Floor 19
«The Colossal Shadow»
Recommended Level: 45
Non-Repeatable | Party Limit: 2
Credit Goes to: @Hikoru

Rewards:

  • 5,000 Col
  • SP
  • Tanos Statue: A small statue [Uncommon Item] that can be placed in a home, proving that you defeated the Colossal Titan. When used, it gives +15 Mitigation for a thread. When touched, it can give off the smell of the 19th floor's plains, the vastness that comes with them and the smell of winds carried miles from all around, and from the nearby mountains. The low winds come and go throughout a person's ears can be heard, but not felt. It can also be taken to group gathering to give an atmosphere.

Requirements:

  • At least 1 page of RP content (20+ Posts).
  • Must find «Colossus» with an LD of 15+.
  • Must climb to weak points to attack (2 posts each).
  • Must defeat «Colossus».

Summary:

Rumor has it that another giant beast-like Tanos has come alive on the 19th floor. He his twice the size of the floor boss, and is wandering the floor quietly towards each settlement, looking for someone to challenge him. Players have to find him wandering the plains, as although he is easy to find, the land is vast and treacherous, and the landscape seems to go for miles. Once he's found, you have to climb his body to the weak points on his hands and head to defeat the vast creature. Once defeated, he turns into a large pile of stone, forming a mountain of rock, as the sound of something large being shattered can be heard from a distance.

Outline:

[Note: «Colossus» receives his own separate roll from the player]
« Colossus »
Statistics:
HP: 1,000
DMG: N/A
MIT: 50
ACC: 0
EVA: -2

Abilities:

Weak Points: Weak points can be found on both hands, chest, and head. These can only be attacked up to three times before the weak point is gone, and you have to move onto the next one. If you miss attacking it, it will not count as using one of the three chances.
[Note: To climb to a weak point, you must spend 2 Posts climbing to it, and this goes for every weak point]

Oblivious: Since the boss is so large and you have to hold on and climb, players have no way to get space to «Charge» for extra damage, nor can they try to Stealth or Track the creature, as it does not care.

Shake: Every three posts after the boss is found, «Colossus» will "shake" trying to get the player off of its body. Players have to grip onto the creature, rolling an LD to see how strong their grip is on the creature. The next post, «Colossus» will roll his own LD. If his LD is greater than the player, the player is thrown off, dealing 250 Unmitigatable damage to the player, and they have to restart their climb to the next Weak Point.
[Note: LD items can come into effect when rolling, but no skills or mods that give an LD bonus can help]

The overgrown ruins of the nineteenth floor stretched out ahead of Shield as he rode atop a dark-maned hose. The highlights of the creature's sleek, black flanks shone with intense contrast to the solid color of its glossy coat. Shield clung hard onto the reins, and behind him in the saddle, Beat clung onto him. "Where the hell did you get this horse again, and why was it so important that I ride it?" The pounding hooves drowned out any attempts at conversation. All Shield knew was that as vast as the plains were that they were crossing, they were quickly coming up short on a cliff that towered ahead of them. Not having a proper grasp for how exactly to curb his tenuous control of the reins, he yanked back hard, causing the horse to whinny loudly in protest and come to a screeching halt, kicking up gravel and grass as it dug in its hooves. As it came to a stop, it bucked both players off and onto the hard ground before snorting and trotting off back in the direction from which they had hidden.

"That is the last time I let you talk me into 'taking the more dramatic entrance,' Beat," Shield complained, groaning as he brought himself back onto his feet and dusted off the dust and blades of grass that were now jammed into every joint of his armor. At the top of the cliff, there came an occasional rumble, each one only a second long, and each spaced out about five seconds apart.

Footsteps?

Shield found an inlet into the cliff, the insides of which lined with greenery and overgrown masonry. Shield found a walkway and began to climb, using his feet when possible, but soon having to rely on thick mats of ivy as something to grip and climb by hand. It was easily sixty feet to the top, but by the time he arrived, the rumblings had grown louder, and poking his head over the top, he could see why. Only a stones throw from the edge of the cliff, the great towering creature stood. Its body was ancient, or appeared to be so, made of the cracked and crumbling remains of old stone structures, intermingled with long overgrown stretches of mossy or ivy covered 'skin.'

"I think we found our guy," he whispered to @Beat.

