[F8-PP] Rage untamed (Ferocious Foe: SoW1)

Recommended Posts

Exiting the dark building filled with rather shady looking silhouettes of players who exploited information for coin, Raidou had what he had paid for albeit vague. There was a rumor of a beast on this floor that paraded through the canopy and was more ruthless than the common rabble. It was clear that something needed to be done and understanding needed to be obtained. This beckoned the wanderer to seek out this creature, unsure if he should call for assistance or not. He had little to go on and as such did not want to bring unnecessary risk to anyone but himself, and with a pull of his equipment tighter to his frame before setting into the dense vines and emerald green pillars he presses through the thick thickets. His red robe was still ever visible through the backdrop, and with it the designation of a choice was made clear.

"You stand out like a sore thumb, which I suppose is handy for a tank."  Freyd emerged from another tangle of vines, his dark clothing helping to conceal him within the play of shadows created by the mass of foliage.  "It's about time that you and I worked directly together without the crew in tow."    His eyes pointed back towards the building from which Raidou had come.  "You're going after the beast?  Good.  We'll make quick work of it together."  He knew full well that his own skill didn't match the guild master's, but that wasn't the point.  Calling Forgiven Disobedience to hand, he forged into the jungle.  Raidou had also never struck him as the type for idle chatter.

No one should go after big game like this alone, and he'd watch their leader's back as best he could, regardless of his preference.  Firm Anima, nay... Aincrad... could not afford to lose him.

Notably, it wasn't easy to sneak up on him, but Freyd had managed to as the vocal alert to the guild member's presence causes him to pause and turn. "As intended..." he remarks to the quip regarding his rather pungent shade of the robe on his back. "You have no difficulty in understanding my motives. In most I meet I am met with confusion but you Freyd..." he watches as without a pause a glimmering blade helps him start to carve a path through the thicket. "You get what I am doing." it was this reflection that brought him to not fight with the whispers he had brought forth, he knew that if any one of the guild would be capable of knowing when to fall back or how to exploit a weakness with caution it would be him. The clammer of birds on the horizon alert them both to a disturbance just north of where they stood, and turning to Freyd he'd pay a nod and remove his own weapon.

Raidou was no fool.  Freyd had realized this the moment they first met while helping Eruda and Kiluia on some of the early introductory quests.  There was a keen, no-nonsense candor about the man that he found refreshing.  The man's ability to read people's motives made him a good leader, but also made futile Freyd's normal expenditure of effort on the maintenance of false pretense and expectations.  Lost were his awkward gait and bearing, the hunched-in stance and naively blank stare.  He let the calculating hunter within loose, seeking their common prey.  Suddenly agile and silent as the shadow of the wind, Freyd moved at speed through the thick underbrush, disturbing nothing.  Coming up on a small ridge crested by a large, moss-covered tree trunk, he bent low to scan the gap between it and the ground, and froze.  Raising his long white blade level and parallel to the trunk, he turned slowly and exposed only the corner of his mouth beneath his cowl, a small smile signifying that their quarry had been found.  The wisest strategy required Raidou to act first, so he waited, poised to follow.

Freyd took the lead, following the sounds they had heard that lied just mere minutes from where they stood. Raidou holds back giving the man some leverage to hold over the intended target, if it was a runner it would be nice to have Freyd in position should it attempt to flee. A peak on an incline, a rotted out the wooden spire painted green with reclamation he finds a grin plastered on Freyd's lips. Raidou kneels down without a word, paying Freyd a nod and a wave to one side with two fingers pointing to the whisper first and then tapping his open left with a closed fist on his right. A setup to corner it and blindside it from both sides, the yellow blade flares as Raidou pours his stamina into it still in his hand not quite the length of Disobedience but powerful none the less. As soon as Freyd found his position, he would let it rip as to keep the battle controlled.

