[F01-SP] Summer Blue -- <<TFFLAF:IV>>

Occasionally there would be spots like these in MMO's. Even in the space they were trapped in, they existed: hidden passageways that would teleport players if they'd performed the right action, stayed in a location for a decent amount of time. They would always be positioned close to the visible goal point-- the fun was in discovering where the secret laid around its vicinity.

Fortunately for NIGHT, the area had already been mapped out by other players beforehand. As such, she could gesture confidently over to the secrecy with a finger as DAY leaned in closer to their other to see it. At their closeness, NIGHT raised a brow. "I would've thought you would be more knowledgeable about such things."

"Even if I was, would you be willing to take my advice?"

Indigo eyes shifted towards the blue abyss by their feet. "... I guess not."

She'd stopped right underneath the largest lone tree on the sand, ushering her double to scoot in closer to her. Unfairly, the woman had caught a whiff of her duple's shampoo, and nearly tore herself away before the system could move them both.

One blink, and there they were. Up high above the seas, the wind was stronger on the desolate plain. It was a miracle how the grass could find itself stable, unfettered by the elements this high up, especially without surrounding brushes to keep them protected and safe. And with how lackadaisical the creatures in the distance were soaking in the weather, she figured they were accustomed to the powerful gusts, too.

NIGHT finally let go of her companion, their lasting touch from the minutes before now pressed towards the forefront of her mind. How she'd stayed within their periphery for so long, the woman couldn't say, but there was something discomforting about their parting, as much as she hated to admit it. The player had also wanted to dismiss her jacket at such a high altitude, though chose to zip up her front instead, shifting Nyanko to the inner pockets of her coat so that she could be free of her waist bag.

"There's another reason why I brought you here, actually," NIGHT finally dropped, as she slid upon her gloved fingers two separate rings of monochromatic colours. DAY seemed to glance at the accessories with an interest before returning their sights to the woman's face.

"What is it?"

A sundry of lights, and a standard blade was forged in its wake. NIGHT tightened her grip around its hilt, the sword weighing similarly to her cursed haunted weapon, if not lighter than so. "It's my technique," she admitted, shooting her double a fading feverish look over her shoulder. "You can perform tricks faster than the eye can see, right? Can you keep them validated by the system?"

"What exactly are you players even up to these days...?"

Just as casually, DAY pulled their own zweihander from empty space. The blinding weapon they'd created was molded in the exact replica of her own sword at the time -- except, of course, for its details lost in the white.

So that was how it'd looked like. What if I was wielding--

"Just..." NIGHT's vision trailed to the floor for a moment, before she checked back in with DAY. "Just humor me for a moment, alright?"

The duple merely hummed, taking strides forward to meet their mirror by her side. "Mind if I guess?"

"Sort of."

"It's part of you getting better at the game, isn't it?"

Their suspicion was scarce, but it was better than knowing she had been stalked on her outings with her friends. "Yeah," NIGHT finally added, gaze sweeping the land and settling on the flying creatures off in the distance. From where she stood, they were dotted with red, white and glittery blue. Looked somewhat like curled shrimp, actually, only with large insect wings protruding from their back.

"I think I can do that. Just want me to synchronize my settings with a standard player's, right?"

"Can you do sword arts?"

"S-sword arts...?" The Gemini nearly jumped back in alarm. NIGHT vaguely recalled them not even needing to take advantage of such systems, having that crucial game mechanic left out of their knowledge when she'd first mentioned the subject. She watched DAY hum nervously, lips pressed to their knuckles. After a moment's pause, they returned her a nod. "I-- I mean I can try. 's not like I really need to rely on them..."

"It'll only be temporary. I just need to know how someone--" at top caliber "--might perform."

"Just so you can watch them?"

"Just so I can watch them, yeah."

DAY's eyes seemed to shift from the monsters up ahead to their companion. An anxious look, NIGHT could tell, but the player couldn't grasp a hold of why.

"So you know," they said, all of a sudden. "I'm still top dog here, right?"

The woman's smile came through at the sound of those words.

