Demonic Possession or Gleaming Future

Figuring that he shouldn't be dawdling around, the hunter figured that it was time to set about getting some demonic material so that he could fulfill his better build.  Hirru decided not to go to his favorite haunt to ruin any odd or weird plans that the elves of the area were plotting.  From what Freyd had talked about, and from their own fights with a few assassins that were aiming to kill them both, the Dark Elves had some weird things going on.  What was going on with this Spire shenanigans that the wanderer talked about?  The hunter could not get much out of him. 

He shrugged slightly while pursing his lips in thought.  Freyd never did tell the hunter about himself, did he!?  He figured that it would probably be a good idea to invite him back for another round, so Hirru sent out a quick message.

A shower of shattered red crystalline shards rained down around him.  Some mob had just died, violently.  It was a frequent occurrence around him.  So much so that he'd come to tune it out and was already reading Hirru's message, received a moment earlier.  This particular outing had just drawn to a close and he wasn't needed elsewhere for a few more hours.  Pulsing thrums in his hand slowed as Samael's Pride slowly returned to its more nominal state.  The weapon could never truly be sated, but it was at least satisfied with the outcome of their battle.  It was so like its master.

"Word from the vice-commander, or so I think the title went.  Interesting."  A gloved hand raised to stroke a slender, angular chin, pondering the invitation.  Hirru had made an impression with his admission about the Dark Elven Council.  Freyd had taken it as an act of will that sought to cling to traces of humanity that were quickly vanishing among the players trapped in this hellish nightmare.  He could also see why others would have reacted with anger.  It was a brave act, teetering on the brink of madness.  He approved.

"Worth investigating," Freyd said to himself.  Nothing else around him had survived to hear the words.  This 'Jade Hunter' had depth to him, and a conscience.  Thoughts drifted to his own struggles with right and wrong.  Morality was a luxury that Firm Anima's captain of O&I could rarely afford, yet he knew that the crystal spinning overhead somehow managed to retain its emerald hue.  "Maybe he can teach me a thing or two."

If it was true, and the frontliners were already reaching for the next labyrinth, they would need all the help they could get.  This one had proven himself worthy, and his gear could definitely use a bit of improvement.  It was worth an investment of his own time to ensure that this man survived, and even prospered.  Vanishing into the pressing shadows, the Whisper would not be seen again until his arrival in Scalabis' central plaza. 

"Hirru." 

A hail and respectful nod signaled his companion as Freyd emerged from behind a series of stacked crates.  It was a clichéd entrance, but even those served their purpose, and Freyd rarely did anything without a purpose.  Conversation was also rarely his thing, used sparingly and as required.  He was a listener and collector of rumors and tidbits, first and foremost, finding it more informative to let others do the talking.

Some time passed while the hunter waited.  The port side city was quite lively with commerce, especially now that Leviathan and it's horrific sahagin no longer torment the ocean waves of the twenty fourth floor.  Some people saw him and would greet the 'adventurer' and give thanks for their triumph over the undersea God fish.  The hunter would have to wave them by without a response.  He had not been there with those that killed Leviathan, so he did not deserve such praise.

One of the NPCs came to him and said

"Adventurer!  If your in need of some coin and have the thrill for cutting down Sahagin scum, then I got a barge down by the pier that we've been using to pull the beasts out.  If you want, I'll throw let you have anything they drop, just leave me the meat."

The man laughed his big belly off before heading down towards the pier.

Hearing his name and seeing the ebon haired wanderer known as Freyd, the hunter would give a curt wave back in a little two finger salute style.

"Hey, good to have you come with.  One of the NPCs is setting up a Sahagin hunt on his barge, sounded like a good deal to me."

Awaiting his hunting partners approval, they would head out and meet with the Captain of the barge.

"Ah!  You join us for a little expedition then, Adventurers?!  Grand!  Then climb aboard, and we'll head on our way."

The Captain bellowed while tying off a few ropes here and there.  On the barge itself, there seemed to be some nets full of fish, both fresh and rotting.. It seemed to attract the beasts, as four Fishmen jumped out of the water and attacked.  Hirru would strike first.

