[Special Dungeon - PP] Valhaulin' Ass

Recommended Posts

Gotta love procrastination. Honestly, if Oscar had a nickel for every time that he left something until the last possible second, he would be richer than he already was. A simple swipe of his right hand summoned up his menu. From there, he navigated into his messenger interface and began typing.

Quote

To: @Freyd - The Whisper in Shadows, @Raidou, @Bahr, @NIGHT

Guys. I figgity-fucked up. I forgot about this whole-ass dungeon thing for Halloween. Any chance you guys could be the cavalry for your most intellectually-challenged friend?

And then he hit send. The regret was almost instant. Figgity-fucked up? Who the fuck talks like that? Whatever. They could revel in his foolishness later. If it got the dungeon cleared, he could deal with some light-hearted ribbing at his expense. He hit the door, a duet of hot dogs being shoved down his gullet and washed down with a potion. He was going balls-to-the-wall here. No Mitigation, full damage, fuck the consequences. From there he headed down to the Stygian River. Or was it up? Technically, it was on Floor 10. Regardless, he waited by the banks of the river as the Naglfar beckoned him so invitingly. A ship made from the toenails of the dead? Oscar had to find out who their interior decorator was.

Bahr: HP: 1570/1570 | EN: 169/169 | DMG: 23 | MIT: 79 | ACC: 5 | EVA: 6 | FLN: 12 | HLY: 6 | LD: 8 | HB: 24 | BH: 78 | PHASE

"Afraid this is all I've got," Bahr admitted as he approached the group, revealing the feeble buffs that he still had available after his recent rounds against the dungeons of the twenty second floor. "You could say that I... figgity-fucked up. Whatever that means. Anyways, it's all I was able to bring on such short notice. Anybody else got some buffs to fill in the blanks?"

He looked around, recognizing each and every face in the group. Some he had adventured with more than others, but it was a relief to see that those in attendance were among Aincrad's best. Even if he couldn't load up on every buff imaginable, their combined efforts would be more than enough to thwart the pathetic bosses present in this dungeon. Gimmicks could only get a mob so far.

"It's cool if not. I can make due." Surely he'd faced worse than this with less. He had, after all, preached to his friends about not filling up on a million buffs for every outing. Should he not practice what he preached?

It would be a miracle if NIGHT could remember what exactly had occurred during her previous dungeon runs. And as god's gift to mankind, this miracle was one of them bestowed upon the citizens of Aincrad.

Except for the last fight. For some reason, Cardinal had decided to cut that miracle short just by a hair. It was with minimal equipment that she sauntered over to the Stygian, once she'd noticed Raidou's presence being called upon once more for their expedition. Even though she was entirely certain he was one for extreme preparedness and for some reason had all the details on their party members (who traded away that intel? Couldn't have been the Tarot, could it?), it didn't hurt to request for his assistance before he'd made it to their meeting point.

To: Raidou
NIGHT: u got that incarc?
NIGHT: ill pay u if ur coming 2 styg
NIGHT: lmk

Awash in shadows, NIGHT nodded to Oscar when she'd spotted him and had he been looking in her direction. Now all that was left was to wait for the others.

"Third time's the charm, I guess?"  Freyd wandered out of the gloom along the banks of the Stygian river.  Every time he started this dungeon, it was as if a pall fell over his memory and he couldn't quite recall all the details of the previous run.  There was something about a creepy undead chick who was seriously into bondage, and some whacked out dog that had been sneaking scraps from Odin's table for wayyyy too long.

Reaching into some kind of void-like pocket beside him, he drew forth a well-grilled steak, still juicy and steaming, and flipped it towards Bahr.  For Oscar, he threw an immense pretzel instead.

"You won't need the MIT.  This one's all on the tank... if I recall.  The dog at the ends eats EVA tanks, but I'm sure we'll be fine.  Raidou will almost certainly come prepared with enough buffs to feed a battalion."  He shrugged, dismissing the hazy details that wouldn't quite gel at the edges of his mind.  He turned to Oscar with one last lingering question.

"Are we doing this a man short?  Or do you have someone extra hidden under your overcoat?"

A smile and a newfound value in his own abilities, compounded by a new blade that mirrored his intentions. A reformed black star coined for his predecessor he swelled and responds to Freyd "Something like that, here." He comments passing what he could muster to a couple of members. He could not shake a sense of nostalgia that was scratching in the back of his mind. A dejavu like he has been here before, but he shakes his head and peels frames to his eyes. Notably different then his usual brand, he was stretching his legs just a bit, attempting to devote fully into his role. Drawing the pillar fragment down the length of this sword, the light blue twists to a red. A test, for the upcoming raid was in order. A flutter of his robe, the man was just as typical anime as possible without realizing the irony in the slightest.