Action: Climbing towards weak point 1/2

"Well, the guy said it would be smart to take the horse! And it's just like the game, so I thought it might be necessary. Plus, we got here way fas-" He words stopped as he too heard and felt the large footsteps near them. As they approached the edge of the cliff, Beat's heart began to race with excitement as he anticipated what he would see, and he was not disappointed. "Never thought I would get to live this game. This is awesome!" He said as he began preparing himself to jump. His eyes scanned for the weak spots on the colossal creature, which took little time to find.

Okay, guess I just jump for it.

"Here I go!" Beat screamed as he leapt from the edge of the cliff, the air filling his ears as he rapidly approached the giant. He stretched his hands out, grabbing for a tough clump of vegetation or a outcropping of ruin. Eventually, his hand found purchase on one of the Giant's arms. He kept his gaze upwards as he began to climb towards the first weak spot on the hand of the humongous arm.

If the great colossus noticed Beat, it showed no signs of it. It continued to lumber about, each footstep shaking the ground, jostling Beat and making his attempts to keep his grip much more difficult. Shield remembered what it was like playing the game this quest was based on. It was always hardest the further you were from the main body of the colossus. "Beat!" Shield called out, trying to time his words between thundering footsteps. "Don't wait until you're steady to start moving!" Boom! "As long as you're on the far point of his extremities-"  Boom! "you won't feel stable! It's too big of a range of motion! Head towards his trunk!" Boom!

Shield remained on the ground, jogging to keep up with the pace of the monstrously long legs. He didn't have the offense to put any kind of hurt on the creature, and he already knew from the reports Hikoru had given him that it would not be attacking him to take defensive damage from a parry or his thorns. This one, unfortunately, he was powerless to help. It was all Beat. The best he could do was to support - which meant Sharpness when Beat was about to reach a weak point and healing if he took fall damage. That, apparently, was the only true danger in this homage to the original colossus game. In the old version, it would have been much meaner, with actual attempts to kill the player by smashing, zapping, burning, or trampling.

Beat could barely make out Shield's words as the rustling of vegetation and the constant creaking of the colossus's ancient body filled his ears, "Easier said than done!" He shouted as he forced himself to reach for handhold after handhold, his muscles already telling him that this would be a tiring event. Beat's eyes widened as a shadow blocked out the sun over him as the colossus's giant hand came swooping down in attempt to swat him off of its arm.

"Too slow..." Beat muttered as he used all four limbs to quickly propel himself along the length of the arm. With impressive athleticism, Beat's hands found purchase on ruinic outcroppings around the wrists of the giant creature. Beat solidified his position as the colossus roared in irritation.

"Not even close, big guy!" Beat said confidently as he moved himself around the outcropping and to the hand where he positioned himself to strike the weak spot. "Gimme the juice Shield!"

Up overhead, oversized limbs swung, their motions seemingly in slow motion, though for Beat, with his position further and further out on the extremities, that actual speed of motion likely felt as though it were increasing. Shield gave a nod, realizing that Beat was likely lining up his strike, he began doing his part. He extended his arm and gripped his wrist, focusing on his palm as red light began to gather there and coalesce into a glowing sphere. He continued to keep pace with the giant, little pieces of masonry and clouds of dust filled his vision, the footsteps of the behemoth creating disturbances every time they fell. When his skill had finished charging, he cocked back his arm and snapped his eyes onto the player's cursor overhead, flinging the concentrated damage to Beat. "Catch!"

The cool down timer for the skill began to slowly fill, and he fell back a few yards so he would be not so directly underneath the colossus. "If you miss this attack, you will never live it down!" He smirked, his eyes trained up above to follow the action.

Beat managed to wedge his feet in between a couple of small indentations in the rocky hand of the colossus and stand up as his drew his spear. Beat's hand shot into the air as the glowing orb of Shield's skill flew towards him. The orb curved through the air, locked onto his signal as the giant hand flew through the air. the orb stuck the middle of his outstretched hand  and he grinned as he watched his damage number increase, "Oh yeah! That's the good stuff!."

Beat bent his knees to allow himself to be stable long enough to attack as he unleashed his multi-strike attack. His form shimmered and multiplied as he moved with great speed, striking the glowing weak spot with everything he had. He looked at the health bar above the weak spot and watched it drain by a third as he stowed his spear again and replanted his hands and feet, bracing for the next attempt to shake him loose.