A quick tip of the brim of his cowl was all the acknowledgement that was required.  Freyd vanished into the underbrush to the right, his blade trailing him in a reversed grip, weaving like a snow leopard's tail behind him.  He dared not dismiss it, should their prey detect them.  A last minute parry might save his life.  Moving as swiftly as he could, he circled around to the far side of the clearing where Kumatetsu was busy scavenging, likely gorging himself on whatever local wildlife had most recently fallen to his ferocity.

Sending a quick message through guild chat, he confirmed that he was in position.  Tightening his grip on his blade's hilt, he braced his legs against the thick and heavy roots of a nearby tree, ready to launch himself the moment Raidou made his first move.

"Up top, Persi.  Be ready."  His voice was barely a whisper.

Darkness fell like silent syrup from various shadows cast upon his own figure and pooled into a lithe figure that slunk up the trunk of the nearby tree and positioned itself to strike from above.

Running his weapon down the steel it engulfs in light akin to sunlight, the solarite activating as its charged with his stamina. He looks off to where he assumes Freyd may be looking back to him and pays a nod. His stance then deepens as his legs widen. The pair of them would blindside the thing in tandem, leaving no chance of rebuttal. Sliding upward the bear of long talon and a signature and defining strip of slightly longer hair running down its spine. Tanned fur that glistened from the ball of fire overhead, it could feel as though something was amiss with sharp inhales through its nostrils was picking something out on the wind. A bit of twig or perhaps bone hung from its maw as it moved onto its hind legs, showing its stature and size to both players as it towered at 10 feet from the soil.

Planning to batter the beast with a series of rapid strikes and force its attention on him while Raidou strikes from the opposite side, Freyd launches himself as planned, only to discover that the root he had braced himself against was rotten.  One foot pushed forward while the other slid back.  All Raidou and the bear heard from the far side of the clearing was an awkward, high-pitched yelp and the sound of tearing thread.

Choosing to tumble forward rather than risk performing a full split, Freyd rolled unceremoniously out into the open clearing.  Coming to a stop when his feet braced against the bear's gigantic paws, the rest of him pivoted upward and crashed face-first into its backside.

"Oh for the love of... it's the [censored] Monkey King thing all over again!"

Kumatetsu cut a loud fart in response, rearing its massive head and body to examine the fool that had interrupted its lunch.

Raidou watches on as a break of the place that Freyd had perched upon gave way, a sense of caution calls him to rip forward and draws the things attention before it would have the opportunity to strike the now exposed whisper. Unannounced to the player one of the dangling vines hanging from the trees above had found itself wrapped to his ankle. As his art activates and rips him forward in assisted and rapid speed, the line becomes taut and bungies him into a mirrored tumble. Sliding into the field on his back with his robe bunched up under his back, his glasses off kilter. Raidou unceremoniously busts up laughing as the bear eyeballs them both. "Well that could have gone better." Kumatetsu was agitated by the sudden additions to its lair, choosing the red clad swordsman and slamming heavy paws down into his sword as he parries while prone. Raidou still laughing tears his heel and knocks it down with them, the truest form of combat. Wrestling.

Peeling himself from the bear's backside and diving away the gigantic bear took a swipe at Raidou with its massive black-clawed paw, Freyd re-evaluated his options.  He was still blinking away the pungent and acrid odour that wafted in the air around him, making a slightly greenish tinge in the sparse beams of sunlight the penetrated to the forest floor.  Spinning in a low, wide arc, he tried clipping its feet out from under it.  His blow lost momentum as he slipped in a proportionally large-sized turd, the white blade bouncing harmlessly off the great bear's thick fur and fatty hide.

"This is not how I expected this was going to go!" he added, calling out to Raidou.  "Best laid plans, first contact with enemies, and all that jazz.  How about we just do this the old fashioned way and cut him to pieces?"  Staggering back a few steps, he tried to refocus himself and figure out how to turn this debacle around.

