[F1 – PP] A Second Attempt | <<The Second Lesson>>

Recommended Posts

Nari had arrived early, hoping to beat everyone else to the meeting location that they had agreed upon – a large fountain in a small courtyard just down the street from this blacksmith they were supposed to go see for the second part of this quest. She paced nervously, moving back and forth in front of the fountain with a look of agitation on her face. It had been a little while since she had last seen Bismuth, Koga and…Night. Her heart constricted a little at the name. That first encounter had been…well, something else. She had felt her mind returning to it over and over again, replaying the encounter in her mind – never giving her any real sign of peace from it.

The fox on her shoulder gave a slightly chirping sound, and Nari turned her head to glance at Yuki. The small beady black eyes stared back at her, the nose twitching slightly. Sighing, Nari gave the nose a little flick with the tip of her finger, causing the fox’s head to shake in response. “I know, it’s just…well…”

She didn’t finish the thought, not wanting to bring words to the situation itself. Sometimes things were best left unsaid, lest the words return with a vengeance – or at least, someone had once told her that.

Nari swatted at the air as the face appeared in her mind’s eye again, as if trying to remind her of the promise. It had been so long ago, and yet… Nari shook herself, riding the trace of thoughts from her mind. She needed to focus, the others would be here soon, and she didn’t want to be ill-prepared when they did. Especially…

Another chirping at her shoulder, and Nari glanced at the fox again – those beady eyes seeming to drill into her own vision, as if trying to tell her something. “If you’ve got some advice, I’d love to hear it. I’ve got nothing. I don’t even know what to say.”

Glancing down at her armour, Nari realised that she was slightly overdressed for the occasion – as far as she was aware they shouldn’t have to be heavily armoured. She thought. Shrugging mentally, she brought up her inventory, storing the armour and shield, leaving the sword on her hip as the violet dress took over her appearance. Leaning back against the fountain, her right arm hanging on the hilt of the sword at her hip, Nari closed her eyes, waiting for the others to show.

“They better not be late, otherwise…”

After an ambiguous amount of time had passed, the party had decided to meet up for yet another dabble in the lessons. If NIGHT had anything on her mind, it was certainly about how Koga had picked up Bacon from just a while ago. Would the man be bringing the tiny hog along? He knew this quest was about slaying pigs, didn't he? It pained her to even warn the man about his impulsive decision, after she'd noticed his taking home the Bacon. She just hoped whatever would happen to him wouldn't mimic what's happened to previous boar owners, too.

It didn't exactly surprise the player to see their companions armored. Rather, it was better that they were rather than otherwise, since they would be getting into combat. But seeing the tiny familiar by Nari's side, NIGHT almost thought to return home to fetch Nyanko, if he hadn't already been hogged by some other else.

Her eyes were fixated on the fox as she approached Nari, the woman already forgetting about manners. With a crouch, she extended a hand towards the familiar, and then stayed still and quiet, waiting for a response from the mischief.

Koga, thankfully, had enough common sense to not bring Bacon along for this one. He wasn't stupid enough to bring the small boar along to watch them slaughter scores of his brethren. Well, really only, what, ten? But maybe Cardinal had changed the requirements for this quest since the last time he'd done it.

So, it was just Koga and Okami this time, with the little boar at home, probably dosing on Koga's pillow, his preferred bed when it wasn't occupied by the player's head. It appeared that Nari and NIGHT had arrived ahead of him. Koga wondered for a moment if the two had come together. Unlikely, given how they'd acted around each other, but the man filed away the thought for some light teasing later, if the opportunity arose.

"Yo," he greeted them, garbed in his usual, a black coat, boots, jeans and a dark grey shirt beneath it all, his katana hanging off his hip. In sharp contrast with the now heavily armed Nari. "Looks like you got an upgrade, huh?" he said to the woman, giving her an approving look. "Bis not make it yet?"

