[PP-F11] Breaking Bark (w/ Koga)

Recommended Posts

Breaking Bark

It would be ages since the green haired hunter would find himself on the eleventh floor.  Not since he had left his old guild, which he had his own reasons for.  Still there was much that had to be done here, especially for the survival of the front lines.  Procuring certain drops from field bosses for all of the front would require quite some time and practice.  There were some field bosses that required reduced stats, that the hunter had found out about the hard way, when the Land Shark attacked him and reduced all of his damage and mitigation to something he had not seen in a year.

Now, he had heard of a consumable that shielded its users from high damage, that was dropped from the field boss of this floor.  Hirru came here to hunt it by itself, but with the reduced stats, it would probably take too long.  Information stated that it would heal itself at random points.  With that, he would look into the local player board to see if anyone was willing to join him on this hunt.  There should be someone here that would be willing to hunt a field boss with a tier four player, not that he would let anyone around here know that until they fight something.  He still took some precautions to help keep himself alive, but would keep something in mind for the other player.

With a click, Koga locked the door to his house behind him. Yuki had already gone out for the day to do...well, whatever it was that kid was doing these days, probably with Tala, but who really knew. In any case, Yuki had a key and could let himself back in, so all was well.

The sun's reflection off the windows forced Koga to squint as he walked towards the town's square, katana in hand, and wolf at his side. It wouldn't do much to do any more farming at this point, but still. It was a habit that kept Koga's skills sharp, and that was something he sorely needed given the upcoming battle, and the fact he'd let himself go a little recently. Some combat would do him well.

As Koga neared one of the busier areas of the square, a green head of hair stood out amongst the crowd...primarily on account of it being green, I mean, not many people had green hair even if this was an anime. A vague hint of recognition passed over Koga, he'd seen him before. And quite recently in fact. The boss raid meeting perhaps?

Venturing over quietly, Koga stood beside the man a moment before glancing over, if only to confirm his suspicions. Yup, 'twas indeed one of the players at that meeting. "Out farming?" Koga asked the man, not remembering his name well enough to actually address him by it. Sorry dude.

Hirru turned to the man that had just asked him a question.  Rather odd to just come up to someone and ask if they were 'out farming', but what else was there to do.  This floor was more or less cleared over a year ago, and all of its noticeable quirks were washed away when the 25th boss raid caused the whole world to be reset, in a way.  Though, the place never had any quests or nothing that really meant a damn.  It was only good for the dungeons that one could find in the ant caves, burrowed deep below.  That was, until field bosses became a norm.

"Ah, yes!  Hunting something big."

Now, It was odd, but he had seen this guy before, not too long ago.  That was right, the hunter thought.  This was one of the members in the meeting.  Who was it again?  He couldn't quite remember from his stare down and awkward instances with Macradon.  There was too much going on between them for either of them to take each other seriously.

"Sorry, I forgot your name.  I'm Jade Hunter, Hirru."

The hunter gave his unarmored sword-hand in a common greeting.

"Did you want to come along?  Going to farm up this floor's field boss.  It's going to revert our stats, but I'm sure the both of us can handle a huge tree."

Something big.

On this floor?

At his level?

Koga wondered what exactly that could be, given what he knew about the other man, which was, admittedly, painfully little. But, he doubted that an overgrown weed would prove much of a challenge for the man. In fact, anything on this floor should be a cakewalk for the Frontliner.

"Koga. Just Koga," the man replied, giving the offered hand a firm shake. "And don't worry, I'm not gonna lie, I forgot your name too," he added with a slight chuckle.

"Revert our stats?" the man repeated out of curiosity. "I'm down for that. Should make it a bit more of a challenge than usual, at the very least. I'll follow you then." At least he didn't have to go very far to find work.

"So, Jade Hunter," Koga said, trying to break the ice, "where'd you get that from? The hair?" That seemed the obvious answer by the very least.

"Koga, was it?  Great to hear."

The hunter said as he sent his new partner a party request.  It had been some time since he had partied up with anyone that wasn't someone he already knew from the front.  This would be an interesting pairing, as the hunter did not know this man's fighting style, but could work around it since he had fought side by side with Baldur far too many times to count.

"I see you're a katana user, like Ariel and Baldur.  It's a popular choice, I hear."