Bahr consumes Well-Done Steak (+2 Protein >>> +3 Protein with Filling House Buff)

Spoiler

Bahr: HP: 1570/1570 | EN: 169/169 | DMG: 26 | MIT: 34 | ACC: 5 | EVA: 6 | FLN: 12 | HLY: 6 | LD: 8 | HB: 24 | BH: 78 | PHASE

Quite possibly - no, definitely the lowest Bahr's damage mitigation had been in quite some time. There was a certain thrill to essentially being on the edge of death, knowing that a single successful hit from any of these juiced up mobs had the potential to knock him down more than a peg. But the anxiety, combined with trust in his party to hold aggro, made for a fun mix of anticipatory endorphins.

Bahr gave Freyd an appreciative nod as he consumed the steak in a single, dramatic gulp. After a few moments, he felt the power surge through him and bump up his damage just a smidgen more - enough that he felt confident he could keep up with the powerful youngsters in their midst.

"Think I'm good to go," he exhaled after successfully swallowing down the massive lump of meat that had gotten lodged in his throat. "Everyone else good to embark on our joy ride?"

Oscar didn't know why he would need an LD enhancement for a dungeon, but he wasn't about to argue with what was probably the best-looking giant pretzel he'd seen in, well, years. He quickly scarfed down the food item, pocketing the offered crystals. He'd never used anything that a Performer could produce before, but he was looking forward to seeing it in action. Once he'd completely consumed the pretzel, he summoned up a glass of water from his inventory to wash it down. Finally, with a contented sigh, he smashed the glass on the ground and faced the Naglfar. The vessel towered over them ominously, unearthly wails issuing forth from within the belly of the beast. It was more hammy than actually frightening though. "Could have done with a little mustard, but beggars can't be choosers. You guys ready to rock this dungeon out now?"

"No. I'm out. Good bye."

With the snap of her fingers, NIGHT's form dithered away from the ether -- but it should've been obvious that her presence was ever still there. As the Naglfar finally docked at the shores of the Stygian, a large boardwalk was extended to them, the bridge granting the players passage towards the dungeon's hold. They scuffled on, one after another; a bit of time would pass before the guardsmen would arrive to greet their newfound passengers. For now, all the party was to stand on was one (1) creepy metal boat.

Downright ominous. But NIGHT never had the chance to explore the deck, especially with some fortuitous timing on the system's part, an over eager welcome to the challengers that would face the Naglfar's might. Perhaps it was after the continuous beat downs the mighty had brought that the Jotuns' wills were eaten away bit by bit. Her gaze swept across the dozens of crates stacked upon each other, the crates littered around every nook and cranny.

It was surprisingly tidy. The player hummed, pleased with its design.

Concentrating on the white-limned void he somehow managed to wield, Freyd closed his eyes as if tapping into some distant memory and harnessing it to manifest around him.  The darkness within roiled for a moment and spectral wisps of black seeped through its holy seal, coiling into an ominous, spherical pall around his body.  His shadow seemed to recoil from it for a moment before settling back to its normal form.

"Yeah," he said in response to Oscar's ready-check.  "Let's go mess up the local friendly frost giant.  Just nuke the bastard.  He's easiest if we can take him out quickly."  Noticing the looks directed at him, he felt it necessary to explain.

"What?  Is it really that surprising to think I might have already done this?  I get around, y'know!"

Tensing the grip on his blade, Freyd scampered up onto the boat's main deck.  The action was about to start, and he was curious to see what a squad of Aincrad's best might do against its latest challenge.

A swell a tinge on the air, watching and waiting for things to take a turn for the worse. Everything was shored up and ready to move forward, the swordsman in red and a mass of others only met in passing. He knew them but only briefly, a face alone as was his usual. Bonds formed through a passage with words left unspoken. A flare of red peels from his frame, to those that were accustomed to the male it would not be unknown. But to the very same, something would feel off. A mix of blue amongst it twisting it from crimson to a tinge of violet. A different perspective is hidden in that fury. An insight changed upon ones fate, a glimmer in the rough that all may not be lost to the tides of tartarus. He was ready, but somewhere underneath it all he doubted his own mortality at the helm of this fight.

"Aite, let's go," Oscar said with finality. He took off into a sudden sprint, dashing into the ship with breakneck speed. He blitzed past NIGHT, obfuscated in shadow and ran straight up to the main deck. Tesseleth's Fury snapped into his hand as he rushed forward towards the absolute UNIT that was going through his game-scripted entry sequence.

