[PP - F05 - PT] Where Is Home When The Heart Is Lost? <<DHA 5: Of Greed and Avarice>>

Recommended Posts

A collapsed tunnel, an abandoned nest and a missing treasure. What, did the dragon hire a U-Haul truck to move all his things out? And what's with the one lone egg? Koga shook his head, he should've known things wouldn't be this easy. The man stole a glance over at NIGHT before looking back towards Tarek. "Look, we'll help you carry the damned egg, but if that dragon tries to eat us, you're first in line," Koga said, pointing an annoyed finger at the man before walking towards the egg, wondering what the best way to carry it would be.

"Splendid," Tarek said, with a sly smile. "Well, I'll happily guide you towards the dragon's current residence, somewhere over..." Tarek paused and span in a circle a couple times, index finger in the air before stopping in what appeared to be a completely random direction, and pointing, "there!" He turned back to the players with a gleeful smile. "But, perhaps we should discuss what we'll do once we find daddy dearest?"

"We can discuss while we walk," Koga said, "come over here and help me carry this thing."

Preparations for breakfast were readied just in time for the ominous aforementioned 'tunnel collapse' to have occurred; the party of three were out on another side of the cave in time to feel the powerful shudder behind them, alongside the sinking of sand. NIGHT turned around at the noise, hands set on lifting her part of the egg up. No going back there, now.

Tarek had set up camp by a spire just a few paces away from the underground. In the shadow of their towering rock face, a cast iron pan was set up with fire, the hunter's camel looming over it to block out what wind from a sandstorm might blow. A dark green tent bundle sat idly by the shell just as the bandit had started to take a crack at it. Chisel and hammer. Their meal was open in seconds.

The man whistled looking over the fruits of their labour. "This sure could last me a while!"

Meanwhile, the players, still clueless, could only watch as Tarek bounced around his camel's luggage, looking for utensils and spices.

"As fun as getting breakfast for you is," NIGHT chided, arms folded and eyes narrowed, "The dragon we're hunting. Please."

"Oh! Of course." The make-do chef waved his hand, now holding a tiny bottle of pepper once he'd extracted it from his satchels. "Like I said, he's somewhere along that part of the desert." With a gesture, he pointed towards the middle of nowhere, helpful. "Avyss is the one you're looking for. Last I understood, the beast is making a move towards an oasis. Sure is going to suck being a traveler around those parts."

NIGHT fought the urge to question him, brow raised -- wasn't he too a wanderer of the desert? Still, she wasn't in the mood to complain; there was something about the way Tarek had busied himself in glee that prevented her from being too harsh on the NPC. At least he was making them a gift.

Rumbling and thunderous cracks of stone breaking against stone was accompanied by the shifting of sand underfoot, causing the small caravan to be dragged backwards a couple of inches, and sink into the desert less than that. Koga spared only a glance over his shoulder at the ruined cavern, before putting eyes forward once more.

Thankfully, it was not long to Tarek's camp, and the two players were able to take shelter from the warm winds and biting sand underneath the tent's canopy. Sheltered, but not happy, both players watched Tarek with narrowed eyes as he gleefully went about 'cooking'. Koga's head fell forward as Tarek pointed in a vague direction, deep into the desert, as if that was of any help at all. The oasis bit was helpful, but that was going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack. A very, very large haystack.

"Do you at least have a map to this oasis?" Koga asked, finally speaking up as the cloaked man shuffled about, sprinkling pepper across the egg's surface, and the over to his bag. Instead of a map, however, Tarek pulled out a salt shaker.

"Nope! No map!" the man proudly announced, "I got it all up here in my head!" Tarek tapped his temple with the salt shaker before proceeding to salt the egg.

"So you're telling me we're not going anywhere until after breakfast."

"Exactly."

Koga couldn't help but let out an exasperated sigh. "He better be a good fucking cook," he whispered to NIGHT, before crossing his arms in annoyance.

To NIGHT's credit, she did believe whole-heartedly in Tarek's attempt at cooking. To both players' disappointment, however, neither their hopes nor Cardinal's wishes brought them taste with their servings. The egg was runny in a way that spelled itself undercooked, and something told the woman that the time taken to process dragon egg was way different than handling any regular chicken's or duck's. With the menace finally downed, they finally had the chance to turn their attention towards the more important part of their journey.

The search for their draconic mark.

Tarek's form was in shadows, rim-lit by the light of the desert sun as they trudged through the dunes unfettered by stray storms. He was set tall upon his camel, the shade of which hid the duo from the burning heat, to which NIGHT was greatful for despite [Survival]'s aid; it was getting rather difficult to keep her eyes fully open in the hazardous terrain, and not only due to the dust kicked up on ocassion by this point.