"Fishing," Freyd said, flatly.  "This never ends well." 

Visions of being propelled through the air while attempting to flense a giant flounder flooded to mind from his memories  Oscar, bellowing like a madman, as they tried not to be drowned in the process.  Or that one with the rowboat, where he taunted fate, knowing that it would summon the beast right behind him to nip him sharply on the backside, or fling him from his dinghy in despair.  Freyd didn't mind fishing, strangely enough.  He'd even picked up the skill and found peace in the activity, along side images of his grandfather.  But, fishing definitely hated Freyd, with a passion.

Scions of fishiness stooped before them, gills flaring, and throats burbling something angry at the two players.  Their tridents called for blood, or tartar sauce.  He wasn't quite sure.  Best to just put them out of their misery.  His first thrust pierced the nearest fish-man with such vicious fury that it instantly became a kebob.  Before the poor thing could disintegrate, he swung it in a wide arc, decimating the rest of its rank band of marauders, leaving nothing but a fine mist of of pulverized, digital fish flakes in their wake.

"So, not a bad beginning, at least."  A goofy grin beamed beneath the cowl.

"So far, so good!"

"I didn't expect to have such powerful adventurers when I was scouting around for this venture, but I am sure glad to have you two!  Greenhorn!  Pick up those remains and get to work!"

The Captain said while having another fellow start sweeping the deck, and removing some parts that didn't immediately shatter when the creatures were dead.  It seemed they were keeping most of the left overs that didn't get slapped into Freyd and Hirru's party inventory, onto a little table near the bridge, where the crewmate seemed to be measuring and checking the parts themselves.  It seemed that they would be busy with that, so that the party wouldn't have to worry about hitting them in the cross fire.  Hirru felt like helping out, but was interrupted by another wave of the bastards.

"I guess we'll be earning our keep out of this mess!"

The hunter said while rushing through the mass of scales and delivering a single sweeping slash that was aimed at all of their backfins.

A pulse of gravitic force slammed into the space on Hirru's left flank, popping the tricky Sahagin that had sought to exploit an unexpected opening.  Freyd's staff struck with such momentum that it passed clean through the mob, but could get clear in time to snag a second target.  An instant later, Freyd stood on the far side of their foes, his method of travel unclear and catching another pair of advancing fish-men off guard.  Already beaten and battered from their foolish faceoff against the Jade Hunter, the first fell into fragments with but a gentle tap.  Spinning the weapon around, tight to his midsection, the outermost tip screeched as the slender membrane of light that contained it recoiled and exposed the void within.  The staff passed through the final mob, disintegrating every bit and byte unfortunate enough to make contact.  Its remaining health bar collapsed and the creature's remains were instantly sucked into the darkness.  Screeching gave way to the clinking of a few final shards clattering against the deck planks.

"Darn," spoke the Whisper, flatly.  "Missed one."

"I got it!"

Hirru called out as he ducked away from the sweeping darkness that was Freyd's transforming weapon.  With the power that was presented to the wanderer, the hunter wondered how he could hold that power at bay, at times.  Was it a boss weapon that he gained?  The hunter would have to ask with some of the other questions that he had for the burst damage master.  That would not be the time though, as the last Sahagin was coming out of the paralysis placed upon it.  Setting his arts to single target, the hunter sliced once through the left shoulder crossing downward before arcing back into a horizontal cut.  The last hit would be a single rising slash to end it.

As the body fell apart, with most of it shattering, something strange fell down in it's place.

"Huh, what's this?"

Picking it up, the hunter had in his hand something wrapped in paper.  Unfurling the paper, Hirru found a shard of something demonic.  The aura that flowed through this made his detect skill fluctuate slightly as if it were an enemy.  This was the first time that Hirru had found one, but it seemed like they didn't have to wait long.

Hirru found a demonic shard!  Looking at the paper that came with it, it seemed that it was a map to somewhere to find a high tier dungeon.  Hirru was so excited.

