[PP-F23] Hunting Tension

Recommended Posts

The light of teleporting to the floor fades away as she lets out a soft sigh arriving upon the main settlement of the floor of Kalanaes and she wastes no time making her way towards her home and she makes her way down the path towards the middle of the town having bought a grecian style house within a place that was just full of elven designs so it was not really a challenge for anybody to notice the place that stands out like a sore thumb. She swaps out of her heavy armor and puts away her sword and snowglobe leaving only her crescent moon necklace hanging around her neck wearing a simple black t-shirt and pants not a need to be battle ready within what is basically her home is what she has come to know this floor as. She makes her way past various npcs and ignoring the stares that come from them passing by various shops and picking on little pieces of gossip here and there if weird people they've seen or how the people that come through is ruining their perfect capital. She rolls her eyes passing by a local tavern with a bulletin board with a picture of Uzgeke which was once a quest turned field boss, but her attention doesn't draw towards it just viewing it as quest information having not learned of the change or even the existence of these mobs that are known as field bosses. Though taking note that within this tavern and around it are players that stick out due to just being human rather then racist drows that permeate the underdark of this floor.

Ugzeke, Ugzeke.

Hadn't he killed that thing before?

Apparently it was different now, turned into a Field Boss post 3.0. So many things were different, now, and there was so much that he had to relearn from scratch, especially now with his potential at earning decent EXP being skewed by Paragon's steep level requirement incline. Field Bosses were apparently a means to help them along, but how strong were they exactly? Could he possibly Solo it? Most monsters now seemed as though they were intended to be fought alongside parties, but he'd manage to just barely make it through on his own by a hair, skirting by on the brink of death.

He hurried out of Kalanaes. Allegedly, it lived in the caverns. If he could get there before anyone else did, maybe he could take advantage of the grinding spot for a while.

Pinball chowed down on consumables in the meantime. Just in case.

Time is money, and lately Dustin felt like he was running out on both. His engine of a brain was low on steam and lately it’d been on autopilot. He hadn’t noticed all the changes around him, or that he was becoming stronger in the slightest, he was just kind of there, like he always was. Numerous quests and battles had numbed him to this feeling, so he didn’t really mind, he was never a big help anyways.

He wanted to feel better, and the only way to do that was to fight something dangerous. A monster he had never heard of was apparently gaining a lot of power and had been promoted by the CEO of shit we call Cardinal to field boss. He was sure he’d die if he went solo, but he had no one to call, after clearing his friends list he refused to meet anyone new. Save for a few names that hold deeper meaning, Dustin’s only option was to start buying potions and hope to any kind of God he wants to believe in that no lucky shots catch his neck.

On the 23rd floor there was a town, one everyone knew anyways so it doesn’t really need an introduction, Kalanaes. The town of people not willing to live in direct sunlight. Dustin made his way through the buildings at a rate that can only be described as speed walking, when out of the corner of his eye he spots her.

Hestia...

He stares in disbelief as he wondered where she had been all this time. She had helped him through so much, but disappeared when he needed her most. It’s not her fault, I can’t expect help everytime I’m in trouble anyways... although it could hurt to ask. Taking a deep breath, Dustin steels his resolve and begins towards Hestia. Not speaking to anyone really makes you worry about the first words you’ll say. ”Hey! How’ve I been... I mean how’ve you been?” It didn’t help he had killed two people not that long ago, and of course she’s one of the people Dustin respects the most in this world.

Good thing he elected to ignore the past.

Aru had been exploring the different floors as of recent, trying to compile the list of Field Bosses that had been popping up on every floor. A few of them were quests that had turned into Field bosses, and others were creatures never seen before in all of Aincrad. He was going to be the first to defeat each and every single one, and he was going to make sure of that. He was scoping out floor 23, and the more he looked at it, the more nervous he became. He wouldn't be able to defeat this thing on his own. He wasn't good at damage, all he was good at was soaking in damage and stopping things from moving. That's about it, he didn't even have a familiar to help him either. He was on his own most days, solo. It made things a bit bitter sweet. He had gotten used to his mentor's company, his constant working and coffee drinking. But now he only had cups alone.

