yanked it loose from the ice. With a deft flick of his thumb, he popped the cap off of the glass bottle and took a long sip of the ice-cold, dark-colored beverage. The carbonation therein left a tingling sensation in his mouth and throat. Oscar smacked his lips together and placed the bottle down on the ground next to him. It tasted like a pretty-good Dr. Pepper knock off. He had missed his mark a bit, but not by much. Oscar reeled in his line to check it and, upon finding it empty, cast it back into the water.

Sitting alone with a cold drink at his side and a fishing rod in his hands, it was difficult for Oscar not to pine for the old days. The days before he became trapped in SAO. He had a job he loved, a family that had his back no matter what. Life wasn't without its struggles, but then again, who didn't struggle? It was only when he took stock of everything he had gained since the moments he first said the words Link Start, that he ultimately realized that such nostalgia was an insult to the things he had built in this world. It was a strange feeling to be pulled so violently between one world and the next. On the one hand, he missed home. But on the other, being trapped here had given birth to so many blessings. There was Cordelia, obviously. The entire journey with her was one of the most thrilling and joyful experiences of his entire life.

It called into question a whole f*ck ton of philosophical and existential things, however. Questions that Oscar was ill-equipped to answer. He was a social worker from Boston, not Nietzsche. The question as to why he felt so attached to something that by all normal metrics couldn't be considered real was one that needed to be answered by better minds than his. He knew how he felt about it all. It certainly all felt real. If you looked closely, you could see the cracks form. Some things were just a part of his reality that couldn't possibly be a thing in the real world. He wondered just how long it would take him to acclimate to the fact that he couldn't summon items with a snap of his fingers once he finally made it back to the real world. Oscar took another sip of his drink as he reeled in his catch. Perhaps fishing on his own wasn't such a good idea.

"Damn. I really gotta stop doing stuff like this."

Isolation truly was the mortal enemy of anyone who suffered from depression. As he pondered the metaphysical - the existential fallout - of the ordeal in its entirety, there was a pang of sorrow deep in his breast. It blossomed out, the void filling his chest. With everything he had accomplished - bonds he'd formed, goals met and exceeded - it did little to fill the hole in his heart. He felt guilty for that. So many people had poured their love into him and, in spite of it all, it couldn't fill the void. He filled his days trying to do what he could for the people around him. It wasn't enough. There weren't enough altruistic acts that would ultimately make Oscar forget how numb he was to everything. If he'd ceased to exist at this very moment would anyone even miss him when he was gone?

Dude. Seriously. Get out of your own head. It isn't fun up here.

Oscar cracked a smile despite the macabre thoughts passing through his head. It was an eternal struggle between the logical and the emotional. Left and right brains locked in a mortal duel in which the prize would be Oscar's life. It was at moments like this that he truly appreciated such duality. This was supposed to be a fun Easter Egg Hunt and yet Oscar was allowing his own inadequacies to bleed into the occasion. There was only one thing he could do alone that would prevent him from languishing in the despair that lurked just behind the corner. It wasn't fishing. Though this had been intended to be a fishing trip, the voice in his head telling him to get out of his own head was correct. He couldn't sit here and ponder life's mysteries when they invariably led him back to his own self-hatred.

And thus, Oscar decided to abandon the initial intent of the outing and made himself ready for combat. He buffed himself up through food and potions. Odd as it was, Oscar was really getting tired of hot dogs. He made a mental note to integrate different foods into his menu. The sameness of the hot dogs he prided himself on weren't exactly conducive to not falling into a rut. While Oscar could appreciate the merits of routine, he needed to shake it up once in a while to keep himself from going insane. He finished drinking down his soda and swapped out his gloves for his coat. Combat - though notoriously tedious - seemed to be the only thing that got his heart racing enough and distracted him from his own thoughts. He had to find a better way to deal with his emotional turmoil, but that took time. Time was something he lacked at this very moment. He couldn't undo decades of depression with a single mental trick.

Oscar realized that with his energy value, he could withstand sustained combat with the trash mobs for a while longer than before. He had exactly the required energy necessary for five uses of Explode Catapult. Considering that most enemies he fought died in two hits from the absurdly-powerful Sword Art, this would allow him to engage two different sets of four before his energy was depleted. And thus, he sought out the spiders to put that to the test. They weren't hard to find given the fact that the spiders were on the prowl almost everywhere on this floor. In fact, he was surprised that they had not attacked him while he was fishing. He noticed off in the distance that there was a group of them and that he had set up just outside their aggro range. He rushed in and attacked, red-barring half of them in a single stroke.