He started out towards the Reverent Forest, where the Wicked Wood liked to spawn in around, at least, that's what his sources say.  Hirru was really only just checking to see if the rumors of a shield consumable were true.

"Heh heh!  I'm sure you'll do well then."

----

Some time searching passes before the ground begins to quack, and the leaves and branches creek and shatter in the distance.  Soon, the sight of a large treant carrying a fairly large sword would be seen coming closer too them.  Hirru could already feel his health and damage begin to weaken as it drew closer.

"Prepare to engage!"

The hunter called out as he ran forward to attack the large treant, but as he did so, the Wicked Wood seemed to be trained on him.  Hirru could only wait before the large blade came crashing down upon him, but he would be ready to shatter that blade as it connected.  Although the art was meant for the body, so it kept shattering through the blade before it struck a few fingers on the Wicked Wood's hand.  However, that didn't mean that Hirru got out unscathed as the amount of pressure from the attack seemed to hurt, but only slightly.  His mitigation was on point for a tank, at this point.

"Kick him down a bit, Koga!"

The sensation of being dropped a tier was peculiar to say the least. Koga's body felt frail, his steps slower. If this is what getting old felt like, Koga was not looking forward to his golden years.

Bu that peculiar sensation was also the thing that told him they were growing close to their target. At the Hunter's words, Koga drew readied his blade, the steel glimmering with the light piercing the forest's canopy. Mere moments later, a humanoid pine made itself known, and Hirru was diving head first into battle. Splinters flew through the air as Hirru let loose a flurry of attacks against the massive tree, whereas the treant got no more than a single glancing blow against the other player.

The two combatants disengaged from each other, but only for a moment as Koga swooped in, not allowing their prey a moment's rest. A quick slash into the body, and Koga felt his blade bite deep bark, more chunks of wood flying into the air.

"Nice one!  We'll be able to take it down that much faster!  Let's keep up the pressure!"

The hunter called out as his newest hunting partner had taken the same strategy that he would, diminish the creature's mitigation and retaliate as fast as possible.  This strategy was much safer when Hirru could easily paralyze the creature, but that was a small chance to do so.  He had not upgraded his weaponry just yet, and it would probably take some time for him to do so.  Probably not until after the twenty sixth floor boss raid, but until then, he would focus on what he was supposed to do before hand.  The procurement and replenishing of buffs and safeguards for the front lines, as well as, scouting out the next floor.

Kicking off again, the hunter would fly into it's swing once more, but something different was going on at the treant's feet.  It's roots seemed to be ingraining themselves into the dirt.  It was not something he had seen before, so Hirru continued and delivered a three hit combo art, which he normally did to several targets instead.  After dealing the damage, though, Hirru noticed that the health that he took away was slowly filling back up.

"It's healing!?"

He said before being smashed with another heavy hit, but his armor was too much for the field boss.  He would shrug it off as Koga would be set up for his next run, as that tree seemed to be stuck now.

"Get another wack on him while it's stuck!  You'll have a better chance of it!"

Just as Hirru saw, Koga could see the sentient tree dig its roots into the earth, the wet ground beneath it moving around it's probing appendages like clay. The green healing aura began to play around the mob as Hirru called out his assessment. Koga snarled in annoyance, "I fucking hate it when these things do that," he said before moving in on the rooted enemy.

Careful to avoid the tree's attacks, Koga ducked beneath a flailing branch, certainly aimed for his partner as he ripped into the tree's thick bark again. As Koga skidded to a halt behind the tree, he took a quick moment to glance at his weapon. He'd expected it to ignite in it's signature black flame, or glow in that unholy light by now, but nothing. It had been a long time since Koga had set foot on a battlefield, sure, but not that long. Not nearly as long as other times.

Whatever, the time to address his failing weaponry wasn't now. "Hunter, you're up!"

Hirru was starting to learn the patterns that this giant tree being would take.  First it would slam, then it would slam while healing itself.  This was the only pattern he could really see, as this next attack would bring the roots out of the ground to stop the healing process.  A foolish endeavor, as the hunter was faster to respond to its advances, and act accordingly.  The last hit would go to Koga, but the hunter didn't mind.  They were not fighting on the front yet, and there wasn't much need nor a care for the last hit loot from the floor bosses, as players could create their own boss weapons.  Hirru would sigh while slowing his thought processes, allowing the world to blend in.  To Koga, it looked like the hunter was using a katana based technique with a bastard sword, a completely odd and silly thing.