He shook his head and brushed those thoughts aside. Aru would find friends, he would maybe even join a guild, even though his mentor had told him to stray away from such things. It was his call, and he could do what he wanted. He walked his way into the town and ignored the NPC's stares. They used to bother him, but now he knew that they were only code, and their thoughts weren't human, weren't real. They just reacted to how he was in the game. But in the corner of his eye, he noticed a player whom he hadn't seen in a long time, but he recognized her due to his time with the Info Brokers. He scanned his knowledge of the frontlines to try and think of their username. Hestia, that was it. He recognized her from the visit she had to Hikoru's estate a few months before his retirement. He had left in a bit of a hurry due to the atmosphere, but he remembered her nonetheless. His instincts told him to go and explore, try to find info. But he knew he was here for another mission. He walked up to her and what looked to be a fellow friend, someone who wasn't all that familiar to him.

"Hestia, The Healing Tank of the frontlines." He spoke, a hand outstretched. "I'm Aru, pleasure to make your acquaintance. We have a similar contact, Hikoru." He said with a nod of understanding. He didn't have to say words to remember the day that they met, as he was sure she remembered it well. "I'm sorry if I'm interrupting something, but I was wondering if you would come with me to fight the beast in the wood?" He motioned towards the drawing of Ugzeke "He seems to be a problem, and I've heard he gives a decent EXP reward." He said with a warm smile.

Stopping when hearing her name called out she turns to the person that calls out to her and looks at the player and gives a warm smile towards the person that comes forward as she waves towards him and electing to ignore the slight stumble of his words. I've been doing good with these new system changes i kinda explored a few floors and getting back into the whole swing. She cuts herself off as another person approaches and greets her in a very what she could only describe as straight to the point professional sort of manner seemingly choosing his words carefully at least from her perspective of this man. When hearing mention of Hikoru she slowly nods as she can really only one time she met Hikoru that wasn't on frontline business which was when she went to his house and saw his protegee. When hearing mention of in her mind a quest she glances towards the side at Uzgeke and nods her head remembering him to be easy, but things are never really certain with changes that 3.0 had brought. Sure i wouldn't mind coming along to do that quest with you. Though if you don't mind me asking how has Hikoru been since we talked that was kinda the last time i had a chance to talk to him? She asks curiously wondering how the master of shadows had been since she last saw him on the floor twenty four fight.

Would you want to join us Dustin? I am kinda lacking on damage and it's better safe then sorry. Oh and top of that as i said doing good exploring the castle has gotten a lot more fun since everything feels more alive in a sense, and i'm curious where all these quests are like now. She says offering rather quickly after she asked her question towards Aru feeling a bit awkward since she just stopped what she was saying halfway, and not really knowing a good way to transition back towards that. If she would get a yes from Dustin she would then look towards Aru and gesture for him to lead the way.

He heard the roars and rumbles of Ugzeke echoing across the walls of the dark tunnels well before he even saw him.

Thanks to Night Vision and his gradual, increasing familiarity with the once seemingly intricate network of underground passages over the times of his wanderings, Pinball was able to travel quickly and largely unimpeded by obstacles. He drew his sword as he approached. It was time to retire Cold Fervor for the meantime and give Ruby's Astral Blade a go at it. Ugzeke grew larger and larger as he rushed forward, leapt forward, and unleashed a vicious string of attacks as Cardinal carried him through Meteor Break.

And then he fell to the ground behind Ugzeke, standing in the large cavern in which the Field Boss resided. Interestingly enough, he... didn't seem to notice Pinball at all, or even move to attack him; it confused the swordsman, but he also found himself thankful for whatever stroke of luck he'd been caressed by. From the looks of his attack, Ugzeke was built like a truck, with an HP pool to match. He didn't know how far he would be able to tear through it before he had to retreat.

Dustin's eyes fell to the floor, as Hestia simply accepted the request of Aru. That's alright, he probably knows her better. The brown hared boy would give a weak smile and place his hand behind his head. "No that's okay... I wouldn't want to get in the way." His words still seemed to be filled with life despite his recent rejection and the less recent events. Defeated, the young boy would walk away. It was time to fight anyways, that always cheers him up.