Without skipping a beat, Oscar activated Explode Catapult again in short order. He cleaved through the giant spiders, Tesseleth's Fury immolating his arachnid foes. They writhed, limbs lashing out in all directions. Eventually, they succumbed to the pain and curled up on their backs, their legs folding inward. Then, one by one, each of the spiders shattered like glass. The fragments of the spiders' models were carried off on the wind. In their wake, the spiders left only glistening spots upon the ground where they had died. Oscar interacted with them one at a time, claiming his deserved reward. His Col total ticked up as he added the eggs and materials to his pack. Everything else could be trashed. Oscar really found no pleasure in taking the time to gather the Unidentified Equipment only for them to, more likely than not, turn into something absolutely rubbish. It always wound up being disappointing.

Oscar moved to capitalize on his momentum, searching out another group of spiders to exterminate. He was careful not to wander too far from his chair. He still intended to fish for the small amount of bonus loot that could be earned that way. He didn't want to get trapped too far away from the lake with no energy and a group of spiders barring his path. He found another congregation of arachnids in short order. He activated Explode Catapult, laying waste to their ranks in three decisive attacks. The heat from Tesseleth's Fury caused half their number to come ablaze, dealing a small amount of additional damage. One spider, however, was able to not only evade his attack, but deliver a retaliatory blow as well. Oscar winced as the spider sank its fangs into him. He shook the creature off of his arm and made ready for the second round. If only he had a skill that could heal the massive amount of damage he had just taken.

Oh wait. He did. He smirked when he saw most of the damage that the spider had dealt to him be healed in an instant. In fact, the spider had only managed to deal a grand total of 19 damage to him after Mitigation and regeneration effects were taken into consideration. Had Vampiric activated, he would be sitting back at full health. But alas, he couldn't rub even more salt in the wound. Oscar spun Tesseleth's Fury around over his head, much akin to a helicopter. Then, he brought the weapon down to cleave through their ranks once more. He managed to knock the undamaged spider down to the yellow, but another spider dodged his attack entirely. It was of little consequence. He still had enough energy to end this fight. He collected the loot he did manage to earn and prepared himself to finish the fight on his next attack.

That was exactly what he did. A final Explode Catapult dispatched the remaining spiders. He even had a small buffer remaining. With that, he could have used a Screw Dimension to mop up if one of the spiders had managed to survive. Oscar collected his loot, musing to himself about how great it was to have a solid buffer when it came to his energy. For most of Tier 2, Oscar had been down to the wire when it came to his energy. What he hadn't counted on when he traded his Katana for a Battle Axe was the huge uptick in energy consumption. But as he leveled, that issue became less and less of a problem. Oscar slung Tesseleth's Fury over his back. He had been correct. The best way to handle being on his own was to do something distracting enough to keep him out of his own head. He picked up a bottle of soda out of the cooler and cracked the lid.

He knew that the quickening of his pulse and the hammering of his heart in his chest were mere simulations. But the rush of endorphins from physical exertion was also perfectly-simulated. He felt the effects of the adrenaline that should have been coursing through his veins, even though he had no blood to speak of in this world. His vision was laser focused, his muscles - or the game's approximation of his muscles - were tense. He felt the hormones wash over him, an oddly relaxing sensation. He took a long gulp of the soda. This time a Pepsi. Like the first one, this one was just slightly off. That was the problem with recreating a brand soda from memory. He cast out his line, considering what the proper adjustments to make were when he got back to his shop. There was an almost-immediate tug on his line. Oscar hauled in a whopping eight eggs.

Oscar cast his line out again, not bothering to sit down in his chair. As he waited to feel a tug on it, he finished his knock-off Pepsi and tossed the bottle aside. It shattered on a rock, instantly reduced to polygonal fractals. That was another good thing about this place. You could use the world as your trash can and it didn't affect anything. Littering was a thing of the past as the system would quickly deal with any discarded item by destroying it. If only such a thing were feasible in the real world. Oscar would have pondered that further, but he felt another tug on his line. This one was heavier than the last. He struggled to reel it in, but when he did, a treasure chest appeared from the depths. It sailed through the air. Oscar busied himself catching the eggs that accompanied it. The chest came to rest right in front of him. He didn't find himself super enthused about what it might contain, but hey. Col and Mats.