Soon, though, the art would be registered in the network, and the sword would glow.  Hirru would run to the left side of the treant, where it would be much harder to hit him from, and let loose with a two hit wide arcing strikes that would form a cross.  As the hunter did so, he would notice the armored bark around the treant starting to heal.  The shatter effect was losing it strength as the field boss tried to grab for him, but failed as Hirru jumped around a bit.  He wasn't fast, but it was enough to not be crushed.

"Take it out, Koga!"

Loud cracking echoed through the air as the boss renewed its armor, the bark growing rapidly around its softer flesh. Even as Hirru delivered a strong blow with a Sword Art that strangely seemed to resemble those of katana users, the tree continued to shore up it's defense. Still, it wasn't going to be enough.

As soon as Hirru made the call, Koga sprang into the air. With his katana lifted above his head, the man let out a war-cry. The blade began to glow, not emitting light, but rather absorbing it, as if to correct Koga's previous concerns. The impact Koga felt wasn't of his weapon striking the boss, rather it was the earth. He hadn't missed. Tsuki no Hikari passed through the treant's body as if it were cutting paper. As the fragmented snow of the boss' remains began to drift down around them, Koga lifted his weapon and smiled. He should've never doubted her.

"Alright, one down," Koga said, turning towards his partner as he sheathed his weapon. "Go next?"

The hunter sighed in relief as his stats went back to the way they were supposed to for a time.  It wasn't a really hard battle, even with Hirru's stats lowered, the boss did nothing to him.  It was just the healing factor that really freaked the hunter out.  It that thing could actually break into him, or cause their hate to fall out of touch with each other, they may have had an issue then.  Though, the hunter was really glad to see that his newest hunting partner could go with the flow, especially with his choice in weaponry.  Baldur would definitely be keen to look into this one's arts.  Looking upon the item that they just got, the rumors seemed to be true.  A shield based buff that can protect entire parties worth of a fair chunk of damage.  Couple that with a competent tank or support that can see the signs of an AOE, and the entire raid becomes trivial.

"Hey, let's rest up a bit.  We gotta find another one before the end of the day.  Two of these things is great, but two for each of us will be a great tipping point on the front."

Hirru says while pulling out a little glass spectacle.  He was told that if he looked through this item, any creatures spawn limit would be reset.  Though, while the hunter looked through it, it seemed that the desired effect would not come to pass.  They would probably have to wait a bit.

That had gone about as Koga had expected. All those field boss hunts with Az had taught him what to expect from the mobs. He wondered what happened to his old friend. She was still alive, he knew that much, but he hadn't been able to get in contact with her in the past year or two. Certainly, that also had something to do with his own periodic disappearances, but it was strange nonetheless. Azhoda always seemed to live for the hunt after all.

At Hirru's suggestion to catch a breather, Koga nodded in agreement. "Copy that," he said, as his posture visibly relaxed. They had some time before the next boss spawned anyways, so unless they wanted to go beat up some normal spawns, there was nothing for them to do but sit around and wait. "What's that?" Koga asked, looking at the spectacle between his partner-of-the-hour's fingers. The small piece of glass glimmered between the man's fingers, and Koga wondered if it was some keepsake or another.

"Hmm?  This?  It's a spyglass, though, I got it on a particularly fancy place.  Instead of the long tube that other places had, this shop had this smaller one.  I liked it, since I don't normally have huge pockets or time to rummage around to find a shrunken tube thing."

The hunter chuckled a little at all that.  Out of everything that he had said, it was the lack of pockets that got him.  It was true that being battle ready was an equally required thing, but he barely ever used any of his items within it.  Anything that needed used was used outside of combat.  Maybe someday, he would need to.

"Hey, Koga.  Don't worry about what happened at the meeting.  Your inquiry was sufficient, and it gave thought about what we will be facing, even if it didn't sound like it.  Thanks!"

He was reminded of his first meeting, and how everyone looked down on him for speaking out.  It took him some time to be the tactician that he was today, but that didn't mean that he didn't have good insight that day.

"Huh, interesting," Koga said as Hirru explained what the item he was holding was. He'd of course known about spyglasses, but he'd never seen one like that. To be honest, he hardly ever used items aside from his weapons and armor to begin with, so he'd never paid too close attention to anything outside of that, but his penchant for buying (mostly) useless knick-knacks meant he could see himself buying one of those tiny not-so-useless items in his near future.