"WELCOME MO-"

"SKIP!" Oscar exclaimed as he leapt from the deck and slammed his axe directly between Hrym's eyes. The Wrath of the Tyrant began to rumble, resonating through his axe. The power grew to a fever pitch, the weapon eventually unable to contain the raw fury of Tesseleth. A dark explosion ripped out from the point of impact, shaving a healthy chunk off of Hrym's health bar and blasting Oscar back towards the stairs that he'd just bounded up. He contorted himself in midair, trying to aim himself towards the opening like he was an Eight-Ball in the corner pocket. You've heard of Elf on the Shelf, but the world would soon know Oscar Soccer.

Oh, they were going now.

Wait a second - when had they gotten onto a boat?

Had Bahr sat on NIGHT again?

No, that was another timeline.

Regardless, Bahr wasn't about to let Oscar have all of the fun. Judging by the miasma of obsidian haze that had erupted from Oscar's strike, Bahr suspected the foolhardy magic ninja had managed to get a Fallen proc off. The luck! Well, Bahr knew a thing or two about luck as well.

It was no more than a matter of seconds after Oscar's black-death-super-edgy-explosion-of-darkness-and-stuff-attack that Bahr swooped with a blade gleaming scarlet, unleashing his own ultra-cool-skull-and-crossbones-inky-big-dick-damage-surprise and catapulting the mob's health gauge to a hair's breath above the yellow.

"Ayyyyyy look at all of that edge," the Kingslayer mused. "That's gotta be, like, nine hundred damage right there. Right on. Think we can kill it before the weirdos show up and crash the party? That'd be pretty cool, right? Guys?"

But they were all too busy trying to be equally cool.

(On the contrary. NIGHT was looking at crates. What a nerd.)

It was the sound of battle explosions and steel crashing into tough skin that the player turned her head back from the meshes to note their opponent -- finally! Aboard the ship, she could feel the vessel starting to move. Into a whirlpool, no doubt. The player already had enough of travelling through those.

She didn't even need to take action to note the drastic dip in health their opponent had within seconds. Was she even necessary to the plan? More importantly, did it matter how essential she was? One skip and a lunge over, the battle frenzy taking over her movements and she plunged Jack's Executioner straight into Hyrm's torso. It wasn't enough to bring it under, not by a long shot. But the chip at its health bar would soon be followed by another tick of venom should their foe appear to last for long.

It shouldn't. But there was no telling with system entities and damage numbers these days.

Freyd watched the rest of the team tear into the boss, who seemed both flabbergasted and dumbstruck as it still seemed desperate to finish its monologue.  Poor Hrym really did get the short end of the stick in this dungeon, though in this case they were striking with particularly abundant glee.  The edges of barely visible lips curled upwards as he watched the others decimate Hrym's health bar, each pulse of dark energy resonating in his own blade.  Why not add one more?

Racing to the left, Freyd slashed and cut loose the port mainstays grabbing hold as they sprung free from tension, yanking him high and fast into the air and then whirling him around to dive down upon the unsuspecting giant from behind.  His sword went clean through Hrym's back, protruding from abdomen on the forward side.  Adding to that the weight of the impact, it was enough to send him sprawling to his hands and knees and allowed Freyd to tumble ahead over top of him.  A terrible suction-like *pop* echoed around them as he drew back his sword with his passage before skidding to a stop beside Raidou.

"Your turn, boss-man."

Simplistic in their approach was a full party, let loose upon an entity that could do little in the way against them. A swell and an attempt to raise itself against the tides that were blazing to meet it. That swirl of red swelled and kindled drawing its ire in the form of imposed blindness. What was an eye seems to dilate and lose all semblance of focus. A narrow gateway of light that offered only Raidou's intense stare and frame through. Beneath the wake, the maelstrom of power imposed by the others of the group, reality slips away as they are erased from Hrym's world.

Seemingly possessed, blind to all but the man in red. A heavy pillar rises and descends, the impact heard in a scatter of sediment. But when the dust clears, the only purchase made was against a weapon. The Ebon Star, unwavering and untouched. A successful parry.

A team of five Players had just absolutely dumpstered the first boss of this dungeon. In response to this, Cardinal seemed to cycle through its Spotify playlist to some background music that captured the essence of what the Players had just done to Hrym. It was down to one final attack, but Oscar was currently sailing towards the bucket and not at all able to attack right now. So he did the only thing he could think to do.