Okay, I can hit this one two more times, then I have to find another one.

Black, ink-like fluid spewed from the gash left in the glowing white glyph marking the weak point. However, the things that the substance touched showed no sign of filth or contamination. In fact, the stuff seemed to pass trough everything like an illusion or a projection. As if in response to the attack, though who could say for sure with the colossus' inability to notice most anything happening around it, it began to shake its body, starting at its massive, heavy head, the moss and overgrowth covering its body swishing and hissing like the fletching of an arrow, tossed to and fro. It looked like a great lion shaking out its mane, and from there, it shook out the rest of its body, down to the shoulders, and then the lower arms, unable to truly figure out what was wrong.

Shield could barely see Beat being tossed around in the chaos, but the cursor that he could see while peering through the clouds of dust seemed to be holding steady. With that, Shield repeated the process, this time charging up a blue light and tossing it as well. It seemed to follow the greater contours of the colossus, almost as though orbiting as it sought out its intended target. "Fire two! incoming!"

Beat's ears picked up as he heard the rustling of the vines and overgrowth covering the colossus's body through the howling of the air blowing into his face. He looked up to see the creature beginning to shake its body from top to bottom and stabbed his spear into the rocky flesh of the giant's hand. Using his spear for stability, Beat found it remarkably east to withstand the violent tremors happening beneath him. As they subsided, Beat withdrew his spear and readied himself for another attack, snatching the orb of energy from Shield, a pale blue glow enveloping him as his energy bar rose.

"Alrighty, round two! ORAAAA!" He shouted as his form, once again shifted in and out of focus, it's shape changing with each strike and more black ink spraying from the wounds Beat's spear created. To the player's shock, the ink seemed to pass through him as if it did not truly exist.

The colossus' health had dipped considerably. The punishment that Beat had managed to deal just on the first weak point had been substantial to say the least. It was not as lopsided of an advantage as they had experience in previous fights in this chain of quests. However, the difficulty seemed to be ramping up in very real ways. "Beat!" Shield called out from the ground. His hand was out, the other palm wrapped tightly around his wrist as he focused another charge of Sharpness. Overhead, the creature stomped its way through the open plans that lay between the scattered ruins that dotted the nineteenth floor. "Beat, you're only going to get one more shot at that weak point before it vanishes! Make this one count!"

With that, he hurled the sphere, watching it arc through the air, dipping in and out of the plumes of dust that the monstrous feet of the stony creature kicked up. It bobbed and wove through the air, honing in on its target. "Package number three!"

Beat watched as Shields orb flew through the air, tracking Beat's movements as the colossus moved about. Beat thought o himself that is was very good planning on their part to not make accuracy a requirement for those skills. The speed at which combat sometimes happened would make such things practically unusable. He reached out and grabbed it, watching it refresh the offensive buff and drew his spear.

"Let's end this!" He shouted as his form distorted again, each strike of his sword art drawing more black blood from the creature and destroying the weak spot. The colossus flailed his arm about in an attempt to remove the pest that had stung him, but Beat's spear held where it had struck last and he remained where he was. Beat began looking for the remaining weak spots, spying one on the opposite hand of the creature and another on the colossus's head, then, Beat noticed the creature's health bar.

My bleed might end this for us...

Shield watched as the last of the colossus' health began to drain away, and he slowed his gait, slowing down and stepping back to observe. Although there was still some health left, Shield had the distinct feeling they were about to see a great being shatter directly under his ally's grip. He did not much like the idea of Beat suddenly having zero footing while suspended in midair and dropping straight down in whatever orientation he was in. "He needs to get ready to jump... or something..."

He put a hitch in his step and sped off again, cupping his hands around his mouth and taking a deep breath. With a burst of sound, the Howl skill activated, and a torrent of sound funneled its way up to Beat's ear, overshadowing the rumbling of the combat and the impacts of giant feet. "BEAT! I THINK HE'S GOING DOWN! EITHER DO SOME PARCOUR, OR GET READY TO DROP STRAIGHT DOWN WHERE YOU ARE!" He was concerned, but he wasn't worried yet. He had seen players take bigger falls, but the idea of death by fall damage was not a pleasant one. Almost as if anticipating the worst, Shield's hand began to glow as he unknowingly activated and began preparing his Heal skill.