The conversation then took a sudden turn to the raid meeting that had occurred not long ago. Koga couldn't help but look at Hirru with a bit of surprise before her began to sheepishly rub the back of his neck. "Heh, yeah, thanks for sayin' as much," he said with a half-hearted chuckle. "I just want as many of us to live through this as possible, ya know?" Not that it mattered too much what he wanted. At the end of the day, the game was a program, ruthless and as efficient as it's hardware and programming allowed. And the Frontlines had gotten them this far, so they were doing something right. It didn't seem like there really was much that Koga could contribute beyond words at this point, and even that seemed to fall short.

The meeting had not been what Koga had expected. He'd imagined it to be more organized, structured, but then again, just as the Gaijin had said, most of them were kids. 'Organized' and 'structured' wasn't exactly in their vocabulary. Old wounds seemed to open and emotions bested people. Speaking of which..."Uh, Hirru...if you don't mind me asking...what happened at the 23rd boss fight?"

"Ha ha!  Well, I guess you would be curious about that.  I did make a fuss about Hidden's little stunt, but I did make quite a big one myself."

The hunter figured with how that whole mess went, he would be getting questions here and there, and this was one of them.  He was expecting more people to come to him about it, but it seemed that only a handful were really wanting answers.  One didn't even care about that and just wanted him to 'play nice', whatever that meant.  Although the motives were unclear for a couple, they all seemed to be roughly understanding, but that was only those that knew him before.  He had only told one person whom was newer to Hirru's eyes, and that was Freyd.  The hunter sat down while they waited.

"You may want to sit down for a bit.  I'll give you the short version, but it's still long enough.  Could pass the time until the thing comes up."

The woods around the area were tall and full of greenry, or so the hunter thought.  It would seem that the change in seasons was upon this floor too.  They would be seeing quite a bit more change fairly soon, especially when the next floor is unlocked.

Koga nodded and removed his katana from his belt, placing it beside him as he sat down next to the Hunter. A light breeze drifted by, the light sound of rustling trees peacefully contrasting to the battle that had occurred here just moments ago. Already the battle's damage to the environment had healed. When all of this was over, what would be left to signify that any of them had ever been here? For that matter, when they died, what was left. Nothing but a crossed out name on a marble slab.

"So, what's the story?" Koga inquired, crossing his legs and picking at the grass beneath them, the artificial scent of cut blades reaching their nostrils as he did so. "I don't really know much about the Frontlines aside from NIGHT, so I guess this'll be a good crash course onto what you guys have had going on and all."

"Well, I don't think you'll learn much from my story except for one thing."

The hunter's little grin fell as he would recall everything that happened on the 23rd floor, and the events that happened before and after.  The amount of times that the hunter had to recount that thing.  It was coming to the point of near insanity that he had to constantly go through repeating the story of his past, but there were those that would ask questions.  They needed to know what happened, and what to expect.

"No matter where your moral compass may point, do not let something lead you astray.  In the end, even with us all trapped here and death waiting at every corner, we are all playing a game.  The game will try to play you at some point.  Don't let it."

He would then start to chuckle to himself.  If only he had this knowledge back when, but the events of the past can not be unwritten, and are as set in stone as the scratched out names on the Monument of Life.

"So, let's begin in the middle, cause I'm tired of recalling this tale with everyone.  All that you need to know before then was that the boss was actually five individual dark elves, known as the Council.  They acted like a cohesive unit, like a proper raid party would.  A tank that would defend everyone, a heavy damage dealer that attacked anyone, a poison user that could bypass antidotes, a support that healed, buffed, and debuffed, and the leader whom pushed to where they needed to go."

He would use his finger to draw a bit in the dirt.  The symbol for each would be drawn as he talked about them: A shield for Evahira, the tank; a curved sword for Rori, the dps; a dagger for Ratar, the d.o.t.; a card for Durares, the support; and a rapier for Isaxi, the leader.  Each would be circled by a few rocks that the hunter would place around the area, to represent the players.

"We had already beat both Ratar, the poison user.."

Hirru crossed out the dagger.

"And Rori, the damage dealer."

Crossing out the curved sword, the hunter would start pooling a few of the rocks towards the card.