NIGHT had almost wanted to laugh, but with her position being contested, there was no way she'd allow DAY to entertain lording that idea over her. The woman lowered herself, blade readied to her side. At the player's movement, her duple matched them with a pin-point accuracy, eyes seeming to burn with a fervent curiosity.

Needless to say, NIGHT was curious about the outcome as well.

"You'll just have to prove it then."

No marks nor countdown was needed for the two. Upon NIGHT's shift of her feet, the two were already set to race off towards the pack of enemies in the distance. Part way through their rush, the player thought it best to try and launch themselves forward with a Straight. She'd stopped, sword glowing, the edge of her blade brought to her cheek. So too did DAY mirror her action, and they promptly skid forward, landing a few feet away from their first combatant.

The moment the gold blur came into her vision, NIGHT brandished her blade off to the side, tip barely touching the grass by her feet. That white that had rested upon the sword's metal tore off into the wind in a fragmented scatter. Just by footwork alone, the player had easily overtaken DAY's temporarily lead as they remained stuck in position, waiting for the delay to fade off. She shot back her double a smug grin, in time for her Gemini to realize their losing position.

"See you at the finish line!"

"Wh-- Hey...!!"

"Hahaha~!!"

Her movements from before had been a feint, taught to her by only the best of swordsmen. Keeping the use of her sword arts at bay had also allowed NIGHT to unleash the first set of strikes upon their first mob pack, her weapon leaving traces of hatched red and white gashes upon the monstrosities that were the flying shrimp wurms.

In her fit of joy and celebration, she'd rushed head first into the enemies, her recklessness paying in dividends by long red gashes running down her darkened form. Three strikes in total, each from the swipe of a flying wurm's tail, the quick beating of paper-thin wings upsetting NIGHT simply from the buzzing they'd brought to her ears. She'd launched her attack against the ones who'd retaliated -- at least, in the flurry of glows and opponents it was what she'd imagined, her fight with the pack merely a backdrop to the sprinting of the Gemini inbound.

Having lost the fringe few to her original, DAY was left with picking up their pace to catch the handful only lurking around at the back. They were sparser here, much more evenly widely out, yet DAY took their opportunities where they could, sending out shock waves with dexterity and precision, all their attacks landing soundly against the front of each monster's frame.

NIGHT may have netted herself a brave head start, but DAY's attacks were just as relentless, if not more so than the player's. NIGHT had taken first blood, bringing down two of her foes with a swing of her blade, pushing two of the faux insects aside in a clatter, hard shells that once seemed to be squishy clicking their way upon the floor before exploding into a scatter of digital data. She'd issued two more slashes to the enemies tailing her movements, hoping that it would stay of their attacks for the moment. Sure enough, they followed in her dance just the way she preferred them to.

-- And the blond's pace seemed to match with NIGHT's original strikes, another set of damaging glows bringing down their opponents' health bars to just under half. With sword arts, DAY's movements had seemed to become more predictable, NIGHT noticed with a glance, and so did their damage output shrink to meet her own. She could see now why the doppel had given her proposition pause to begin with; clearly their original combat effectiveness had been weakened for them to play by her own rules.

A selfish maneuver, if NIGHT did chide herself so in the passing seconds. But her attention was stolen away when she'd noticed two unaggrieved sentinels roaming about the edge of the field. With two chops she'd set the ones closest to her to rest, and wove the calling of her distant opponents into her sword art rotations. While she'd managed to shift her movements deftly enough to catch one's attention, striking it firmly in its back, she'd barely landed her blow on the other, her rotational speed too slow to have caught the end of her system-guided movement.

Damn it--

At least her pause gave her time to notice her double's own work being ripped into shreds in front of her. Instead of NIGHT's own staggered executions of their dreaded foes mid-combat, DAY's Calamity Disaster had been one of extreme efficiency, especially so after they'd maneuvered their following to crowd around them in an arc after luring them from different angles. Their position had lead them to cull all four of the wurms with one move, the death squeals of the system entities loud when they were each stacked on top of another.

