[SP-F4] O' Unholy Night <<The Night's King>>

<<The Night's King>>

The Holidays had always been a special time to Jomei in the real world, even after his parents separated. There was something about the lights, sounds, and overall feelings of joy and giving that put the ginger in the Holiday season. Even stuck in Aincrad, he made the best of it. He had been lucky enough to find someone to celebrate Christmas with for the past couple of years. Though, it did bring him a bit of sadness to think that he would not be spending it with his friends as well, as they had in the past. Their first Christmas together, the couple had put together a small Holiday get-together with other members of The Holy Dragon alliance. Now, he didn't even know the whereabouts of most of its members, especially without the unification of a guild to bring them together.

However, that would not stop Jomei from celebrating the holidays with Telrenya. Even though they had not planned to do much this year, with their constant planning for their own wedding, Jomei still wanted to do something to surprise the woman he loved.

Of course, being it was the season, many of the general stores on every store sold various decorations, outfits, and other trinkets to deck one's halls for the Christmas season. One could even purchase trees of various sizes, and with their virtual inventories, bringing them back home was a simple effort. As all good and well that was, Jomei wanted to do something a bit more special and traditional. He remembered Christmas when he was a young lad, their family all together. A yearly tradition would be to pick out their own tree and cut it down. A symbol of their own hard work, and a staple family tradition. However, it had been years since they had done that, his mother and Jomei usually just pulling out the yearly fake tree. Jomei was determined to bring that tradition back, at least, the best he could with Cardinal's restrictions. Many objects, trees included, were considered immortal objects, and would simply display an error message if players were to strike them with an attack. Word on the street, however, was that there was a grove of trees on the Fourth Floor that, for a short while, players could cut down and display in their homes.

So there he was traveling from Snowfrost on the Fourth Floor, the snow under his boots crunching with each step. His signature green cloak sat on his shoulders over his long coat and light armor. The <Survival> skill he had picked up on a quest through the desert on Floor Five helped his body from freezing over, but with winter season, he still found himself fighting the biting, cold air. His arms crossed about his chest, gripping the sides of his cloak and pulling it more taut against his shoulders to keep some of the warmth in. He hated to admit it, but his journey to find a suitable Christmas tree was all based on rumor and high hopes. For all he knew, it was just a story made up by some bullies to trick excitable players into trekking far from Snowfrost and into the freezing blizzards. Jomei, on the other hand, knew at his level, he would be able to handle anything thrown at him. So on he went through the snow, hoping for some sort of sign or direction.

"Whew.. How're you holding up Adere?" Jomei said to the owl on his shoulder. Half of her head was retracted into the green scarf that wrapped around her shoulders and her size nearly doubled as she puffed out her feathers. With a slight turn of her head towards her human companion, she shot Jomei a look of slight discomfort. "Yeah.. I'm with you there. Sorry, I didn't expect.. this grove to be out this far. Unless its not." he sniffled, the cold causing his nose to start running, "It could have been just on the other side of Snowfrost for all we know."

Adere didn't seem to take too kindly to that possibly realization. Extending her wings, nearly smacking Jomei in the face, the owl took flight just above his head. "Where are you going?" he shouted to her, as the wind picked up under her flapping wings, and she pushed on ahead of him. He hoped she was going to scout ahead, find any sort of sign posts or NPCs that could guide him in the right direction. Picking up his pace, the best he could in a foot of snow at least, Jomei trudged through the sheet of mostly undisturbed snow.

It was not long before the sight of the brown owl against the white snowfall came into his view once again as she flew towards him. That was fast, he thought to himself as his familiar perched on his shoulder yet again. "Did you find something?" he said to his shoulder, as the owl pointed her head forward in the direction they were heading. "I knew I could count on you." the ginger said with a smile as he continued forward. Straining his eyes to get a better look through the haze of the storm, Jomei caught a glimpse of a light source, a couple of lights to be more exact. Jomei had stumbled upon a building of some sort, a lantern hanging outside under a hanging sign to help guide wandering souls in its direction. Warm light flickered through the frost covered windows, more lanterns hanging inside perhaps, or a fireplace. The smoke that poured from a chimney atop the snow topped roof said it was the later. The sign hanging beside the door read, The Long Barrow. "Looks like its a tavern.. why don't we check it out. Warm up for a bit before heading back out." Adere definitely was not one to disagree with the promise of warmth and food. So taking the door knob in his hands, Jomei entered the facility.