Beat watched the health of the colossus further draining, threatening to drop to zero, "Yep! Time to go!" He said to himself as he pulled his spear out of the stone hand of the giant and scanned his surroundings for options. From this height, dropping was a poor option. At his level, he would probably survive, but what if the colossus fell on top of him?

"Okay, option B!" He shouted to himself once again as he ran to the underside of the giant's wrist and pushed off, rocketing himself towards the thigh of the mythic creature. He raised his spear and jammed it into the stone of the giant's leg, causing sparks to spray as it slowed his descent. He came to a halt, just above the creature's knee, letting out a sigh of relief as he prepared to jump down. Before he could decide the best way to finish his climb down, he began to fall through the stone colossus as the bleed status ticked away the last hitpoint of the monster.

"Damn!" Beat shouted as he passed through the creature's fading calf and hit the ground hard. His health bar took a minor dip, but the thing he noticed most was how out of breath he was. He had managed to stay attached to the colossus's hand the entire fight and it was now catching up with him. He closed his eyes as he attempted to slow his breathing.

Shield felt immediately better as soon as Beat was down to leg level on the colossus. It wasn't solid earth, but a spill from this height couldn't be anywhere near fatal for an experienced player like Beat. As the giant vanished, Shield saw his friend fall through the leg and land hard on his back. He jogged over to Beat to offer him a hand, reaching out to assist him. "Cutting it pretty close there," he said with a smirk. "Nicely done. Didn't know if we'd get it so quickly, but we did. That limit to the amount of damage a weak point can take is killer, though it was worse in the original."

He turned and began walking back the way they had come, retracing the long strides of the colossus. "In the old one, weak points weren't capped on number of hits. They were capped on overall damage. So no matter how strong you were, once you dealt a certain amount of its overall health to one spot, you had to move to the next." As they walked, Shield spotted a small sprig of an herb that had just missed being trampled. He picked it and stored it away.

Beat's heart pounded in his ear as he beamed up at Shield, "Dude! That was awesome!" He exclaimed, taking his ally's hand and using his sturdiness to pull himself to his feet. He glanced back to the indentation he had made in the ground and gave a small chuckle, "Well, my weapon went off on my second attack. that really helped. In fact it was the bleed that finished it off."

"No way, that would have been a nightmare in Sword Art Online. that was good design choice, because somethings do not translate well to virtual reality gaming." As they walked, Beat's pulled up his menu interface and summoned a small, glittering snowflake into his hand. It had taken two of the most valuable rewards from the Easter event to get them, but he had made, what he though, was a very good trade. he looked to Shield and brandished the snowflake, "Hey, I traded the easter stamp and the favor for this. Think that was smart? My thinking was that there will be more opportunities for items like the stamp and favor. I have never seen another one of these."

"A Snowflake is a rare item indeed," Shield said, raising an eyebrow. He faced his Manticore Mask shield outward to expose the inside concave curve. There, just above the strap that his arm fed through, was an identical sticker to the one that Beat held, only the luster had gone out of this one. "It's a lot of what has kept my build relevant, despite the shortage of demonics. I might hold onto that if I were you. Your spear is impressive. There may be more impressive things on the horizon."

He kept his eyes scanning the area for anything of value, but at the moment, nothing stood out to him. "As far as the exhilaration you felt up there, I'd imagine it's not unlike the first time my generation got to play the original. We had played open-world games before, but they never truly felt open. Too crowded by buildings and NPC's. They may have been sandbox games, but... That game was expansive and empty. Open fields and badlands. Cliffs and forests. And not another person in sight. In the main temple, there was the body of a girl you were seeking to revive, and there was a disembodied voice who would give you a hint - once - to find your next colossus. And then you were off. No words, no guides.... some of the most unique challenges of the game weren't told to you. You had to hear people whisper about them. The forums surrounding these games were just as much conjecture and rumor as they were fact, and there were complete falsehoods so well known that they might as well have been facts."

Shield looked over his shoulder at where the colossus had once stood. "Your first time climbing one of those things is unforgettable. And each one a puzzle. You can't climb all the way up his leg... but there's a spot on the back that shines like a weak spot... it doesn't harm the colossus' health, but when you stab it, the colossus drops to one knee and you can reach the balcony that juts out of its hips in back..."