The portal light enveloped Bismuth as he called out for the town of beginnings, his eyes tired from another all nighter, he had been setting up his shop on the third floor, and finding all of the ingredients that he would need in order to support himself as a business took a lot out of him, though he would never admit that to anyone. The familiar sight of the town of beginnings was a welcome one, this was the place that he had called home for a very long time, and parting with it was odd to Bismuth. Bismuth knew he was going to be the last one at their designated meeting place but did nothing to pick up his languid pace, the meeting spot wasn't far away, and he would be there soon enough

Turning around the corner Bismuth could see his three companions waiting for him, NIGHT seemingly far to busy playing with a fox, maybe a familiar? to notice Bismuth's approach, though Koga seemed to be asking about his whereabouts. Yawning Bismuth gestured to the group, his eccentrics seeming to have been dowsed by a bucket "Hey, sorry I'm late, had a rough morning." Bismuth offered no other response, as he too put most of his attention on the adorable fox that was now at there feet. His eyes tired behind a seemingly new pair of round golden glasses, and his hair pulled back behind his head in a loose ponytail, otherwise he looked like the exact same Bismuth that everyone knew and loved.

Once everyone had arrived, Nari unsettled herself from her resting place, giving a smile and bod towards Koga and Bismuth – the man seemed tired, but here, and Nari was surprisingly happy to see them both. Giving a quick chitter to recall Yuki, Nari strode towards the Blacksmith shop, calling back over her shoulder as she went.

“No worries, life can sometimes be rough on us. What matters is that you did make it. I’d be worried if you didn’t…” A quick, friendly smile thrown back towards Bismuth before she disappeared into the smithy. A man – similar in appearance to the alchemist, hammered away at the anvil. The rhythmic sounds reminded Nari of her own home, and a sudden ache for the workshop pained her chest.

“I’m busy.” The man spoke before Nari could even say anything, and she felt her lips turn downwards slightly in response.

“Busy or not, I’ve come because-“ The man cut her off again before she could even finish her sentence, and Nari felt her annoyance growing.

“I don’t do anything without payment. Go kill a couple of those pesky boarlets for me, and bring back their tusks. They’re pretty weak, so even you shouldn’t have any trouble.  Do that, then I’ll hear you out.” Nari felt her fists clench, and she fought to hold back the anger in her.

Heading outside she glanced at Bismuth and Koga, before saying aloud, “We get to go kill a bunch of boarlets. Oh, and he’s super friendly.”

"Oh, you'll make quick work of them. I'm sure."

If the player had the gall to say it, perhaps she might've. Instead, silence followed as NIGHT rose from her spot. All she acknowledged was the acceptance of the quest -- from one voice or another -- and shuffled off towards one of the closer entrances of town.

Was a "What're you waiting for?" also too much?

Her eyes faded over Nari's figure as she turned to the party. Simple, straightforward. Get one quest out before parting ways. There was probably a third one, but they didn't have to clear the lessons in succession.

"Hey," she said aloud, to no one in particular. "This way."

So NIGHT stepped off. Wasn't really sure if her party had been watching, nor following, nor... listening. And she wondered twice-fold if combat was really suited for the newbies. If she was just making another mistake, perpetrating it, even.

The sinking feeling in her pit was ignored.

Koga turned his head to look at Bismuth as he approached. The man...looked like he'd seen better days. But he'd made it as well. "Looks like you've been busy as well," Koga said, noting the man's increase in level. Good, they wouldn't have to worry about them getting assblasted by a couple baby boars. Progress.

Nari seemed to have wandered off a little, picking up the quest for them, while the other three stood by, silently. NIGHT and Koga were never talkers, but it seemed that Bismuth wasn't one either. Or at least, not in the mornings. Relatable. When Nari arrived though, the man gave the woman a small, amused smile. A reward for the obvious sarcasm she was exhibiting. Maybe she wasn't as...uncomfortable around them anymore. Or more specifically, NIGHT.

He began to follow NIGHT out of the safezone, a hand in his pocket while the other played with the orange tassel hanging from pommel of his katana, running it between his fingers. A habit that he'd unconsciously began to exhibit. "This shouldn't take too long," Koga finally commented, breaking the silence. "You two look like you could handle this without us babysitting you guys."

