[PP-F2] Fists of Fury! <<Breaking the Unbreakable>> (Randal, Melissa)

Recommended Posts

Aru awoke quietly in the tiny inn room he had rented himself. Ever since Hikoru had taken full reins, he had told Aru that he had to live the life of a frontliner and had to earn a bed such as he had. While it was a bit cold-hearted, Aru knew that he only wanted the best for his pupil, and a bit of tough love was what he needed to grow. He groaned and got up from the uncomfty wooden bed, and went down to have breakfast. It was only a few small things, a few slices of toast, some eggs and three strips of crispy bacon. He said thanks for the meal and dug in, enjoying the savory food. Even though it was only ones and zero's, they still tasted really good. He washed it down briskly with a cup of black coffee, something he learned to enjoy after a few weeks straight of pumpkin flavored anything.

He finished his meal and cleaned up his little table, and made his way towards the center of town. He had put out a bulletin a few days prior as to do a frequently done quest that he had never gotten around to do, <<Breaking the Unbreakable>>. He had gotten two people to join him on the quest, and he was sure that it would make this interesting, as he never really did a quest before. He had gone along for some with Hik and stayed in the background and let him handle it, but he had never lead one before. Even though this one held no real combat, he was still a little nervous, and found himself shifting and adjusting his cloak every few moments as he approached the teleporter. The gleaming white marble ready to be used, he stepped up quietly and took in a deep breath, and exhaled loudly.

"You can do this Seno, just play smart." He said, and he looked up to the sky "Teleport! Floor 2!" He spoke, and soon the pixels overtook his field of vision for a few moments, and he appeared onto the second floor in but an instant. He looked around, and decided to wait near the teleporter, walking off and standing to the side, taking his axe and holding it over his shoulder, awaiting the rest of his party to approach from either the teleporter or the walkways nearby

Spoiler

Quest Rewards:

  • 300 Experience Points
  • Unlock access to <<Martial Arts>> skill

Requirements:

  • Roleplay the climb up the mountain (3+ posts)
  • Must complete all three tasks provided by Master Yunxiang.
  • Must destroy <<The Boulder>> using only your fists. Damage bonuses from consumables and Combat Masteries apply. Damage bonuses apply from Damage/DoT enhancements on <<Martial Arts>> weaponry, but not from your weapon skill rank or mods, nor can you use any Sword Arts.

Summary:

Atop a mountain on Floor 2, there is rumored to be a martial arts master that has taken residence. According to the information gathered, if you can prove your determination and fortitude the master will train you in the ways of martial arts.

Outline:

After roleplaying the climb of one of the tallest mountains of Floor 2, at about three quarters of the way up the player will find themselves at a dojo. As they enter the grounds, an old monk will emerge from nearby and inquire as to the reason for their arrival. The player will need to explain that they want to learn martial arts from a real master, to which the monk will reply, “I will only train those who can prove to me that they are ready.”

The monk will introduce himself as Master Yunxiang, and will explain the three trials required to obtain what the players seek.  All three must be successfully completed in order to learn his secrets.

First Task
Master Yunxiang explains that the body must be honed if it is to become a weapon, therefore they must train it to be ready. Each player must succeed on a natural CD 8+ as they train their body in various workout routines (these are up to each player to describe as they please). Each successful attempt (up to two) will grant the player +2 additional final damage per successful attack against <<The Boulder>>. After two attempts, successful or not, the player may move on to the Second Task.

Second Task
Next, the player(s) must train their mind, as it must be as strong and focused as their body. While sitting and meditating under a waterfall, each player will need to succeed on a natural LD 13+ while attempting to maintain their concentration. Each successful attempt (up to three) will grant the player +2 additional final damage per successful attack against <<The Boulder>>. After three attempts, successful or not, the player may move on to the Third Task.

Third Task
For the final task, the player must use what they have learned in past two tasks to destroy a large boulder. Using only their fists, they must punch the rock until its HP reaches zero, and it shatters. Normal combat rules apply to the BD roll (i.e. 6-8 success, 9 minor critical +1, 10 major critical + 2). However if on the same roll the CD is a natural 12 or the LD a natural 20 the player may subtract an additional 5 HP from the boulder. Once the <<Boulder>> is destroyed, the trials will be complete and the player will unlock the <<Martial Arts>> skill.

