[SP-PT-F26] When Everyone is Crooked, Tilt Your Head

The novelty of discovering a new floor had never fully faded in Freyd mind.  He'd started out so late, compared to others, that even those that had long since been opened to others seemed to waft with what he could only think to describe as 'new floor smell.'  For twenty-six, that meant a mixture of vast wealth, debauchery and corruption.  It smelled like what he imagined revolutionary France might have, a few centuries before, save with the addition of air ships.

Those immediately caught his attention.  Like so many others, he'd always been fascinated by the concept.  Practical or not, there was a certain romantic aspect that appealed to the heart.  His was a more technical appreciation.  The magic of denying gravity and human aspiration to exceed their limitations made a far greater impact on him than any emotional appeal.  These devices broke the rules, or at least redefined them.  That always caught his interest.

Wandering the city revealed about what he'd surmised upon arrival.  This place was a nest of vipers with everyone else acting as pawns to their schemes and ambitions.  Every tier of this striated society struggles to ascend, or at least prevent themselves from falling to the next stage of rabble clamoring at them from below.  So many eyes twinkled with ambition.  So many strayed to the backs of their kin, to where a dagger might be placed.  Children ran through the streets, perhaps in contrasting innocence.  The Whisper would be careful here.  He knew the games these people would play, and adding the complicating factor of an eclectic player base to the mix would do this situation no good; their arrival would light no shortage of available fuses.

His skin crawled within an hour of arrival, requiring a change of scenery.  The skyport was a logical choice, offering a better vantage and satisfying his curiosity about the vessels that travel to and from the place.  Access was surprisingly easy.  Apparently, only the upper platforms were off limits to commoners.

Blending in was a simple enough task.  Every manner of individual wandered the docks, as he did.  It was the closest thing to a true multicultural melting pot he'd encountered in all of Aincrad.  The local military also maintained a strong presence here.  No surprise given the proximity of Ladonia's Imperial Spire.  The royals weren't likely to care for anything that aspired to the same heights as they claimed for themselves.  Powerful people rarely tolerated competition, especially in such feudal societies.  

Shoving his hands into his pockets, Freyd walked the various piers, soaking up the richness of details.  Cardinal had gone all out on this one.  Ships flew colours of nations that existed only as secondary lore, but existed in no other way in the game.  Their crews carried quirks of fashion, accents and mannerisms that made it believable that they'd come from afar.   Ladonia had apparently conquered many lands, and traded with even more, beyond.  It was like walking through ancient Rome, or London at the height of the empire.

Cries disturbed his daydream.  A disturbance up ahead carried angry shouts; the type that so often ended in bloodshed.  Instinct kicked in and Freyd found himself concealed behind a stack of crates and assorted cargo, peering around to sneak a peak at the incident.  Some sort of official was arguing with a squad of dock guards.  An unusual vessel with dark sails and markings was berthed in the background.  Its crew carried a distinctly unsavory air about them.  Perhaps that was what had set the harbourmaster off?  

"I told you, Ryland.  Leave this one alone.  We'll take care of it."  The guard captain's dismissive tone dripped with arrogance.

"That's easy for you to say.  I'm the one whose arse will get keel hauled if there are any improprieties.  They have no manifest, no docking clearance and refuse to identify their port of origin.  You've heard the same rumours I have about the Galteans being up to something.  I can't turn a blind eye to this."

"He really don't know what's good for him, huh?"  The ship's captain hollered from the prow of his vessel, his crew chiming in with their chuckles.  "We gots goods to load.  Come on now.  Make him accidentally slip and fall so that we can get on with it."  A shrill whistle from his lips set his men to work.

Ryland's face blanched as he realized the full extent of the danger, eyes darting back towards the guard captain, who sighed and drew his blade.  

"Sorry, old friend.  It's just business."

"What?  Why?!"  Ryland raised his hands, not even thinking to draw his own blade, knowing that he could never fend off so many.  

'Smart move,' Freyd thought.  'But also stupid.'

The guard captain's face laid his intentions bare as he advanced, his sword slashing for Ryland's throat.  It never made contact. Instead, the guard suddenly found himself airborne and plummeting towards the ground.  Freyd had chosen to intervene.