Oscar stooped down and began fiddling with the lock. The lock was rusted and worn, as it would have been after being submerged for an extended period of time in the real world. Eventually, after his attempts to pick the lock failed, he stood back up. With a single mighty kick, he broke the lock. The internal mechanisms would have been weakened by the extended submersion, which allowed such a feat to be possible. He took off the remaining bits of the lock and then flung the chest open. Inside was a collection of items. He immediately trashed the Unidentified items, instead electing to take only the Col and Materials. You know, the useful stuff. Then, he nudged the empty chest back into the lake. It disappeared into the depths with a splash. He knew that somewhere down there, the chest would be destroyed, which made him feel a bit better about polluting the waters.

The chest had been a worthwhile distraction, but Oscar was back to full energy. This meant that it was time to once again play exterminator. The first group of spiders that he had fought previously had respawned. He realized that by the time he killed them, the second group would manifest once more. Oscar dashed into their midst, unleashing his Explode Catapult Sword Art. A clean hit on all fronts. Tesseleth's Fury ignited one of the spiders for a small amount of additional damage. Then, it was his turn to be on the defensive. An issue about being in the center of several enemies is that their attacks would come from all sides. The spiders leaped and lashed out at Oscar. With some focus, however, Oscar found himself easily dancing in between their blows. Eventually, they came to a stop, providing Oscar with a brief window. He just needed to get himself into a position to take advantage of it.

It was a vulnerability. Fleeting, but it was there. Oscar's back foot landed on the ground, skidding a few inches over the dirt as he applied his weight to it. He pushed off that leg, pivoting to face the entire group of spiders. Using both hands, he guided his weapon into the first strike of his Explode Catapult. He sliced from right to left, then left to right. The force of the blow positioned the spiders to be clustered up around a decent-sized stone. The final downward slice of his attack came down upon this stone. The rock shattered, shrapnel exploding out in all directions. The spiders took the full force of the burst, razor sharp shards cutting through their models. They immediately shattered, leaving behind glistening, interactive spots upon the ground where they had been felled. Oscar interacted with those spots, taking his Col and Materials and, again, leaving the rest to be eaten by the System.

Now, it was on to the next group. As he had predicted, the second set had respawned shortly after he had defeated the first. He dashed in, slicing to and fro with Tesseleth's Fury. He dealt massive damage to the spiders, even lighting one ablaze. What he wasn't prepared for was how quickly the spiders would close in on him. He tried to dodge, but only managed to evade one of them. He was dealt a total of 225 damage when three of the spiders sank their fangs into different parts of his body in unison. Oscar shook them off, looking up at his health bar. He'd never been hit by more than two enemies at the same time. Though their damage wasn't very powerful, when they ganged up on him they were able to deal as much damage as a quest boss. He needed to end this quickly lest lightning did, in fact, strike twice today.

He launched another Explode Catapult, cleaving through their ranks. He was grateful that his attack dealt with all of them at once. His eyes flicked up to his energy bar. He had 25 remaining. A nice buffer, but he shuddered to think what would happen had things truly come down to the wire. In his foolishness, he had sacrificed his only method of regaining energy in order to fish again. And since being alone with his thoughts was such a bad idea, he began to wonder whether or not he should keep the skill. Would the SP not be better spent elsewhere? That also begged the question of what Oscar wanted his next skill to be. Energist wasn't a bad idea considering just how much energy he burned through. But then again, he'd devoted his entire build to slaying things. Perhaps a more utility-based skill was in order. Either way, he was a long ways off from being able to make that call. He collected his loot while making a mental note to consider his next skill more carefully.

It was about time to wrap up and go home. He didn't want to be bogged down with an extended grind session. He wanted to see Cordelia at some point today - maybe even man the shop he'd been shirking for days now. But before he did, he returned to the lake and cast his line out once more. He rested his rod up against a stone and began packing up his things. The chair and his cooler were returned to his inventory. He turned back to his fishing rod to find that it had fallen over. He must have gotten a bite in the couple seconds it took to pack up. Whatever had been on his line was long gone now. He picked up his rod and returned it to his inventory. With a contented sigh, he headed back home. He would need to take more tangible steps to address his poor mental state, but for now, he was stabilized. That was more than he really could have hoped for.