"As I'd said before," Tarek said, gaze forward, hands loosely gripping the reins on his steed, "The way forward's all up in my head. Can't be a good excursionist in the wastes if you're going to get lost at every second turn, y'know!"

As though either of them had the energy to banter with the bandit.

The moment they'd crawled up a particularly tall dune, the aforementioned oasis was brought into sight, centered at the base of cornering mounds, a sanctuary away from the flat plains of the ocean gold. Though Tarek seemed to chuckle and lead his camel downhill for a trek, NIGHT hoped Koga would have at least shown some restraint before charging forward -- they were about to deal with a dragon, after all. Plus, in the desert, there was a possibility that it could appear anywhere, even under their feet.

"Keep your eyes peeled. --If you can."

Much to Koga's dismay, his pleas to the culinary gods were all for naught. The man stared at the undercooked egg and grimaced. "We can't get sick in-game, right?" the man asked, unsure ever since his visit to Kasumi's home. She had sure seemed awfully sick then, but that also went against all his knowledge of the game...Confusion seemed to find Koga at every turn these days.

Deciding it was better not to risk it, besides, he knew he couldn't go hungry, the swordsman tossed the contents of his plate over his shoulder, and into the sand.

Soon after, the party was moving through the sands once more. While Tarek had the benefit of riding on the back of his camel, the two players were left to trudge through the thick sands, inevitably stumbling once or twice as the fickle ground gave way unexpectedly.

Koga could hear Tarek's voice from above them, saying something or another, but the man barely heard it. He didn't care unless it was to say that they'd found their mark. Koga did, however, steal a glance over at NIGHT, and it was clear that fatigue was beginning to set it.

The sloshing of water could be heard as he thrust his canteen in front of her face. "Drink up," Koga said, "I dunno if I can fight this dragon on my own with the new system, and I sure as hell am not gonna trust Tarek to help me. I need you in the game." Clearly the exhaustion was catching up to Koga as well, his words uncharacteristically harsh. NIGHT shouldn't take it too personally though.

It was only moments later that the three crested another dune, and the oasis came into view, its crystal waters gleaming like a solitary gem among hewn stone.

"Keep your eyes peeled. --If you can."

Koga nodded wearily, before hoping into the side of the dune, beginning to slide down. It was less effort that way. But no sooner than he hit the bottom of the dune did a violent gust of wind kick sand up into his face, and a roar echoed through the blinding wall of dust.

"Well, this must be our stop." Tarek said with a sudden seriousness. "I'll say this only once. I'd prefer not to kill the beast. I'm no poacher. But I leave the decision to you two." On cue, a UI element appeared before both player with a simple prompt: Kill or Spare.

Koga looked over at NIGHT, "I'm alright with not killing the guy, but if it comes to it..."

Oh, how apt. Because the dragon was certainly in need of its own dramatic entrances -- very well, of course.

NIGHT's first response to the sudden menace was to shoot forward, lunging for the upshot of sand from the very top of the dune she had managed to stand on, just as Tarek directed his camel towards the newfound battlefield. The window popped open, verifying her causes; she'd barely heard for Koga's speech in the aftermath of Avyss' introduction, slamming on the blue circle icon assuming it to close out her distractions. No clue what it meant, although the journal indicator at the corner of her screen would drop her a hint. She'd given it a glance before the fizzle of gold started to make way for an earthy, indomitable brown.

-- And her first instinct was to slam the hilt of her weapon into it, sending a resounding crackle into its tough armored hide, plates of woven curves, bronze, gleaning under the deadly sunlight. The impact rang, force as though striking a temple bell, and yet the shatter of noise that followed afterwards was a higher pitched din than that of a monastery's wake. Almost as though there'd be a ripple through the air as she'd smashed into the great wyrm, the sandstorm halted but only for a second, before assailing the attacking party with a ferocity unseen. Protecting its homestead champion, the player might've figured, had she weren't focused on trying to settle a landing in the basin below.

Two votes for [SUBDUE]. Players will attempt to subdue Avyss in the upcoming fight.

Without hesitation, NIGHT dashed in, the only indicator of her vote being the small message notification that appeared in the corner of Koga's HUD. Right on his partner's heels, Koga followed. An explosion of sand at their feet sent Koga flying backwards, off his feet and into the sand, tumbling. The man spat the grit from his mouth as he got back to his feet and looked around. NIGHT fell back to ground nearby.

"Shit, NIGHT, you good?!" Koga called as he tightened his grip on his weapon.

As if in answer, the dragon reappeared, knocking NIGHT aside with his claws, before spinning around and slamming his long, thick tail into Koga's chest. On his back once more, the man tried to stand, only to be on the receiving end of a headbutt from the house-sized beast.