"Now during this entire fight, we had a few of us that were talking to the bosses.  Which seemed to elicit a response from the ones that we talked to.  It was odd, as we had never had a boss that would talk back as much as these would, while showing as much emotion as they did."

He would bring three stones up.

"Hestia and Teion.."

Would push two towards the shield and the rapier.

"They wanted to find out more about the lore, while trying to convince the bosses to stand down.  Obviously, that didn't work too well, although they seemed to be gaining more sway after Rori died.  It seemed that he and Isaxi, the leader, had a thing, or something.  I don't know.  Anyway, if you were there, you would know.  After his death, her orders were not getting to Evahira, the tank, and Durares, the support as well as they would."

A heavy sigh would come up before pushing the last stone up next to the card.

"And this last dumbass, is me"

Koga stopped picking at the grass as Hirru began to draw his diagram, and leaned over to peer at it as the man spoke. Five bosses, two down. So far, to Koga at least, things seemed to be going alright for the raiders. Although the mention of these bosses responding, talking, conversing intelligently with the players made his heart leap into his throat once more, even his face didn't indicate it. More evidence that not all NPCs in this game were less than sentient. Koga shook the thought from his head as Hirru went on, explaining the apparent relationship between the Council's leader and their DPS.

"I'm guessing from the way you say that, you fucked something up?" Koga said with far less tact than he probably should have used. "Er, sorry," he apologized. "So, what happened?" It couldn't have been good, given the serious tone that Hirru had taken since beginning his story.

"In more ways than one, but we'll get to that."

The hunter pointed back to the rock that was to represent him, which was positioned near the shield and the card.

"Now, here is where I messed everything up by doing something stupidly selfish.  You see these two, Evahira and Durares?"

As he made a circular motion to gesture around the shield and card portrayals, he would then mime a shield in his hand while throwing another hand back to mime keeping someone or something back.

"Evahira, no matter what, was always keeping their support, Durares, safe.  At least, as far as she could until everyone saw the boy as a bigger threat than the leader or the tank.  However, I was starting to see something while talkative players were doing their thing.  Isaxi, had a lot of sway towards the rest.  If she was out of the way, I thought that we could easily end this on a lot more peaceful note.  Evahira was sworn to her queen, but the queen was dead.  Actually, her bones were hanging up on the wall the entire fight!  I forgot about that!"

The hunter would put a skull somewhere around the outer area of the diorama, but then scribbled it out.

"It's not important anyway, until the end."

He would then motion towards the group of rocks about to 'slay' the card.

"Anyway, I said some words too, which seemed to get to them a little.  That's when I saw both Evahira and Durares worth saving, as the tank wasn't there for corrupted reasons, and the boy was just a prophet that was shown the wrong path in life.  The kid was scared and crying.  At some point, I don't think he was even buffing anyone, though that heal was passively going off.  Well.. anyway.."

The hunter then moved the rock representing him up next to the card, then drew a line in the dirt between the rock playing him, and the rocks playing the other players.

"I wanted everyone else to target Isaxi, but I didn't really explain the plan before hand.  I guess my head really got messed with in the end, cause instead of telling everyone to go after the leader as those two were merely being controlled, I decided to ..I took it upon myself to shield the boy.  Give him time to escape by giving Durares a teleportation crystal."

With that, the hunter crossed the card out while pushing two rocks over to be piled on top of his rock.

"Yeah, everyone disliked that."

The story was starting to get more complicated now. A queen's bones on walls, NPCs manipulating other NPCs, Hirru giving an NPC a TP crystal. The man's head was starting to hurt trying to keep track of what was going on and when. However, before the man could ask if NPCs could even use teleportation crystals, the sound of the earth cracking and splitting drew his attention. As he watched, the boss respawned, sprouting from the earth like a giant treeman.

"Looks like the big guy's back," Koga said, stating the obvious. "Finish telling me after we take care of him?"

Not bothering to wait for a response, Koga drew his blade and rushed at their renewed foe. Surprise wasn't in play here, but nonetheless, the swordsman dealt his blow, the bark chipping away just as it had before. And just like before, the player to attack first was also the first to be struck by the tree-man. No more than a glancing blow, but sadly, Cardinal made no distinction, and Koga was forced to watch a not-too-small amount of health drain from his HP bar.

Koga growled in annoyance, "Kick this asshole's teeth in Hirru!" Did tree-men even have teeth?