Randal had seen a blotted paper hanging from the bulletin board the other day that listed a quest he was all too familiar with, He remembered when others had helped him with his unbreakable quest and decided that it was time for him to pay forward their favour. “Hey Pebbles, this quest is pretty cool, we are going to get you something to eat, it’ll be fun lets go, the mountain view is really nice too.” A warm stirring from Pebbles indicated agreement.

That was how Randal ended up here. The quest leader “Aru” spawned in right in-front of Randal and for some reason, Randal could not decide if it was weird to suddenly tap someone on the back. So with a few quick tilted side steps he arrive face-to-face with Aru. “Hey boss, you the one headed for the boulder atop the mountain?” Randal asked doing a “cute” little wave with his hand to show he was not a scam artist of sorts.

Randal inwardly noted that Aru’s gear was much better than his and concluded that he was either a rich player or a strong one returning to do a beginner quest.

The search for players to assist in the quest had not gone unnoticed by Melissa. While the Martial Arts quest wasn't one she necessarily needed, being a two-handed weapon user, it was still a safe quest, she had heard...and that meant it would be a good way to earn some EXP without putting herself in danger!

As such, she had taken Aru up on his offer, and made her way towards the teleporter of the second floor herself, arriving just in time to see him appear.  "Hey, you're Aru, right? I'm Melissa", she introduced herself. She had a distinctively French accent, which immediately made her heritage obvious.

"And I guess you're another player coming along?", she continued, turning her gaze to Randal. The other two certainly seemed far better geared than her. It was a far cry from what she was used to, that being lower-level players with fresh equipment, but she just supposed that meant they'd all be safe on the way to wherever this quest was supposed to happen.

Aru only had to wait a few moments for the two people whom he had recruited to appear. One was a slightly larger man whom seemed to know what he was doing, with decent equipment to match. He had a few hand wraps on so he was sure that this gentlemen had already completed this quest. The other one was a girl with a slightly distinct accent. He had to think for a moment, but he recognized it as French, if he remembered correctly. He had learned a little bit about French people from his studies, and some from his wrestling matches from exchange students. He nodded at the two of them silently and re-sheathed his axe on his hip in the loop holster he had for it.

"Yes, I'm Aru, thank you for coming." He said formally, his nerves still a little on edge. "We best get moving, I've heard that the trail to the quest is a bit long." he opened up his HUD as he uttered this, and pinpointed the direction they needed to go. He set up a marker for where the quest is, and his small map he had opened pointed him in the right direction. He motioned them forwards with a smile. "Alright, lets get moving. If anyone tries to stop us, I'll tank the damage for you guys." He said with a smile. He sent them both a party invite, and then started to make his way towards the mountain.

He looked forwards and saw the long trek he had to climb. He remembered a story Hik had told him about this quest and how the climb was brutal, and he shuddered. He hadn't done something like this since his training for wrestling. Definitely not to this extent, but hill climbs, pull ups, training on rock walls. All of those paled in comparison for what he had in front of him. He looked at his two companions and gave a small smile. "Well, time to get climbing eh?" he said with a nervous smile. He turned and started his long climb, the trail well worn and his knees ready for the aching that was sure to come.

It was moments like this he really wished he didn't wear Heavy Armor

Randal formally introduces himself and Pebbles to the team. “Yeap, totally agree, let’s get a move on, I heard that the system update changed some aspects of this quest so I definitely had to check it out. Hope you don’t mind Pebbles and myself from hijacking your quest.” Randal tapped what appeared to be rocky scarf that begin to light and glow as molten cracks form on it. Two bright orange eyes peep sheepishly at the two other people in the area.

“Ah right, My name in Randal, nice to meet you two. I’m a martial artist so it shouldn’t be too hard. I can even lead the way if the location hasn’t changed.” Randal tapped his menu and after a quick moment suggested that he knew a short cut. Taking the lead, he brought them along a path that was steady and safe up the side of the tallest mountain. After a few hours of travelling, they were getting close to their destination and his martial arts teacher Master Yun Xiang. Along the way, Randal spots some edible vegetables and casually pockets them.

It was good to get a look at the two people she'd be doing the quest with. The leader, Aru, seemed to have a good grasp of his own head, and was clearly the most durable of the group, both from level and from the fact that he was wearing heavy armour. Then there was the martial artist, who, if the things she'd heard about this quest were true, would make it significantly easier to actually get this over with. Rumours and infobrokers had mentioned that it was tedious and hellish, but having three people in total would hopefully make it a cinch.

