[PT|PP|F23] Checking Out

Chase decided it might be best to revisit even the older floors. He'd taken a relative break since Cardinal gave them the shaft by completely changing every single system they knew thus far, leaving him almost paralyzed with confusion and better off in his house, playing with Blizz and doing absolutely nothing for a good while. He wasn't sure how long had passed, but it was a while.

Chase DBP Default.pngAnd now, standing back on the 23rd Floor, looking around the fields on the Underdark. He knew that the last person he wanted to hang out with was Freyd just because of sourness from his bad past experiences, but he was one of the more knowledgable players. And so, a personal message was sent to him, pretty prompt and to the point. "I want to explore F23. Come.". Nothing much to be said. He'd heard rumors about field bosses that would be worth looking, and the changes also probably stretched all the way to the sub-dungeons which were now named differently. Just... dungeons, it seems.

Freyd smirked at the message.  The curtness of it was typical, but simply receiving the summons at all was a good sign.  He knew the underdark surrounding Kalanaes all too well.  If ChaseR was looking for bosses or dungeons, it would take little effort to guide him.  Snaring a series of consumables, his fingers lingered over one in particular.  It had been earned on the very floor to which he was called.  Yes.  The irony was too dramatic to ignore.  Popping the stopper from the vial with his thumb, he downed it without another thought.  Hopefully, it didn't aggravate his edge in a manner that rubbed ChaseR the wrong wall.  Already, his blood was throbbing through his temples, threatening to fall into adrenaline-driven rage.  It took a moment to close his eyes and re-center himself.

Teleporting to Kalanaes was simple.  Donning a common dark elf appearance enabled him to pass swiftly from the streets into the open caverns.  Freyd's gear was practically native to the underdark, by design, and drew no attention from the locals.  He even managed some facility with their speech patterns and mannerisms.  Repeated exposure tended to do that.

"Here."  It seemed a suitable reply to the manner of ChaseR's calling.  The face and red eyes would be familiar, but charcoal-coloured skin and white hair might throw him off a bit.  Freyd watched and waited to see how blue boi would respond.

Chase didn't feel the need to turn his shoulder and check if it was Freyd or not, at least not right away. When he did turn and open his mouth though, he quickly put one of his hands on his sword's hilt and glared at him, as his expression started becoming less of a glare and more of a disappointed look. "... What in the mother of fuck did you do to yourself.", he asked bluntly, feeling annoyed. Then again, it was at himself for getting startled.

Chase DBP Guilty Silent.pngHe quickly tried to shake it off, opening up his menu and sending a party invite to Freyd, groaning and scratching the back of his head as he looked back out into the fields down in the caves. "There's a trol or whatever you call them somewhere. Field boss? And there's dungeons. I want to try them out. See if Cardinal did some good this time.", he explained the situation as laconically as possible (not much) and pocketed both of his hands. It was going to be a bit hard to look around this floor considering he didn't have a glowstone on himself, but he had no doubt he would fare just fine.

"Nothing fancy," Freyd replied.  "So many of us choose Concentration when facing our Geminis.  Few have truly explored the potential of the other option.  His false visage melted away, returning him to his default appearance.  "It has particular uses is less than friendly territory.  Now, our best bets for grinding around here would be Ugzeke.  I know his travelled routes well and have hunted him down a half dozen times since Shadow fell, but not since this latest update.  Having two of us tackle him should make things easy." 

Freyd bent low and picked up two loose stones, flinging them into the darkness.  Two seconds passed, followed by a series of clatters.  An instant later, light glimmered and grew across a series of crystalline formations lining the cavern walls and ceiling.

"When you spend enough time in these places, you pick up a few tricks.  So far as dungeons go, just keep your eyes open.  They're hidden everywhere around here.  I'm stumbled into many in the past."  A roar echoed in the distance to the west.  "That would be our quarry.  He's about as subtle as a flaming bag of cats.  Come on.  We can catch him from high ground, if we hurry."

It didn't take them long.  Freyd knew most of the terrain well and was able to navigate them to a proper vantage point within minutes.  No discussion seemed necessary.  They both knew how the other fought and how to tackle a behemoth when they saw one.  Without a word, Freyd leapt over the edge and came crashing down on the unsuspecting troll with the power of an umbral meteor.

