[E3|F10-SP] Wonder Why

Recommended Posts

Ah, she was stalling. And in the middle of her getting lost in her own mind, she'd left one of her victims lonely for play. It wasn't because she'd been too caught up with her aggravations with herself that she chose not to pay attention to the fight, letting her movements go sloppy and her mind and gaze foggy again. No, absolutely not.

...

The results spoke more for her than the player did for herself, though. But wasn't this, as such, life? To manipulate the world view with which one saw through their own eyes, alter it to fit their own agenda? Or was maybe NIGHT selfish, keeping and hoarding her own emotions to herself? Was there even a proper dictation on who should get to hear her own private ideas, who was allowed in her own mind, to see through the galaxy as she did through her own eyes?

After all, it wasn't exactly possible. Not for a 100% match. But a glint into that private sanctuary...

... Well, who would even want to? ... More importantly, why?

Here was some dumb kid, who'd existed for 20 years, in the middle of a timeline that stretched too far onwards and too far back. Put into an extraordinary situation, such as getting stuck in a virtual landscape, where everything fantastical had been brought to life. Dreams discovered, lives wasted, everywhere else in reality and all around her digitally. Surely it must be an astronomical oversight to pay attention to her, specifically her, out of all the other things that would've occurred over this universe, this oblique speck in time and space.

There had to be an old man, or some younger kid, some other specimen that was just like her to pay better heed to, was what NIGHT was trying to get at. Not golly gosh ol' her and her eensy weensy gaga teenage problems of trying to soothe a bleeding heart, getting over a crush she should've long moved on from, should've put to rest just like all the other enemies she's faced in this godforsaken castle where obstacles were crafted exactly to perfection just to put her to ruins--

-- Ah.

She finally hit the revenant.

NIGHT found herself sitting in a corner of the clearing. There were places beyond where she was, certainly. She hadn't even met the Void itself yet, merely started her approach towards the landmark from the parting locale. But, after that fight...

She just felt like she had to re-evaluate her life for a bit. Figure out how... how exactly she got where she was. Somewhere along the lines of 'I bought a cool new game!' to 'I'm running away from someone who looks like the girl I loved a handful of years ago because they're really just a manifestation of the system that trapped me in here and is threatening to kill us all every day, and this is just part of its psychological torture scheme' there had to be this gap that had to be mended. Right? How else was she to cope, otherwise?

So NIGHT put a sharp stone to work, picking apart the dirt in a slow, steady, exhausted motion. And then she found a material cache.

Why not.

There was this grave, solid fact. That, at the time, when DAY her Gemini had decided to offer her a gift of a swapped appearance, following her mentioning of identity theft, NIGHT hadn't... exactly said a lot.

Or, if she had (and she really didn't want to rethink the whole memory to preserve her own sanity), she didn't... find herself objecting to DAY her duple's... 'present' strongly enough. That was the gap she was looking for, really. The whole build up to the mess she found herself in.

And NIGHT knew why she hadn't. Especially after her little meditation journey had unearthed some feelings she'd stored away, buried underneath layers of her character, stashed away for no one to unveil and recover. Meeting new people, falling for others, things like those were part of life. She could get used to them, sure. Placing her trust in strangers was something she was learning to adapt to, too.

But this? Whatever DAY her double was pulling?

It felt way, way darker than that, didn't it?

And -- and the worst part about it. The absolutely, most terrifying part about that darkness.

-- three quick swings against one foe, dracbane bleeding it dry --

How NIGHT allowed her other to run about the castle, with a face that shone as brilliantly as the sun and stars combined. How she'd dropped the name (DAY, what a parallel!) onto her reflection at the lack of words for another title to call them by. Even back to the end of their journey to the waterfall, when they negotiated putting their hair up, just so both of them could agree on toeing the line between what should've been acceptable, and what wasn't?

All of it just felt like her fault.

No, scratch that. All of it was her fault, hands down. She could've done something about each and every one of those pointers, stopped them far in advance of what they would've inevitably evolved into, and then she didn't. NIGHT really let that happen, didn't she?