Randal's 'scarf' certainly caught Melissa's eye, and she couldn't help but stare curiously back at the tiny creature...before clearing her throat, and nodding to Aru as she accepted the invite. 31 and 22? Man, these two were so far ahead...

"Sounds good to me, don't want this to take any longer than it has to", she agreed as she followed along behind the leader of the group.

It was fortunate they had someone who'd already done this quest to show them along the path, since otherwise, there probably would have been some time of actually trying to find the way up. However, it certainly wasn't making it easy, either. Swimming hadn't prepared her body for this...

Aru nodded as the gentlemen in their party offered to lead the way. It would definitely make it faster, and his eyes had caught onto his scarf, and he was intrigued. He knew about many familiars, from Pumpkins to parrots, but this was a new one. Was there truly no limit to the amount of range a familiar could be? He'd have to take a look into this and maybe get something familiar, or perhaps get something different that was way cooler. He had no idea though, and he had some time to think about it. He saw the path ahead and let out a small sigh, and continued forward. His armor clanked a bit underneath his green cloak, and he did his best to ignore the sound, trying to focus on the trail before him, and not how his armor was starting to sound more and more like his joints as they protested against the sheer mountain they were headed towards.

"They weren't kidding." He said with a small laugh. "This really does kinda suck. Hopefully the quest isn't too much harder than this." He half hoped, and he felt himself working up a little bit of a sweat. Even though he was now max level, he still hadn't done something like this in awhile, and he felt it was truly starting to show. "So, do you know the name of the NPC that we have to talk to? I don't really have any info on him since the update." He asked the one leading them up the path, Randal if he remembered correctly. He wasn't the best at names, but he'd do his best to remember the hand-wrapped man's username.

“Hahaha, why don’t you ask him yourself?” Randal chuckled loudly as he turned around a large stone rock to reveal a small arch of rock that he walked through. The rocky stone path turned into a flat paved one, with stone that had been smoothed over. In the distance, Randal reveals to his party a courtyard before a nice wood and stone house. The Courtyard is paved with half broken rocks and half full boulders, many appeared to have holes in them. There were only a few players in the area, and they were all doing various forms of exercises. Randal shivered and tried to disguise it as a cough when he thought about his own time here. At the back of the house was a looming waterfall that extended high up above the rest of the landscape, it appeared to be coming from the top of the mountain which is slightly less than the total altitude the whole party had climbed so far.

Randal signalled with his chin for Aru to open the door to the hut.

Melissa had heard talk of familiars before, so she supposed that 'Pebbles' must have been one. Perhaps it'd be worth trying to find one of her own? Even if they didn't have any mechanical value, finding one was probably a quest, and quests meant experience! And with the redhead being as far behind as she was, she certainly needed as much of that as possible.

"Ah, I really hope it's not as hard as this. I'm used to some physical exercise, but this is much harder. Tout fait mal", she grumbled, mumbling the last part under her breath. Her legs, especially, were feeling the fatigue, though at least she didn't have to deal with a stitch or shin splint or anything like that, since Cardinal blocked out any sense of pain.

Once they finally reached what appeared to be the dojo, she let out a sigh of relief, and immediately moved to take a seat on some steps, red eyes scanning over the courtyard as she did. Boulders with holes in them...were those going to be the final lesson? That would make sense for why it was such a tedious quest. Destroying boulders with their bare hands would take forever!

Aru nodded as Melissa agreed with him about the trek. This really was a long journey for such a simple quest, but he felt his legs give a sigh of relief as Randal said for him to ask himself, and he revealed a sacred-looking area behind a stone. The feeling of the area felt like some places back home, and he felt at ease and he took in the surroundings. He heard Randal make some sort of cough, and he put it off as the altitude. He did have to admit, the air was a little thin up here compared to when they started their journey.

"Uh, alright." He said, and motioned his way towards the little hut. He walked up and knocked on the door, but as soon as his finger rapped lightly against the door, he was blown back as the NPC kicked open the door, He was hurled through the air as his back soon met the rocky ground, and Aru grunted in pain. The NPC, who's name appeared as "Master Yunxiang", approached him and his party. The master stroked his beard and nodded.

