[PP-19] Oh, For Ki'Raion Out Loud! «Keep Calm and Ki'Raion»

Recommended Posts

An attack out of nowhere lances through the first warrior, piercing his chest from the rear and bursting forth through the sternum.  Such are the vagaries of an absent skeleton inside a digital mesh.  Darkness pulsed from the wound and the mob shattered into a hazy puff of shards, like a fragile shell or suddenly popped balloon.  A whipped plate caught the second on the helmet, ringing loudly within, to the discomfort of its occupant.  A foot stomp and pommel strike to the gut followed.  Where had this extra army come from to assail it so?!

Whirling into a high leap, Freyd spun to give his swing extra moment.  It was an impressive achievement under such a low ceiling, while carrying a long blade.  Raidou saw how.  It was parallel to his body, flipping out like a switchblade at the last minute and cleaving through their second captain to leave a deep, tangerine scar across his chest.  The Whisper landed, somehow balanced on two pots and a tipped tea cup, no part of him actually touching the floor.

"Guess that practice paid off."

Vengeful CD [2/3], Parry Refreshed

The second the one remaining captain turns to face Freyd, a blade runs through his chest. A hallow whisper "Not so fast." Raidou mutters with red distorting his own eyes in a reflection of the whispers, as that miasma pours off his shoulders and down the length of his steel. Auric sol whines for a moment before a spark scatters up and down from its point. The trapped soldier twist and jerks, his system being racked by the dormant charge. Sizzle and smoke play off his carcass, alive but barely as he slinks off the blade. Running his left hand down the length of the weapon, it seemed that speed was a factor in its trigger. Charge and sprint, the catalyst to which it triggered. Like a form of static, it seemed to draw directly in his change of pace. If this were the truth, perhaps the secret of the latent energy left on his steel or his muscle fiber may have been just sussed out.

A clean lateral slice was all it took to finish the final foe.  Or was it?  That tunnel led somewhere, and things hadn't been nearly as difficult as he had expected.  A quick connection of eyes with the Wanderer was all that was needed to confirm: he was thinking the same thing.

"These are just mooks.  Tough mooks, even for this floor, but nowhere near tough enough for a dungeon.  At least, that's what I've heard."  Freyd had only just realized that this was his first foray into this particular mechanic and that he'd been relying strictly on second-hand information.  "Nothing like a little hands-on experience, right?  Let's go see what we're dealing with."

The tunnel was disappointingly short, leading to a stair that wound down to another level almost directly below the first.  There were no branches or other rooms, save whatever lay beyond the heavy wood door they now faced.  The crest of the Crimson Lily wreathed that of the Sundered Spire, suggesting that they might finally have found something of worth.

"Whatever is behind that door is likely as fanatical as all the others.  I doubt we'll get them to surrender, but a captive might be of benefit.  We should also be wary of the potential for respawning.  Three times seems to be their practical limit, from what I've seen.  If we're lucky, they will have already used up their other strikes.  The Lily keeps control over her minions by making them think they're invincible, but if that's the case, why would this one be hiding down here?"

Vengeful refreshed

In silence, Raidou holds fast at Freyd's side. Adjusting the lenses on his nose as they pass further and deeper into the winding chiseled pathways in low torchlight. It was expected to be much larger, its existence may have only been over a short period. A press of the lenses on his nose as he walked, the ire that parades off him ever-present. "Strange, I doubt they knew we were coming given the lack of forces. Speaks leagues to their information network, or O&I's ability to keep things under wraps."

Raidou activates Parry, Parry CD [0/2], -5 EN

"Perhaps it's less for hiding but remaining out of plain view. I wonder if what you faced and destroyed they aim to rebuild. It would make sense, and perhaps they seek a way to restore Skalaugh. But it matters little, the plans of these stricken figments. We will burn it down, and collect what we need in the remains. As penance for what they did to the ground above. For what they did to coral, and during the one event where people could relax for once. Let's see how invincible they really are, and how impossible they are to overcome. A shame there is no audience to break the will of."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, but our efforts have been more focused on information gathering than any real or effective suppression.  I'd have loosed Haine's team on them if we actually had any meaningful threats.  This is the first resistance of any substance I've encountered from the Spire in some time.  Something definitely feels a bit off here."