Guards and pirates alike were stunned by the captain's sudden, vertical departure.

"Run." 

It was all the Whisper spoke before launching himself at the remainder of the squad.  Their stupor wouldn't last long.  He needed to take maximum advantage, while he still could.  Alarms from atop the nearby ship confirmed that the pirates had elected to get involved.  Several dozen crudely armed sailors scrambled down the gang plank towards the dock, even as more guards rounded the corner, angling towards Freyd.

"Oh, great.  Just perfect.  Everyone around here really is crooked."

"Not everyone."  Ryland came up at his side, sword bared and ready to fight at Freyd's side.  The man's tired armor and uniform spoke to a lifetime of service and experience.  Grey dominated his thick beard and the strings of hair that could seen beneath his helm.  There was steel and fire in his eyes.  Here was a good man, and one of the few to be found on this particular dock, it seemed.

A sideways glance and nod was all that could be spared.  Freyd was grateful, but their foes were crashing towards them in numbers that made it feel like they were bracing against tidal waves.  

"Who the hell are these guys?" Dodging a series of blows, Freyd quickly dispatched another handful of foes while trying to keep the rest at bay.

"Skyrats, would be my guess."  Ryland moved slower and struggled to hold his ground against their sheer numbers.  Snaring a shield from one of the fallen guards seemed to help.  The man's fighting style suggested that he might once have been a marine, well-accustomed to this type of perilous, close-quarters combat.  "They're one of the more brazen local gangs, occasionally hitting merchant ships just beyond the city walls."  He paused just long enough to slam his shield into one of the pirate's faces, sending him hurtling of the edge of the pier.  "It seems that their influence reaches farther than anyone had imagined."

"Right.  So this sky harbour thingy has a rat problem.  Gotcha."  A shriek-filled sweep of Samael's Pride cut down another pair of pirates, even as a pulse of holy light sent a third flying with unnatural force into a pile of heavy crates.  The man's form exploded into a shower of shards upon impact.  Ryland's eyes turned to saucers at the display.  

"Just who are you?  Some sort of imperial agent, or something?  They aren't even touching you!"  As if on cue, one of the pirates managed to catch him with his cutlass, leaving a deep gash in his right arm.  Freyd spun and brought his weapon down on the attacker's arm, shattering it.  The rest of the startled man's form followed.

"I prefer to think of myself as a janitor, actually."  A wry grin affixed itself on his face, obscured by his trademark cowl and fast, flowing movements.  "I don't work for your empire.  Actually, this is my first time here, and I have to say: the hospitality is seriously lacking."

Ryland laughed, despite his injury.  Struggling to use the wounded limb, he focused more on shielding Freyd's flank and preventing further damage to himself.

"That's good enough for me.  Calas and his lot have been acting suspiciously for months.  When I saw them heading here, I figured I'd join them and we could take on any funny business together.  It was foolish of me not to realize that he and his men might have been in on it."  The older man shook his head, scolding himself for being so naive.  "If you hadn't been here, I'd be dead now."

"Meh.  Whatever.  We'll call this my morning workout."  

It was fortunate that corpses disintegrated when they fell, in Aincrad.  Otherwise, by now, the dock would be so littered with them that it would be nearly impossible to stand.  More pirates kept spilling from the ship, whose name Freyd had just spotted - the Cloud's Scorn.  It felt a little like watching an endless stream of clowns emerging from some little tiny car, there were so many of them.

"Uh... sure."  Ryland didn't quite know what to make of the man who had proven to be his saviour.  "I have a family.  If we survive this, you'll have ensured that their father comes home.  Whoever you are, I don't take that lightly."

Freyd?  Are you actually being heroic?

Montjoy's question stung, for some reason.  Perhaps only because Freyd tended to view these sorts of interactions from a purely mechanical perspective.  In his mind, he'd found some bad guys and been provided with a reason to smite them.  It hadn't really occurred to him that it might be the morally right course of action.

"Freyd.  You can call me Freyd.  Let's see if we can finish up that survival part, before you start offering thanks.  Yeah?"

The pirates and guards had both regrouped and faced off against them in larger numbers.  Ryland's arm had healed, at least, which about all they had going for them.  Freyd knew to take whatever silver linings were available.