Dustin charged through the cave system, hoping to find the right spot so he can take on a powerful monster. Darkness surrounds him and can only hear the echoes of his footsteps, except for a faint rumbling in the distance. That's gotta be a monster. He would turn on his heel and run headlong towards the great ruckus in the distance. As he closed in he heard a roar, this only emboldened the boy as he picked up speed and pushed onward.

Rounding a corner, he could see faint movements and the shadow of a large figure in the distance, it was time. The light of his sword art would point him out like a laser beam, following an unusual path to it's target. A great leap would carry Dustin up as his hand drew back.

A motion sharp as the best knife in Aincrad would lead to a very loud impact as Dustin falls back to the floor, slamming into the rocks beneath him and letting out a cry vaguely akin to a dying whale. "HELL YEAH!" He would shout, his words echoing through the chamber. The monster hardly moved in response to Dustin's attack, at least from what he could see, except for that it had an idle sway in it's legs for a moment, and it's head was shaking.

Almost as if Ugzeke was trying to get a fly out of his hair.

Aru smiled happily as Hestia agreed. But he was a bit upset when the young man denied the request to join them and headed off in the direction of the fields. Maybe he was going to train. Who knows? The young man seemed capable enough to handle himself. He focused his attention back to Hestia, who had asked. Aru had a small pained look, but soon hid it with a small smile.

"Im... not sure. He's retired from the frontlines and I'm no longer his apprentice. He's given me the last task to join the frontlines and carry on his legacy, but personally, it feels like a little too much for me, so I'm not joining until I defeat every field boss. When I do that, I'll feel like I'm strong enough to go." He said, his smile widening more as he talked, excited about his personal path to power, and he hoped to join them soon. "Plus, I need to get some better armor, and i need a shield." He awkwardly looked at his arm "I'm uh, kinda useless without one. I have all the points into block but no way to use it without one." He spoke with a small chuckle. "But enough about me, let's get moving and go beat up the Ogre." He opened his HUD and marked where he needed to go on the map, starting to walk toward the area where Ugzeke was

Ah, Jesus Christ. Of all people...

When was the last time he'd even spoken with Dustin? Probably when he'd cut his arm off. For a brief moment Pinball considered slinking back into the shadows and trying to creep away from the fight entirely. He hadn't seemed to notice him, and showing himself would probably be opening a can of worms he didn't really feel like dealing with, at least not at the moment. But he was able to see perfectly how Ugzeke seemed to take notice of him after his punch, angrily turning to face him though quickly discovering that its body wouldn't obey its commands. Ugzeke was stunned.

But with it seemed to shake it off quickly, flexing, a massive wall of annoyed muscles, and Pinball found his feet moving against his better judgement.

He had the overwhelming sense of dread that once Ugzeke deemed them as threats, they weren't going to have as easy of a time.

"Zomekko." Swirling black shadow encompassed his blade, birthed from the jar he carried on his belt, and Pinball unleashed another powerful attack against Ugzeke, tearing through its defenses with a ferocity that far outstripped his previous. As he did, Zomekko's darkness leapt from his sword to surround Ugzeke, becoming firm, solid, wrapping around him and forcing his body to the ground and into itself, like so many pitch-black rubber bands compressing its form and holding it in place. Now, even if Ugzeke wanted to attack, he'd have to spend his time breaking free of Zomekko's confines first. It'd hopefully buy them some time.

There is a term that she hadn't heard of as she glances back towards the uzgeke paper and then back towards Aru as understanding follows with what that means for the quest and some other quests that had disappeared that she was looking for on other floors. That a new type of either mob category or subquest or something got labeled as a field boss and made them the new thing that players could do to get a bit more exp to help themselves further towards the frontline. Then their was the knowledge that Hikoru had decided to stop being a frontliner and just retire from the world of Aincrad something she hadn't heard of the idea before. Just stopping and going to live peacefully to just in her eyes seemingly give up and do his own thing whatever in the world that could be, and not really knowing about his information broker job he had taken up to do his part. Okay well if you need help with gear i could provide if you can equip tier three stuff if you don't mind the grecian theme of the gear. She says and opens up a trade menu with Aru as she selects two pieces of gear since she doesn't know what weapon he would want or would work for him once tapping those two options the trade request would go through as she looks towards him with a polite smile.