So that's what it was, he just used Disguise. That sent Chase back on a trip down memory lane for the nightmares he had trying to figure out what was up with NIGHT, when he realised that he could use Disguise to take the form of the rogue fighting alongside him right now.

Chase DBP Default.pngEven he, who had Disguise, couldn't really use the move properly. He forgot to activate it at most times, and he never used it outside of any combat encounters because he thought one could only take the appearance of players. Useful things to keep in mind, especially now that its effect had been slightly improved, as had Concentration's. More things to correct in his database, hooray... But for now, the green hulk before them. Chase followed up after Freyd's attack, slamming his sword right on the troll's head. Not the brightest idea, seeing as it picked up wind of the both of them and threw its fist at the vanguard and the tank. With a single swing, he dealt a fair bit to the two, although Freyd not as much. What was he packing under the armor even?? "He's very beefy, what the hell?"

Havin slid down the thick hide of the troll's back and tumbled to regain his footing on the ground, Freyd managed to keep upright when the troll responded to ChaseR's follow up.  

"Yeah, he's got some meat on him, but he's also dumb as a post.  Just keep wailing on him and he'll come crashing down quickly.  If I can do this solo, we should have no trouble between us."

Whirling with outstretched arms, Freyd spun and connected his staff with Ugzeke's left kneecap.  A shower of sparks and fractals followed as the force of the blow crumpled the mob's mesh and dug deep to expose a nasty crevice of broken orange.  The titanic troll groaned and stumbled forward, barely catching himself before perforating his face on a series of sharp stalactites that littered the cavern floor. 

"Too bad," Freyd muttered.  "That worked pretty well last time."  Falling back into shadow, once more, he maneuvered around for a better vantage and to line up another assault.

Jesus christ, someone was going balls to the walls with the violence this time around. When simple hits were enough to do the trick, Freyd seemed to appreciate busting a kneecap or snapping someone's neck just a tad bit more. "The point is to kill the thing, not put it in a wheelchair."

Chase DBP Awkward Silent.pngAs long as damage was being dealt though, that was fine. He ran up to the monster again and slashed it while making his way behind it, before going back to the front with another sideways slash. He wasn't dealing anywhere nearly as much damage as Freyd was, but that was due to a lack of holy procs and being less into the swing of things... right? The colossus tried to hit the boy, but he ended up punching the air either because of blue circling him like a mosquito, or because he moved at a snail's pace in the first place. "He's as slow as he was last time..."

'Kill the thing?'  Freyd thought to himself, furrowing his brow while registering ChaseR's words.

"Uh... okay then.  Guess I'll have to dial it up a notch."  

Leaping up the slick stone ridges that surrounded the passage, Freyd left shadow copies of himself like contrails as the traveled, each one turning to face Ugzeke in a common combat pose.  As soon as he completed his circle, their collective cowls turned in unison and raised their staves overhead while leaping towards the troll at their center.  From their impact came an overwhelming pulse of light that fractured every portion of the mob's mesh, shattering it into multiple thousands of tiny motes and scattering them in a wave that rushed outwards for hundreds of feet in every direction.

When the dust and light settled, all that remained was a simple black-clad figure standing at the epicentre, his head cocked slightly to the side.

"Was that better?"

Chase let out a deep, long sigh. Of course he'd kill it in a single hit because why wouldn't he. At least he didn't go straight for busting a kneecap this time around, that part was a lot better (and less violent). "Dead is dead, that's good enough.", he commented and looked around, unsure what exactly they were going for next. Hell, under the assumption it was probably a dungeon, he activated his searching skill and decided to try spotting any nearby.

Chase DBP Searching.pngWith a blink, his eyes' colors had changed and everything in his vision looked just a tiny bit greener. The first attempt at using the skill in 3.0 and it was already looking weird- it didn't just increase his luck anymore. He thought he was starting to see some sort of track though, now that his vision was slightly altered. Could this be it? The tracks looked like they were made by some creature with three toes, leading up to an almost... pyramid like structure, obstructed by quite the foliage- vines and what have you. As he disabled his skill, he gestured Freyd to come along and stood out of its entrance. Inside, grunts could be heard as humanoid monsters (unbeknownst to the two, for now) dragged their legs around, patrolling the dim and damp room. With spears in their hands poorly put together, they groaned and shook their backs from time to time, spreading spores from their fungus-invested bodies. Some form of mushroom creatures, and the environment couldn't be better suited to host them, a cave. Excellent.