The door swung open without so much as a squeak.  Before them was an improvised shrine of some sort, in a square room roughly thirty feet to a side.  A small sanctuary stood in the centre, surrounded on four sides by rough-hewn stone columns that helped to support the vaulted ceiling.  Sitting on a small dais in the sanctuary was a ruby-red crystal identical to those Skalaugh had used in his assault.

"Blood crystal." Freyd spat.  "Figures."

But this one was dark, and the heavily armor champion on the left side of the dais was clearly unappreciative of that fact or of their interruptions in her efforts to revive it.

"You!" She raged, recognizing Freyd as he entered.  "Always interrupting and disrupting EVERYTHING!"

"Wait.  I know that voice.  Haven't I killed you someplace before?"

That seemed to do the trick.  Milliseconds later, swords were clattering loudly against each other, including a hefty weighting of female cursing and a smashing of armor as it crumped against the far wall.

Vengeful Riposte Refreshed!

"Noted, I agree. There is some hidden motive here." his answer was just as short as usual. A loosely cobbled together cathedral beneath the very ground they walked. The whisper found an old friend and within seconds she was painted against the far wall. Wandering into the chamber while Freyd was giving the digital construct hell in the far side, his hatred bleeding throughout the place in thick fog as he eyed the large gem upon its pedestal. "Well now, perhaps we take this away." removing his blade up and with a horrified shout "Don't you dare!" as the broadsword brightens. A crash and crack sends fragments of the centerpiece to all sides, the champion was for good reason quite pissed. "Did I break your toy? It won't be helping you now will it?" he smiles in almost a sinister fashion, as the white in her eyes through grit teeth begins to expand and claim her retina.

Freyd shook his head at the mob's sloppy tactical awareness.  She had been equally blinded by rage in their last encounter, and it had cost her then too.  An extended foot was all it took to snare hers as she reacted with obvious intent.  The armored warrior teetered on the fulcrum and slammed down face-first into the very same altar Raidou had just used to provoke her.

A glance at the his fellow captain was enough to communicate his thoughts.  She was a fanatic.  They'd get nothing useful from her, not matter what they tried.  He already had.  Planting a booted foot on her back, he placed his blade at the nape of her neck, ready to deal a killing blow. She whirled quickly, and suddenly enough to send his strike off the mark, but still leave a nasty gash on her furious face.

"That's right.  You were a strong one.  Such a shame that you're still as obstinate as the last time we met."  Mercy would be wasted on this one.

Still furious as she fought against her own growing blindness, the chamber becoming more and more riddled with the red wanderers miasma. Freyd goads her and in response she raises a heavy hammer and shield with the intention to strike. Although the whisper would be more than fine against her advance, Raidou blindsides her with enough force to cleave the shield from her grasp in an exploitation of an opening. The impact connects at an angle, sending the would be spire soldier in a spiral that ends as her back causes one of the four pillars to bend and shift. She exhales sharply before falling to her knees, a bit of dribble exiting with a nice side gash on her left. "Your outnumbered, and your outmatched by just one of us. Your a fool if you think you can stand against the tide. Accept what comes next with dignity." The nomad speaks intentionally, a draw of attention.

"Well said Rai-"

*SLIP*

*CRASH*

"Ooof!"

Meaning to deal their foe another blow, Freyd had lost track of her shield which ended up underfoot.  It flew out as he stepped on the unsuspecting metal plate, slamming his back into the ground with enough force to expel the breath from his body.  He turned a shade of matching crimson to her armor before a massive suction refilled his false lungs and sent him into a coughing fit worthy of an apoplectic seizure.

*COUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGH*

"Dangit... we were on such a good ro-"

*CLANG*

The Whisper barely blocked her sword thrust aimed for the middle of his face, deflecting it into another nearby column that shivered uncomfortably under the weight of the blow.

"Hey!  Not nice!"  Freyd eyed the waning structural integrity of the shrine.  One more good hit could bury them, and he had to keep her from figuring that out.  She seemed very much the type to try and take them out along with herself.