The warm interior welcome Jomei as he stepped foot inside, quickly cutting off the cold winds that blew in by shutting the door. Four logs, still covered in bark, stood tall near the four corners of the tavern, serving as support beams. Various trophies signifying a successful hunt scattered about the interior; mounted heads and bone on the walls, leather hides stretched around the standing logs, and fur pelts laid across the benches at tables to provide a bit of extra warmth. It made sense that any sort of tavern out this far in the wilderness would be some sort of a hunting lodge. Despite not being on the hunt for any animal or creature, and rather a simple Christmas tree, Jomei decided the warmth of the interior out weighed the stares of some of the grizzled patrons.

From a first glance about the various tables, Jomei was unsure of the player to NPC ratio. They all were dressed to the teeth in furs and leathers meant to combat the cold, with weapons at their side meant for the hunt. Jomei, dressed in greens with a thin blade at his hip, didn't exactly fit the part.

Running a finger across the bottom of his nostrils, and taking in another sharp breath, Jomei pushed forward through the tavern to the long, oak bar on the opposite end of the building. Most of the other patrons had returned to their own devices- continuing conversations or going back to their drinks and meals. Rubbing the palms of his hands together to warm them up, the ginger took some seat at an unoccupied stool. "You look cold." a voice from a few seats over, said in Jomei's direction. Jomei turned to look at the source, busy eyebrows and large, rosy cheeks obscured most of his beady eyes, but Jomei could see he was looking in his direction. The lower half of his face covered in hair that came down to form a thick beard. "Yeah.. its like it never stops snowing out there." Jomei joked back to the man, who laughed in response to his sarcastic comment.

The stranger took an empty glass from the opposite end of the bar, and poured a dark liquid from the personal bottle he had tapped into. The glass scraped against the worn, wooden surface, some of the contents sloshing over the brim of the glass before Jomei caught it where he sat, "Something to warm your belly, and your spirit." The contents smelled strong, not necessarily pleasant, but would definitely get the job done. If alcohol would had any negative effects on them in SAO, this would probably put him on his ass after a glass or two.

Jomei's ancestors would frown on him if he were to turn down a free drink, however, so the man hesitantly took a sip. What tasted like a bad, but still strong as hell, whiskey warmed his throat as it went down. The taste, definitely not as bad as it smelled, but Jomei's face definitely scrunched up a bit as he took that first drink. The man laughed again, "Some more of that'll do the trick."

"Thanks." Jomei offered with a gruntled response. Thankful for the drink, not thankful for the taste. Turning forward in his seat, Jomei took in a deep breath of the stale, yet warm, air. Beside him, he heard the sound of a chair scraping against the floor, a few heavy footsteps, and then the chair beside him being pulled out. The smell of that alcohol sure was a lot heavier.. now that the stranger sat right next to him. Slowly, Jomei's head turned to face him, offering a friendly nod and pursed-lip smile. The man took a few moments of sitting beside Jomei before speaking again, "You know.. you look strong. Not like some of the hunters of the lodge.Like you can hold your own against something more dangerous."

This conversation was definitely taking a more interesting turn. Without spinning in his seat, Jomei's head turned in the man's direction, curious about the point he was getting at. The man's demeanor shifted, and after another long sip of his drink, he continued. "Theres rumors going around of some undead king out there, lives in a fortress made of stone and ice built into the tallest mountain." Leaning in closer, the alcohol on his breath causing the hair on the back of Jomei's neck to stand. He could probably get drunk off of the fumes itself. The stranger's beady eyes shifted back and forth before carrying on, "I can tell ya, its not a rumor. Its true. Bastard took my wife a few years back. I'd go get him myself but.. I'm not the fittest to fight. If you can go take him out for me, I'll make it worth your while."