Bismuth looked over at Nari, who was now coming back from talking to the NPC for this quest, though she seemed a lot more confident in herself than last time. Boarlets didn't sound like much of a problem at all, especially since he had put on more than a few levels, but fights would never be Bismuth's cup of tea, and the light fear grasping at him was all the proof anyone would need. Looking over to Koga at his words on being busy Bismuth smiled, his warm smile having been replaced by a tired one. "Got my shop open. Bed's not the best, but I rarely use it anyways." It was like Bismuth had been muted, not seeming quite so bright as he had before.

Looking around Bismuth saw that NIGHT was already walking off towards the gates of the town without much of a word, just a simple hey. Following NIGHT Bismuth glanced back at Koga "I think you overestimate my abilities there Koga, I might be higher level, but I am in no way stronger." Chuckling a bit Bis continued there walk, things had gotten very different for the group very fast.

Nari fell in beside Bismuth as they walked towards the edge of town, smiling at the man slightly before her expression darkened. Raising her voice a little, so that anyone nearby could hear, she spoke words tinged with a slight amount of acrimony tied into them. “Don’t worry Bismuth, so long as we stick together, you and I can handle this. I won’t disappear on you suddenly.”

Her eyes seemed to bore into the gates ahead of them as she spoke, not blinking. Just as suddenly she turned her attention to Bismuth again, smiling slightly in what could only be described as a complete change in behaviour. “Did I hear correctly that you’ve got a shop open now? Where abouts? I need to drop by for a visit sometime, if for no other reason than to come compliment your entire stock and decorum.”

Bringing up her menu as she walked, Nari refitted herself in her armour, rolling her shoulders gently as the pieces sprang into place overtop of her dress. From her feet the little fox scampered up, taking its favoured place among her collarbone and snuggling in – before fixing its beady eyes upon Bismuth, as if trying to stare down the man.

Of course she'd noticed. And the taste of it was... sour.

She was wordless when she fell into step with Koga. Her tracksuit was zipped up tight, but what was more unusual for her time on the first were the gloves she kept on. Though, hardly noticeable, once her hands were stuffed full in her pockets.

NIGHT looked over to her friend, almost despondent. Searched for words to say, appraising a confession, before looking out towards the fields instead.

'Babysitting'.

The sound of steel cracking bone rang in her ear.

"Hey," the player started, once they were far enough into the fields that she was able to mutter to the man without keeping Nari in her sights. "So what're your plans for the day? ... If we're not 'babysitting', as you said... --"

"--Wouldn't that be no need for us to be present here?"

If NIGHT could bring herself to say it. But rather, she let the query hang quiet, choosing to wait for Koga's response instead.

Koga chuckled lightly at Bismuth's concerns about his strength. "Stronger or not, your HP pool is higher. Believe me, that does wonders." Koga didn't mention the fact he'd almost died to a Boar himself. Not his proudest moment, and not one he was going to share anytime soon. Still, an amusing story, so one day.

Although NIGHT and Koga were ahead of the others, he could still clearly hear what was being said behind them. As well as the way Nari's voice raised as she said her final sentence. Had something happened between her and NIGHT on their...whatever it was supposed to be. Koga cast a worried look over to NIGHT, but she said nothing. Not even when their eyes met for a brief moment.

But that look was enough to tell Koga something had happened.

The man reached over and gently squeezed her shoulder. She'd been there for him countless times. He'd be here for her. That was what he hoped that single action would convey.

When NIGHT did speak, it was in an unfamiliar voice. Smaller, almost. "I've got nothing," he answered, even toned. "Wanna eat at my place later? I'll cook something. More than rice, promise."

So far, the matchups seemed to be like they were for the first lesson, the two frontliners would talk amongst themselves while keeping a vague eye on the two newer players who were talking amongst themselves, almost as if they were two completely separate groups. Though something seemed off about Nari and NIGHT, last time they were completely flustered at the sight of each other, but now it seemed like not only were that not the case, but rather there was something, different there, an animosity perhaps. Bismuth just shook his head, it wasn't really his business, going back to paying attention to the woman beside him Nari, who seemed a lot more confident in herself.