Ren let that happen.

Ren -- NIGHT? growled, her voice visceral, guttural. She hated blaming herself for stuff. And fair enough, she did deserve most of the hate she gave herself, but in the moment she needed to escape it.

She already had enough on her plate that day, after all. It was with Nyanko's squealing behind her that had caught her (rather indifferent and hazy) attention while she'd lingered on her thoughts, the undead coming back up from the ashes to disturb her mood again.

-- with great honor she pushed dracbane down into another creature's neck, a folly to have stood against her --

An aggravated chuck against the floor, the woman tossing the sharp pebble in her hands aside. She'd lunged back into the fray, pulling her blade to her side and began managing her crowd. Bit by bit, slice by slice their numbers would be brought down to size, a routine long memorized by her body, leaving her mind to wander, wander...

Her venomous armor had much more utility packed into it than she'd ever expected out of the chest piece when she'd first received it, a lucky drop from a burning boss. It'd seen its days, and was starting to get worn, but that made for great stories, reliability, and given the opportunity for repairs, the polish would go a long way into making it clean and new again.

Each swipe made against her only ultimately served to work against her opponents. Two attacks had come and gone, NIGHT making sure to rid her field of the first beast that had attempted to shove her down. In time, she cut down their allies, too; what was left of the vanguard were the handful of newer enemies that she'd stalled on ridding off earlier. NIGHT knew to pick up the pace now, if not for the time she would remain here in this clearing, then for the time regained from dallying if she'd chose to move on later.

NIGHT had gone through multiple swords during her journey. Doombringer was her favourite, being a shoutout and a proper recreation of a stand-out blade from an old, nostalgic game. Then there was...

Ugh.

She hated Tobi-Kadachi. But it was useful enough at the time. And her faussar hadn't exactly seen the love it deserved, either, giving way to its sibling to shine. Even after she felt the stabs of her cloud-coloured blade jamming into her in her waking nightmares just because someone, someone wanted her to die, she'd managed to change its appearance, and that waned off the nightmares for a while, if not forever.

Would those remain? After I get out of this castle -- uh, if I ever get out of this castle.

And now she had been handed Dracbane. For what the blade was worth, it felt like dancing with an ever eager hellhound, how it spilled, coated her vision and coloured the floor with red.

It was... fun. Invigorating. Dracbane really emanated a strange, soul-binding charisma.

And as the aforementioned sword shattered its last foe, NIGHT waved it around, brushing aside the light particles from sight for the moment. Busy day, she figured, motioning Nyanko back into her bag as she eyed the clearing's second exit. Instead, her familiar beckoned her forth, like a maneki-neko doll, except less golden and more unspeakably cute void.

Okay, I'll play. What's up?

Material cache. Once again. Her little kitten was getting better and better at seeking them out, for what purpose (other than to aid her) she didn't know. But she wasn't going to rebuff the little baby's gifts, instead picking her cat up and petting him gently, feeling his purrs against her sleeved arm.

"You're doing great, Nyanko," she chimed, taking her hand off him for a moment just to retrieve the contents of her feline's findings. "Amazing work as always. Thanks for everything, little kitty."

One gentle scratch behind the ears, and Nyanko blepped pleasantly in response.

A walk was good. NIGHT stashed what extra materials Nyanko had pointed out seeing in some other corner of the clearing, before setting her kitten in her bag and trudging off again, arms slung behind her head. Wandering, tired eyes, and an easy, lackadaisical pace. Where did she leave off, again, on the subject of self-deprecation?

Oh, Ren? Okay, then.

Ren was a problem.

Mostly because Ren had feelings of needing and wanting to be needed. That's why she'd let an assassin in her midst and let them follow her around. It's why she let them wear the face of someone she cherished -- in hopes that they would one day return the same appreciation towards her, mirroring the same one she had for their persona.

Selfish, that's what her motivation was. She knew it was clear from the moment their long blonde locks fell into place that what she was presented with should've, by all means, have been highly illegal.