A precariously placed shield draws the nomad's companion's footing away, knocking him down but not out. The captain aims to make due on him but does nothing more then meet steel. She was blinded, but not entirely in part to Raidou's hatred no. It was obvious to the nomad that there was some motive to the whispers madness, and an active deductive on the chamber brings back nothing relevant. What was it that Freyd had seen that he did not? A jerk forward in moments after her weapon latches and is halted beneath her, Raidou drops the blade through and clips to one side. A spray in red and a flurry as he rips it back clean along her back. One single solid grasp, causes the leader to pause. Her free hand reaches for Raidou's own, digging away at the fingers now wrapped around her throat. "Did you forget that there was more than one? how foolish to turn your back on an enemy."

Rolling wide to get away from the crimson knight's reach, Freyd sensed opportunity even before seeing her pull and jerk at her throat.  Scanning the plates of her armor, he found what he needed: a crease concealed by a bit of decorative cloth.  It was a clever embellishment that served a practical purpose, but to a practiced eye, it was a tempting mark of weakness.

The black blade thrust, peeling forth the fine white seal that kept it contained.  It felt like wielding a black hole that needed to draw breath every once in a while.  Then there was also the hunger that came with it.  The knight cursed, teetered and slumped to one knee, slashing wildly in his direction.  The wound was dealt.  Better to withdrawn and seek another opening.

A glance was spared for his companion, who'd been using that strange familiar more frequently of late.  There was something unsavory about the thing.  His blade merely sought to fulfill its purpose: to make void that which was.  It married itself well to the goals of its master.

'What were the goop's intentions,' he wondered, if only to himself?

A twist of her neck to look toward the nomad, wiggling rather aggressively in a grip she couldn't break. A weapon in her grasp clatters to the floor as another wound causes her weakness, a bit of twisting decay playing in the white of her eye like smoke in a cloud. Freyd had landed something rather lethal. She aims to break the nomads grasp with both hands, and as a rebuttal his arm swells. Blackened cables bleed down the line and across his wrist, creating a network of bondage as it retracts and recoils. "Your not getting away, try as you will. Nearly 100 couldn't get through my grasp what made you think you could?" Raidou remarks rather plainly, simply stating a fact by the sounds of it. A nerve struck as the hand that held her still suddenly becomes like a noose, and with it the chorus of gasping as if this thing had to breath.

The words echoes in the back of the Whisper's mind, drummed out of the miasmic haze of memory by the similarities to their situation.

"Duck season!"

"Rabbit season!"

"DUCK SEASON!!"

"DUCK SEASON!!! FIRE!"

Daffy never learned, and neither did this chick.  Battered back and forth between he and Raidou, she had barely managed to stand, let along put up any semblance of what might suitably be called resistance.  So sad.  Plus, no crystals were left to fuel her festering feud for retribution.  This was going to be goodbye.  Freyd wouldn't miss her.  She was a zealot blinded by hate and beyond the reach of reason.  This was a mercy.

Samael's Pride blazed white.  "I guess it agrees?" he mentioned quietly, muttering for his own benefit.  Her helm detached from her body, eyes wide at the realization of what was transpiring.  He locked his gaze with hers, watching her visage fracture and burst into myriad shards of detail-free light.  Just like that, she was gone.

"Disappointing."

"Indeed, I would have expected much more strength from a member of the spire. But perhaps not every one of their recruits are a Skalaugh. An unfair comparison." Raidou comments sheathing his blade behind his right shoulder and fixing the lenses on his nose. Kneeling low and picking up one of tiny fragments of red that remained from the detonation of her coveted stone. "I do not believe its operational any more, but It would not hurt to maintain on guard." Raidou quipped as twisted the fractal over in his palm. If he had some sort of divination now his wishes would force it to trigger. He'd wish this small little piece would lead him to her, The Crimson Lily. If there was any head he wanted, for endangering everyone he held dear it was her. Not typically a man of a grudges, she had earned hers with one failed attempt at the city of Coral.

"Interesting how she seemed to believe that it could be recharged.  That said, reasoning never seemed to be her strong suit."  Freyd rolled another shard over in his hands, tossing it into his inventory for later consideration.  "As much of a nut as she was, if she'd really meant us harm, these would have been the way to go."  Following his gaze, Raidou quickly surmised that he meant the battered columns.  "Another good blow or two might have brought the entire chamber down and buried us here.  I never even bothered to check whether a teleportation crystal would work within these confines.  Hrm."  Self-assessment was an inevitable part of the aftermath of any mission.  This one had turned out far differently than he had expected, but not without its benefits.