Beat summoned his spear and tapped the information screen so that they could both read it, "A spear stronger than this? I know they exist, but that requires extreme luck." The familiar screech of a falcon flying up above diverted Beat's attention as Horus circled above. It did not appear that his familiar had seen anything, but the break in attention did give Beat the opportunity to spot a particularly colorful mushroom poking up through a tuft of moderately tall grass. He bent down and plucked it from its roots, stashing it into his inventory.

He shook his head, recalling the little bit he did play of the older version of Shadows of the Colossus as Shield regaled him with some history, "I mean, they could have made it that hard, but I'm not sure how well that would translate to VR. Really hard to say honestly, but anyway," Beat paused, stashing his spear and turning the snowflake in his hands, ""I suppose the next floor boss could change that, assuming I even get the drop again. Good weapons are crazy hard to find. You've said so yourself, and I dunno about waiting for a floor boss to drop something when I could get some hefty benefit from using this on my spear now and if another one can be found, that would put it at top tier once we beat this next floor boss."

"A couple of things to consider there," he said, his tone one of mild interest. "Those weapons that were once so hard to find are getting to be more and more common. When I find unique enhancements, there are options for balancing the item to make better choices. Hell, when we talk about those one in a million weapons that are better than your spear, I had two of them in my shop in the past week, and one of them I helped to create." His eyes roamed the ground ahead of them, settling on a small flowering herb which he collected and stashed in his inventory.

"The paradigm of the game seems to be changing. The ability to turn good items into demonics and upgrade existing equipment is becoming more and more common. While that Snowflake is exceedingly rare now, the Bunny Stamp and the Easter Bunny's Favor are likely not. Even I walked away with so many extras of those respec items that I can probably make my whole set demonic and then more powerful on top of that." His brow was furrowed. Although the concepts seemed alien of items once thought so rare becoming the new norm, they were quickly approaching such times. It was not easy, but he was currently in the process of having to upend his way of thinking when it came to strategizing equipment.

Beat's eyes went wide a the fact that Shield had seen so many demonics recently, but given the over-powered rewards for the event, Beat realized it shouldn't be so surprising, "Man, talk about power creep and devaluing the epic loot rolls someone got in the past." He folded his arms and clicked his tongue sharply as they rounded the mountain side, bringing the settlement into view, "good rewards are fine, but handing people a demonic with unique enhancements is kind of ridiculous." He laughed as he had a last thought on the matter, "Like, I fished for almost all of my eggs and got this rare item. What the hell?" He said, throwing his arms up into the air.

Beat stared ahead as he scanned the ground for anything useful before turning his gaze to his partner, "So, what is your plan for those reward items? Any specific projects in mind?"

"You're a power creep," Shield bantered back, giving Beat a slight smirk. "In all seriousness though... at the moment, I'm at an acceptable point even for a next level boss fight. I'm going to be redoing a few skills that will let me swap some decent items in to supplement for different situations. Other than that though... with some of the patch notes that have been shared, there may be some big changes coming down the pipes." Shield gave a little shake of his head. "I feel like spending anything now when we may be hitting something completely new is gambling."

The settlement was only growing larger ahead of them. Shield narrowed his eyes, remembering his endless search for items he could resell in his shop. There on the ground ahead of him was another sprig of the flowering herb he had seen before. He reached down and picked it as they passed, adding it to his growing inventory. "Whereas, worst case scenario, I made myself slightly less effective for one fight."

Beat furrowed his brow and hunched his shoulders as he put on a demonic grin, cackling, "I am the power!" He continue to smile as they came within view of the NPC guards, who nodded at the two of them as Beat gave them a wry smile. "That makes sense. It kind of makes you wonder why Kyaba is bothering to patch a death game when he's already won. I think for him, whether or not we get to floor one hundred and escape is irrelevant. He gets what he wants."

and either way, we lose something. Some way more than others.

Beat's fists balled up as his temper began to simmer. As they got to teleportation pad, Beat held out his arm, waiting for Horus to land. He took a couple of deep breaths to relax as his familiar soared down, perching softly on his outstretched forearm. He looked to Shield and smiled as he stepped on the pad, "See you there! INTI!"