Freyd covered his concealed face in a vain attempt to negate the stench. 

"You sure know how to pick'em, ChaseR. Nice work, though.  Let's see if clearing them out gets rid of the smell."  Two of the fungal creatures fell rapidly, but in so doing spread such a cloud of spores that they choked out the air.  The smells got worse and Freyd missed his mark, not once but twice, to his own great consternation.  "Sorry pal.  Looks like I left a few for you this time.  I'll try to be more considerate in the future."

His eyes smiled even as tears flowed from them, trying to wash out the damnable haze that irritated them to no end.  Moving back a few feet to give space to his companion, he also stole a few gasps of fresher air from outside the cave before heading back in to help.

"I hope the next wave doesn't intensify the odour, or we'll be in real trouble."

It was almost as if something awoke in Chase when he started to chuckle and even laugh loudly with Freyd's troubled breathing and coughing, finding it comical. This guy, who was an absolute hardass with everything was having a hard time breathing in here? Most unfitting, if you were to ask blue. "Didn't know asthma carried into the game.", he joked, seeming completely unbothered by the smell.

Chase DBP Happy.pngHe charged right in (sadly not literally, otherwise there might have even been a different outcome entirely) and slashed at the monsters, causing more spores to fill the room to Freyd's probable dismay. How he wasn't completely annoyed by the vile stench was unknown until he opened his mouth, once he'd dodged the attack from the foes' polearms with grace. "This is a really weak smell. You should check the locker rooms at school.". Whether it was a joke or not was unclear by the tone alone, but he didn't seem to be gagging all the same. Probably an experience best left at a brief mention and nothing more than that. "Blade's dulled or something. Go get them, weak lungs.", he said and laughed almost wholeheartedly, something Freyd had probably- no, definitely, never seen from him before.

Freyd wandered back into the cave, looking paler than usual, his shoulders drooping slightly.  Something pasty stained one side of his right sleeve, looking like it had also been wiped against the rocky surface of the cave exterior.

"I swear that Cardinal toggles the settings on these thing arbitrarily," he muttered, struggling to produce a feint smile from behind sallow eyes.  A casual flip of his arm snapped his staff against the nearer fungal thing, the piercing screech of sudden vacuuming void filling the room as the mob disintegrated and was consumed by the weapon.  Freyd looked glad that the thing had been sucked up, denying it the chance to spread more spores throughout the chamber.  A second, far less forceful strike still sufficed to snuff the last of them, though this one spewed it spores during its dying spurts.

Freyd licked his teeth and spat in the corner, trying to clear the taste of shroom-folk out of his mouth.

"Ye, ye... laugh it up, blue boi.  We all have our moments."  It was a weak defense, but also delivered with an upward turn at the edge of his lips.  Despite appearances to the contrary, the Whisper was well aware of his own foibles and the perils of random misfortune.  Sometimes, the only option was to laugh them aside.

Not too far back, groans could be heard as two more, larger Myconids approached from the distance. One was holding a staff with what seemed like crystals attached to it, glowing ever so faintly, while the other held a sharpened halberd, ready to run it through anything in its path- two humans in particular, as of right now. "The pinky and the brain.", he joked lowly, having let his guard down now that he got to throw a couple shots back at Freyd.

Chase DBP Surprised.pngThe one that seemed more so like a mage shook its body, letting spores spread before they began to glow the same violet color as the crystals, homing in on bluehead. Before he could get hit, he made sure to charge the same way the physically bulkier of Myconids seemed to be running the two down, slashing it and getting hit by the halberd right on the thigh. If they could feel pain, holy fuck he'd be dead by now. Managing to keep the sprint up for a little while longer, he made his way to the Caster and slashed at his staff, hoping to break it but nothing. With a quick slice to its face, he dealt damage before the projectiles splashed on his back, causing a small explosion to happen and chipping at his health considerably. Almost down to half after taking just two attacks, jesus christ. "Asthmatic, give me a hand before I pass away.", he almost demanded without mustering much a good mood for jokes, looking back at Freyd warily.