After the request would be sent she would look towards the Uzgeke sign and look for the general direction of the creature, and once it listed a vague general direction of the northwestern part of the cavern deeper towards the darkness. She would then make her way towards the northern gate of the elven village and out towards the cavern system and along the path equipping her armor, shield, and snowglobe. Take your time to get to the top and  along the way make friends, and don't feel the need to be the next anybody just be you. She says towards Aru giving her piece of advice from what she had learned during her time within Aincrad.

Dustin hadn't noticed the health bar had taken damage when he arrived, he thought he was the only one there. Sadly, his will to fight this monster alone was uprooted when he saw another figure rush in and strike the beast in the chest. No matter, just means less stress on the mind and body.

"Zomekko."

Dustin recognized that word, but he couldn't quite figure out from where. It wouldn't weigh on him long before he decided it didn't really matter, what mattered is this mystery person with an oddly comforting voice had decided to help Dustin. The shadow would lunge forward and attack once more, but something was different, His attack wrapped the enemy and the giant fell to the floor. This was Dustin's chance.

His sword art would charge up and Dustin would run in, his attack was going to hold less power but he still needed to do something in this moment. Can't just let his new friend do all of the work. As his green hand fell backwards, his feet planted into the ground but his upper body kept moving. A swing of his hips led to a massive rotation in his shoulder and his hand connected firmly with the sternum of his prey, pushing him back an inch as Dustin marveled at the raw power he possessed.

If only he had this much strength in his school, he wouldn't have that damned scar above his eyebrow.

It was only then that Dustin recognized the name and the voice that had called it. His heart dropped upon the realization that his past had finally caught up to him. It was someone he was almost close to, but yet they had pushed eachother away in a series of unfortunate events akin to the downfall of the Roman empire. Dustin would turn towards the silhouette of the man he once hated and utter a single word... one that could probably unravel this whole situation and kill two kids in a cave.

"Pinball?"

Aru gave a wide smile as Hestia offered to give him some tier 3 equipment. While he was sure it wasn't the best tier as of right now, it would still be far greater than the armor he was wearing right now. He nodded in thanks as he saw the request to trade and accepted it quietly. He equipped the items and felt the heavier weight of the armor on him. He looked down and mentally shuddered. It definitely wasn't his choice of style, but he wouldn't complain about free items. He comfortable held onto the shield and then punched his open palm

"Alright, lets go bust a skull." he smiled with a fierce determination. Hestia noted something about guilds, but he didn't quite catch it since he was putting on his equipment. He would ask her about it later, but for now he opened up his HUD and pinpointed the location again, then motioned towards that direction. "Lets get moving before that kid kills the ugly ogre." He said with a laugh. He started to make his way towards the fighting as he heard the clanking of blades against pixelated skin.

"Crap he's already-" He turned the corner to see two people "They, they already started." He said. He had a feeling that they had gained a little bit of hate, and he decided to grab it before they got too high. He clanged his axe against his shield and stood his ground, an almost sumo-like stance. "HEY! BIG GREEN AND UGLY! GET OVER HERE SO I CAN PUNCH YOUR PIMPLE-FILLED FACE!" he said, and took a defensive stance in case it attempted to strike him.

He didn't like hearing his name from that guy. It brought back uncomfortable memories.

Pinball had to put another Sword Art into Ugzeke. He knew he did - they didn't even have him down to half health, and here they were talking in the middle of a genuine life or death situation. But an emotion flew through him that he didn't have the words to describe, and despite himself, Pinball found himself faltering, hesitating, leaning towards the Field Boss as though he were going to charge, but not moving, his eyes locked on someone who was both an old friend and a recent adversary. What was he supposed to even say? Pinball found himself shrinking into himself, almost fearfully, his breaths growing more laborious with each passing second --

-- So it was a good thing that Aru and Hestia burst onto the scene when they did. Letting out a Howl that immediately drew the attention of an Ugzeke finally snapping through his bonds, an ironclad player made his appearance followed closely by another that he knew well. The shout worked wonders to snap Pinball out of his daze, as well, and Pinball finally had his senses returned to him enough to look Dustin in the eye, and point his sword towards Ugzeke.

