[PP| FL 22 ] King of Fish

Recommended Posts

He had read somewhere that there was a quest with a giant fish. They had been on a fishing spree so he dug up a little information from the info broker. It was good information, but it looked more complicated than it was doing. He did like complicated since it meant more rewards. He figured it would be good for them to try or this reward. Haine was in town doing some gathering for him to create things on the road. He looked over at the rest of the information and paid for what he got.

“Thanks for the usual…” He walked away to the spot where they had agreed to meet her up. He was busy in lala land trying to figure out if this was worth it. Her fishing was phenomenal but it was also for the part that they may of needed to chase this creature down. He would talk to Haine about the information when they met up.

Their fishing spree had proven fruitful yet again. The bluenette was a keen angler, perhaps by a stroke of luck. Her favorite method of grinding had evolved into a skill in its own right, one of trained perception and timing. There was more that what met the eye when it came to the art, from everything to timing and sheer strength. She started with humble minnows and worked her way up to the top, her prized catch none other than the great Halibut. She'd taken a picture to commemorate the moment. Sometimes she wondered if her herculean strength was an extension of her skill or true abilities.

The woman gathered her belongings and set forth for the rendezvous point. A wide, open glade with a lake lied her next objective. She moved with haste lest she let the other grow irritable with impatience. She crushed a teleport crystal for the twenty-second floor.

The town was interesting enough. It was full of angler NPCs that seemed to advertise their catch of the day. He looked at the surrounding shops looking for something to potentially cook for the trio for dinner. A slight wrinkle of his nose was given as he looked at their catches. He knew she would be on their way. These fish were fresh indeed but he had to inspect the quality by the touch of their skin. A tilt of his head was given as he looked at the NPC. “This fish is overpriced. The quality of the fish is slightly lower than you priced and I hope I can make you go a little lower.” A slight smile was given on his face as he looked at the fisherman who seemed to be nervous.

He paid the man what he thought the price was but let a little room for negotiations. It wasn’t long before he placed the fish in his inventory but soon he would leave to go to the main crystal where Haine would meet him at. Amber orbs would look around as he watched people appear. When he spotted the bluenette, he smiled and waved at her knowing full well she would see him.

The town, as it turned out, was a fishing paradise. A city placed precariously over a body of water, stilts and wood holding it up. It reminded her of a nomadic village. She forwent her bulky garb in favor of something more breathable. She was not fond of fish water splashing on her coat which seemed to catch on everything. With a few swipes, Haine donned her garb sans the bulky coat. She didn't need the warmth nor the cosmetic flair for the task she would take on. As she rounded the corner to the bazaar, she noted the soft cub at her heels going berserk. It was ingrained in him. The scent of fresh marine life drove the polar bear to barge onto an unsuspecting vendor's cart and snatch a fish clean off the top. With a jubilant squeak, he devoured it like a monster. Haine scrunched her nose at the mess of bones and flesh made on the floor. Thankfully, she did not need to pick it up. The system had its own form of clean-up, the remnants crystalized away. She paid the stone faced NPC for the one fish stolen, plus another one for the road. Perhaps Pingu would appreciate a surprise.

Her detour corrected to the path by the main crystal. Wooden docks transitioned into solid ground. She stood at the rendezvous point, cozy in the shade with her beloved cub. A moment later, her favorite silver-haired man arrived. Pingu, ever faithful, waddled to remain in stride. She stuck her beak on Mishka's fur, inhaling the scent of fresh fish. As if she knew, she moved to Haine and nipped at her leg. "Y-Ouch!" the woman bit out, moving away. It took a moment to connect the dots. "Ahh, I see. I knew you'd be jealous, you." Haine chortled and tossed the second fish to the bird. She trilled back and moved behind Kiluia for safe guard, lest the bear try to steal her fish.

Haine rolled her eyes.

"Kids."

The overzealous penguin would peck at the woman despite her protest. When the fish was tossed, the penguin would waddle off with its catch to avoid disturbance of the cub. It knew when to retreat and make a getaway. He slowly turned to watch the group make their presence known to the other travelers. He often thought they should become a troupe and he should switch professions to becoming some sort of performer. Then again, he did like his own cooking. A slight sigh was given as he pecked the woman’s cheek “Sorry for the penguin.” He smiled slightly.

So this quest has a couple of… tasks we need to do. I figure we should knock out the annoying things so we can just get it done.” He would offer a light smile to her before sharing the quest. The quest had also the info broker information he had obtained so he could spare the remaining details of what each task was. She would have to do more work than he since she was the fisherman of the duo. Or fisherwoman to be correct.

Without another moment, he knew that the travel to the base of the mountain would take the longest out of everything. “Before we can do anything, we need to actually talk to the fisherman at the base of the mountain.” He pointed and began walking with her. It wasn’t too far but it would be far enough to kill some time. “Hurry, Pingu. I’m gonna leave you behind.” He threatened in a joking manner but also serious as he was leaving. “How was your day so far?” He asked his love.

