[SP-PT-01] Zapstick Trials [BID]

He'd been grinding since his very first outing from the Town of Beginnings, going all the way back to that laughably epic duel between his low level self and the titanic beast he'd dubbed as Bacon Bits.  Never, in all the many grind runs since, had he ever bothered to attempt such an effort with a weapon of the type he now held in his hands.  First was its unusual form.  Existing as some sort of charged plasma that hovered around and between both of his hands, it seemed to react to intent.  Whenever he willed it to solidify, it did so, with surprising ease  and quickness. 

The second and more technically relevant reason was that it carried the absolute accuracy property.  Every veteran he'd ever heard of who specialized in grinding favoured the use of  such weapons when wading through endless ranks of mobs for loot.  NIGHT, Raidou, and Oscar each had their own versions.  ChaseR likely did as well.  It was time for Freyd to discover what all the hubbub was about.

Wide red eyes replayed memories of Tempest as a startled group of ratty kobolds faced the first wave of his assault and descent into the depths of the Black Iron Dungeon.  Their yipped with fright and spasmed awkwardly as the weapon bit deep with its blackened discharge that lanced from one target to the next.  There expressions were nearly comical as the mobs struggled to regain their senses and respond to the unexpected attack.  The goal, of course, was never to provide them with the opportunity.  It had been ages since he'd taken this approach.

"Heh," he snorted, "Orion's gifts make quite a pairing with this thing."  Tightening his hands into fists called forth the cold, crackling rod, eager to press the advantage and take these enemies down.  There were plenty more already lining up behind them.  A wide swing and spin kept the reinforcement at bay while he focused on the initial group.

"Montjoy, if you'd please.  Keep them occupied for a moment while I finish these off."

His shadow nodded and detached, splitting into multiple copies and sewing chaos throughout the gaggle of additional draconic pygmies.  Persi stirred beneath his armor and slinked out to see what was going on.  Stretching out in a feline manner, she even licked her starfield patterned paw for a moment before gleefully joining the fray at Montjoy's side.  Unlike the shadow, however, her attacks were far more real and devastating in their impact.

Content that his companions had the new arrivals in hand, Freyd focused on mopping the floor with the first group he'd set himself upon.  They never got the chance to recover.  Dark lighting crackled once more and the lot of them were shattered by the flurry that followed.

"I think I'm starting to see the appeal."  A grin formed beneath the cowl.  This was a game changer.

The second group of kobolds were already in disarray, chasing copies of the player they'd just spotted that seemed to be everywhere around them all at once.  The entire troop had turned away from his actual position by the time Freyd actually arrived, unleashing the same electric devastation that had led to the decimation of their predecessors.  Darkness swirled all around them as the Whisper reached out with the miasma in his hands, manifesting it inside one foe, then slamming its congealed form into the rest.  Awkward, reptilian barks and squawks filled the air, most of them cut short by the effects of the sword art that engulfed the pack.  Montjoy and his shadow legion we already intercepting additional adds as they converged on the sounds of battle.  They couldn't do any actual damage, but excelled at delaying the new arrivals, all while directed by Freyd's will.  He, meanwhile, stood at the centre of the maelstrom and directed the storm.

"Herd them."  Acting like shepherd dogs, his shades corralled their foes into manageable clusters.  If any one mob thought itself brave enough to advance, Persi would make an appearance and stun them into a sudden stupor, buying Freyd more time to manage the overall battle. 

Reaching out to two nearby mobs, he bridged a connection between them with his weapon, arcing additional death to another pair beyond.

"I'm really starting to like this thing."  Samael's Pride's power was unsurpassed, but this tool matched his mindset more effectively.  It was a tactical weapon that would enable him to control the field of battle in a way that denied his opponents even the opportunity to attack.  The kobolds silently agreed, twitching and struggling to keep hold of their weapons, unable to effect any meaningful threat against him.

"This is our kill zone.  Anything that moves in to challenge us gets halted at the perimeter, then filtered through in manageable numbers to be melted down."

Understood, and effective.  Why did it you take so long to discover this?