"Nice, I found a shard!"

It was then that a weird golden leaf fell from the east winds.  It lightly touched both items before flying off, and before the hunter's eyes they shone in a brilliant light.  As the light died, there were now two shards and two maps.

Eyes wide at Hirru's revelation, Freyd instantly called up his inventory, surveying the list of loot gathered to date.  After so many grind runs, he practically knew the standard loot drop patterns by heart.  Recognizing patterns was part of what made him a good appraiser in the first place.  A few of the drops were definitely larger than expected, and by a very direct order of magnitude.

"Huh," he sputtered, stoically and in muted mockery of the glee that might have escaped from anyone else's mouth.  A raised eyebrow was about the extent of any further emotive reaction.  The man was a cold fish.  Another wave of Sahagin rose from the sea, likely spawned by sheer irony.  

"Must be something going on."  Sparing a glance at the sky and surrounding settlements, Freyd sought any clues that they might have wandered into some sort of bonus loot dungeon.  "Any ideas?"  

With disturbingly casual ease, Freyd battered the approaching hostiles, one of them swallowed whole by another screeching blow from his weapon.  The rest were left, just slightly less mauled, for Hirru to dispatch.

Hirru shrugged as the next wave jumped out of the water, and tried to assault them.  That wouldn't get very far with both of the monster hunters here to clean the waters of these wastes.  The hunter had enough of these things when he had to fight their chieftain, and if it wasn't for Baldur wanting him to lay low, he would have helped slay their god too.  He would sigh as the last three were easily ripped into with another double AOE slash combo.  With that, Hirru was already at half of his energy reserves, though it wasn't showing too much.  With a heavy breath, he cracked his neck by craning it a bit to the side.

"Two more waves and we can switch over to dungeon searching gear.  Should have enough energy for just those, then we can resume our hunt afterwards."

He called out to both Freyd and the Captain, whom understood the command, as they heard him shout back.

"Copy that!  I'll wheel us around to.. dungeon?  What?"

"Don't worry, I'll let you know where to go!"

"Two more, eh?  That won't take long.  Gimme a minute."

Launching himself at the next wave, a pattern of rapid swings and strikes shatters bones and turns digital mesh into splatters across the floor.  Three smears laid themselves out around the sole survivor, spread in a radial pattern away from Freyd's position.  A chuckle slipped through his lips as he steadied his breathing upon completion of his kata.  Another wave of enemies laid low, decimated by a ruthless assault.  

"Dungeon?  Yeah.  They shouldn't be too tough to find around here, especially with your talents." 

Freyd had seen Hirru's work first hand.   Fewer scouts were as effective.  Stepping back into a defensive stance, he held the staff before him in both hands.  Even with their tridents, his reach kept them at bay.

"I wasn't aware that you'd been active on this floor.  Things must have been rough after twenty-three."

A quick flick of his gaze was enough to signal Hirru to flank the last Sahagin and finish bringing this latest group down.

"I was only here for a little bit.  Just to help kill the labyrinth guardian of this floor."

The hunter sighed while circling around the last sahagin, to gain some leverage on it.  As he did so, another one of those golden leaves seemed to fall down upon the battlefield.  It seemed to mesmerize the fishman enough for Hirru to strike true.  Another three hit combo would separate another shard from a lone sahagin.  As the hunter was about to pick it up, the wind shifted again, and the leaf touched the spoils of war, and made them duplicate once again.  That made four demonic shards, in less than an hour or two.  There was something heavily fishy about this situation, and it wasn't the fish bait left to rot on the deck.

"Was another event happening somewhere?"

It slightly explained why they were gaining double amounts of loot from random mobs, but not all.  He couldn't remember what time of the year it was, mostly because he never paid any attention to it.  However, he could say that usually events mean something happening Aincrad wide.  They just needed to find the source.

"Look!" 