"You came for lessons, no? First Lesson, keep your legs on the ground to win a fight." He mused, and Aru muttered a few profane words as he got up, his armor clanking as he did so. "Now, you three, follow me." the master spoke, and his eyes locked with Randal. "Came back for more lessons? Very well." He spoke, and soon the Quest window popped up. Aru pressed accept and quietly made his way towards where the Master was leading them.

“There are three things that you must do, first, train the body, second, train the mind, last, break rock. You think this is easy, you are wrong, martial arts is not for the weak, we make our body the weapon we fight with, you think you can forge the body in fire like you forge your weapon? Come now, I will burn it into you.” If there was ever a time to be scared, this was it. The Master instructed the trio to undergo a series of physical workouts that was similar to those that the Shao Lin Monks would undergo. Squatting over burning incense with both hands outstretched with jars of dirt on the head, arms, and things to maintain balance. The difficulty of the tasks varied for each person. The Master was an absolute expert when it comes to understanding how much pain a person’s body could endure and pushing it to attain maximum impact.

Seeing Aru be blown back by the NPC called Melissa to jump up in surprise, almost falling over herself from stumbling. What the hell was that?! God, if that's how the Master introduced himself, then she could tell this training was going to be absolutely hellish. She certainly wasn't looking forward to this. Was it even worth the XP? She wondered what she'd gotten herself into as she tapped to accept the quest...

Unfortunately, even with the Master's expert eye, Melissa didn't quite manage to grasp the task this time. She simple couldn't keep her own balance while squatting in such a way, and more than a few times she ended up falling back onto the incense. Yet another time she was thankful that pain wasn't a worry, but emotionally...well, it was pretty humiliating, especially since they probably thought of her as being weak already.  She'd simply have to try and accomplish it next time, so she didn't look like a fool...

The Master instructed the three of them to undergo intense physical training. He looked forwards and saw Randal get in position and he followed suite. The jars were placed and he easily lifted them. Balance was one of the few things he was good at, and it was something he trained on for his meets back home, where if a good push made you lost your balance, you were onto the mat and you lost. He felt confident in himself and even though his body screamed in pain, he welcomed the feeling of training like an old friend. He felt his adrenaline pumping and he enjoyed the feeling of it, but he heard a clatter from nearby. He saw that Melissa had fallen onto the ground. Instantly, he moved off of where he was and places his jars on the ground next to him. He went over to Melissa and held out a hand.

"Hey, give it another go." he said with a large smile on his face. "It's all about your footing. Watch where your toes are pointing and try to keep them straight or bent, but don't shift from the position you choose." He said, trying to give pointers on how he balanced. He held out his hand and awaited to see how she would react to his act of kindness.

Randal was aware that he should by all rights put down the jars and help Aru and Melissa, but he really wanted to train himself further, so he did both, he lifted one leg at a time and rotated them to face his teammates, he then kept his legs horizontal as pivoted on alternate legs to get closer to them. He then tried his best to look at them, but it was very difficult with a jar on his head. “Are you both okay? There might be something else you can try, there’s no guarantee that it will be easier, but your body may be more suited for it.” Randal then looked at them and suggested Melissa ask the Master for a different challenge, maybe one that involved swimming against the current of the downstream river that formed as a result of the waterfall. Aru on the other hand appeared to be doing just fine.

Melissa wasn't the type to deny help when she needed it, and so she took Aru's hand to help herself up from the ground. It was a bit embarrassing to need the help, but having a mindset of refusing help just to keep her pride was certain to get her killed in this world. "Thanks. And I think I'll do that, Randal. Would probably be better to focus on what I'm good at, rather than trying to force myself to do something else..."

With that thought in mind, the redhead approached Master Yunxiang, somewhat sheepishly given how she'd seen him launch Aru a few meters. She didn't want that to end up happening to her! Fortunately, he actually seemed rather receptive to the idea of focusing more on her strengths, and had her swim against the current just as Randal had suspected...though unlike with her usual swimming, she didn't get to wear a nice, comfy streamlined swimsuit. Instead, she had to do it in all her gear, and in the thin mountain air to boot.

Fortunately, even despite all that, she managed to handle it, and reached the bank where he'd sent one disciple to wait for her. "Hah, I feel disgusting...my clothes are all wet and soggy..."