Some of the newer arrivals were wearing slightly modified gear, compared to the first groups.  Their colours and war paint marked them as part of another tribe.

"We may have stirred up the hornet's nest," Freyd commented to no one in particular.  Persi didn't speak and Montjoy would likely just berate him for stating the obvious.  It didn't matter.  Combat had suddenly become a game of chess rather than chance.  Already, the machine mind within his head was processing scenarios and battle plans, optimizing options for how to most effectively manage his foes and turn them into star dust.  Another group closed in, only to be stunned by a morass of whirling black death in the occasional form of a stick, wielded by a shadow that danced beyond the edge of their perceptions.  Freyd was in his element: a shadow in a cage of shadows that consumed all that foolishly encroached.  

Stepping between copies of himself, he reveled in the orchestration of actions required to establish the scene.  There was a strange harmony about it, even as blackish blue wisps of nothingness swirled at their feet and choked the breath out of his enemies.  It felt fun.

Delving deeper, the Whisper changed his form slightly, stooping into a hunch and cladding himself in the guise of his foes.  Tumbling left to break line of sight with any would-be assailants, he reappeared on the far side of the pack and brought them down with lethal efficiency.  The lights cast by their demise masked his next move as he waded to the back of a distant gaggle of new arrivals, only to unleash fresh devastation on the unsuspecting mobs.  Soon he was flitting about, moving between copies of himself in a bewildering series of leaps and unnatural jumps that made it seem like he could step between or even through his other selves.  The poor kobolds were at a total loss to determine whatever had been set against them.  It seemed to be coming at them from all directions at once.  Their leaders barked confusing orders while their followers couldn't make sense of their intentions.  

A cackle echoed in the back of Freyd's mind, even as a small smile graced his false reptilian face.  He had done it: become a legion of one.  Now it was just a matter of testing his own resilience and seeing how long his resources would hold.

"Pull in the left flank.  Allow those two groups to merge.  Let's see whether Cardinal has given them enough personality to hate each other, as well as us."

Sure enough, the two distinctly branded groups did not get along at all.  As soon as elbow bumped, claws flew and blades followed.  Freyd was satisfied in knowing that they could be turned against each other, even if only momentarily.  There were no fatalities from the clash, but it bought him valuable time to deal with another gang.  Persi was preoccupied with a third and could not effectively manage both.

A strange logistical dance was occurring all around him, kept in equilibrium by attentive precision.  Even as the sizzle and cracking of frostburnt flesh carried about him, Freyd was as the spider in a web of his own weaving.  Tugging at tools like threads only when and as required, he cast the tapestry of the battlefield and directed its elements.  And, kobolds fell in droves as a result.

Another wave fell and Freyd spotted a cluster of ad-hoc structures cobbled together in the background.  Could these creatures actually have settlements within the dungeon?  Or were they nothing more than generic spawn points?  His curiosity was piqued and soon after the legion was pushing their enemies back towards that destination.  Carving through seemingly endless numbers of mobs, Freyd forced his way towards the dark tunnel he had seen.  Sparing glances were all he could manage as the combat raged all around him, but it was fascinating nonetheless.  

Crude huts made of salvaged supplied dotted the side of the passage.  Scratch marks on the walls signified attempts to burrow that had clearly failed.  They lacked tools, though the fact that they had the instincts to do so was remarkable to begin with.  His mere approach was enough to send the kobolds from this particular site into a group frenzy, determined to keep the human invader from their homes.  He could hardly blame them.  His whole reason for being here was to kill them and take their stuff.

Leaping between shadows, Freyd was soon behind their lines and laying waste to the their more senior veterans - those left behind to guard the chief, women and children.  The latter were a complete surprise.  Was Cardinal just messing with him?  Normally, mobs just spawned for the express purpose of existing to fight.  They had no homes, no families, and no purpose for existence other than to die by players' hands.  If this was not the case.  If they were indeed capable of some basic level of civilization, then his entire perspective on the game would to shift.

Remember the Sundered Spire.