Jomei pondered on the drunkard's request for a moment, wondering what he could offer him. He had originally set out to find a tree for Christmas.. but he didn't have it in him to turn the quest down. Especially one on this floor, he should be able to handle on his own. "Alright, I'll go take out this undead king for you. If you can help me find a tree to cut down for the holiday."  Jomei swore the eyes hidden under those bushy brows twinkled as he heard Jomei accept his quest. "Hell, you do this for me, I'll chop the tree down myself."

So back out into the snow Jomei went, leaving the rest of the whiskey the stranger had poured for him on the table for him to finish. Hopefully he did not take that as a rude gesture.. Jomei had just lost his taste for alcohols that strong, especially if it wasn't doing the job it was supposed to do. However, the short stay within The Long Barrow was enough to give the ginger a second wind to push forward, though now was a clearer destination in mind. The tallest mountain on the floor was not tough to spot, even through the constant snowfall. Luckily enough, the base of said mountain was also within close proximity to the Long Barrow. Jomei was thankful for that, at least, though the trek up the mountain would take quite awhile.

The significant drop in temperature as Jomei began to follow to path carved into the side of the mountain was nearly enough to send him right back home to the warmth of his home on Floor Eleven. The powerful winds caused the long coat and cloak to whip behind him, as he gripped onto the collar of the later to keep it from detaching and being carried away.

To his dismay, the trail eventually came to an abrupt end, with no farther indication on how he was to proceed up the mountain side. "You've gotta be kidding me..." Jomei said to himself, his eyes scaling up the icy surface towards the peak which poked through the clouds. However, as luck would have it, where the path did not continue up the outside of the mountain, a large fracture in the ice and stone offered a possible way inside. "Hm.. he did say the fortress was built on the outside of the mountain.." Jomei pondered, before stepping up to the fissure.

The crack was tall, but not that wide; possibly two feet apart at the most. Taking in a deep inhale, the cold air sat in his chest, stinging at this lungs. Jomei slipped into the crack, his back pressing against the stone surface. He moved forward by shuffling his feet, picking himself up over some of the jagged rocks that jutted up from the ground. After a few minutes of shimmying through the fissure in the mountain's surface, Jomei found himself within the mountain. Light was almost completely cut off from the outside, save for the slivers that shone through the crack he had moved through. However, he found a majority of the far side of the interior was illuminated by braziers emitting an icy, blue flame.

The white flames flickered, blue cinders falling around the stone braziers that burned endlessly. The light given off illuminated the icy, white walls and a staircase between the two.The path led to an entryway that stood at least ten feet tall, four pillars holding up an even higher part of the structure. The remaining fortress laid hidden behind the wall of ice and stone ahead of him. The interior of the cavern was just as cold as the exterior, and the raging flames seemed to burn without emitting heat. "Guess this is the place.." Jomei said through shivered breaths that formed a cloud before him as he spoke.

As the ginger's boot pressed into the first of the dozen steps before him, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the interior. A humanoid form, its pale skin pulled tight against its bones cracked in places like ice. Protrusions reminiscent of jagged ice stuck out from its body like a form of armor. Red eyes stared down at the ginger, its mouth parted, revealing rows of jagged teeth, an inhuman growl coming from within itself.

Jomei found himself pulling his rapier from its scabbard as the form produced two hand axes. It took one step before letting out a deafening screech and rushing towards the intruder.

The strange creature sped down the stairs towards Jomei, its undead, icy form able to quickly cross the ice with ease. The ginger took in a quick breath through his nostrils, slowly expelling it through his parted lips. He waited for his chance, for the wight to be within range of one swift strike. Once half the distance had been closed, Jomei ran forward to meet the creature. The steps were slick, and it made charging up them rather difficult, but Jomei was able to manage. Now within range of each other, the wight struck first with a wide swing towards Jomei's head. The toe of Jomei's boot hit the vertical part of the next step, which he used as a base to stop his rush forward. His body tilted to the side, and the wight's axe swiped through the air just above Jomei's lowered head.