"Let's kill this guy first, alright?" What was intended to come out forcefully and stoically instead came out small and weakly, but through grit teeth, he figured that it would do.

She would smile when seeing her old gear be equipped bringing back a sense of nostalgia back during when she had that shield and armor a dream to just keep her first set of armor but just constantly reforged to be a better version of what it once was. However, just like how one would change styles of clothes she had adjusted her style to lean heavier into her grecian naming conventions and with that as well the idea that she had to attack and be on the offensive. Becoming more reactionary then making the first move within a fight and even more so not that she didn't even have a weapon to count as a way to even defend herself anymore. She would follows Aru towards the location of the field boss not feeling much pressure to go any faster then he is since at the end of the day the mob would stand forever and they could get there in ten minutes or ten days and the only difference would be how fast they had gotten experience point sand what they had to kill on the way to face the mighty beats that lumbers within this floor. As soon as they leave the safety of the lights of the city she would open up her inventory and pull out a glowstone to serve as a flash light for the two players as hestia would hold it within one hand tightly and creating a small hole for the light to escape with her other hands.

Compared to her last visit outside of the city where she tested the capacities of her build being able to see brought a new light that at least the foliage had remained within this floor a small welcoming thought towards the vast differences that make up everything else about this game with the new changes that have been made. Hearing the sounds of clanging steel once she made it upon the scene she would shine her impromptu flash light around spotting the lumbering Uzgeke and then spotting the sight of both Dustin and much to her surprise and quick flash of anger seeing the killer known as Pinball having got here before her. As much as she would want nothing more then to walk over and grab him and take him towards the closest thing they have as a prison within this game she knows that she is on a equal playing field with him now, and she can't be certain everyone around her is willing to risk their necks for her either. Thus she holds her action and serves as nothing more then a flashlight to keep everyone able to see Uzgeke. We all can talk about this later, but for now you now have perfect vision on this creature enjoy it while this glowstone lasts. She calls out towards the other players not doing her tank thing, and not even trying to heal anybody since much to her surprise on top of seeing them here they are also perfectly uninjured in any capacity from facing off against the lumbering oaf of a mob.

Dustin couldn't have possibly prepared for the inconclusive mess of emotions seeing Pinball would bring, but right now he was more focused on the beast to really care about closure. "What do you mean? I wasn't gonna say anything." Dustin replied, Pinball apparently assumed the boy would have an idea of what's gonna happen afterwards, meanwhile Dustin was planning to disappear once he had his col and his experience. "We have nothing to talk or fight about." He would remark, getting ready to attack.

His hand would glow a bright yellow, his legs would push him off the ground just high enough to reach Ugzeke's knees, then...

Shouting and bright lights would call the brown haired brawler's attention to the area behind him. "WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING HERE?!" Dustin would shout across the battlefield, not even realizing he was able to see fine now. Instead he was angry that more people had shown up to steal what he thought was his hunt. Still though, Pinball had at least been there to do a lot of damage, so Dustin didn't really care what he did. Not like the kid could do anything about it anyways, Pinball always has been so strong, it was kind of intimidating. But before Dustin could react, he realized he had missed his chance to attack. Instead he would place a foot on Ugzeke's leg and jump back to the group.

"Well that was a waste of time and effort."

Aru felt the tension in the room rise as each of his other comrade in arms saw each other. He felt that if he lifted his axe a little too high, he would cut whatever invisible string that was holding the peace and all hell would break loose. He'd have to do his best to avoid that, and he decided he would start by gaining more hate on the gigantic monster. He twisted the axe in his hand, getting a feel for the right timing. He took in a deep breath, and charged forward, screaming like an idiot and positioned his axe to activate his strongest sword art: Ukon Kirves. He didn't have Martial Arts, so it was impossible to get ahold of his highest rank Sword Art, so this would have to be the best he could do.