"Don't worry about it," Haine added, with a wave of dismissal. Topic shifted to the focus of their rendezvous, yet another quest to mark off their list. "Oh yeah? Shoot." She cracked her knuckles and rocked on her heels. As she took in his information, her sight fixed on the quaint seaside settlement. It was a beautiful getaway, though not her taste for living arrangements. The scent of fish could drive these marine creatures wild, though it was repulsive to the woman. An old fashioned hut on stilts had its novelty for some, though she preferred something more... modern. Grounded on soil and secluded.

"Sounds like a plan. I didn't read all the details. Fill me in as we go, yeah?" She looped her arm with his and set off on the walk up the mountain. Luckily, a few teleport points would aid them on the trek up there. As they moved, idle chit chat filled the silence. "As good as it can get when you find cheap salmon per pound. I might have went... a liittle crazy." She chuckled, a bit of the guilt in her tone as she pinched her fingers. "First, we knock some of these quests out. Then, I'm thinking a nice salmon fry." Her mouth watered as she imagined a heaping plate of it in front of her. That was today's incentive to keep up the pace. Her footsteps quickened, urging the man attached to her arm to hurry up.

He side-glanced her as they moved on. His eyes squinted slightly as they headed toward the base of the mountain that was needed to proceed to the next stage. That part would be easy for the most part. Contact with the fisherman was already in progress. Breeze passed by caressing their skin as they made the trek across the terrain. It was as beautiful as he remembered it as they had been here not too long ago. The cabins were still for rent per usual, but he would have to take her here again.

“A little crazy? It does serve its purpose though…” He thought as he had taken a hiatus from the bakery for a bit. He would soon return and use those items to continue his merry way in making food once more. “Well, the details are pretty straight forward. But they kinda remind me when we had to get our familiar.” There was still trauma from him for doing those things that landed him not just a familiar but a child as well. “Once we flag the quest soon, we have to head over to catch a red salamander. We only have a limited amount of time to catch him before he disappears, and we start over again.” A light sigh escaped his lips.

“Then you come in with your amazing fishing skills so we can smash it into next year. Sound good?

The walk up the mountain was a slight bit laborious and therapeutic at the same time. A beautiful scenery distracted her from her aching calves. Idle chatter kept her occupied till they reached the base of the mountain. The cool air indicated the presence of a lake nearby. She sung a quick tune and swung Kiluia's arm with hers, a pep in her step. Her love's commentary raised memories of one particular endeavor. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Oh yeah, thaat," she commented, with a scrunch of her nose. "Ping, you were one bitch and a half to grab, lemme tell ya." She scratched the penguin's head. "Hopefully this one won't drag on so long." She turned her attention to Kiluia. "You're faster than me. You'll do a better job catching the salamander. Knock yourself out!" She pushed her locks behind her shoulder. She left the tedious part to him. She was a better fisher than looter.

At last, they arrived at the entrance of a small hut attached to a fishing dock. A man, appearing dejected, stared at the empty waters. "That the dude?" Haine called out, pointing a finger at his direction.

Eyes would glance over the fisherman and the area that was needed to fish out the monster. Their footsteps shuffled toward the fisherman’s hut and he cleared his throat. The NPC was clearly preoccupied with their daily routine. He found it strange that the area seemed more deserted than usual. At least they didn’t have many others to compete with. “I’ll do what I can.” He looked over to Haine before speaking to the NPC.

“Excuse me sir?” His voice was soft as to not cause the man distress. The man had deep coal eyes as he spoke to him. Can I assist you?” The rugged man’s voice was low and raspy. He clearly eyed them up and down with his one eye. It seemed the NPC had seen better days.

“Yes. The two of us would like to undertake the fishing quest. Dispatching the King of Fish.” He looked over at Haine. “Mind if undertake this quest?” The quest was immediately flagged as soon as he asked about it. His eyes flashed at the icon coming up and the acceptance was keyed in. “Pretty quick.” He noted as he stretched.

The old, seemingly senile man seemed to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. A slightly dejected expression and little words to share of his predicament. It didn't take long for her to click the pieces with the quest details. The lake was as dead as could be, nary a splash or ripple. It was a little unsettling to know there was something potentially significant waiting to chomp down. Fortunate of the man, Haine would assist with her fishing abilities. She clasped her hands together and listened as the other two conversated. In the distance, the ragtag, miniature duo waded in the murky waves. She kept a watchful eye on them lest they run astray. It was a lot easier to lose a teacup penguin than one would think.

"Me too!" Haine cut in, hand placed over her collarbone. "I'll take on it as well." A nod of confirmation and the man buffered but a moment, the life returning to him as his quest prompts loaded. She swiped her HUD for a brief rundown of the details as Kiluia sought the details.

The quest was everything that was described by the broker.  The fisherman had seen better days and was perfectly depicted by the games system. Every NPC had their own unique style and it showed in the detail. Eyes of amber wound glance over the downtrodden lake. It seemed it hadn’t seen business with the rampaging fish taking over the aqua life. “We will do what we can.” He spoke to him. The business concluded with him agreeing to the terms of the salamander. This was something he dreaded ever since this whole thing was discovered, but the quest had to be done.

He moved over to Haine and whispered in her ear. “Ready?” As she seemed spaced out looking at the lake. The forest wasn’t too far from the area as he moved to it. Once they would get there, the chase was on to find the salamander and then to catch the damn thing. He groaned slightly before looking back at her. “The memories frighten me.