Ignoring her first statement, which honestly seemed to be more of a jab at NIGHT than it was supposed to be comfort to him. Bismuth rubbed the back of his head with one hand, "I just have a small little Bistro on the third floor in the town of Flora, not much going on right now, haven't officially opened just yet, but I would be glad to cook for you some time." Bismuth's warm smile contrasted his tired eyes as he looked at Nari, she was sweet, and cooking her a nice meal would be fun, especially it would let him practice his skills on someone other than himself. "Though I really only know how to make Japanese dishes, which you would never guess by looking at Bistro." The inside was decorated to look like your classic medieval tavern, so the fact that it served so much rice and fish was an odd combo.

Nari smiled at Bismuth as he talked, she could feel the passion coming from him as he explained about his restaurant – a passion that she herself felt whenever she entered her forge. She knew it well, and respected the enthusiasm. “You’ve finally opened it, eh? I guess we’ll have to drop by and have something to eat! I bet it’s wonderful!”

Eyes suddenly glancing around, she’ll raise her voice, adding, “Oh, and – make sure to keep some extra utensils lying around for use. Just in case. Wouldn’t want someone to be without a backup option.”

Smiling at Bismuth again, she’ll draw her sword and head further afield, calling back as she goes. “Come on, let’s get this done with quickly so we can go visit your place, yeah?”

Finding a pack of four boarlets, she’ll swing her sword carefully, pulling her shield up in front of her as she stepped towards her target. Glancing at the four pitiful little creatures, Nari almost felt a pang of regret, knowing how easy this would be.

Hesitation. But not without thought. NIGHT had already planned to stay the rest of the week home, safe in her own room without the interference of anyone else, the way she'd always known she'd be comfortable, untouched. Still, she had to do something about food. And take out was an option, but... they were trying to make it not to be.

For the better, she reasoned.

A nod was all NIGHT would give the man, but that left the better question for their present -- left to their own devices, what else was there left for the veterans to do? They didn't stray too far from the duo; safety precautions, not knowing how much the difference in strength between the enemies and fresh faces were, numerically.

But -- "You two look like you could handle this". And "Oh, you'll make quick work of them. I'm sure".

Why did she force herself to watch the slaughter?

“Oh, and – make sure to keep some extra utensils lying around for use. Just in case. Wouldn’t want someone to be without a backup option.”

And what was all that about? Fidgeting hands, an uncomfortable shift. NIGHT pretended not to be bothered into a memory. She didn't want to lose her focus, not at the moment.

The conversation coming from behind faded into the background. Less out of disinterest, and moreso inattentiveness. It had even taken Koga several paces after NIGHT had stopped to realize she had turned to keep an eye on the other two as they apparently picked a fight with some boars, the targets of their quest today.

Evidently, this fight would not last long though, as a single swipe from Nari took out all but one of the tiny boars. Hmm, maybe this wouldn't be as painful to endure as Koga had thought it would be. With any luck, they'd be done in a few more minutes.

And then he could escape from whatever awkward hell that Nari and NIGHT had created.

More importantly, he could figure out how they'd created it. And how to banish it back into the void. Although Koga would not admit it, each time Nari raised her voice, clearly directing some two-sided, seemingly innocent remark towards NIGHT, he found himself becoming a little annoyed. It seemed petty. This was neither the time, nor the place, save it for after the quest. But then, he remembered, they were all probably a little more human than he was, in that respect.

Bismuth was glad that Nari was getting better at talkin, this felt a lot more natural then the last time they had, where she seemed way too bad at talking to people to actually hold a conversation this long. "It's fairly quaint just a small little tavern, but for now, it's home." Bismuth smiled, yawning again as they talked, raising a questioning eyebrow at Nari as she raised her voice to say to have extra utensils, almost as if she wanted there travelling companions to hear it.

Shaking his head Bismuth followed Nari, pulling his dagger out of the sheathe on his lower back. "That sounds like a plan." A small quiver in his voice at the idea of fighting anything actually head on, this would be his first actual fight in Aincrad, and he could feel the sweat making it harder to grip his curved blood red dagger.