But if Cardinal cared about the law, then she wouldn't be in this mess right now, would she?

NIGHT knew to repulse it. After all, when her Gemini had threatened her with an abuse of her own face, the mask intended to be purposed for wrecking havoc and initiating chaos within her peer group, she'd rightfully been disgusted by the idea. Even contemplated killing them, all the same. It should've been clear cut by then how she should've reacted in kind to the same scenario presented to her yet again.

Too bad she thought with her bleeding heart instead, right? With her wounds still fresh, a scab freshly scratched open, all DAY had to do to convince her to accept their appearance was in executing an act the equivalent of Superman putting on glasses to become Clark Kent. Sound in theory, and could even work in practice. But to Ren, who'd already become accustomed to their face no matter what they did to it?

She knew the jab was for her and her alone. And she let them go through with it.

-- bleeding this, bleeding that --

NIGHT ducked, avoiding a blow, before jumping back up behind them, digging Dracbane deeply into their back.

-- someone else should be spilling their insides out, not me--!

One pull, and two more foes advanced upon her further. NIGHT sank Dracbane down the two other spectrals' chests, as she was passing them by. Were her enemies a nuisance, or a bit of relief instead?

-- If only there was some way to steel her heart. But, this was what she wanted, out of her double's time and presence, right? Someone who looked and sounded like her crush that would give her the time of day again, and someone who didn't have the empathy, if not the backstory, to understand how hopeless her wishes and her plight must be.

Without those core details, she'd be free to want and need as pathetically as she could.

... Though, I wished the system didn't have to make such a big baby deal out of it, the little--

Calamity Disaster went off, and her art threw dirt up into the air from the floor, her strike giving form to her anger once again.

DAY didn't deserve this. NIGHT didn't deserve this, either, even if she chose it in the first place. Maybe NIGHT should've stepped up immediately and shut down the whole 'it'll bring you joy' thing. Broken that myth right there and then, switch to another, more dignified presence that surely wouldn't nudge her the wrong way in the future.

... Sigh. Wishful thinking.

Down went the initial set of groupies that'd dogged her steps. Then came forth the next batch of degenerates to be judged and slain.

With how Disguise would've worked, she'd either she'd get some poor other player else and rope herself into unnecessary drama in the future, defenseless and without details or evidence to support her claims of 'No, that's just me, they're just taking a break from being me right now'. Or, barring that, get some info brokers confused as to why a specific NPC was tailing her around, as though she was on an escort-type quest.

Although, there was a possibility that they could've taken anyone else's form. Something about there being 6 connections to be made between each human to locate every single individual in the world.

... Nah, that sounds wrong.

Although, why was a legitimate appearance even necessary in the first place? Uh, to throw off the idea that the Gemini was much more of a threat than from first glance?

Maybe? No, wait. It's Cardinal's strike against me. How could I forget--?

A stab with Dracbane, through the heart of one of the monsters. She wished she could keep her head on right, but her mind was spinning, spinning...

There was the easy possibility that robed figures were littered around Aincrad. All NIGHT had to do was look to Fleur, and even she kept a cloak on with her, even if it wasn't used as often nowadays. It should've been all the rage with the sneaky, subtle types, so DAY could've just blended in with them.

But NIGHT thought back on their personality, wondering if the robe and hood really fit them. Did their demeanor change through the time she'd known them? Had it? They'd been a secretive bastard before. Now they were smiling more. Maybe they would've in the past, too, if she could spy their eyes through their hood.

Grating. Ugh. This really hurt. It hurt to think, to reflect. To hold the object of her desires close while it was sinking teeth into her mental health. Then there was the issue of her and her alone, trying to consider the possibility that all of her aggravations solely tied themselves to NIGHT herself.

No, not NIGHT. Ren. Gah, she couldn't even keep them apart. This was stupid. Maybe the dance of death was distracting her so much she couldn't keep an eye of reality any more, much less keep track of her own thoughts. Time to finish this, then. Where was the Void, exactly?

