[F10 - PP] "On Treacherous Tides" <<Halloween Special Dungeon>>

Recommended Posts

A Val-halla of a Time. [Halloween Special Dungeon]

"You know, for some reason I thought that finding the place by 'just following the river' meant that it was going to be a lot easier than this", remarked Elora with a sigh, "Just how long is this thing?" Katoka and her had gotten word from other members of Firm Anima that a dungeon had appeared on this floor. She couldn't recall many of the details that had provided, other than that the two of them would need to locate a ghost ship to sail them to some place to fight some enemies. Of course, there was also an obligatory warning that they needed to be careful and that they needed to invite others along to aid them in the battles. Elora wasn't sure if Katoka had taken the liberty of tracing the identities of those present at the Battle of Tanabata, but she was too lazy to do the same, so she simply posted an open invitation for anyone who was interested to join if they wanted to. We'll see if anyone turned up. Not long after, they happened upon an inlet that appeared to house several bioluminescent vessels that were tethered to a twisted driftwood dock. "Think this might be the place we're looking for", speculated Elora as she dropped her heavier equipment in anticipation for the rest. "And it doesn't look like anyone else has showed up yet. Are you sure that we really needed to leave two hours earlier than Freyd recommended? Well, whatever. It'll give us some time to have our last meal -- like Vikings before they rowed off to war!"

"Next time I say we rent a horse and carriage or something, this walk was ridiculous." Katoka complained as her and Elora walked along the riverbank. "Who sends a boat to pick people up in an underground river anyways?" she pouted and crossed her arms. Since this dungeon was fairly new, she wasn't about to do as much research as she would have liked. A creepy ghost ship on a spooky river did not bode well in her mind. The two had loaded up on food and anything else they were told could help so they could survive this adventure.

As the two rounded a few large rock outcroppings the samurai spotted a few weathered ships with a ghostly glow to them, tied to a long dock made of rotting wood. "Oh that looks safe." she said regarding the dock, "Are we sure that we won't just fall in the water before we even get to the boat?"

Katoka sat down next to Elora and began pulling out the packed food, "To be fair, we were looking for this place for a while. Plus being early is right on time!" she held up a bit of steak as a sort of toast, "To our impending doom!" she said in a spooky voice before stuffing her face.

  • 2 weeks later...

Violet was standing on the edge of the river, Righteous Executioner buried halfway into the sand next to her. She hadn't bothered to sheathe it, given that it would likely smear the toxic venom she was planning on putting on the weapon all over the sheath, which she would much rather avoid doing. She fiddled with her menu a bit, making sure that her mask and cloak were equipped and ready, and checking her inventory to make sure that she still had a teleport crystal or two in her inventory. You never know when something could go dreadfully wrong in a dungeon like this. She glanced over at the other two people that were already present, a bored look on her face. 'Guess we're still waiting on some people to show up, and setup to be done, huh..' she thought, before downing a damage potion, and pulling her blade out of the sandy ground, wiping it clean before carefully applying the toxic salve to the blade, making it briefly glint with a pale green light to indicate the item being effective on her weapon. With that, she swiped it to ensure that it was completely done, before clipping it to her waist, and making her way over to the others.

"Say cheese, Mish!"

"'Cheese'?"

A flash went off from the small prism held between her fingers. An wouldn't see the resulting picture until she had it developed, but she knew the only thing she could have captured was either her teammate's blank stare or the exact moment she raised a hand up to shield her eyes. She instantly pouted; her friends in the real world could have picked up on it so easily. "You were supposed to smile!"

"Then you should have told me..."

She was hopelessly stuck between wanting to facepalm and wanting to give the precious innocent angel a hug. So instead, An stuck Arabelle's record crystal into an inventory window and stomped off. Ninety-nine left to not screw up. Maybe she could sneak in a couple in between their combat encounters. Maybe none of them would have Mishiro unless it was a candid shot.

Oh, right, the dungeon! The girl picked up her pace, and by that time her DPS has caught up too, both walking side by side, fully geared and buffed to the teeth. They had been running down the paved path for almost half an hour now, and from the vantage point they had stopped at, it was only a few more minutes before they reached their destination. An picked out their team from the misty riverbanks easily because they were... the only people there.

Were they in the instance already?

An rushed over.