Quickly popping back up, Jomei pivoted on his back foot and delivered a roundhouse kick into the wight's leg, knocking it off balance and causing it to nearly topple down the stairs. Jomei took this moment as an opportunity to strike the creature with his blade. With a few quick strikes, the remains of the fallen foe tumbled down the stairs in the form of data fragments.

".. I take it that wasn't our target." Jomei said to the owl who hovered just above his shoulder. The sound of footsteps behind him caused him to start and give a half turn. Another three of those creatures stood at the top of the stairs, each sporting a different weapon of choice; one with a great axe, one with a long sword, and a third with a war hammer. The ginger looked down at where the previous wight once stood before looking back up to its three brethren. ".. I take it your'e not willing to negotiate.."

Each of the three readied their weapons, the one with the long sword pointing the tip down at the player. The two wights then rushed into action, letting out the same, shrill scream and echoed off the icy interior. "I'll.. take that as a no." Jomei said with a flourish of his blade, readying it for yet another bout. The wight with the longsword followed just after the other two. It was times like these Jomei wished he had an area attack like all of his other friends did. Looked like he would just have to take them out one at a time while playing the dodging game as usual.

He didn't have enough time to prep his <Charge> skill again before the three wights were on top of him. He hoped that the bit of evasion that he had sacrificed for this new build would be enough to keep him alive. The wight with the war hammer stepped just past Jomei, while the one with the great axe stopped just before him. A swing of the war hammer flew through the air towards Jomei's hip, while the great axe was lifted up into the air over the wight's head.

Jack's Rapier moved quickly, slipping in just over the handle of the war hammer to allow him to gain control over its trajectory with a parrying move. A flick of his wrist and a shove to the side, the hammer swung just past Jomei's leg. The ginger used the momentum of the parry to spin and catch the great axe over his head. With his palm near the tip of his blade, Jomei tried to hold the great axe strike back. However, the powerful weapon took him down to a knee. Jomei struggled for a moment before pushing upwards with all of his might, causing the wight to stagger for just a moment. His rapier moved even faster than Jomei did, cutting a triangle into the wight's torso. The creature let out its last breath before falling backwards off of the stairs.

The third wight with the long sword swung sideways at Jomei's back. Jomei responded with a quick orbit around his head, blocking the blade behind the back with his own.

One down, Jomei thought to himself as he looked over his shoulder to block the attack from the wight with the long sword. The creature's toothy maw opened, its breath creating a cloud before it, smelling of decay and death. It pulled its sword back for a secondary attack, which Jomei thought he could use as an opportunity to quickly strike and end it. From his flank, the war hammer of the other wight came down hard, crashing into Jomei's shoulder. The shock rang through the ginger as if he were a bell, the strike itself causing his left arm to go numb for a moment.

Jomei retaliated with multiple, lightning fast strikes to the wight's upper chest, appearing as one strike with multiple golden spears crashing into its body in rapid succession. The head of the creature separated with no gore, erupting into a rain of pixels before the head would tumble down the stairs. Another numbing sensation was sent through Jomei's body as the final wight's blade cut diagonally across the ginger's back, leaving a deep gash of red light.

"Gah!" Jomei grunted as he staggered down a few steps away from the undead ice creature. It extended its arms, releasing a hissing growl as it taunted the ginger. "Lucky shot. Last one you'll ever get." Jomei said as he turned towards the wight, already feeling his natural healing seal up the wound and remove the numbing from his shoulder.