Freyd didn't point or actually give any indication whatsoever to signify his point.  He just kinda vanished.  An instant later, cries of alarm sounded from behind a rocky shoal near where their sordid excuse for a ship was meant to pass.  Fish guts sailed through the air, dematerializing soon after being severed from their host body.  The fact that Freyd was technically using a blunt weapon made it that much more disturbing, but the sheer amount of hellish shrieking that came from the seaweed coated rocks quickly confirmed his weapon's handiwork.  

Something metallic clanked against rough stone, followed by sounds of glee and the fall of golden leaves from thin air.  

"Ah-hah!  Yup.  Definitely an event, or something.  I'd never be this lucky otherwise."

One last, surviving Sahagin fled around the corner, hoping for a reprieve while the assailant who'd disrupted their ambush stared at a pair of black, crystalline slivers similar to those Hirru had found.  The mob simply wasn't having a good day, rounding right into the Jade Hunter's path.

Slapping the shards into their sharded inventory space, the hunter readied himself for the next raid, but Freyd was one step closer.  An ambush was awaiting them, but before it could be enacted, the Whisper slapped a few of them into crystalline shards, while the last one seemed to nearly fall from the shoal into Hirru's awaiting blade.  The sahagin was at full health, which meant that the hunter couldn't easily kill it in one go, like Freyd could.  However, the hunter was good at keeping a body in one spot for some time, at least, that's what he hoped to do with his equipment.  A five pointed star directional slash would ring out against the marine life, which would cripple it in place for a second.  The hunter would sigh while backing away so he was not caught in the orbital bombardment that was Freyd's hammering strike.

As soon as Freyd would deal with the issue, as he had no doubt the man would, the hunter would call out to the Captain.

"Head north by north east, Captain!  We're heading to danger, so be advised."

Stepping into the very blind from which the mobs had sprung, Freyd reappeared from the final mob's shadow.  The fish-man's mouth opened in surprise, but any outcry was swallowed along with his guts as the staff protruded from his chest.  The entirety of his form vanished inward towards the void, until nothing remained but the distant cawing of gulls and other avian scavengers.  The immediate threat had been dispatched.

Clamoring back onto the boat, Freyd signaled safe passage to the Captain, who had been waiting following Hirru's instruction.  

"Right.  This was just basic warmup," Freyd said, laughing softly.  It wasn't far off from the truth, though greater challenges surely lay ahead.  Taking the opportunity offered by a gear change, the Whisper did the least expected of all things and struck up a conversation.

"So, what have you been up to since we last met?  Arabian Nights, wasn't it?  Did you ever finish the last part?"

"No, I never got to finish it yet.  Got busy trying to search for the twenty sixth floor labyrinth."

The hunter sighed while walking over to the edge of the barge.  Taking a seat on the wet surface, he wouldn't mind too much as the wetness wasn't something that lasted in this world.  Out of all of the water in Aincrad, the ocean looked the liveliest on this floor.  It seemed to flow much better than even the twenty second floor's Lake of Reflection.  This was the first time that he had sailed its seas, and he could tell that this was something he could get used to.  Maybe, this was one of his memories?  Nothing seemed to come up, so he couldn't really tell.  However, he still liked the breeze and the spray of the sea water from the waves.

"Trying to get a party together was oddly simple, if not weird.  I somehow messaged people that I didn't even know.  I'm not sure how that happened."

Night and Crozeph, two people that he had never talked to once, somehow got his message to scout the twenty sixth floor.  He couldn't tell if it was the world's system? helping him out, or if his luck was just that good.  Either way, they wouldn't have gotten the labyrinth guardian's position, and killed it as fast without them.

"Even still, we were able to work together to get through the 26th floor with relative ease.  Fought a giant rat creature, that seemed to be faster than most floor bosses than I've faced before."

The hunter flipped through his menu and found his bracelets that gained him more luck.  He wouldn't know how well he would be in scouting without Favor of the Golden Dragon.  Soon, his armor disappeared from his body, while leaving the signature silver and gold bracelets that boosted his performance.

"Another floor raid, already?"  Freyd seemed skeptical, an eyebrow arched to reinforce the point.  "It feels like we barely just cleared our way through that inky little shi...err... Shadow."