When DAY finally turned over to NIGHT after her opponents demise, her face was dawned with a brilliant, exquisite beam. "Hah!" They scoffed, hands to their hips as they watched their original dance around a chasing foe. Her blade had flared to life as she cast a vast wave to push one backwards while sniping another in the back. "It seems like I'd taken them out before you!"

If they hadn't been so caught up with their own wishful thinking, they might've caught NIGHT staring a bit too long at their face just to be shoved in the back by a dreadful lobstering pierce. The player stumbled forth, kicked out of their own flustered surprise, before following through with her movement, rolling away from her agitated opponent. "That may be so," NIGHT mentioned in return with a squint. "If I hadn't exactly picked up on extras to deal with."

"Eh?"

"You wanna run your kill count by me again...?"

"Um--"

NIGHT wheeled around just in time to deflect another charge from the closest pursuing crustacean's tailed blow. With the flat of her buster sword she batted it away, turning the wurm over to its side before shoving the tip of her blade through its body, silver metal squishing through its fleshy, meaty insides. A spark of light ran down her sword's length starting from its hilt, and with one downwards swing, the creature burst in another explosion of crystals. NIGHT spun forward in an attempt to prolong her movement, finishing her attack with another strike propelled against the shrimp closing its distance. Once it had been properly repelled, the player turned back over to DAY with a hand placed on her hip, sword sunk partially into the ground before her.

"That makes five now, slow poke. Better hurry if you wanna catch up~."

In irritation, her dopple grumbled, turning around with a flick of their cloak. An amused NIGHT watched them go with a chuckle, her last foe kept in the corner of her vision.

Better not keep her showman waiting. NIGHT pulled her blade from the ground as her target drew closer, the woman readying another sword art as she brought it to her cheek. Instead of letting the system pop off her movement and sweep her sword across her foe, she'd swerved around her opponent's form once she'd spotted the backing of her wurm in motion. She pulled the blade away from her face, the white glow from its light fading away from her skin, and in a turn backwards with her sword swung in a horizontal arc, she'd divided the construct cleanly in half, edge once buried in its carapace back.

A kick of its falling portions only destroyed the fading pieces early. The rain of shimmering crystals was NIGHT's personal tiny celebration for her momentary victory, before she started to walk herself towards DAY's position.

Of course, she'd already known just how powerful her doppelganger would be. NIGHT had only taken out two more foes at her leisure, and yet DAY was presently picking up four. Perhaps, NIGHT mused, watching them rout the floating figures as part of their collection routine, if she came fully buffed she could find herself sharing her other's position. Watching was less fun. But if it meant gaining some combat insight from her better, she figured that it would be worth it.

They had a certain flair to their movements, the player observed. Or were the lights a trick of the system at play? In the same manner any standard player might maneuver themselves to squeeze Calamity Disaster to their uses, DAY stepped in tandem, joined by the caveat of folding the lightness of their blade into their advantage, a similar predicament to NIGHT's own style in combat. The signature weightlessness of each of their swords allowed either fighters to perform faster cutting strikes. To that effect, DAY had been side-stepping and swapping her blade between hands as they made quick work of their opponent's health bars.

At first glance, NIGHT had imagined DAY to sunder apart their enemies one at a time. With six different strikes one could usher out within the span of a few seconds, it seemed reasonable to her if that was the entity's idea.

Her first impressions were shot with closer attention to detail, however. The tight positioning of the wurms had allowed DAY to control the pack and keep their movements stable, similar as to how one might have shaped dough. Each horizontal swipe pushed a chasing target back into position. NIGHT noticed how the wurms hadn't decided to attack them in DAY's rounds about their gap, either -- the distance between them and their opponents was apart enough that it'd kept them safe throughout their art's execution without fail.

The speed of which their other had been chaining their blows had also helped them give their lurkers' pause. When their assault ended, they ducked away from the fight at lightning speed, beckoning the quarry to follow them once again, and so they did without giving their pursuit a second thought. Simply by watching their fight take place, NIGHT felt motivated once again to pick up her blade once again to go ham on her enemies; as much as she could before deciding it a chore, anyway.