Well, this was off to a great start.

A low growl signaled the beast's momentary distraction as NIGHT thrust her weapon in the dragon's hide. Time enough for Koga to get back on his feet and deliver a blow of his own. Dashing in, he struck at the front ankle of the dragon. As he did so, the fast moving form of Tarek, still on the back of his camel went past as the man drove his spear into the beast's side.

"Be careful!" Tarek called out, "this isn't some helpless egg!"

"Yeah, no fucking shit!"

Shifting like flowing water.

Orion's Blessing opened up the flood gates of strikes once more, the tug of the system missing as her blade flared to life in an unusual yet oddly intuitive color. So, against her natural movements, she struck at the beast again -- not like it was bound to go anywhere, stuck midway through its movements, the way NIGHT had planned its immobility in battle. Almost as though a bolt from the heavens had crashed down upon it, that flare of light in prismatic hues cut into its scaled hide, causing Avyss to howl a fearsome roar.

In equal measures, the player was thrown back onto the sands by a force, kicking up dust from the dunes into air. The player coughed, getting back up on her feet; no sense staying off them in the heat of battle. She'd have to look over her cloak for any signs of gold later. For now, she readied her stance once more, knowing the enemy's liken for quick strikes again had it recovered from her art.

Although there was no response from NIGHT, Koga could see her flit about on the field, striking at the stunned, scaled beast. Koga should've figured as much. Satisfied in his partner's safety, Koga charged back in, a flurry of sand left in his wake. Circling to the beasts flank, Koga poised his blade to thrust at Avyss' rear.

"Guh!"

Before Koga could strike, he felt a forceful tightening around his throat as Tarek rode by and grabbed Koga's hood, pulling him away from the beast as he threw a dagger behind them at the dragon. Just in time too, as the dragon's massive tail whipped by before his eyes, the gale created by the attack lifting clouds of sand and obscuring Koga's vision. Well, Koga couldn't really be mad at Tarek for that one.

Still his neck was going to hurt.

As Tarek let go of Koga's hood, the man went tumbling to the ground, rolling in the sand. Coughing, and with a hand around his throat, got to his knees.

"Are you alright, friend?!" Tarek asked him as he brought his camel back around. Koga gave a thumbs up. "You must be more careful!"

--Though, even all of the preparation in the world couldn't have helped her dodge that sort of attack. The tail struck her out of seemingly nowhere, and NIGHT had reached out to grasp at some element of the dragon, hoping to hang onto it to scramble onto and over, a distance away from the rest of its area of effect. Unfortunately, that just left the woman ushered backwards even further as her feet failed to keep up with the climb. One release of fingers, and in a toss, she saw blue.

She angled herself towards a particularly soft dune-top, right before haphazardly swinging her blade towards her opponent in annoyance. They weren't meant to land, not entirely on purpose had NIGHT been pushed to answer, but misfiring be damned, for one of those slashes in a wave of light found its mark either way. The wyrm howled, its roar piercing through the soft sand causing ripples, and as soon as it had fallen, it was as though the desert was crying for it, a flurry to mark the creature's unfortunate passing.

Not that the woman was paying it any attention face-first in the dust, however.

Koga looked up just in time to see NIGHT go flying through the air like a poorly aimed catapult and Avyss roar out his last. Koga scrambled up to his and looked up in shock as the dragon reared back and the ground shook, before he crashed to the ground in a heap of flesh and scale.

The wind began to pick up as Koga stared on, mouth agape until the grainy sensation of sand forced it shut. "Well, that wasn't supposed to happen..." Koga said as Tarek dismounted his camel beside him.
"Indeed it was not...what a sorry end for the magnificent creature...: Tarek lamented.
"Eh, he'll respawn and you can give him a round two."
"Eh?"
"NIGHT!" Koga began to trudge through the sand towards his companions assumed landing zone. "You ok? I did not fall between two floors and live just for you to bite the dust from that little tiny jump!"

It had only just registered to her that they'd failed the mission objective once the interface at the corner of her eye was marked out with a strikethrough on their task. And she laid there, uncomfortably, waiting for the winds of the sandstorm to die down just as she heard Koga's rampant scampering towards her location, with orders for her to rise up from her mistake.

"Leave me here," she'd managed to muffle out, after pulling down the hood of her cloak over her head, sheltering her cavity from dust and sand alike. Still flat upon the dune, she curled up even further, regret at the forefront of her mind, with only alternatives for their approach shelved away into a corner of her waking conscious. "It's too dangerous for me to stick around monsters. They'll just perish before we even had a chance to show them mercy. Effort's futile..."

...