"I was fresh off the pier when that raid happened, never even having attended the planning meeting for it, though I heard through the grapevine that it was a bit of a mess.  Aincrad's players are at their best when they've actually united behind a common goal, not so much when talking about it."  

Gloved fingers absentmindedly stroked his chin as he spoke, mental gears grinding beneath his woolen cowl.  A modest grimace graces what few features could be seen.  

"Progress is good, I guess."  He was clearly and oddly unconvinced, even as he relaxed and leaned against the ship's mast, ignoring the captain completely.

"Have they set a date and place for the meet yet?"  Freyd wasn't sure whether he should consider attending.

Hirru shrugged while looking towards the ever growing dark clouds in the distance.  They were creeping ever closer towards the place they had been before, although it seemed to be slightly different now.  They had crossed over with bridges before, but this time they were on a boat, so it must have been that.  Though, the hunter didn't remember the storm clouds around the area.

"Captain!  What is this area called?"

A yell would come back to him.

"We're coming closer to one of the Storm Anchor Islands!  I dunno where you're going, but this is far from Sahagin Territory."

"I know!  I'm looking for another creature."

The hunter would call back before getting back up and looking over to Freyd.  Going back to the conversation about the front lines.

"I felt that it was time scout out the labyrinth of the twenty-sixth floor, cause I had not heard anyone declare that they were doing so, or had found anything.  I guess I can be impatient, but I think we all are."

Hirru walked over to the cutting table that the greenhorn was working around.  Looking around at the remains of sahagin that didn't get sucked into oblivion, or shattered to Lunala or whatever this game calls an afterlife.  He didn't much care for it, instead asking the greenhorn if he could take any of the extra bits that they weren't using.  After that, he would speak aloud to Freyd once more.

"We've beat the labyrinth guardian, which was extensively hard.  I couldn't even get a single hit in, but everyone else seemed to take it down.  So now we're waiting on Ariel or Baldur to announce the meeting.  I think Ariel was going to host it at her dojo?  Eh, I'm sure we'll get a message about it soon."

After getting a sack full of the unnecessary parts, the hunter returned to his spot.  At some point, the Captain had called for sails to be lifted, to slow down steadily while they coasted closer.

"I won't be able to get you boys closer.  Those waves would rip my barge into pieces!"

"That's fine!  That's why I was searching for another ride."

"It thought you were looking for a creature."

"Yeah, it's big enough for it."

The hunter called out while throwing the sack full of sahagin parts into the water.  Some time would pass, as the sack drifted away from them before something splashed out of the water, engulfing the sack, and disappearing back into the water.  The sight of the thing, though, would make for some awestruck passengers.  The head of a giant sea turtle snapping down upon the bait.  Slowly, the turtle would breach the surface once more, as Hirru's search abilities would identify the key to the dungeon.  It's head and upper shell were the only things visible at the moment, but the scale that they showed were still quite a bit bigger than the barge itself.

"While hunting down this floors labyrinth, we found this little guy, which seemed to be connected to a dungeon somehow.  Now, we're here to see where it leads.  Though, it looks like its much bigger than I remember.  Must have been preying on those sahagin that we killed during it all."

Hirru kept forgetting himself.  This world was fake, and everything in it didn't have any continuity to it all.  This could have been a completely new turtle that the game system could have created just now, just because his luck stats were that high.  Even though he still didn't get much of it, he knew how to work with it.  A fake world, is just a story.

"Now.. how to get on it.."

Grabbing a thick coil of hemp rope from under the greenhorn's table, Freyd sprung into action, fashioning a pair of improvised grappling hooks.  Tossing one to his companion, he dragged his own to the barge's edge and spun it forcefully around.  His first toss failed, falling short and forcing him to haul it back.

"Where did you find it, and who else was there with you?  It sounds like it was quite the fight."  Readying the hook for his second attempt, he aimed it at the edge of its upper shell, near the edge where its neck emerged.