"Helloooo!" She stopped, hands on her knees, still breathing heavily from their long walk, and she managed a relieved grin. "Made it in time~. Nice to meet you everyone! I'm An, and I can tank! ( ╹▽╹ )"

Four small pouches, all packed to full with a certain purple-haired performer's crystals, appeared in the midst of the loose circle they'd unintentionally formed. "Take one each, please. They're all instant use. And um, a few lucky bags also have debuffs!" She neglected to mention that it was blindingly obvious which of those were; two were larger than the others. She pumped her fists. "Let's all do our best, okay?"

She tossed a larger pack to Mishiro, and as the packs were taken one by one, the tank tilted her head in confusion.

Eh? Were they missing someone?

Jack's Corrupted Legacy
T1 Demonic Rapier -- Cursed | Blight II | Burn

[reference] "...and they shall cast them into the furnace of fire, where there was weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth." A malicious, unstable weapon hidden beneath a plain semblance. Patterns of vines and fleur-de-lis are etched onto its black swept hilt and its blade is 38 in. long. It takes on a crimson red aura when a Sword Art is activated. At random, unpredictable occurrences, the weapon will burst into flames - sometimes red, sometimes a darker hue, and sometimes a pitch black in color - and inflict a strong damage-over-time effect on its enemy. | []

Svalinn
T1 Demonic Shield
-- Cursed | Frost Thorns | Frost Aura | Mitigation

"The shield which once stood before the sun and kept the Earth from being set aflame." A small round shield perpetually encased in a thick layer of unyielding ice. Its surface is uneven, with sharp ice crystals jutting out and rising up, and any attack aimed at it would sure result in a nasty counter-effect. Attacks made from afar or otherwise aren't left without retribution either, as the opponent would feel themselves surrounded by an intense chill. When equipped alongside any item with a flame enhancement, the ice becomes dyed with an auburn hue but does not lose any of its intensity. | []

Carol of the Bells
T1 Demonic Light Armor
-- Cursed | Frost Aura | Mitigation II

Red velvet, fluffy white trim, drops all the way down to the user's knees -- it's very obviously a Santa cloak. Andromeda will never leave vanity details to NPCs ever again. | [

Five players.

She took out a timepiece from the inside pocket of her longcoat, unwrapped the soft velvet she'd folded it into and flipped its lid open. They had a few more minutes left to lose. She held it in her hand for a moment longer, tracing a finger along its rim. The more superstitious sorts would have done it as a silent invocation for luck — but in the moment, her mind was blank, seeking only the comfort of something familiar.

"DPS. ...Two-handed battleaxe." Mishiro tucked her pocket watch back into its safe place and crossed her arms. Further introductions weren’t needed; her name appeared beneath Mina’s as soon as she accepted the party request. "Has everyone done their research? Let me give a quick rundown. We're facing three bosses—"

"S-spoilers!" a very startled Andromeda squawked.

People who officially haven't done their research:
     1) The very same player who invited her.

“Three bosses,” Mishiro finished, mentally discarding a large chunk of her prepared script. She imagined dusting off her hands, too. “Our instant debuffs are just enough for the job, and each player who has a set in their battle-ready right now has been assigned to a different type. Have one in your hand before we head to each battle, shatter it as soon as we engage. Andromeda should be able to handle the boss’s attacks, but in the case where she’s preoccupied or losing too much HP, the healing crystals she just distributed are targetable.”

The girl unfolded her arms and was the first out of the circle when the wails from the distant vessel began to cut through the air. “Whenever you’re ready…”

Ozwald had heard about the dungeon that appeared on the 10th floor, but didn't really know anything about it himself. The open invitation that he had found through his guild, Firm Anima, told him to walk down this river until he met up with the other members of the party that he would be joining. Looking over to the tumultuous water of the river beside him Ozwald wondered if he was even walking in the right direction, he had been following the river for over 10 minutes, and was beginning to get worried that he read the notice wrong. Opening his HUD and looking it over again, Ozwald confirmed he was going the right way.

This was Ozwald's first time on a floor higher than the second, and that made him nervous let alone the fact that he was meeting up with other people. After another 5 or so minutes Ozwald could see what appeared to be a few glowing ships off in the distance. Picking up his pace, Ozwald came upon a group of 5 girls that were conversing by the water. "Sorry I am so late." Ozwald said waving, not being able to mask the british accent that he tried so hard to cover up. Ozwald graciously accepted a few gifts that were offered to him before looking at the groups levels, realizing that he was by quite a bit the lowest level of the group. Ozwald sat down and consumed all of the buffs that he had bought in preparation.