A draw of her sword, NIGHT retrieved her steel from the ground. No sooner than she'd started her movement did her shadow end their station over their pack, enveloping the area around the blond in a shower of digital fragments. DAY seemed to pause for a moment, allowing the system to catch up with their movements before they turned to observe NIGHT in turn. The entity tilted their head, curious to her maneuvers. "You're... picking up more?"

The player only found herself answering when Cardinal finally released their guiding hold. "Can't let you over take me now, can I?" Though she hadn't exactly planned on continuing their contest, NIGHT thought it a great reason to continue training otherwise.

"Oh, please." DAY grinned, folding their arms, sword held by their tucked arm. "You saw me take out those guys! I could probably take out another four more if I wanted to."

They glanced towards the aggravated shrimp monsters, honing in towards NIGHT's location.

"You rest now, and I'll be sitting on a count of two more on top of yours."

DAY waved their double's comment off, leaning forward to drape themselves over their re-materialized blade. It caught her arms folded around its guard, the entity setting their chin on its pummel in a hunch. "It's a mere trifle for a prodigy like me. I'm sure I can catch a break to watch you scramble for a moment and still beat you at your little game."

So -- what, are you tired from the energy expenditure or something?

As much as NIGHT knew her partner was right, the way they shrugged off her own threats was a teeth-grinding affair. The woman nearly channeled her momentary rage into taking out chunks of her assailants health bars; unfortunately, Cardinal had decided to take the side of its most favorite pupil this day and made the battle trickier than she'd first perceived it.

In the background, DAY snorted, and NIGHT whipped her head around so fast to glare at them that all the Gemini could do was look away and keep in their giggles.

"Snrk--"

A part of their laughs seemed to tug on her heartstrings. Utter nonsense, the woman felt, brushing their presence away from her mind. With a deep breath, NIGHT set out to collect themselves and focus on the battle at hand. All she had to do was copy their movements, right?

One dodge roll out of their four-way trap, and NIGHT set her blade to the side, two fingers on the flat of her blade. When she withdrew her empty hand, she spun once, then twice. Three strikes, four strikes, five. Each of them pushed the figures closer into the singularity of their cluster, until finally two of the enemies gave way. Their forms shattered in an instant, and the prisoners freed themselves from their stasis, though NIGHT's followed backing had managed to evade the wurms' sudden attacks.

So their move was indeed reliable. Perhaps all NIGHT needed to do now was perfect it. Human error made it incredibly possible for her to mess up -- meanwhile, DAY's guided perfect plays would always ensure the most optimal outcome for them. More emotions seemed to prick to life just as the thought graced her; ones of envy, this time, though it flickered out just as quickly as they came. NIGHT didn't need to hold back from err, it occurred to her mid-swing. She just had to perform it reliably enough to incorporate it into her arsenal.

Two dishes of light sundered apart the chasing wurms she'd already had in her vision. And to chain up on her already destroyed enemies, she'd struck two more bugs found buzzing in the distance. With only a handful of soldiers she was finding herself up against, NIGHT would have to drum up a different strategy. Two darts of purple went towards the blond.

--And a pair of luminescent blues were already staring back at her.

"Hey. Spot me."

"You don't need my help with these guys--"

"That's not what I meant," NIGHT interjected. As her enemies drew closer the swordswoman shifted the blade in her hand, getting ready to tackle yet another series of calculated steps. "It's the gaps between my movements. You can see them, can't you?"

"Uh..." The Gemini scrubbed at her cheek with a finger, face scrunched in the smallest bit of confusion. "I think you're over-estimating my prowess a little there..."

"What, no debug console?"

"Debug console?" They raised their eyes to the skies as NIGHT slashed at the frames of a few more shrimp wurms with ease. One of them swept the ground with their tail, causing the player to flounder and trip on their movements before diving into a recovery. Close call. "--Are you talking about cheating?"

The thought hadn't even crossed her mind that her request was bordering on breaking game rules. Still, NIGHT cursed under her breath as she tried to think, edging away from her other combatants. "Either way, I don't think I have access to that, so..."