Bismuth watched as Nari cut down three of the four boars she was engaging, and watched further as three more entered the fray. Nari had reached the end of her sword art, and Bismuth figured that this would be the only time that he could jump in in order to help at all. Gripping his blade harder, Bismuth ran forward past Nari in a blurry flash, spinning himself and in turn his dagger, so that it sliced through all four boars, and ended with him facing Nari, hearing the four consecutive explosions of dying monsters Bismuth smiled at Nari, sheathing his blade as the blue faded behind him, Bismuth couldn't see how he actually looked, and despite his tired appearance, he thought that that must of been pretty cool.

Nari smiled at Bismuth as he landed before her, a look of happiness on his face – obviously impressed with the feat he had just managed to pull off. Nari nodded towards the larger bull nearby that had begun to show signs of agitation at their merciless destruction of what may or may not be her younglings. Grinning a devilish grin towards Bismuth, Nari strode towards the larger boar, tossing the question back over her shoulder as she went.

“Feel like taking out Mommy Boar as well, Mr. Fantastic?” Her eyes landed on NIGHT and Koga in the distance, and she felt her enthusiasm flutter for a moment – a lace of anger rushing through her before she returned her focus to the larger boar now huffing in her direction. ‘Right. Down you go mommy.’

Picking up speed as she went along, Nari let out a slight growl before leaping into the air and attempting to roll above and over the large boar, her violet shining blade lashing out as she rolled over the boar’s body.

Idle, that's how she'd been. For what little time had progressed between their first lessons and their current, the beginners had already built up strength to wipe out tiny boars sent their way. It was no surprise, to NIGHT. The miniatures were built for execution.

The mother that protected them was new, though not unrealistic. It couldn't have been that much difficult for the fresh faces -- likewise, in her seemingly disinterested state, she did pick up on that glare shot her way, if only for a split second -- and she assumed it helped boost what berserker frenzy the warrior had been on. Uneasy, NIGHT tucked herself further into her tracksuit.

She watched as a violet flare turned what stood of the parent to ashes. A sour look. The woman glanced back at Koga before nodding towards the Town of Beginnings once more.

And for a lack of words to give, she stated plainly, in a hushed tone to her friend, "... They show promise."

Whether or not there was fear behind that observation was up to Koga to decipher.

They'd been swift to eliminate the quest targets. So much so that Koga wondered what the point of him and NIGHT being present even was. Yes, they'd planned to all go out again for this, but neither of the Frontliners would have been particularly dismayed at the fact that they had done it without them.

Still, at least it meant they could go back and wrap up quickly.

Koga looked over at NIGHT as she spoke, a small quiver hiding within her unusually quiet voice. Like the beat of a butterfly's wings on some distant continent, warning of a hurricane in the distant future, in a distant land. The man's gaze was inquisitive, questioning, as if he wasn't sure if he'd really heard that uneasy tone or not. In the end, he simply assumed it was his imagination.

"Yeah, they do," he agreed with a small nod as he looked back towards the other two. They'd all been like that before, hadn't they? And they'd all been forced to grow into something more. What trials and tribulations lay ahead of those two, Koga wondered.

Bismuth watched the flying strike from his friend, and was very impressed, it was a clearly hard maneuver, and it really showed the difference between the two of them, there was no way he would have ever been able to pull anything close to that off, Bismuth's response was cut short though, as he heard something coming from behind him. Bismuth didn't need his high perception to hear the charge of a large boar, they weren't the most intelligent or agile creatures in Aincrad, and that was even more so the case for the larger ones.

Bismuth froze for moments at what he heard, fear clenching at his heart, this wasn't a baby, there was no way he would be able to just one shot it like he had the boarlets. But he couldn't just stand there and take the hit, without looking Bismuth dove to the right at the last second, his crimson red blade a flash of light as he sliced it along the boar's throat causing it to fall to the ground, unable to complete its charge. Bismuth turned, and all he could notice were the tusks, deadly and pointed, shaking he looked over at Nari "I. . . I think I found papa." Bismuth's face was more white than normal, even though this was a simple fight, something that probably couldn't kill him, Bismuth couldn't shake the feeling of helplessness that enveloped him as he stood there watching the boar stand.