A turn to make ready for another attack, following a streak of taunting blue that snarked as it went by.  If it made ChaseR happy, so be it.  Freyd's pride was virtually non-existent, and a year of repetitive face-planting at Cardinal's whim had stomped out any other dregs that might have survived.  Flashes of steel strange crystalline magics precipitated a drastic drop in his companion's health.  Nearly yellow.  Nearly.  His methodical, machine brain took over, hyper-analyzing the scene and all its variables in an instant, setting forth a path of action and destruction.  Things had very suddenly become too real.

Damned EVA tanks think they're invincible, until this happens.

Not now, Montjoy.

The curt command quieted his mouthy conscience.  An ally was in danger.  A friend?  Maybe.  Freyd was trying his best, and would not let a pair of third rate mobs drive a wedge in the form of death between him and his efforts.  Rushing after ChaseR, he closed first on the Vanguard.  A twist of his wrist snared the mob's halberd between axehead and pike, driving it forcefully down into the ground.  Planting the same end hard against the floor, Freyd vaulted high and threw a vicious kick at the thing's torso, staggering it back and separating it from its weapon.  A wheelhouse spin brought the staff screeching around in his wake, open to the void.  It carved a trench through the vanguard's chest nearly a foot deep - far more than it could ever sustain.  Its mesh collapsed and was promptly swallowed the weapon even as its bearer made a bead for their other foe. 

A swift and early lunge stabbed through its head.  Most creatures underestimated the reach of an expertly wielded stick.  The second mob exploded less dramatically, but its fragments hung around long enough to dissipate as they hit the ground.  Red eyes scanned their surroundings with the cold efficiency of a practiced killing machine.  Was that what he'd become?  Was it a good or a bad thing?  

Maybe they are right to fear me?

Once the fight was over, Chase could feel the ground rumbling and shaking further out the back. He didn't seem interested in proceeding just yet though, quietly sheathing his sword and putting all his weight on his knees, resting for a moment. "I'm alive. Just give me a minute.", he huffed and tried to catch his breath again, having gotten a sudden rush of adrenaline from the sheer health drop. What the fuck was really wrong with this game by now?

Chase DBP Guilty Silent.pngEven after such a fight, he almost reached his half point by a single mistake- no, it wasn't even in his control. The attacks both hit him because the mobs were strong, not because he was weak. And there's little room for progression with how the game changed. Even if it hadn't, he was almost max level, so there'd be no room for further progression again. Looking for excuses then. Fuck. "... Were dungeons always this much of an absolute pain?", he asked and looked back at Freyd, his glance having gotten as neutral and almost angered (less at him and more so at Kayaba's questionable design methods). "I think I can keep going. It's just the boss and then we're done. Right?"

"Ummm.  Kinda?"  Freyd's arm reached up and scratched awkwardly at the back of his cowl.  

"I fell between floors a few times, a while back and met some rather nasty glitched mobs.  They hit hard; roughly equivalent to what those two just did.  I know how much fun it isn't."  Summoning an inventory UI, Freyd started scrolling through for healing items.  "You want something to help with that?"  ChaseR just waved him off.  

"Alright.  Suit yourself."  The Whisper shrugged, accepting that there was no point in arguing.  His companion knew his limits and what risks he was prepared to accept.  

"The boss can't be far.  They're rarely distant from the previous-"  Seismic rumbling shook the cavern all around them, heaving the floor up beneath their feet.  Its spongy surface grumbled and groaned, then started lifting of its own accord.  "Awww shit.  I think we found it."  A massive myconid, twenty feet wide and nearly twice as tall, slowly rose from under their feet, forcing both players to scatter as it strove to crush them against the ceiling with its broad, flat head.  Skittering to a stop a few dozen feet away, Freyd wheeled and rushed straight back at it the moment its face was exposed, hoping to catch it off guard before it fully emerged.  The tactic worked, smashing an gigantic chunk of its body off with a wide strike, causing the creature to tumble forward off balance while its health dropped to red in one shot.  

"Stun it!  Quick!  And we can wrap this up neatly before it can properly react!"