"YEET," he exclaimed as he contorted his body to throw Tesseleth's Fury at the giant. The moment after his axe left his hand, Oscar crashed through the opening to the lower decks like a bat out of hell. "GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL," could be heard bellowing from below the decks as Oscar's axe buried itself once again in Hrym's face. An explosion of black fire engulfed the massive brute, bringing its health down to zero. Without a captain at the helm, the boat was sent flying though dimensions until it finally scuttled itself in a land of mist and fog. Oscar staggered out from below decks, surprised that a boat made of fingernails could survive such a heavy landing. "I think we can all agree that I was the MVP that fight. Two Fallen procs and I scored a goal." He brushed off the dust from his shoulder and collected his axe before diving over the side of the boat. They were on a roll and Oscar was intent on keeping that going.

Bahr barreled past Oscar as he gloated, bouncing to and fro to the beat of Space Jam - which had somehow worked its way into what was supposed to be a heinous quest against the most fearsome and grotesque creatures the castle had to offer. Did he care? Not in the slightest. He was on his way to beat the shit out of an old witch which had caused him so much pain in an alternate timeline that he somehow had a vague recollection of.

Wait, hadn't they rode a boat to get to it the last time?

Huh. Things weren't adding up all too well.

Too late - he'd already found the ghoulish mistress and slammed the pommel of Dawn's Demise into the bridge of her nose, sending her flocking into the darkness beyond. Now all that remained were her chained gimps, who also seemed to be bobbing their heads to Space Jam. How was that still playing?

Jailer of the Damned [Passive] - Hel begins the battle with three spectral soldiers - spirits that belong in Valhalla - chained up around her throne. So long as one soldier is bound, Hel will restore herself to full health upon reaching 50% or lower as a post action. Hel cannot be defeated so long as there are any bound soldiers.
To Valhalla - To free the soldiers, Players must distract Hel by forcing her to heal herself or by applying a disabling effect (stun, paralysis, freeze). Then, while distracted, they must roll a collective LD of 40 in order to free a soldier. After all soldiers are freed, Hel can no longer heal herself.

"Hey Ralph," he said, hastily approaching the nearest soldier a soon as Bahr had stunned the mistress of the underworld with his good looks, giving her a good look at his butt in the process.  After doing this three times, it was getting a little hard to keep taking the gruesome scene seriously.  He had hoped to stoke some semblance of the sheep dog and coyote routine, but got only a blank stare from the emaciated Viking warrior before him.  The shackles used to bind Hel's prisoners were nothing spectacular, but a few little tricks had garnered consistently better results: use of certain pin keys over others, twisting one way over the other, scraping some of the rust off on the nail shell gunnels of the ship, etc.

"Almost gotcha, bud.  Just hang in there a little longer and we'll get you all free."  Freyd worked the pin head loose from the lugs, but couldn't quite get it to clear.  The corrosion was just too deep.

No. No more boats. No more whirlpools. Nope. No.

If any amount of prior dungeon experience had told her anything about her position, it was that she was, with absolute certainty, on land of some sort. Whether it be dirt or sand beneath her feet, it was all muck at the end of the day, and NIGHT kicked off of the ground with a reeling headache, aiming to target the witch before them.

At least, she would've, if Bahr hadn't gotten to the figure first and sent Hel into submission. Instead, head shaken, her sights fell upon the squiggles in the backdrop. Were they human? The yellow cursors were indication enough for her to avoid them, and yet as Freyd approached one--

--Oh. So that's what their party had been doing the rounds before.

Now she was the one feeling like a dolt. Her gears shifted, penance building in her grip as Jack's Executioner stayed at the ready with a scatter of particles. She reached out with a hand towards the soldier her teammate was working on freeing.

Either it was her stats, or it was her embarrassment. With the grit she was hellbent on fronting, the chains shattered apart easily.

Onto the next.

"Well this is kinky," Oscar said. "Are we certain that the box rating was accurate? I don't much think kids need to be seeing a dominatrix and her three gimps." Good Christian values were something that Oscar only held close to his heart when it was convenient. When he needed to be outraged about something. And if the Christian Moms Against Video Games could see the scene that had unfolded before them, they would be apoplectic. They had to do something about this den of debauchery, boss fight be damned. It seemed, however, that saving the gimps from their unholy, torturous existence was part of the fight itself. Night freed one, his soul ascending towards the heavens now that it wasn't weighed down by the feminine wiles of Hel. Oscar made his way over to another of the soldiers and, with deft hands, undid the lion's share of the locks that bound him to this place. "Hold on, my brother. We will keep your virtue safe from this harlot."