Raidou pulls himself from the forest floor, the bear taking a moment of pause after finding no sway in its attacks and becoming rather winded. The last bit of laughter fall from his lips with a smile "I suppose we may have been overthinking this. It actually looks rather harmless, I am beginning to suspect the rumors may have been exaggerated" the vanguard captain comments as his weapon heats up as the bear can sense his motives. A large black claw slams into Raidou's right side, as the swordsman rebukes the blow with blinding speed, the counter attack claps like thunder and tosses the creature into a spire of wood. It stumbles forward with leaves gracefully swaying around it, a sharp exhale as Raidou pivots his blade as it begins to gain in size and girth. Despite this Raidou cannot help but raise an eyebrow, his targeting showed it's life total had been halved by a single swing.

Freyd tried the straightforward approach with a direct stab aimed directly at the middle of the massive creatures' centre of mass.  Nope.  In an act of grace normally reserved for the dancers of the Bolshoi ballet, the bear somehow defied the laws of physics and sucked in its absurdly large gut while performing a perfect pirouette.  All that was missing was a over-sized tutu and and a pair of pink, size 124 ballet slippers.

By this point, Freyd assumed that Cardinal was up to his old tricks, or that the random number generator was just messing with him for kicks.  The deadpan look on his face conveyed his sincerest 'this can't [censored]-ing be happening' look.  Staring down at his own fist, he seriously considered just switching to basic attacks and letting Persi take the.... PERSI!  How could he have forgotten?!   Up above, a pair of confused-looking blue eyes were staring down, wondering what he could possibly be playing at.

Looking on to the bear trying in earnest to understand exactly how off this encounter had felt in an almost cartoonish way, as if the system was running some kind of prank. His stance turns to a more passive one as his sword lowered and the art dispersed, lost in the oddity as the Kumatetsu was parading around Freyd's attack. "Something is wrong. There is no way something that size could..." the nomad's words break off mid-sentence as he is stupefied by his own deductions, beginning to analyze what was transpiring and find whatever loophole or effect this thing was using upon unsuspect victims. The grand puppet master was having fun at the player's expense obviously, but how still remained a mystery. One that he wished to learn as to not be caught off guard by it when it reared its head again. The player's couldn't be the culprits, could they. Nope.

Embarrassed by Lummock's terrible performance, Persi decided to take matters into her own diminutive, shadowy hands.  And by that, she more specifically meant her claws.  Dropping down from her high perch on the bough above the battle, her amorphous dark form solidified into whirling vortex of negative energy and vengeance incarnate.  In an instant, she mauled and shredded the head of the beast which Freyd had been otherwise unable to touch, and which had given Raidou and equally surprising hard time.

Kumatetsu's body, which had grown with its increasing fury, came crashing down into the clearing, Freyd barely dodging out from beneath it, with its head completely gone.  The rest of its phenomenal, furry form began to dissipate, leaving only a small, mongoose-shaped void of pure darkness in its place, her two brilliant eyes held high as she proudly strutted back towards her stunned looking master.

"So, I guess the whole 'breaking the boulder' mongoose-style thing wasn't such a bad idea after all?"  He looked from her to Raidou, a look of utter disbelief still plastered on his face.

Kumatetsu ushered far to close to the treeline where the small mongoose was perched, and with one rather precision filled rampaged removed its head. Where both the players had failed, Raidou smiled as Freyd's little Persi had become the MVP of this battle. While the two of them were struggling to come to terms with this creature's adaptability the familiar had easily dispatched it. "I suppose not." he looks to the whisper with an agreement of his own, removing the black book from his pocket and drawing one horizontal strike through the quests name as a label to its completion. "Odd but not overly difficult, Although..." Raidou looks down at Persi strutting with pride in its movements "Perhaps having a familiar may not be a bad idea before more attempt it." spoken as Kumatetsu's massive carcass began to fade into a glimmer of blue, the cardinal taking back it's lost.