"Staying here probably isn't a very practical solution to our current problems.  I'm not really a fan of cutting and running, but there are practical limits to how long we can keep doing this.  Any ideas?"

Ryland's grimace confirmed his agreement.  The harbourmaster knew this level of the docks better than anyone.  

"Make for the end of the pier."

A quick glance confirmed that it was only a few hundred yards.

"Are we jumping," Freyd asked, half-joking.

"How about I tell you when we get there, just to make it easier."  Ryland's grin was of a type the Whisper had worn a thousand times.

"Yeah.  That means we're jumping.  Crap."  A furious flurry broke the first ranks that crashed into them, Freyd sparing a wide swing to collapse a nearby pile of barrels that spilled their slurry on top of their assailants while they made a break for their dubious goal.

A running battle developed as Freyd and Ryland made their way towards the end of the pier.  All of the other intervening berths were bare, offering no respite or hope of rescue.  Even if another patrol ship came to their rescue, there was no way to be sure that its crew weren't as corrupt at the guards already giving them chase.

"So, just to be clear, there is actually some sort of plan here, right?  We're not just taking a swan dive off the edge?"  A clever group, thinking to flank them, fell before Freyd's onslaught, given the rest a brief pause.

"There's a maintenance skiff hanging under the edge of pier.  Or, at least, there's supposed to be."

Freyd gave his companion an incredulous glare.

"It could be in use, and there's always a chance that someone forgot to return it."

"This is your plan?!"

Ryland repeated his grin.

"Oh, great.  Just great.  Now I know what everyone else feels like when I do the planning!"  Donning a matching grin, the two resumed their run.

A fighting retreat hadn't been part of Freyd's plan when he got up this morning, having settled on finally exploring the newly unlocked floor.  Ladonia wasn't leaving a great first impression so far, either.  The dockmaster seemed a decent fellow, though, assuming that he wasn't about to get them both killed.

"Grab a mooring lines when you get to the end.  They droop down to the service deck below and till allow us to reach the skiff."

"You hope," Freyd replied, a smile still perched upon his lips.  The insanity of this moment held its appeal.

"Yeah.  I hope."  That Ryland had kept up in his heavy armor had been equally impressive, especially given his age.  Freyd pegged him at over fifty, at least.

"If we survive this, you need to tell me how the hell you ended up in this mess.  You don't strike me as the paper-pushing type."

The final leg of their chase was no less haggard than the rest.  A horde of angry guards and pirates followed close behind, intent on tossing the two of them from the docks, desperate to keep them silent.  None ever imagined that their quarry would do them the favour.  Pulling a full Thelma and Louise, Freyd and Ryland took a running leap from the end of the dock, each grabbing a mooring cable at the last moment, then catching nothing but air.  By the time their pursuers reached the same spot, the two men were gone.  Only a pair of ropes silently, swinging in the wind, marked their passage.

The two men, meanwhile, desperately clutched to the rickety service gangway hanging from the underside of the main dock.  Half of its supports were missing, and the whole thing creaked menacingly with promise that it would drop if either of them uttered so much as a syllable in protest.

Ryland looked like he was ready to have a heart attack.  His face had turned a purplish red and cheeks were swollen, trying to contain the screams of fright and panic that wanted to burst out from his lungs.  Freyd was grinning like an idiot.  Everything behind those calculating eyes was merely a mechanism meant to manipulate math.  He'd figured out all of his angles and factors well before they reached their jumping off point.  A sparing glance to the next pier over had already revealed the shape and position of the gangway, and Ryland didn't seem the type to neglect his duties.  That said, the platform's state of repair was somewhat less than he'd expected.  It was likely more than guards and pirates who were on the take, and shirking their responsibilities.  Now that Ryland was aware, heads would surely roll - if they managed to survive long enough to do anything about it.

A set of heavy footfalls stomped across the thick timber deck boards directly over their heads.  They landed with dire purpose, greeted by the sideways shuffling of boots and lighter feet as the rest eagerly made way for their passage.  Tiny, isolates falls of sawdust and grit dribbled down from beneath each pair of board onto which they fell.

"What happened?"  The voice was gruff, and carried dire implication in its tone, depending on the quality of the answer provided.  