"I've been meaning to use up this stash of maps.  Let me know if they could be of benefit to you.  We might as well share their benefits."

Placing the tiny shard into his inventory, a sample to check its composition if he was able. "Thankfully either she was too dumb to notice or she thought she didn't need it." he quipped looking about the chamber after inspecting the structure. He was looking for something, anything that would lead to another piece of parchment. "Curious, it would not be the first time." he admits to the thought as he shifts across some of her affairs. Mostly heretical barking and worship, with little grounds in reality. "Fanatic's" Raidou remarks to the low light room with a forced trigger of detection to look for anything that awaits in the darkness. He was unsure if there were any more goons that may have overheard them and would not wish to take that risk. "Gladly, an excellent opportunity." The nomad spoke as the sonar like pulse bled out from his position, the very thought of building both parties strength before the respective lingering fight was ideal.

"I've been meaning to finish off the dragon hunting quest chain, jumping back and forth between that and scouring our backyard for lingering Spire agents." A few jabs at digital images hovering in the dimly lit, dusty air confirmed the presence of thirteen more sites in close proximity.  "It begs the question: if I hadn't found these maps, would the Spire's forces have been wiped out?  Do they only hide because my searching somehow spawned their existence?  What a weird, bloody world."  He closed his inventory again, sparing a few words to coordinate timing and options with his fellow captain.  The logistics were simple enough: meet, buff, purge with impunity.  Then simple lather, rinse and repeat.  This was now the nature of their existence.  It made him grimace to thing that, mere months ago, he was cowering in the back alleys of the Town of Beginnings.

What a fool he had been.

Placing down one of the worthless pieces of parchment, not wanting to clutter his own works with a bunch of unintelligible garbage. "That's what they claim, is that it's the players that are bringing them to production. Curious that for something gaining cognition they are very short sighted. If not us then it would be another player, we are just the first to enter the cycle. These spire spawns fail to realize that it is the very nature of their construction for us to oppose. They are our deliberate obstacle and instead of being wise to the fact they choose to hate the opposing color on the board instead of the ones moving the pieces. A strange thing that." he quipped for a moment activating one more pulse for good measure of detection. "If they had enough intelligence to question this instead of misguidingly lashing out, they would be our allies. Strange indeed."

"I've had that conversation.  Some mobs who... suffer... from this effect are more akin to neutral NPCs.  Many of the Lily's most devoted servants are simple mobs who have been fed a line that they have been deprived of something by players.  Their memory retention has come to be viewed, through deliberate misrepresentation, as some kind of curse in that their deaths equate to pain inflicted and re-inflicted ad infinitum.  Consider Christian notions of eternal damnation and torment, and you have a strong equivalent.  People change their behaviour just to avoid the prospect!  Imagine the power you can wield when you convince enough believers, with the catch that anyone who ever fails to retain their memories, and therefore cannot gainsay you."

Freyd seemed genuinely impressed by the Machiavellian level of intrigue involved.

"It's genius, of an utterly sinister mien.  Anyone willing and capable of this level of willful manipulation must be exposed. And you're right - were it possible to harness this against Kayaba, it would be a truly formidable weapon.  The thought had not escaped me.  Unfortunately, the reality seems far less potent than the myth.  While some unique mobs seem to have gained significant longevity from this effect, most never recall past more than three times.  My concern is that, as we kill more and more mobs, the effect will spread, and the number of effective retention loops will increase."

"I'll gladly run those with you, swat down the opposition before they can mount against the player base enmass. Although a bit of pity breeds for these constructs... I suffer to believe them capable of any thought beyond that of a toddler." An open of the book in his grasp and adding a few words in regards to Ki'Raion to the page, a diagnostic of what the beast was not capable of. It was a bit difficult getting a more accurate reading given how large of numbers the pair were producing but at the very least it was a ballpark range and estimation. "Then my moniker Fanatics fit, I trust your judgment on how they act and perceive. I've only dealt with but a handful of them and mostly, they were more monstrous than human." Raidou recalled the apes and Skalaugh. "The fact is, we want the head, not the clutter that gets in the way. No better way to find it, then do what we do best."

Raidou corrects his lenses that cause what dim lighting here to twist and reflect.

"And that's blaze a path to everything they have and reduce it to rubble."