Aru helped Melissa up and she went over to the Master, changing tasks to swimming. The thought of joining interested him, but he decided to stay on the task he was on. He grabbed his jars and joined Randal on top of the pole, doing his best to place the jars as they were before. However, getting back into the groove of balancing them was easier said than done. He attempted to juggle them around and find the right spot for all of them, but one after the other they rolled, hopped or just fell off of the perches he attempted to make, and ended up with more dirt than coals beneath him. He sheepishly looked at the Master and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly

"This was a lot easier when you helped me balance them." He spoke softly. The Master only gave a small "tsk" and went to focus on Melissa's progress in the river. He looked at Randal a little crest fallen "Well that sucked. Guess I have to move onto the next task." He said with a small sigh. He did his best and attempted to pick up the pieces of broken pottery, scalding his hands against the coals but managing to get the most of it, and made a small pile for the master to do as he wished. He clapped his hands together to get rid of the stray dust, and looked on to see what would be done next.

The disciple that Master Yun Xiang has sent to wait for Melissa at the bank. Yep, that was Randal, you see, there were no permanent disciples at the Dojo and most who had already graduated deigned it too torturous to come back. Unfortunately, Randal did and being sent on errand runs by his master was a part of the process. Anyway, they did not have to move from this spot, after all, Master Yun Xiang had informed him that the next task was here. This was just as new as asking Randal work on his fitness, something that the Master completely skipped over the first time he was here. Must be the update that caused all these changes, Randal greeted Melissa as she came on shore. “Do not worry, at least you are soaked in nice clean water.” As he picked up a towel hanging from his waist and squeezed it, showing her a copious amount of sweat. “We are the ones that are nasty, haha. See here comes Aru.” Randal said, pointing at the party leader who was walking up with the Master.

Wasting no time, the Master sorted them quickly into a row and told them to sit under the waterfall and meditate. Yes, the waterfall that seemed to be pouring from the sky, the water was so rough that Randal thought he might go unconscious from the pain or the burden.

Seeing the sweat practically dripping from the cloth made Melissa wrinkle her nose. She wasn't the dainty, ladylike type, but...that was still a tad disgusting. More disgusting than she was currently feeling, with her soaked-through clothing. Normally, she wouldn't be complaining about working out with two sweaty, muscular guys...but this was absolutely hellish. She couldn't focus on anything but the burning in her muscles and how heavy she felt, weighed down by her waterlogged gear.

With all that, when she was directed to take a seat beneath a damned waterfall, she did a visible doubletake at the Master. "A waterfall? Seriously? This is absolutely ridiculous...", she grumbled, before shaking her head and moving towards it. Normally, her red hair would have bounced and bobbed from such movement, but the water had plastered it to her face.

It was that feeling that led her to be completely unable to focus when she sat beneath the pounding water...that, combined with the fact that it was incredibly noisy, not to mention that it was killing her back. "Agh, what the hell, there's no way I can focus like this..."

Aru finished the pile of broken jars and came over to the other two players, following suite as the master told them to meditate under the waterfall. Aru instantly went to his equipment and unequipped his heavy armor, only his basic clothes on underneath his green cloak. He felt as if the Heavy Armor would get in the way, or maybe even make it easier to sit underneath the waterfall as it would weigh him down, and he genuinely wished to try this. He sat down under the waterfall, the rushing tides crashing over his head as he fought the pull of the tides for but a few moments. Eventually, he was able to find good seating on the rock and was able to start to enjoy the rush of the waterfall

He calmed his breathing, taking deep breaths and letting them out after holding them for a few moments. As he closed his eyes and focused, he found himself in his own thoughts, thinking back to the times he spent on different quests and missions for the IBS, and how it never really stuck with him well. The more he tried and attempted to join them, the more it became a realization that he never entirely fit. He preferred the feeling of heavy armor and an axe compared to light armor and a dagger or a rapier. He still didn't know why Hik had chosen him as an apprentice when so many more of them fit the bill

And maybe he would never know

Randal was not sure which direction was up at any given moment while within the torrential waterfall. The constant weight of water beating down on his shoulders were concussive and left Randal with a rocking headache, Randal did not manage to find any of the inner peace that the Master was touting but definitely found the brain space to actually compare this to waterboarding, a torture technique used during the war on spies to make them think they are drowning even thought they were not. While there was no cloth draped over his face and no one was shouting at Randal to give up any military secrets, he found it had to calm down. There was still so much to do so what was he doing getting attacked by the inanimate flowing water. This was truly an incredibly dull and painful experience, more so than the day it had taken for him to wear down the boulder they first time around.