When the sandstorm stopped, NIGHT clambered to her feet, shaking off the visible gold specks from her being. And though all signs on her visage indicated she was fine -- more than fine, now that they were out of combat -- the look of disgust on her face spoke leagues about her emotional state, her eyes snapping to Tarek in a fit of abject annoyance.

"Okay, shorty. Now what?"

Koga wasn't sure whether or not he should pity the poor player, or burst out laughing as NIGHT wallowed in shame in her grave of sand, the storm slowly burying her. He kind of just stood there and waited, doing his best to suppress a laugh. It wasn't until a brief respite from the gravedigging storm that NIGHT finally recovered enough from her embarrassment to stand up and address Tarek.

"Well, since the poor beast is dead, we must search for his hoard on our own," Tarek says before turning around and making a show of looking around, whilst shielding his eyes from the dust. A loud cracking sound came almost immediately came from beneath their feet and Koga eye's shot downward, and then back up at NIGHT. "Oh c'mon."

The ground beneath them split open and the 3 figures plummeted down, crashing below in a clatter.

"Oh god, if I had a spleen I think I ruptured it..." Koga groaned as he rolled his face into a pile of gold.

What happened? Did Tarek search too hard? She didn't even think the ground beneath them happened to feel unstable -- or did Cardinal suddenly decide that players had weight, and somehow her fall had broken the terrain enough that they would fall right through the world again?

When NIGHT, having landed on her back, pulled herself up from her splayed position, there was only darkness from what she could see. No light pouring into their underground cavern -- because there was something tiny, warm and ridged crawling across her cheek with a squeak.

"--AAH!"

And to say that she'd batted it off was an understatement; the force of her swat was enough to punt the miniscule creature onto sand right by Koga's feet. In her vision then, she'd managed to catch the sight of Tarek attempting to scramble from the fall, too -- but her haste and panic was more so than the realization that her troubles were over.

"Get it off!!"

Stop, drop and roll. Meanwhile, the copper figure groaning in the sand raised its wings in an attempt to help it stand, dazed and confused by the sudden crash to the ground.

NIGHT's sudden screaming made Koga shoot to his feet, his sword in hand, expecting another battle with some unknown enemy. Instead, a lump of winged, scaly flesh was thrown at his feet. The little lizard rolled itself onto its feet and wiggled its body, shaking the sand and dust from it's body. "Oh, hey you," the man said, sheath his sword and leaning down to pick up the creature, his hand going beneath it's front legs. The man held the creature straight ahead of him as he examined it. "Well aren't you a cute thing." And then his eyes narrowed. Quickly, he opened up his quest log and checked this quest's objective. The man breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank god, I don't think I could commit anymore infanticide. Hey NIGHT!" Koga called, only to realize that the woman was still panicking. This time he couldn't help himself and started laughing. "NIGHT, NIGHT, chill, chill, look, it's just this cute little guy. See?"

It was only sputtering between the sand, dust and barely-registered coins. By the time Koga had gotten NIGHT to simmer down, she was wearing a scowl, hugging her cloak closer to herself. "Oh, I saw it," she returned, watching as the dragonling started to crawl up Koga's form. Behind the man, Tarek was starting to fill up a burlap sack full of treasure, and NIGHT took a moment to look over their objectives, just as her companion had done.

"Don't suppose the little beast can talk?"

A whimper back was her response. But somewhere in between her blinks of disengagement and her shifted gaze towards Tarek's excited remarks about money, jaws fished out a striped tumble gemstone from thin air, the lizard hopping onto Koga's open palms. The objective then blinked fulfilled in front of her eyes, and she registered the tiny pet scampering away, further into the reaches of the cavern from its parent's hoard.

"Huh." The woman strode over, focused on the item identified as a jasper in her friend's hand. "Another... crafting material."

Koga looked at the spot where the tiny dragonling disappeared into the dark, then at the stone in his palms, then back to the same spot as before, then back to his hands.

"Huh. Another...crafting material."

Koga looked up at his partner blankly. "You...don't suppose this is dragon-shit, do you?" he asked before transitioning to holding it with as few fingers as reasonably possible. "Well, if it is, it's some very pretty shit," Koga said without waiting for a proper response from NIGHT.

"Well...I suppose we got what we came here for...hey, Tarek! C'mon, let's go!"

The sound of Tarek laughing happily as he dove into a pile of gold was Koga's only response. "...Doesn't...doesn't that hurt?" he asked no one in particular as the gemstone disappeared into his inventory. "Whatever, let's go." Koga turned around and then realized he was looking at a stone wall. Right...they'd fallen through the cave's ceiling..."Hey, uh, NIGHT?...We can teleport out right?"