When Mishiro extracted herself from the circle, her gaze lingered briefly on An.

—Whenever she was ready.

Because in what world did a tank ever bring up the rear?

E e p.

Their ride drew close, the thick curtain of fog parting to reveal its torn sails, and like what you would expect from a boat that looked like it was one heavy stomp from breaking in half, it was slow. Watching it kind of felt like being strapped onto a carriage midway through its steady ascent up a drop tower. And she didn't like most amusement park rides after she'd tried them out the first time. An was just about ready to hurl herself into the water if it meant she'd be free from the claws of dread that tightened around her mind with every passing second.

If she talked to Mishiro, she'd freak out even more because the girl's composure hadn't wavered in the slightest since they met an hour ago and she knew a huge part of any DPS's confidence came from having a tank that was... not freaking out. So instead, she whirled on the group's confused newbie. "Don't worry, you're completely on time!" —To miss being intimidated by her. Smiling, An handed off the last bag of treats and delivered a friendlier version of Mishiro's earlier instruction. When she finished, she wrung her hands anxiously beneath the cover of her velvety red cloak and her sights curiously strayed to the unusual name that had been the last to join the line of their party's status bars. "'Grimm Reaper,' huh? So... do you use a scythe?"

A foghorn blew, and the prow fell open, forming a bridge between the docks and the ghost ship's hold. An pushed to the front of her party, peering in. Blessedly, the spirits they'd heard from a distance had quieted when the ship opened, but who was to say it would stay the same once the ramp pulled up behind them? Maybe they were just enticing them with the false promise of things being not as bad as it seemed.

She remembered the hedge maze. And she traced a hand along the ice cold edge of her auburn shield.

"I'm heading in~."

Up the ramp the merry band of noobs went. When the last person had stepped into the ship, An turned around to check on them and thought she felt something brush against the nape of her neck. No one should be behind her.

And did any of her teammates whisper like that?

Eeeeeee--

Nope, nope, nope. If all of them were holding back their compulsion to visibly freak out, maybe she could do it in their stead. A little. "I have no idea where we're supposed to go—" she pointedly avoided looking at Mishiro "—but abovedeck shouldn't feel so cold!" An hadn't realized the hold had been so chilly until she'd said it out loud, and she suspected it had more to do with the ship's make and its... other passengers than the actual environment. Barely a few minutes had passed since they stepped off from the docks and it had been a perfectly normal evening then. "And maybe we could get our bearings too. Come on."

—And she really didn't want to fight down here.

Tugging down at the edges of her red woolcap, she set a hurried pace towards where she knew the stairs leading to the deck should be. This shouldn't be different from any modern cruiser, right? An wasn't so sure. She felt the movement of the ship beneath her feet — they were probably leaving the docks, then entering an instance at some point — and she tried to concentrate on the sound of her and her party's steps, and it worked, until she started to think there were more than five pairs of feet traipsing along behind her.

She dropped back, nearly toppling Mishiro over. "Have you ever been on a ship before?"

"No."

And she thought the girl would stop there like she always did until she felt the slightest nudge to her side. Mishiro had matched her pace, the sharp clicks of her heels spaced only a few precise moments after An's steps.

"I suppose I was never in a position where I could understand the appeal to it."

An was only half-aware she'd lowered her voice to a near-whisper. "Y-you don't have to be in any position to understand ferries are sometimes better than airplanes! You know, for travelling shorter distances?"

"You'd have to actually consider travelling first." Mishiro paused thoughtfully, and in the span of that brief moment, An was once again consciously shutting her thoughts from the ghosts that lingered at the edges of their group. "Summers were only a little less busy on the other side, and there were more than enough things to do in the city. At least, that's how I saw it."

"Sucks that this is your first then, huh...?"

An flashed her company a sympathetic smile, but whether she saw it or planned to return the gesture, she gave no indication. They'd reached the base of the stairs, and when the girl at her side abruptly ended their conversation to fall back and wait for An to advance, the first of the three's location was a dead giveaway.

She nearly frowned.

At least the walking spoiler meant they couldn't possibly be doomed to wandering these haunted halls forever—?

An pumped a fist. "Prep your crystals, everyone!"

"We will be alright."