Jomei shot forward, his rapier clashing with the wight's longsword. The sparks of metal against metal further illuminated the staircase they fought on, Jomei's powerful stabs causing the wight to take retreating steps up the stairs. The Emerald Duelist was relentless with his attack, moving just fast enough so the wight struggled to react on time. As Jomei finally activated his sword art, the thrusts became more rapid, continuously pushing his enemy up the stairs until they stood on the landing before the entryway. One strike caused the wight's blade to snap in two, and a final pierced through the center of the wight's forehead.

The lifeless creature erupted in a rain of data fragments, Jomei's last obstacle before proceeding into the Night King's lair.

The fortress was smaller than Jomei had expected, as the chamber through the entryway at the top of the stairs seemed to be a single, long hallway that opened up into a larger chamber at the end. Holding his rapier at the side, and at the ready, Jomei continued forth through the corridor. The interior seemed to hold remnants of a previous legion, before time and ice claimed it as its own. A mostly ruined, navy blue rug with gold trimmings created the path that Jomei walked to the proceeding room. Sconces with the same, icy flames burned every six feet or so, large icicles protruded from the ceiling like stalactites. The farther Jomei progressed, the colder the air got. Even <Survival> did nothing to fight off the freezing temperatures. Jomei could not help the uncontrollable shivering that kicked in to keep his body warm, yet his body still felt the lasting effects of the cold. "T-This may b-be.. tough to f-f-fight in.." Jomei said to Adere, who seemed to shake and shiver just as much as Jomei was.

Finally, the corridor opened up into the following chamber. The room almost completely coated in ice, which coated the walls, floors and ceiling. Icicles that ranged in sizes dropped from the ceiling, collecting in a mass above a jagged, icy throne. Sitting at the other end of the room, awaiting Jomei to approach was the Night King.

The King shared a much more human-like look than his wight minions, though its skin still pale and cracked. Long white hair flowed from beneath a stone crown, coated in ice, a beard to match. The armor it wore fit for royalty, showed as much wear and decay as the rest of the castle, but shone like new because of the sheet of ice the coated it. As Jomei approached, the King stood, standing about seven feet tall, a cape that matched the blue carpet fell behind them. From aside the throne, they retrieved an ornate looking axe, which the King held easily in a single hand, and a kite shield. Lastly, its eyes finally seemed to open, like two blood red garnets looking into Jomei's soul.

Jomei trembled as he raised his rapier, though not out of fear, but like piece of machinery fighting the elements. Ice began to cling at the ends of Jomei's hair and cloak, if he had blood in this world it would probably be just as frozen. The King rose his shield about two feet off of the ground, before slamming into the surface before the chair which he once sat, causing the room to shake and rumble. Behind Jomei, icicles twice his side crashed down, blocking off the exit.

The Night King's boots pounded against the icy floor as he took two large steps forward, extending its arms out to the side in an inviting manner to allow Jomei the first attack. Jomei's eyes shifted to a new status indicator below his health bar, a debuff to be exact. Seemed like he was right, the below freezing temperatures were going to make it much more difficult to fight this foe. His <Charge> skill probably would not do much to assist in this case, so he would need to depend on old fashioned fighting.

Releasing the breath he was holding, a cloud of his own breath formed before his face. Jomei then rushed forward, the tip of his rapier dragging along the ground. The Night King raised his shield in anticipation for Jomei's attack. Once in melee range, Jomei thrust his rapier forward with as much power as he could muster. The blade crashed against the shield, pushing the Night King back about a foot. From over the shield, the large axe quickly came down, cutting from the top of his shoulder and down to the center of his chest. The blow knocked Jomei onto his back, sliding across the ice a couple of feet. "I need to get past that shield.." he said to himself as he got to his feet, gripping at the gaping wound on his chest.

Another approach, Jomei's rapier clashed with the shield again. This time, he was ready for the counter attack from the King. As the axe came down, Jomei snuck in with an attack, cutting through the armor of the King.

Players facing the Night's King within his throne room receive a variable debuff to their base damage. If their base damage is above 12, it will automatically be reduced to 12. If their base damage is below 12, no change will occur. The bonus damage from Charge and consumables is nullified as well, although the effects of the Charge's mods are not.