"Have you never picked one up?"  Freyd seemed surprised.  "Their utilitarian value is unrivaled.  I'm genuinely surprised that someone as function-driven as yourself would not have sought one out before now."  Something didn't add up.  Raidou was the very epitome of efficiency.  Materials practically gravitated towards him from their spawn points, just for the opportunity to be  considered for crafted.  There was no way this man would have overlooked such a pertinent and essential detail.  His eyes narrowed and looked his companion over from top to bottom.  Persi often remained concealed within the shadows he cast, or in the dark voids between layers of clothing.  It was a practical convenience, and Raidou was the only person he'd met who was as or more practical than himself.  He must have a familiar.  The only questions were 'what' and 'where'.

There was no point in prying.  He would reveal it eventually, or it would reveal itself.  All good things to those who wait, he reminded himself.

Raidou would not lie to anyone, especially a member of his guild. Thankfully usually his demeanor deferred people from asking so things could remain concealed, but Freyd was not like the others in the fact he was not afraid of asking the difficult questions. "I do have one, but I keep it under wraps. Most would not understand it." he would shift the subject, as holding cards close to your chest allowed you the upper hand he had learned. "Simply an observation given how valuable your's just proved to be." looking into his quest information with it updating automatically to another, it appeared this quest was part of a chain. "It seems this is not over, we have more to take on and after that, It appears I could and should still need your help." Raidou remarks with a flare of his glasses as he pushes them up the bridge of his nose.

"I have a long progression still ahead of me.  Having more quests to do is no hardship."   He'd filed Raidou's response regarding his familiar away for future reference.  Now was not the time to press.  "As to the next steps, I believe I am well-equipped to assist you."  He knocked his closed fist on the bleach white blade in his hands, hearing it resonate in song, rather than the tinny clank of metal.   "We should be able to make quick work of the leech lich and its minions."  He looked around the clearing one last time, ensuring that nothing significant had been overlooked.  "RNG-related embarrassment aside, this went pretty much as expected.  I imagine that we should fare well against the rest of the chain."

"Speaking of which, Firm Anima seems to be progressing well in its growth and development.  The new recruits are promising, but the meteoric rise of its leader has surely not gone unnoticed.  Have they tapped you for the front lines yet?"  Freyd's tone hadn't changed by so much as a warble.  These were matters of business, to be conducted practically and candidly.  Their growth could attract undesirable attention.  He considered It part of his duties to be ready for it.

Fiddling with the frames on his nose, a shortened response to his companion on the journey "Agreed on all fronts." a reflection of light quickly darted across the ground as they slid. Raidou pivots the weapon on his grasp, moving it over his shoulder with an unintended swipe to his right with a flourish. "It's rather abrupt, I hadn't seen such an explosive gain in its numbers beforehand. As long as they set themselves up for success, and I hope the foundation I've laid makes it that much easier, then they should no trouble following in my footsteps into the frontlines. I have been drawn into a meeting for the frontlines, although I'd struggle to say it was organized." Raidou went off a bit on a tangent with a scratch at the back of his head and a smile, but as a head of Operations, this was exactly what Freyd excelled in: Information.

Freyd's grimace was confirmation enough of his disappointment at the reported disarray, but his eyes betrayed no surprise.  These were kids, for the most part, and gamers beyond that.  A handful of diehard gamers would have made their way into the beta, but the sheer popularity of the marketing and promotional campaign would have attracted all sorts.  Kayaba would have wanted as wide and diverse a sampling as possible to serve as a control group for his twisted experiment.  Jerk.

"I'll scout ahead at our next destination.  Take whatever time you need and let me know when you want to meet up again."  He nodded his appreciation for Raidou's assistance in completing this mission, but his wheels were clearly already working on his plans for the next.  As suddenly as he had originally appeared, Freyd wandered into the thick jungle foliage and vanished.  There was much work remaining to be done, and it needed doing so that he could see the state of the front lines for himself.