Her second's assurance followed her all the way to the surface. The skies were pitch black, and it was only then, as she hastily stashed away her woolcap before the winds could blow it away, that she realized the purple glow they'd sighted from the shore was coming right from the cold wood material that made up the entire ship. She took another step out into the open and lightning split the veil of night in two.

We will be alright.

Because stomping down the deck was not the horribly misshapen wraith she'd feared, but rather Generic Big Oaf #10371. He wielded a pillar(???) in one hand and boomed out an Introductory Monologue.

[Whatever, it's been a week and the party needs to move forward.]

"I hope bringing this shoddy boat down with us isn't in the mechanics, Mish!" An yelled over her shoulder.

She took a deep breath, broke the first crystal, and the brilliant red of her cloak fanned out behind her as she charged into the open deck.

Violet quickly made her way over to Andromeda, gathering the items that she was passing out, giving a short bow, and murmuring a "thank-you" to the white haired teen. A trio of healing crystals would be rather useful, especially in a boss rush. Given that they were all still relatively low leveled, keeping their health high would be a priority for them all. She noted briefly that there were a few people that were getting Debuff crystals in tandem with said healing crystals, which had her interested. apparently some of them were being tasked as debuffers for the beginning of some of these.

When the others began to march forward, Violet wasted no time getting a move on, following the rest of them as they ascended onto the boat. the sky was much darker now, and gave the odd impression of something being rather wrong, though she simply brushed the feeling aside, thinking it was merely her imagination at this point. Violet's mood darkened upon the group catching sight of the first boss that they would need to kill in order to gather all of the rewards.. The large creature was wielding a massive pillar, and was eyeing the whole party with narrowed eyes, bloodlust radiating from it in waves. She gave her battle ready a quick once over, before crouching, readying herself to spring into action the instant their tank took action.

"We will be alright."

Violet smiled faintly at the encouragement that Andromeda was giving out, and pumped her fist. "This should be fun, ne?" she said, turning her focus back to the Boss, before springing into action, her feet moving swiftly across the deck as she shot at the monster. Her rapier glinted with a pale blue gleam, and as she moved right near the boss, the blade clasped within her hands cut through the bosses hide with little difficulty. Even though her damage was weaker than most, she still did a decent chunk for her first hit against the mob. She moved back, skidding back into a crouch. "Get a move on, people! We've totally got this in the bag!" she encouraged, grinning.

(Sorry for the long ass wait guys!)

Ozwald watched as the sky seemingly grew darker, and the ghostly ship the group had just boarded launched away from the dock. The ship was silent despite all the movement that was caused by the turbulent waves beneath the non corporeal ship. Ozwald couldn't shake a feeling of dread as they moved into the ship's depths, it seemed as if the boat would come crashing into pieces at any moment. Ozwald was not particularly high leveled, in fact he was the lowest level of the group, and he knew that he wouldn't be able to be much help to the group.

Ozwald didn't say much before the giant had walked down the steps into the hold that the group had congregated in, but he definitely didn't say anything after. The Jotun before them was massive, he wielded a pillar that was bigger around than three Ozwalds. The group had talked strategy before embarking on the ship, but all of that immediately left Ozwald's mind at the sight of the giant beast, how were they supposed to fight this? Ozwald completely missed what was supposed to be his attack, standing there wide eyed and frozen in fear, this was the scariest thing that he had ever faced.

–Had Andromeda already [Howled]?

Typically, tanks made some sort of ruckus to draw attention. Mishiro tried to find something that resembled said ruckus in their lead's silent figure, but the mesmerizing crimson of her cloak merely traced a hesitant circle around the edge of the action. She delayed her entry, waited for a cue she realized Andromeda wasn't about to give, then shattered the first of her debuff crystals at Mina's encouragement.

If the prism hadn't already disintegrated from the force of her throw, it was immediately crushed beneath the armored heel of her boot. Macabre strains fled from black shards as Mishiro broke past an invisible line drawn around the jötunn. Her fingers traced empty air in the space where a weapon would ordinarily have been held, and for an instant, the girl's snow-white frame was meaningless in the face of their towering opponent.

She felt the faintest sensation through the fabric of her gloves and her lips moved.

“███████–”

Her body was a mere vessel to the numbers.

The system covered for her where she would have staggered, and it was only in the split second before the first slash of [Ordinal Cleave] that the thunder violet glow of her battleaxe pierced through the mist that had been concealing it.