On the note of 'glitched' monsters, Chase gave Freyd a suspicious look. Glitches? In Sword Art Online? Putting aside the impossibility of that happening, it coming from Freyd was even more dubious. Regardless, he wasn't going to start an argument just after having his ass saved. And so came the mushroom, right before them, forcing one to go right and the other to go left. Fuck. Now that the two were split up, Chase was beginning to get worried before the rogue literally cut its health to a fourth if not less, getting a grunt out of the boy.

Chase DBP Silent.pngHe approached the boss and turned his sword, slamming his pommel into its sides (or what presumably would be its sides) and getting it to hack out some spores, just strengthening the stench that even red eyes should have gotten used to by now. "No damage, damn.", he groaned an distanced himself, knowing he'd immobilized it for now but alone he could do near no harm to the monster. This was getting frustrating. Ever since this update, time and time again it felt like he couldn't ever see things through on his own and just kept on relying on Freyd and whoever else was in his party to just... carry him on their backs. Most bothersome. "Kill it off if you can.", he requested somewhat miffed, looking to the side and already beginning to lower his guard. He knew it was as good as dead with this guy nearby.

"On it."  Freyd heard his companion's request from the far side of the mob, which seemed intent on staring blankly at the cave wall with its beady black eyes, each the size of bowling balls.  The only conclusion could be that ChaseR had done as he'd requested.  A flurry of blows followed as Freyd unleashed on the staggered mob, just as it started recovering.  Repeated strikes to the same points on its gigantic from soon fractured and broke the mesh.  The mob exploded moments later, raining down shards all over the cavern and providing a bit of fleeting illumination.

"At least this time there were no spores.  How are you holding up?  Those last two took quite the clip out of you, but it looks like you can still hold your own pretty solidly in a fight."  The Whisper's cowl tilted, reading something in ChaseR's face that he couldn't quite process.  Frustration, he could understand, but the mixture of emotions that often roiled behind the man's reactions were more difficult.  This was still virgin territory for him, and events since the aftermath of the floor boss had hardly helped.

A deep sigh left Chase's mouth. There wasn't any lashing at Freyd or trying to start fires, but he gave him a miffed glance and then looked at where the boss would be, were it still alive. "You killed all eight. Field boss, the mobs and the dungeon boss.", he stated, although it sounded more like a complaint. Dead was good obviously, so that wasn't what was bothering him. And so, he turned back to Freyd with a hand resting on his sheathed blade's hilt.

One hit and you'd be down for the count if we were to fight.", he muttered and then looked down at his own sword, tightening his grip on it. "But you keep outperforming me in everything since the floor boss.", Chase huffed and began to head to the exit silently. He didn't seem to care for his health any as much as he did about the fact he'd stagnated in terms of progress. Surely he didn't put it in the best of ways, but Freyd would understand probably. "I'm calling it a day.", he said and raised a hand to wave back at him, not turning his head over his shoulder to look. This wasn't as much a 'Freyd problem' as it was a 'Chase problem'. It just happened to be Freyd and not Alkor, NIGHT or anyone else he knew. "..."

Listening as his companion voiced frustrations, his own voice said nothing.   His face wore no expression.  There was no reaction.  Freyd knew better than to engage ChaseR while he was in one of his moods.  The boy wouldn't hear him anyway.  Time had proven it over and over again.  His boasts revealed his weaknesses.  Nothing would be gained by pointing them out and rubbing his pride in them.

Insecure.  Fragile.  Broken.  Sad.

Montjoy's words held truth, though only Freyd could hear them.  His shadow hovered beside him, standing independently, echoing his master's thoughts.  Freyd could not deny them.  It was Montjoy's function to herald that which he must hear, even when unwanted; especially then.  Normally, he would turn and move on to his next task, self-appointed or by circumstance.  The Whisper was Aincrad's janitor, or so he told himself.  Cleaning up one mess after another, sometimes including those of his own making.  A boot froze, mid-pivot.  A thought entered that might never otherwise have.  Consideration was given, without request.  The cowl turned back towards the departed, and fingers moved with slow but deliberate purpose.

Holding a dull black stone with its glossy surface, Freyd saw his face as if fractured upon its surface. His own broken soul revealed.  A matter for another day.  Placing it upon the message frame, the shard attached itself and sped to his companion.

Why did you do that?

Red eyes gazed backwards a moment longer, starting at emptiness.  The foot finished its pivot and he resumed his course.

He needed to hear it.