Montjoy's words of warning carried truth.  He had a knack for hitting issued at their crux.  It was easy to fall into compassion based on some romantic notion of sympathy for an imagined plight.  Cardinal and Kayaba had both demonstrated their willingness to manipulate players using these traits.  And damage dealt by a child could be as lethal as from Cerberus himself.  

They're just skins over a system.

Freyd ultimately chose to ignore the potential throng of social scientists that might be watching their little scenario play out through a digital screen.  For people stuck in the game, this was all the real they had.  They were stuck with it, and forced to make the most of it.  Consequences were a luxury that they couldn't always consider, especially over the long term.  And so he did what was required.  Wading through the swarm like a plague, death followed in his wake.  He avoided those that required out-of-the-way travel, but mowed down those foolish enough to stand in his way as he made a bee-line for the chief.

Guards sought to stop him.  He vanished between them only to appear behind and continue his advance.  The kobold boss looked no different than the rest, save for a slightly shinier helmet on its head.  I also died just as fast as all the rest.

The death of their leader enraged the remainder of the tribe, even as half of them also sought to flee from the battle.  Kobold courage was a fickle thing.  Freyd ran back into the melee, thrashing various mobs as they wandered across his path.  New groups were still pouring in from side tunnels, but their numbers were dwindling.  Their ranks were clearly finite and reaching the point of depletion.  He simply needed to exhaust them before his own reserves ran out, though they'd held up remarkably well so far.

A well-placed swing disintegrated a flimsy but critical support for the little dragon-dog creatures' home.  Precarious groaning quickly became a full-fledged collapse and buried several dozen of them beneath a landslide of rubble.  Muffled yips and yaps could still be heard from under the field of debris. Freyd took the opportunity to get clear of the tribe's territory.  They were no threat and rescuing them just to put them down seemed both a waste of effort and an act of cruelty.

Agreed.  I will scout ahead while the others fluster the flanks.

True to his word, Freyd's shadow returned a minute later.  Less than a dozen foes remained to block their escape, and they were in disarray.  The Whisper ricochet between them like a pinball electrified by dark energy, consuming each foe then lancing out to catch the next.  A few tried to organize resistance, but failed miserably.  Their efforts only hastened their own demise, which suited Freyd just fine.  Standing amidst the crackling and popping remains of another pair of fallen mobs, he began to recognize their surroundings as on of the points of access to the level above.  It wouldn't take long to get clear, if they managed to keep up their current pace.

Behind you!

Freyd whirled, bringing his weapon into a high cross guard out of pure instinct and catch a pair of kobold axes in the process.   Two of their warriors had sought to catch him by surprise, only to fail.  Deflecting their blows, Freyd spun his staff and severed one of their limbs with a timely screeching as the seals pulled back for just a moment.  They snapped back into force with such power that his next blow sent another assailant flying through the air, only to crumple harshly against the far tunnel wall.  Black lightning crackled between his enemies, incapacitating the lot and leaving them exposed to counterattacks, which Freyd would gladly deliver.

Grabbing one of the smaller paralyzed creatures, he tossed it like a bowling ball, knocking two of its companions to the ground and laying them all prone for added vulnerability.  Trailing a faint miasmic cloud, his approach signaled their imminent deaths, and one more step towards completing his goals.

A squad of four sought to ambush him by leaping out of the shadows.  It proved to be a fatal mistake.  The first was immediately pummeled into the ground with a quick downward strike and exploded into a burst of light that momentarily blinded the rest and obscured Freyd from their line of sight.  Things got worse for them from there.  Lunging through the fading particles of their brother, the other three found no purchase.  Turning to place their backs together, not one of them thought to look up.  Freyd fell between them, his blow setting off a bomb in their midst that sent them all sprawling in separate directions.  One crumpled against the wall, never to recover.  The second rolled and nearly managed to regain his footing before Freyd snagged him by his bootstraps and flung him against the last, both of them popping like a pair of colliding pinatas while the Whisper resumed his original course.