"They... they jumped, Captain!  We were too much for them!"

"Idiot."  A slap thundered in the air overhead, promptly followed by an involuntarily diving figure.  Ryland quickly gestured for Freyd to hide himself behind one of the columns suspending the gangway, as he did the same.  Both men prayed that the wrought iron was wide enough to conceal them. 

"Mind my hat."  Two thumps followed as a pair of knees found purchase against the deck.  The creak of folding leather followed.

Freyd felt the threat emanating from the pirate captain without even seeing him.  The brief eye contact they'd shared in the opening moments were enough.  He'd slain enough dungeon bosses to recognize a mob of equal or great standing when he met one.  Here was one of the very worst.

"Hrm.  Skiff's still here.  I expected better of Ryland."  The creaking folded back upwards.  Shuffling signaled the return of a feathered hat.  "Fat lot of good you lot did."  The shambling of metal armor as guardsman shifted uneasily beneath the pirate's gaze confirmed that their own captain was either gone, or as subservient as the rest.

"Actually, the other one did most of the deadin', cap'n."

"Is that so?  Good thing he's gone, then.  Good riddance to both of them.  Now, everyone back to the dock.  We have cargo to load, and this will have attracted unwanted attention.  I trust that you'll take care of that for us, right sergeant?"  The rub of metal on metal suggested a nod.

"Good."  Two hearty claps set the entire platforms swaying as the crowd turned and dispersed.

Both men held their breaths while their foes returned to their pilfering and plunder.  The heavy footfalls followed more slowly after them.  Ryland looked terrified.  Freyd looked excited.  

"We're lucky to be alive.  That was Ulric Drell, the leader of the Skyrat gang.  I've seen him crush a man's head with a single hand.  We'd have been no match for him."

The glint in Freyd eyes suggested that he very much wanted to see if that was true.  The Whisper never liked to run from a fight, and would probably still be mid-melee on the docks if doing so wouldn't have cost Ryland his life.  

"Tell me what you know.  All of it.  I'm going to rip these skyrats apart."  The bone-chilling glee in the player's voice was enough to give the dockmaster pause.

"Look, Freyd was it?  You did good up there, and I appreciate the save.  But only a madman would go up against that a second time."

"Offer accepted."  In Freyd's mind, the matter was already settled.

Ryland just stood there, his mouth gaping, eyes partially smothered by a pair of bushy greying eyebrows in desperate need of plucking.  Freyd just stood there, grinning.

"Come on.  That Drell fellow struck me as a clever one, which means he'll swing by the underside of the dock for an extra peek whenever they weigh anchor, or however the heck all that stuff works with airships.  We need to be long gone."

Purpose and self-preservation were enough to bring Ryland back to his senses and set him into motion.  The maintenance skiff was soon loose with both men aboard, setting a course that would keep them well-clear of any prying eyes from above.  Freyd focused on memorizing every detail he could of Drell's ship.  The dockmaster's tale could wait.  Streaks of pink and purple laced the sky, bouncing off the smattering of clouds floating lazily about, bloated like the empire below and just as full of themselves.  This place was headed for a fall.  Freyd could sense it.  The only questions was which of its many issues would be the first to ignite.

Ryland brought the skiff down in one of the more rundown areas of town, a grim expression and pre-occupied mind wearing on him.

"It won't be safe for you to return to the docks.  You realize this, yes?"  Freyd hopped over the side of the small vessel, eager to feel solid ground beneath his feet.  The floating vessels felt too much like some sort of cushioned fair ground ride, for his tastes.  Maybe the larger vessels would be more stable.  Turning, he found the older man's head pressed against the mast, brow furred in frustration.

"What have I done?"  It was rhetorical, but Freyd ignored the intent.

"What you had to.  And, the right thing.  I haven't seen enough of that around here, so far.  You and your family need to get to ground."  He tossed the dockmaster a sack of col drawn from thin air.  "That should help, if you use it wisely.  Call me when they are settled and safe.  This thing isn't over yet."

"Thank you, Freyd.  I think?"

Freyd paused as he was walking away.  His cowl turned partway back towards the mob, even as the skiff began to hover off the ground once more.  Without a word, he turned forward again, and kept walking.
