History/Personality

Hitomi was born to an average Japanese family, and she lived a normal life throughout her childhood. Studious and academically-gifted, Hitomi was an excellent student, and she dreamed of having a big career once she reached adulthood. While aware of all the obstacles that she had to face, being a woman in a conservative Japanese society, Hitomi wouldn't let it slow her down, knowing that while she wouldn't be able to shut the mouths of other people, she could keep working hard in order to be a successful woman. She honestly believed that settling down and becoming a housewife is an outdated way of life, and the idea of having any kind of romantic relationship was the last thing that she had in her mind.

Due to her focus on becoming a woman of career, she didn't bother making friends while at the college, and while she did have a small collection of friends, she seemed to prefer studying and learning rather than socializing with other people. Even so, she became curious about certain things once in a while, like trying out alcohol, watching movies or playing video games, though she personally thought that they were nothing but small distractions. She had already planned ahead for her life, like her future profession and her own legacy. For her, everything had been set to stone, and nothing would change that.

Of course, she would indulge herself in small distractions once in a while, and it happened that a new Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, or VRMMORPG, named Sword Art Online, would be released. While not heavily invested in it, Hitomi was curious enough that she had decided to try it out. Getting herself a NerveGear™ to play the game with, Hitomi bought the game upon release, and she tried it out, exploring the system and getting herself immersed in the game. She was interested enough in the game that she thought that she might have to invest more of her time into it, but overall, she knew that it was just one simple distraction that she would have to put down eventually.

Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be. The fact that she was trapped in a video game alongside other players left her virtually catatonic for quite some time, and she spent quite some time on autopilot, still in disbelief of what was happening to her. She spent most of her time at the Town of Beginnings, trying her best to live normally within the system, but little by little, she regained the spark of life that she had lost, and eventually, she managed to build up enough confidence and courage to actually do something about her situation. She had heard about all the lives lost in their attempt to find a way out of this new world as well as about the people at the frontline, and for her to stay still and do nothing, she became ashamed of herself. Determined to decide her own fate, Hitomi, or rather, Azura, would work hard to improve herself so that she could join the frontline one day. She might be a complete novice as a gamer, but she sought to improve that.

Virtues

  1. Open-Minded. Azura knows her limitations as a novice gamer, so she considers most others to be more experienced than her, which means she is quite accepting to other people's opinions while still having an opinion of her own. She makes it her habit to consult others about what they think about certain situations, weighing in various opinions so that she can come up with a best solution to any problem that she has to encounter. She is also quite accepting to other people's quirks or eccentricities, thinking that those are the way these people are coping to their current situations, being trapped in a virtual world.
  2. Perceptive. She is quite insightful on many things, seeing things from the perspective of a layman rather than a gamer. She may become the first to notice the strangeness in certain situation, the inconsistency of things that other people may otherwise overlook or details that are well-hidden or not too obvious. She is quick to make mental notes on things that she notices that other people may fail to notice, and depending on the situation, she may point them out to others if it can benefit them. Please be noted that this may not apply to combat situation as it is mostly during social interactions outside combat.
  3. Team-Player. Fully aware of her own limitations, Azura makes it her habit to listen to what people say, making sure to be fully cooperative with others, making her a good team-player. She relies on what she can see on other players so that she can imitate them, and making sure that she is on the same page as everyone on certain things. She makes sure to not become a liability to others, as well as knowing her own role whenever she has to enter combat situation alongside other players. While this may make her a poor solo player, being a good team-player will surely increase her chance for survival.

Flaws

  1. Out of her Element. Make no mistake. Azura is probably quick on the uptake, but she is still a novice gamer who is unfamiliar with the terms and mechanics of the game she is in. While she is slowly learning, she may have to encounter a situation where she has to bumble her way and make it clear that she is a newbie. She may be left confused by the gamer slangs or terms that are usually used by gamers, and she may even misinterpret these terms, which can potentially make it embarrassing for her. While she does make sure to ask first in order to ascertain things, she cannot hide the fact that she is a complete and utter noob.
  2. Meek. Azura may have recovered from her catatonic state after she decided to join others to play the game, but the catatonia has left her a little meek, which allows people to order her around, making her a pushover. Knowing that she doesn't have much knowledge in gaming, she often puts herself down, which may give others with less-than-good intention to walk all over her. While she is wise enough to know if there are people who are trying to take advantage of her right away, she is vulnerable to those who are pretending to be good towards her while planning to take advantage of her.
  3. Melancholic. Azura is fully aware that she's not the only one suffering in this game, with every single player being subjected to the threat of dying in real life upon dying in this virtual world, but she can't help but think of her dream that she may not be able to achieve. She may end up dead in this world, unable to achieve anything, and the idea of dying without accomplishing anything truly frightens her. While she may have a newfound strength and courage to actually do something, she cannot get rid of the sadness right away, leaving her with a lot of 'what-ifs' inside her head, wondering if things might have been better if she didn't actually pick up Sword Art Online.