"So, you're it, are you?  The last line?  Good luck, boys.  This hasn't gone so well for your fellows."  Freyd spun his staff before him, which was more of an intimidation tool than an actual combat trick.  As he did so, an inky black substance slunk over his form from behind and cloaked him in the blackness of the void.    It was Montjoy, playing another of his parlour tricks and harnessing the enemies' attentions on himself.  Freyd had already sidestepped onto their flank and unleashed a furious barrage of blows that left them broken and battered before they even knew what had hit them.

Before them, the shadow waved and flickering, fading into nothingness then reappearing at his master's feet.  Sparing a moment to gaze upon the stone archway, he dared not dwell lest his foes recover too quickly and start getting ideas.  Aincrad's self-declared janitor still had some mopping up to do.

It didn't take an awful lot of effort to finish the job, which was a good thing.  Freyd didn't actually have much fuel left in his own tank after such an extensive romp.  Even as the final, fractal dregs of his opponents drifted to the floor and vanished, he leaned lightly against his staff and pressed his head against it.  The thrum and vibration emanating from it instantly reminded him that it was his primary reason for having delved down here in the first place.

"Not half bad, eh, Montjoy?  I should have used something like this ages ago."

You're too stubborn to have tried it before now.

Freyd glared back at his shadow, prepared to snipe back and deny the allegation.  An entire tirade booted up in the back of his mind, until he remembered the new weapon's name - the very one he had chosen for it:  The Thing Behind All Lies.

He had no choice but to acknowledge it: truth.  As insidiously annoying as Montjoy could be, he was both blessed and cursed with the gift of brutal honestly. He couldn't even recall when the figure had first manifest, or if he had simply always been there.  

"No wonder no one else can hear you.  You're not here for them."  Freyd grimaced at the declaration.  Was he truly so unhinged that he could speak truth to himself?  The arrogance of it was staggering, yet equally appealing.  Whether a glitch of the system, a fracture in his soul, or the amalgam of the proverbial devil and angel that should be sitting on his shoulders, Montjoy was his guide - his herald to knowing himself.  Freyd nodded.

"Once more unto the breach, dear friend, once more..." he let the quote hang, knowing the Montjoy would get the reference.  He was named in affiliation to it.

Always, but remember: only Janus knows what goes before and aft.  But he who knows and has felled his demons and a hundredfold their brethren surely cannot help but seek what lies beyond that door.  Be wary and wrathful.  Be keen and blind.  Be fury and peace all at once.  Be the line that sits between the darkness and the light, and dares to challenge both, like the one that sits before us.”

Once again, Freyd was looking at himself.

Emerging from the Black Iron Dungeon back onto the bustling streets of the Town of Beginnings was always a bit jarring.  Freyd had gone in looking for treasure and found an unexpected degree of peace of mind, along with an absolutely boat-load of treasure.

"Thank goodness for extradimensional storage," he said aloud, grateful that this wasn't one of those ridiculous games that sought to restrict player engagement by enforcing weight constraints.  It was going to take a week just to sort everything out, then get started on identifying it all.  A recent spike in guild activity following another recent systems patch meant increased demand for gear.  Firm Anima also gained in public popularity whenever such trends followed.  Few others had sufficient output to keep up with the demand.

Making his way to the central teleportation plaza, he called out his destination and was soon in the familiar streetscapes of Angel Point.

Dingo was right where he'd expected: lounging in his elevated hammock and doing not much of anything that had been left for him.  Freyd poked one of the tethered ends with his Pride and caused it to collapse, dumping the boy to the floor.  His snoring ended abruptly, with a yelp and a clamor of crashing flotsam from various piles of items and tools.  

"Good morning, Dingo.  How are you on this fine day?"

"Oww.  Did you have to be so Quip about waking me?"

Freyd chuckled as he started summoning his haul onto the tables in the workshop.

"Speaking of which, I didn't see your sister out front.  Is she over at Quaestor's?"

"Uhhhh..."

Dingo's hesitation to answer was rarely a good sign.

"Come on.  Spit it out."

"She's gone back to the Town of Beginnings to take on the First Lessons."  Freyd's hand paused as he put down some unidentified trinket.  A smile crept across his face.

"It's about time."