"So, we're hoping that this thing doesn't just roll over and drag us down, right?"  The look he gave Hirru seemed eager for some confirmation that this wasn't a one-way ticket to oblivion, more because that would be inconvenient than because of any apparent fear of death.

Truer aim snared his mark on the second try.  Tossing caution to the wind, the Whisper leapt down on the giant amphibian and motioned for Hirru to follow.

"Come on, Jade Hunter.  What could possibly go wrong? If you remembered this little fellow, maybe you left behind other memories below!"

From the barge, the captain's eyes widened as he witnessed the bold insanity of his passengers.

"To be fair, I can't say if it will or not.  My skill doesn't tell me how it will get there, only that it WILL get us there."

Hirru watched as Freyd wrangled a hold of the turtle and climbed atop its shell with relative ease.  He wished he was that athletic, but his armor choice weighed him down, even if he didn't have it on.  Though, with that, he did have a bit of evasion to speed himself up a bit.  Maybe, just maybe.  Hirru backed up a bit, before running forward and making his own attempt.  The issue was that he didn't have enough speed, as he missed his mark and fell into the water.  It felt cold as the water pulled him in.  He kicked and pushed until something clicked in him.  Floundering about, the hunter would regain composure slightly and found that he was starting to recognize something.  He could swim, slightly.  Surprising, compared to the other things that he didn't know about.  Though, it didn't take long for Hirru to remember the rope that he jumped with.  Taking ahold, he would pull himself back atop the turtle's shell.

"Never again.."

He motioned to Freyd as he tried to fling the water off of him, to no avail, he was drenched.  With that, the hunter found it time to change back to his proper armor.  His luck had done its course, and all they needed to do was ride it through.  His appropriate armor appeared upon his body, dry except for the exposed right arm and slacks, that were still wet.  Of course, his hair was a mop now.

"You Adventurer's are all crazy, you hear!  I'll await your return, or be sure to reclaim your remains."

"It won't take long!  We'll be back with a grander reward."

No sooner did he settle, did the turtle begin to move.  Slowly, it seemed to move forward.  Before they knew it, the barge had disappeared as the waves and mist filled their vision.  So far, the turtle wasn't showing signs of diving, until they passed close to the island.  It seemed to tower above them, but what made it seem more odd was a gigantic metal piece that seemed to be jutting out of the island's base and sinking into the depths.  As they got closer, the metal obelisk seemed to resemble a giant chain link.  Near the chain proper, was a small indentation where a cave entrance seemed to have been created from the giant chain's constant exertion upon the surrounding earth.  The turtle seemed to be swimming closer to it.

"There is our entrance!  We're going in!"

"That's no chain," Freyd spoke, his voice carrying a hint of awe as they approached their destination.  What had first appeared to be a massive loop of metal proved to be something far more worrisome.  "It's some sort of gigantic metal sea serpent!"  Even beneath layers of flotsam and jetsam built up over time by the relentless lapping of waters upon the shore, glimmering silver-like scales could be seen behind the detritus.  This thing was massive, and also apparently dead.  

"It looks... dull?  Like it could really use a polish or something.  Look up high.  There's its head!"  Coiled around its own sinuous body, the monstrous beast's mouth hung limply, swinging slight in the wind.  Its eyes and fangs were gone, having either been taken as trophies by whatever slew it or just worn away over time.  Movement spurred his attention back to the cave opening Hirru had spotted on their approach.  Smaller silver slivers, each roughly a dozen feet long slithered out and charged towards them like gleaming needles launched over the sandy beach.

"Baby sea monsters, dead ahead!"  Weapon out and whirling to counter their lightning speed, Freyd managed to deflect and scatter them, halting their initiative.  "Quick!  Before they recover.  I doubt it's just this lot we're going to have to worry about!"  

One of the beasts lunged at the man in black one to discover that he was already half-way through his swing.  A pulse of white and crash of thunder caused a cloud-burst of force to explode when the two made contact, splattering the snake upon the sands.

"Lovely vacation spot," Freyd joked, frivolously, despite being covered from head to toe in grit and slowly fragmenting serpent goo.  "We should come here more often."