Two quick swings of her blade, and down went the leftovers. Thanks for the talk, she thought to them, watching their figures fade and disperse, before -- ugh, did she really have to keep Dracbane all the time? Might as well hold it in her hand as she toiled on through the darkness. Things were going to appear all the time, anyway, and she was in the mood to sink her sorrows into strife.

Maybe she should take a nap to clear her head. But NIGHT wasn't the type to fall asleep outside, and keeping herself active meant less of a chance for DAY to catch up and sour her mood even more.

But in isolation, when all she had was herself? She'd get bitter and morose over what she'd been through. There were these phrases that people weren't the culmination of what they'd been through, that their whole was more than the sum of their parts. NIGHT didn't really get that, not in their entirety. After all, for someone so deeply rooted in the past while trying to move on to catch up with the present, her experiences were more often what she had left of herself.

It was difficult to cope. She knew who she was with her values, but even then they were shaky and gave way to her emotions still. Was that what people had meant by their phrase? Maybe. It felt fitting. She could see it happen.

Oh hey, some eggs.

There was also the idea that she'd just let her double room in with her. In her new house. Despite all that they'd burdened onto her, she really just let that happen, huh?

Idiotic. What was she going to get out of that arrangement?

No, no she knew. Stupid, she cursed to herself, kicking up dirt and unveiling another set of shinies. Stupid and dumb. Maybe if she didn't spend her time making up stories for herself and believing in the impossibility of them ever occurring, she'd be a right person and sent them away. Who else would board with their own (would-be) murderer, or be cajoled by them to go on an adventure, or much less befriend them?

Only NIGHT would. Because NIGHT was just that kind of loser who'd allow it to happen to herself.

NIGHT, or Ren?

...

Aggggghhhhhh. She needed to hit something really, really bad soon.

Her feelings really made her delusional sometimes. It didn't help that, in the middle of her task, her mind was set in disarray either. Thinking, grieving in anguish and agony while ripping apart her enemies in combat? It wasn't a good remedy for her brain. Just made her perception of life more addled and murky, and kept her movements smoother in battle, if not more lazy, sloppy.

Reckless. Exactly how she'd describe her strikes. Without thought behind them, because her mind was taken somewhere else.

Four chops down four zombies, her surroundings starting to look like an ashen wasteland, now that she was out of the mountainous clearing. Desolate was a good description of it, though the black and greys were starting to mess with her eyes a little. It was tough to spot her muted enemies, separate their form from the shadows they cast, the barren obstacles around the field, and her, especially, the warrior coated in harsh blacks herself.

Yukiro didn't have to think about this, did he?

Her thoughts went to her friend, barely seen during the time he'd shut himself in. And the news -- gods, she'd already vented her sorrows about it just the other day. She didn't want to revisit that minefield again.

No, back to Yukiro. She'd rejected him just fine. He got over it. No ill will harbored between them, she'd hoped. He didn't have to worry about someone he held close trying to kill him, did he?

... Did he?

Not that she recalled. But then again, not knowing how his dynamic with Tala worked was striking. A private relationship like that -- how peachy. A secret to keep from the world. Elegant. Did either of them face themselves yet? This was now out of curiosity, the woman trying to understand why this scenario was only so specific to her alone. Surely no one else out there was running about with a copy of themselves too, right?

As NIGHT's eyes rested upon the sea of fading crystals, she wasn't certain if she should feel special; blessed or cursed about the tragedy she'd found herself trapped in.

Maybe it was normal. Maybe it was incredibly normal, and she just had to get back into the loop with her various players.

... Oi, but how does one bring up the topic of 'Hey, my doppelganger tried to kill me the other day, and I'm wondering if it was normal that they just chase after me without ill intent after I'd spared them'? That sounded ridiculous. This line of thinking was dumb.

One smack brought her out of her tangent for the moment. Oh, thanks. With two hands she showed them respect, swinging her blade their way and marking out a deep cut into their form. And just because she felt generous, she continued her strike into two more foes nearby. How many enemies had she slain by now? It was getting hard to tell. All she had to do was check her inventory, and then she'd be golden for today, right?