The sword art hit home, slicing and slashing against the creature. a wide grin fell on his face as he saw that he dealt.... one damage. Apparently, the MIT on this creature was far too high for his low damage. But, he gained hate which was his entire plan. He retreated backwards and had a sheepish smile. "I'm probably the only tank that does that, sorry." He spoke to the two men with swords. "Perhaps I should leave the damage to you two, i'll just soak up the damage."

That sense of dread was almost immediately replaced with annoyance.

He watched Dustin run off towards Ugzeke again, flippantly dismissing him, and for a moment he considered wedging his sword between his shoulder blades "on accident" as he took his attack on the Field Boss. Ultimately, though, the presence of the two tanks joining the battle dissuaded him from the hot-headed decision to cut Dustin down for a second time. Instead, he held his tongue and unleashed Meteor Break on the massive wall of flesh and muscle, still a little bit unnerved by the monster's almost cartoonish dismissal of the fighters slicing through his HP. There had to be some sort of catch to all of it, right? Surely. Pulling back and backing off, Pinball would take a second to observe instead of attack, trying to discern just what was up with it. Some trick, some mechanic, some catch -- there had to be something.

She would look towards Dustin with confusion when he would get angry at the appearance of herself and Aru since they had quite literally tried to invite him to do this with them. She would just shake her head removing the small distraction and just focus upon the fight knowing that from the health bar of the boss and the fact nobody had gotten hit she isn't needed, and if anything it would serve as a way for Aru to get more confidence he had solo tanked this without any help. Instead she just kept her position and aimed the light towards the large Uzgeke keeping the vision up for everyone. We quite literally asked you if you wanted to join us Dustin no need to get upset at us showing up here. She says calmly towards the brown haired fighter while then looking towards Aru and gives a quick nod of her head having almost forgot about the cooldown on howl that was newly added to the game. Beyond those words she is just observing the large creature adjusting for any stray movement it makes as she can tell that it is just as stupid as the last time she had fought it as a quest. Don't worry if it doesn't attack it's practically almost blind to everything around it. More content to stand still and unleash a powerful attack once and awhile. It usually swaps every other attack from what i can remember when it can attack if it's anything like the quest version. She calls out towards the group of fighters while getting herself ready to move to the aid of either three of these players to heal them if they got hit.

Everyone had been doing their part, each one making sure the monster died as swiftly as possible. Well, they were trying their best, but honestly it didn’t matter what you did, sometimes you miss. Whether the game is rigged against you or not, it happens to the best fighters. Dustin’s hand would charge blue as he listened to Hestia speak, her words completely distracting the kid from what he was doing. "Damn it you never said that you were coming to fight Ugzeke, so don’t act like it’s my fault you guys decided to come here after I left.”

His hand would glow brighter before he turned back, it was time to run this bastard through, when all of a sudden Dustin couldn’t think to act for a moment, a small second of hesitation and his sword art would disappear into nothing. This fight could’ve been so much more dangerous had these two tanks not shown up, but they were drawing the giant closer and closer to death it was almost crazier than the fact he hadn’t attacked. Dustin didn’t really like that fact, but it was better than them being wiped out of existence in 3 turns. ”There’s gotta be a reason he thinks we aren’t worth his time. Or maybe he’s saving himself. You know, like a good Christian Ogre.”

Dustin would smile at the group, proud of his joke and ready to finish this fight.

Aru watched the battlefield play out quietly. Things seemed to be going in their favor. From Ugzeke not dealing any damage to them, to most of them landing attacks and dealing a solid amount of damage. He decided it would be in his best interest to keep up the lead of Hate, since one crit and one of the DPS players would surpass him. He quickly charged forward, his axe spinning in his hand as he wound up and attacked, the first slash hitting the large creature in the upper body, and the sword art soon taking over, making a lightning-shaped attack into the creatures burly chest. He retreated and held his shield up quickly, in case it decided to take a strike against him this time.

Once again, his attack barely made a dent in the creatures health pool. He was definitely too tanky, and he didn't deal the damage he wished. But, he had to remember that damage wasn't his main goal. He wasn't Hikoru, he wasn't any of the frontlines. He was Aru, and he knew he'd have to earn a title as the others did for how he fought in the battlefield. He would earn it in his own way, just as everyone else had.
